SC Modding #3: Custom Cables

  • This is a detailed custom wiring guide. Custom wiring takes a system to another level. There is a lot of time and effort involved but it is definitely worth it. The best thing about custom wiring is creating cables which are the correct lengths so that you have no extra wiring mess to hide. I have covered many of the different aspects of custom wiring in previous videos but I have never done a full guide. In this guide I focus on custom wiring for an entire build, not just the wiring for the core components.
I start this video by covering the necessary tools and materials. I then move onto stripping, crimping, sleeving and installing connectors. Below I have included links to everything needed to do custom wiring.

Your video's perfect, and not to long at all. I have a short attention span, but I can still sit through your lengthy video's, because you explain everything we would need to know. You can't second guess custom wiring, for the health of your expensive components or the aesthetics. (The whole point of custom wiring) Good job. 10/10

I built my first PC just over a year ago and got the bug after only a couple of months!! thought umm what can I do next? watched so many many vids on upgrading to water cooling but have to say I'm never thought of going this far!! but I have to say this level of thought of the finer detail make me respect this level of custom builds. I've got s fare way to go!! great videos watching an expert with regards to water cooling and beyond which is why I started watching.

+SingularityComputers about the sata data cables, you should try the akasa proslim cables
these cabels have a two piece construction on the connectors, so they can be opened
and the best thing is that they work nearly the same way as 90° sata or hdd power connectors
you just cut the original cable to length and push it in ;) now you have custome length sata data :D

I was reading up and researching lately, and Lutroo usually takes crazy glue and puts a little dab of it on the actual wire when he puts on the sleeving. He presses it so it can stick, and then he pulls the wire to appropriate sleeving distance. He clips it and its now a PERFECT sleeved cable.

Easy way to get sleeving length is to crimp the connector on one end of each wire. Then put the sleeve on the wire from the non contact end. Then do you sleeve melt at the contact. Then pull the sleeve along the wire and cut to the same length as the wire. Then pull sleeve back from end of the wire, strip wire, crimp connector , then finish with sleeve melt and job done. Works every time with the sleeve then perfect length to give your wire a little room to be bent, ie not to stiff. Oh remember to heat seal the sleeve ends before threading onto to wire.

like for example what is best case for value, or the best to mod into.
or which are the best fittings etc etc.

would also fit your idea to make more reviews and vlog videos aside the build logs.

Great video. I will definitely rewatch this several times ones I get started. The only thing I missed in the video is, you explained obout the sata power connectors and the wire just pushes in the connectors. I am just wondering how you can do a clean sleeve on that. Don't think I can push it though the sleeving as well and expect a solid connection. Hope anyone has tips. Other thing I wanted to ask, would it be a good idea to solder it to after you scrimp the connector on? or is that overkill?

Am I missing something or misunderstanding why one would use these male pins?

Have you considered maybe doing some non-sleeved 14 or 12ga silicon cables for custom PSU cables? I think the "wet noodle" type of look would be very unique and possibly look awesome. The size is completely unnecessary for the current it carries, but the thickness would be similar to that of sleeved cables, just with a single smooth surface rather than a braided pattern. Just an idea I had, which I would try if I had more money and time :P Great video as always!

The nozzle needs to be further away and you need to do 4-5 more distant and thinner coats rather than a close and thick paint jobz

Hey bro! Really love your videos! I am about to start making my own custom cables for my personal rig but I'm confused on one thing: Is there a certain way each pin/cable is supposed to insert to a connector? or can I just connect them lets say pin 1 of connector 1 to pin 1 of connector 2?

Love the video, however you cover a lot of stuff that you already covered in #1? Video would be less than half the length if you kept to your intended video structure. But thanks for your time.

+Gonzalo Bueno If you're talking about the cable combs, pretty much any company that sells materials for custom sleeving has them. Performance PCs has them and for a pretty good price as well.

Oh forgot to mention I now always use a 6 + 2 pin connection at the GPU end as it is much easier to adjust if you swap out a GPU with a different connector layout.

Wire the 2pin connector direct to the PSU not from the 6pin connector.

Where can I buy the cable management box with all the goodies in?

+Mark Springthorpe :) Actually, nowhere. Daniel gives links to stores where buy parts. Boxes can buy separately. This is very useful, everything at hand and in one place.
