Great video, was having the same problem with a ps4 pro. 3 beeps, couldnt figure it out. Never seen it before also. Swapped the southbridge and profit! Thank you for pointing in this direction.
I'm surprised that just cleaning the underside of the SB revived the PS5? Sure it's not a bad idea but I wasn't aware that flux could cause those issues. Amazing repair as usual!
@@ToltecMerc Very much so. I love all the Repair guys on youtube. But your very methodical about how you go about what you're doing. Straight to the point and great editing.
I’ve worked on a few ps4’s that had a similar issue. They would work when cold and they wouldn’t work when warm. All these consoles had the same fault. It was always the south bridge. Electronic components contract when cold and expand when warm. I imagine, the chip moves closer to the board when cold, and moves away when warm. This would make sense why it works cold but does not work when warm.
This was a nail biting experience till you injected voltage, voltage injection is your friend when you have a short or a partial short I'm glad you got through. Good vid
so the wifi issue was caused by the SB?? Great job brother, hope thats all the problems she has!! I've got 2 units that randomly power themselves off ill have to try a new SB!! I kinda skipped through the video but it looks like the final fix was the SB is that right?? Thank you for your videos and very arduous hard work
As usual an very interesting and instructive video. Thanks a lot for all yours explanations. Just an question could you say what is temperature of your preheater and of your hot air station when you soldered southbridge? I ask you that because for first time I will try to replace an dead southbridge on a xbox one x and I looking some informations. Best regards, Nicolas
I started the pre-heater at 120C and slowly brought it up to 200C. I used a thermal probe attached to the PCB in a nearby hole to check the board temperature. I like to bring the PCB up to 100C-110C and then start heating the chip from above with my hot air set at 365C with maximum air flow. If you use plenty of flux, it should not take long for the chip to begin to wiggle. I use tweezers to lift if carefully without letting it slide and knocking off components.
Wow that was a real brain teaser, hard to believe that the southbridge could cause all those problems but well done for sticking with it. I have a PS4 that the date and time reset to 01.00 1/01/1970 every time you disconnect the power cable have you ever come across this problem before?
Assuming the battery is good, I have seen some PS4 that will not save the date and time until they are able to get on the internet and connect to Playstation servers. Of course you will have to allow it to update the firmware before it will connect to their servers. I think it is part of a software change after 9.00. They will refuse to save the date/time until you let it update and connect to their servers. It is probably quite deliberate on Sony's part.
Thanks for your help, I was holding off on updating the console because it had an older firmware version which sell for more. I have never had this problem until now with any of the consoles that i have repaired but you were right so thank you again.
@@on2wheels504 i understand but now that you know what the issue is, going forward sell it without updating because people who are buying low firmware models are going to hack it and they are probably not concerned with the clock so much. They can probably set the clock after the hack.
That was a rabbit hole. Have you thought about getting a cheap DualSense with stick drift? They’re usually functional enough without being fixed. Ive replaced some entire thumb stick modules before and that was a huge pain, so I have a few coming in and I’m going to attempt to replace the potentiometers only to see if it saves me some hassle.
I won an auction for a PS5 controller with stick drift and the guy just never shipped it. I ended up getting refunded. I need to pick up another some time.
A bad south bridge is an obvious constant on all of these models of ps5 models. So is it cheap parts or is there something in the architecture that is causing Southbridge's failure?
Hi i hope you dont mind me asking but does toltec merc mean somthing? its what made me first whatch your channel. ive done a web search but only found random info on the Toltecs ...... also any chance of a shop tour ? thanks for the great content
No one has ever asked before! The name came about in a strange way. At one time, I was very much into metal detectors and my first videos were on that subject. I was active on many metal detector forums (Geotech1.com) under the user name Merc which is short for Mercury dime which was a type of silver coin I enjoyed finding with my detectors. When it came time to post some videos to TH-cam, the name Merc was taken. Instead of thinking long and hard to create a great username, I looked over my computer at the detector hanging there. It was one of my favorites, a Tesoro Toltec 100. And so ToltecMerc was born. I have thought about changing the name but it is probably too late by now.
@@ToltecMerc thanks for the story. i thought it was the name of a galactic mercenary (in the style of Riddick) from an obscure sci-fi book or from a game since you repair a lot of ps4 ps5 consoles. if you ever do drop the name i would like to formally request DIBS (a british term) on it.
I am having random issues with one I am working on. It’s a newer rev. Board with a 90069GG SB. I can’t find any information about that. What is your take on swapping it out with a 61GG SB?
You mentioned BIOS is not bonded to individual PS5, but I do see dumps in the BIOS contains serial# and other stuffs. Have you done bios swap successful so far?
As far as I am aware, on the PS5 you just need to use a bios from the same type board. EDM-010, EDM-020.....and Blu-Ray or Digital version. I have not done a lot of testing of this.
I had one with no wifi that did not resolve with SB swap or wifi module swap. Is it just me; am I the only one that gets the weirdest failures? has anyone else had the same
@@ToltecMerc absolutely 100%. Even checked the lines going from wifi module to Southbridge. Tried three different wifi modules and two other southbridges as I was also in disbelief. 😁 I've got another one (actually two from the same household) with a different troll of an issue. Surge strike originating from modem to lan. Replaced SB on both and one also had severe surge damage on HDMI so replaced encoder and few other bits and bobs of encoder circuit and both returned to working. However, both of these units now experience shutdown with freeze and noise output through tv only when PS5 or online games are played. PS4 games play without error. thermal camera finally shows that ram is reaching temps of 105c which is probably the culprit. However the heat spread is quite evenly spread across all chips with a steady rise so I'm not sure if it's actually being caused by a separate issue since there is no apparent runaway event. As I said, I seem to attract the tricky ones. The freeze and shutdown with noise output (squelch) for PS5 only games is a known issue that occurs in the wild. No known fix, from what I have found online as most have gone through warranty to replace but a gddr6 issue does seem likely.

Sometimes flux and/or alcohol will stop the 32Khz oscillator from running. They are very high impedance and can't stand the extra capacitive loading.
