    This is delightful! I had no idea that this had finally opened, omg. A fun Broadway history fact for you: Broadway got its first female producer because the Titanic sank! Irene "Renee" Harris and her husband were co-owners of the Hudson Theater, and discovered Ethel Barrymore when they produced the play that shot her to stardom. The couple were first class passengers on the Titanic, but only Renee survived because she got on Collapsible Life Boat D, which was the final life boat to be rescued. When she returned to the Hudson, she took over her husband's role as the theater's producer, thus becoming Broadway's first female producer. And thankfully, the Hudson reopened a few years back and because of that, they're the oldest currently-operating Broadway theater!

    I love that there's an area dedicated to stage managers/the backstage areas! The backstage crew often gets overlooked, and so it's nice that they get a shout-out in the museum, especially since they play such an important role in bringing these shows to life.

    the zigfield costumes are so wonderful. my mom's not even that old, but she still has stories of going to see movies at radio city music hall as a little girl, with intermission performances by the rockettes. I've never really had a point of reference for what the costumes looked like, but they're really quite shocking! would not have expected the one shouldered top to appear potentially 90 years ago, but I guess it just goes to show that the previous generations were not the prudes we think they were. now that I know about this I think I'll try to go this week!

    • @jspihlman
      @jspihlman ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of Vaudevillian theater was considered low brow and risque, so not surprising that some of the costumes would match that.

    Such a cool museum - I went back in early December shortly after it opened and loved it! Looks like they changed the costumes around at the end so it must be a rotating showpiece to protect the costumes (when I went, they didn't have the ITW and Beetlejuice costumes but they did have a costume from Taboo, a dress worn by Christine Ebersole in Grey Gardens, and a dress Jennifer Hudson wore in the recent Color Purple revival - the last dress looks like it's been relegated to the back corner in your video)... it'll be exciting to go back and see new stuff added as time goes on! :D

    I went in February and can't recommend it enough. There are a lot of stairs because it's in NYC, so real estate has to be vertical. You go up and down about five stories worth so pace yourself. I like whenever places warn you of such things so you can decide if it's appropriate for elderly visitors or not. Take your time to appreciate everything.

    "Showboat" isn't anywhere close to being one of the first musicals. What we would today recognize as a musical started with a show called "The Black Crook" in 1866. By the end of the 19th Century, the musical was pretty much in the form that we are familiar with; however, it would take until the early 1940s for musicals to regularly fully integrate song, dance, and story into a cohesive whole. Up until then, musicals had either very light or almost non-existent plots that only served as a hanger for the musical numbers which had little or nothing to do with said plots. What can be said about 1927's "Showboat" is that it was one of the first attempts to marry the musicals numbers to the plot, which was also a lot stronger than audiences were used to. It was a milestone because it started creators of musicals on a new way of approaching the art form that saw its real blossoming with 1943's "Oklahoma!" Anyway, by the time "Showboat" premiered in 1927, the musical was a standard of theatrical entertainment. It had been around for about 61 years.

    • @Simplenotion
      @Simplenotion ปีที่แล้ว

      yup and that is why many call "Showboat" the first true musical - at least that's how it was taught in my "musical theatre history" course at uni. The shows before were considered to be "number" shows more or less. And yes, "The Black Crook" was also mentioned.

    I went on the museum and I did like it but I enjoyed the madam tissue museum more their broadway section. You could be inside the actual musicals. There was a phantom scene where you get on the boat with Christine and there is a chandelier you can drop. I felt it was more immersive. This movie was missing more interactive aspects of it. 😊

    • @kassinwonderland22
      @kassinwonderland22 ปีที่แล้ว

      Madame tussads not Madame tissue 😂😂 the wax muesuem is not about education and is purely for entertainment value so of course there's more interactive elements. It's also horribly expensive and a tourist trap. The muesuem of Broadway is more for theatre fans who appreciate the actual history and behind the scenes elements of theatre. Also not all muesuems are for everyone.

    If you are still in NY, the Broadway Passport is a creation of the Broadway Up Close folks who have a kiosk in Times Square. You might want to check them out. They have great tree ornaments, pins, and other Broadway merch. They also do walking tours. (Not affiliated, just a fan.)

    $47 adjusted for inflation would be $365 today so actually I think Chorus Line prices are in line with most shows today if we exclude scalpers who are selling tickets in the 4 digits.

    In the Hirschfeld room you can also design your own Hirschfeld drawing!

      You can! Very much possible to fill at least 4 hours in the museum, we spent 3!

      @@MickeyJoTheatre Easily! And the timed entry tickets make it possible to do that and still make the curtain of the show you're seeing on time!

    Wow, this looks amazing! I went to the musicals exhibit at the V&A last year which was really cool, my fave thing there was the costumes, I loved getting to see all the details up close. It was nowhere near as big as this though, I'd love it if we had something like this in the UK.
