Great podcast, thank you Dan. Loaded with great content. Having you provide the information that we can apply, creating a solid foundation for a new fly fisherman. The end result will only be as good as what we build off of. As for the rain? I did notice it in the beginning. But it took me back to my grandma’s house as a young boy. Great part of my life. But for the whole podcast, the rain was not a problem. If I, and we are concentrating on your instructions as we should be. No way the rain will be heard. Really appreciated all of your help and advice. Looking forward to seeing episode three. Thank you Sir. God bless. Jeff Stone
For me and what I try to teach is on the back cast, you can feel a slight little break and that is the line fully extended. once you learn to feel that little break it becomes muscle memory. The best way I have learned to teach that is to have them close their eyes, or blindfold them. When they stop trying to see whats going on they learn to FEEL the rod and the cast much quicker. Taught a buddy how to cast like this when we were in Iraq. Once he learned to feel that subtle little break his casting straitened out and he got so much better almost over night! Keep up the great videos Dan!!!
Hi Dan, My uncle taught me how to cast and it's identical to your cast. That was 53 years ago. 2 to 10 o'clock I can hear him repeat that several times. On May 11th I turn 60! I can't believe how fast time goes by. All the positional techniques sound just like my guitar teacher's tips for strumming and fingerpicking.
Dan, I watched your first fly casting video number one and I think it’s important, even in the beginning, to stress tracking and when I was watching you cast it looked to me like your tracking was off. Sometimes it is difficult to tell from a video connection with tracking unless you standing around in person or you have the video directly behind or directly in front of the student. Generally, I get behind the student so that they’re not bothered by throwing directly at me. No, I do not teach casting tracking the very first time a person puts his or her fly rod in her hand. Also, since I’m being such a wise guy, I find that beginning students are often confused as to the term “D loop“ and so I think it’s a good idea to explain just a little bit more as to what the D loop is. You threw great casting loops and your enthusiasm and clear voice are great. I plan to continue to watch your casting instruction because every time that I watch a good casting instructor, I learn. Thanks John for your thoughts and input, much appreciated! I have grown a ton myself over the years that I've been teaching (informally) ...it's amazing the bad habits even an instructor can pick up, I have definitely tightened up my casting game since posting on TH-cam :)
Honestly loved the rain behind ya - it wasn’t too loud that it took away from you talking! Felt it was a nice addition haha. Thank you so much for your videos - have been binge watching, and I’m so excited for this new series you’re doing n’stuff 😂 I’m a brand new fly fisher - so I can’t tell you how much I appreciate the effort you’re putting into all of the videos you make. SO EXCITED FOR MORE!!
I remember Lefty casting at the Sportsman’s shows. Holy shizz could he cast! This was a really great recording full of good info. I remember an old guy telling me the more time you spend false casting the less time you are fishing.. Thanks for taking the time to help others!
Thank you for the great comments and for taking the time to watch - I do appreciate it! Happy to help anyone looking to improve their fly fishing game - cheers!
Hey Dan! Guest what I did after waching your podcast ? Out in the feild and practice my cast. The season is about to begin here in Quebec and I got a trip comming up next mount, so got to get ready. Thank you for all the videos, must be a lot of work, but for new flyfisher like me, it help a lot. Fish on🎣
Hey Dan, Great podcast. The rain tinging off the roof was great! I am enjoying all your videos and tips. Been fishing for years and am now venturing into fly fishing. I am taking a beginners fly casting class next week followed by an instructional day of fishing the Shenandoah River next month. Keep up the videos!!! Thank you!!
Okay. So I’ve been watching this videos on casting and they’ve been helping tremendously. I’ve been using Shakespeare rods and spinner reels for probably 30 years. I decided I wanted to learn fly fishing maybe a month ago. I bought a cheap little Walmart fly combo to practice on and the first rod broke. Got a new one yesterday. Again, cheap, just to learn on. I’m at the point now where I think I want to start getting something I can actually fish with. In this video you said invest in good fly line and your cast will improve. Okay. Perfect place to start upgrading. But I don’t know what brands of fly line are good or what weight or really anything about it. I usually fish lakes but eventually I do rivers and streams when I get better. Do you have a video or recommendations on what fly line I should get?
@@kevinorton2552 A great all purpose fly line is the Cortland Finesse Trout II. You likely have a 5wt fly rod, so you’ll want to match the line weight with the rod weight. I have a discount code on my website at fishonrods.com

@@FlyFishDan Perfect! Thank you.
When do you release line
Once the rod completes the loading process, you release a bit of line
I WAS annoyed by the sound until I learned it was rain. Then it became ambience!
