  • We mentioned radial gradients for dog photography in the previous Full Edit video and since then I've seen hundreds of you apply the technique shown. Sometimes the application misses a couple of very important steps so in this video, I cover off vital application tips for the perfect light gradient using the moveable colour technique.
    I hope this helps to close the gaps that the previous video left open!

    Having decided to spread my range to include dog photography and not having a dog myself, your videos are invaluable. I found some other training. One was super poor. One was super cagey and wouldn't answer questions unless I bought the course. And the third is very good and motivated me until it became very expensive. So I'm very grateful for your videos. I'm learning so much. From dog training onwards. I've been in business for years so I'm not new to a lot of it but o don't tend to go in as much details for editing for example and am very interested in deepening both my knowledge and practice. All that to say thank you!

    You know every time I put the gradient tool especially the radio I love how you got this affect but mine takes up the whole page and it's obnoxious. I cannot find a way to turn it off so I can have more control over the effect. If it takes up the whole page especially with like say a yellow or an orange it just really ruins my image sometimes you just want a little bit of accentuating light. Definitely loved what you did here. I'm going to keep Googling and looking for videos on how to get more control

    Hey. I found your channel last week, I've been out five times this week practising single point focus. It's been a bit of a eureka moment for me, so thank you for taking the time to do these tutorials. 🙏
    Can I please ask for a quick bit of practical advice. As I'm working with pretty basic lenses (canon 50mm 1.8 and Canon 55-200 4.5) and editing on an app on my mobile (Snapseed) do you think i should prioritize better quality lenses or a PC with Lightroom and Photoshop in order to improve my images? Obviously I would like to do buy both eventually but I'm not sure which I would find more beneficial as my next purchase? I would be interested to hear your thoughts.
    Thank you again for doing what you do. It's greatly appreciated. 👍

    • @ThatPhotographySpot
      @ThatPhotographySpot  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is such a good question! Honestly, it really is up to you as I can't really advise on how you spend your own money. However, if it were me and I was in the same boat, you have a great lens there in the 50mm. Although pretty "basic", a nifty fifty can do so much, especially if you are using it on a cropped sensor camera. You didn't mention which camera you have, but if you have an APS-C Canon camera, I would personally choose a laptop/PC for editing if you are going to take your photography more seriously in the future. It will make more of a difference to your final images (after learning how to use the programs properly!) than a lens will right now 👌

      @@ThatPhotographySpot Thanks for such a quick response. I'm going to expose my ignorance here, but I'm not sure if my camera has the sort of capabilities you mentioned. I'm using a canon EOS 1300D. I know it's pretty much the entry level for DSLR so I'm guessing it probably doesn't have the sort of functions you were talking about. 🤔

    Hi Jess, I love your tutorials. Thank you for taking the time to make them. I have a question about the moveable color. I am stuck. I've followed all of your directions up until the point where you can get the color to move. It is stuck behind the dog and when I move it, I get a weird shadow outline of the dog moving around instead of the color. I'm wondering if you know what I'm doing wrong or if I've missed a step? I've tried making sure the gradient is selected and it's not working.
    Edit!! I found it. The gradient fill box has to be open for the color to move.

    My mask does not stay within the subject when I go to test it and move it around within the dog like you did. The mask is the cut out of the dog and it is moving all around the photo, it isn't staying within the dog. What am I doing wrong, I have rewatched like 10 times ha? Thanks!

    • @ThatPhotographySpot
      @ThatPhotographySpot  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like you're moving the layer and not the gradient! Double click on the gradient square in the layer and that should help.

  • @yuceggs
    @yuceggs 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Silly question, but how do I get the radial gradient to move within around like yours? I've rewatched the video a couple times but whenever I try to move the gradient, it shows the ghost cutout of the dog. help!

    • @ThatPhotographySpot
      @ThatPhotographySpot  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ok so you're either moving the whole layer or just the mask. You need to double click the actual gradient icon in the layer itself. So where there is a box with the gradient colour in, double click into that, you should have a gradient pop up window showing now and at this point, you can click and drag the radial around the screen. At 3:55 it should show this I hope in this video! :)

    • @ThatPhotographySpot
      @ThatPhotographySpot  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The mask won't make the gradient moveable, the gradient is moveable regardless, but the mask removes if from the dog. If the gradient is on the inside of the mask, you need to invert the mask 😊

    Ok so are there editing videos that are for beginners? The last 5 videos I’ve tried to follow along with you do like 5 clicks and say a million words and I’m lost. It’s all so fast. Not just your clicking but also the talking. I really want to learn this style of editing but I can’t follow along. I have PS and LR and I’m sitting here lot crying out of sheer frustration. I’ve watched 5 different videos which all recommended I watch other videos. In this one I can’t get 15 seconds in without already being confused how you went from image one to image 2, then there’s 3 or 4 clicks and I’m lost.

    • @ThatPhotographySpot
      @ThatPhotographySpot  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have just replied on another comment but I’ll pop it here too:
      Hi Amanda,
      At no point have I ever put that any of my full edits are for beginners, in fact, they’re usually professional level workflows. They’re created for the core community here who move at this speed and that’s totally ok if that’s not you, but you can slow the playback of the videos down using the little “cog” icon and yes, there are videos for beginners on the channel.
      For example, this series is a great one for learning the basics of different tools: th-cam.com/play/PLT6csbLNSHwE76a7I2hvmJCuh-tX--B5r.html
      Or this one for Photoshop basics: th-cam.com/video/-M0LLrJVbQU/w-d-xo.html
      Or this one for a starter workflows: th-cam.com/video/vViApmH-IOA/w-d-xo.html
      There is also a full course for Photoshop beginners over on our website which takes absolute newbies through to being able to follow the full edits on the channel.
      Hope these resources help but I know that I’m not everyone’s cup of tea so if not me then I hope you find your guide soon ☺️
