  • The Toddfather has gone on record to say Adam West's 1966 take on Batman is his favorite growing up. Could the tossed-in sweepstakes controversy be proving his nostalgic bias to be too laid thick?

I was born in the early 2000s and Adam West’s Batman was actually my introduction to the character which is why I appreciate his take.

Totally understand where you're coming from, and yeah, I think it's largely a generational thing. As someone who grew up in the 80s, the '66 series had a second heyday in TV syndication, so I watched it almost every day after school and on the old B&W portable TV at my grandma's ... which is why I'm glad they did a B&W version of this figure.

I was at my parents' black and white TV set when it premiered in 1966. It was a really big deal because the Superhero landscape on TV was almost zero. They were still playing the George Reeves Superman show. We knew it was campy and all that, but damn we had a Batman TV show with comic accurate suits, a batcave, and real Batman villains. I guess you had to be there, but like I said there was nothing on TV before Batman in the 1960's. It opened the flood gates. Green Hornet with Bruce Lee was another great show back then. It had a slightly darker tone. I always wished that Batman was done like that. Even at 13 years old I knew what it was. But we all loved the show. It was on 2 nights a week in the beginning. Tuesday and Thursday with a cliffhanger at the end of Tuesday nights show. I ordered 2 Adam West figures. Great videos here my friend. Like #48... Bat Toast

In 1989 we don’t have much. The Burton movie, the serials on VHS and AMC, and Adam West on the Family channel.

Adam West's Batman is the real Batman. By the 1960s, the character has shed the thuggish aspects of its origins (in which he used guns, and even killed people), and had progressed to being an actual hero. Adam West captured that perfectly, and set the standard for all time.
Then came the first Michael Keaton movie, and things went drastically backwards. The Batman character again descended into an ugly and brutal thuggishness, in which it has been mired ever since.
Batman should be unabashedly morally upstanding, not conflicted. He should be compassionate, not vengeful. Batman does not cynically believe that civilisation has failed; rather, he is an optimistic defender of civilisation.
McFarlane evidently understands the essence of the Batman character, and is rightfully promoting the best depiction that that character had ever had. Bravo.

@@base21 - Perhaps. But he continued killing people for some time.
He got progressively less angry through the 1950s; the TV depiction was culmination of the improvement that had been ongoing.

@@FerdinandCesarano He was mellowed out for censorship reasons. I like the campy show as much as the next person, but the 80s and 90s Batman and certain depictions are the only ones that matter. There's also the excellent Animated Series version and it's various incarnations. Batman was never supposed to be campy. That's just a time period quirk and during a horrible time in history from an entertainment POV (outside of music).

    • @FerdinandCesarano
      @FerdinandCesarano 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@FFFFPPPP - The salient features of Adam West's Batman were his earnestness and his compassion. That Batman believed that all criminals, even the most fiendish, could be rehabilitated; this is in direct contrast to the cynical and hopeless attitude of all versions that have come out since the movies.
When I was reading comics as a kid in the 1970, the television show had long been over. The Batman depicted in the various titles (Batman, Detective, Brave and the Bold, World's Finest, Justice League) carried forth from the series the most important aspects; the character was certainly not campy or funny, but neither was he vengeful and hateful.
The versions of the character in the various animated series are not quite as bad as the awful version spawned by the movies; but the difference really is marginal. All of them are ornery, being motivated fundamentally by anger; and all of them see society as a jungle.
That ugly "Dirty Harry"-style attitude may be a release for the worst element in the population; but it is not a fit characterisation for great hero such as Batman.
Adam West's characterisation is obviously the high point in the character's long history; but the later depictions in the comics retained plenty of the goodness that should rightfully have been considered a permanent feature of the character.
By contrast, the Batman that we have seen since the movies is a diminished and utterly degraded version, one that consciously spit in the eye of decades of the character's improving evolution, in order to appeal to the most obnoxiously backward values possible. An evolved symbol of hope was transformed back into a dreary symbol of despair; this represents a cultural tragedy of epic proportions.
P.S. - The mid-to-late 60s was a golden era not only for music, but also for television and movies.

Loved this suit in Arkham Origins. For someone that said Adam West is his definitive Batman, it's weird he would make the cape an inaccurate length. 15:33 Looks like the hand gesture on the back of the box.

I grew up with the Adam West show....I was a little kid then...and loved the show! However...I lost my enthusiasm for Batman over the years. In the mid-80's when I was in college, I collected comics and was into that era Batman, so I was primed for the MIchael Keaton version. '89 was my year! I loved how Batman finally grew up and moved on. Still, the old '66 show olds a deep hold on my mind, so I still invest in what I can in it. So, all that, I am very glad Todd has finally put some 66 effort with his main figure line. Good review and cool figure! I got my '66 Bats today!

19:20 I believe McFarlane still must include a free method to enter. When McDonald's did their Monopoly Sweepstakes, you'd get a Game Piece with the purchase of a food item. But McD also wrote in their fine print that one could be obtained by mail. Can''t find any other way to get a McF cowl entry code. 20:28 On the Official Terms and Conditions page, it goes 1 to 3 and is missing a 2nd part. I'm guessing the free entry method is written in that section and it will be added in near the end of the sweepstakes.
