  • Bowfin are a species of fish that nearly date back to prehistoric times. In the northeastern United States, certain bodies of water are home to Eyeball Bowfin (Amia ocellicauda) while down south and in portions of the midwest the Ruddy Bowfin (Amia calva) can be found. In this video I show a very simple rig that can be used to catch Bowfin in the Garden State. I also ended up hooking into a few bonus catfish as well! Be sure to check out the action in the video above!

Enjoyed the video. I was going to take my daughter to that spot last summer but didn't get it done. She hasn't caught either species of bowfin. Have to get out there this year. I will make a correction on the distribution. The eyetail is the species that ranges north of Maryland and out to the midwest and gulf states. The ruddy bowfin is distributed in the coastal states from VA to FL. That was a nice briwn bullhead.

Whoops. I made that statement without double checking my resources first. So I’ll have to correct that in the description. Thanks. Hopefully you get the chance to target them soon. I wouldn’t say this is the best spot for them, but it is very accessible and well maintained which is a huge plus for bank fishing.

@@TheVilleOutdoors It's one of the closest spots for bowfin near us. I have a couple of friends out in MO and AR that love catching bowfin on conventional and fly gear. I've was happy when they split the two species since I caught my first bowfin in FL and caught a few in TX. So I gained a species when they split the genus. I then caught a surprise ruddy in NC to get a photo.

@@johnaufderheide6117 Nice! I still need a Ruddy Bowfin. I’ll be in North Carolina from July 5th-12th particularly in Emerald Isle so I’ll be fishing saltwater mostly. The Croatan National Forest is nearby and has Ruddy Bowfin, but I don’t think I’ll be able to find the time to commit to catching one, but we’ll see.

Thank you! It’s a very accessible spot, hence why so many fish it. The creek has Largemouth Bass, Northern Snakehead and various catfish species as shown in the video. This was the best day I have had at this spot out of three attempts. Put in some time and you’ll get a Bowfin though! They sure put up a nice fight.

According to Google maps this spot is about an hour south of Peddler’s Village, Pa. That’s the only Peddlers Village I know of.

It can be tough for sure. Peak spawning is mid to late April in this area I believe. I could be wrong, but from my understanding that is when the largest quantity of fish are here. It was still a grind on this day as well. The first bowfin came an hour into fishing, but I didn’t get another til an hour and a half later.
