wow, i knew these fish are aggressive, but i had no idea how violent and efficient they are as suction feeders... also, the way it moves and stops its dorsal fin in a wavelike motion to move forward and backward, or hold itself in the water column without having to turn its body is so neat. i dont think ive ever seen a fish do that besides eels.
Bowfin are cool. I've gotten a couple on catfish rigs with cut bait. What awesome footage. I like how it just hangs around for a bit before it finds the crayfish.
Thanks man. I was going to make some ocean spear fishing videos but the water was way too cloudy last week. Next year I will for sure. We'll try to get some good steelhead footage from this fall's run.
Don't know where you caught this one but they grow to the size of my leg here in Florida and I'm 6'3". I know some of the old timers eat them but I never could get past the smell when cleaning them. Great fun to catch on a med/lightweight rig though!
These are one of my favorites, i almost sunk my boat one time catching dogfish! I was sight fishing them from the dock and caught like 3 before i realized that the plug wasnt in! Lol what a blast! FISH ON!
There are so many bowfin in the Mississippi River, areas that were once loaded with panfish are now almost completely void of them. We went out one night, lights on the boat, between them and gar, they will feast like piranhas.
Excellent job with setting up the camera and catching the choipique saying 'Cheese". Nosey bream are always the first guys on the scene. One question if you don't mind answering for me. Are they covered in slime? The ones we catch in Louisiana are covered in a heavy thick coat of slime.
Felt Bad for the Crayfish. He scared away the Bluegills and it looked good for awhile but he made a mistake in moving when the bowfin came within range. I THINK If he "froze" it would be possible that the bowfin would have moved on. Bowfin are a freshwater relative of the Cod.
idk what setup you were using looked like just a splitshot and hook from the video lol, but if you throw a sinker on then a barrel swivel and some of the normal eagle claw hooks onto the barrel swivel, you will be able to feel him bite that cray alot earlier, which really helps when using plastic bait to set the hook before he spits it out. great catch never caught a bowfin im big into catfish though
Why do so many bowfins have sores on their skin like that? i have caught many like that. is it some sort of bacterial infection or something? Also they are delicious to eat. Have sort of a tuna consistency but less fishy. 100% deep fry it.
Iian the ones from this spot get into fights/ feed in rocks/ get hooked a lot. I'm not sure about any other place. The ones I've caught in big Florida lakes seemed spotless, more or less.
He gives the camera a smile after eating the bait
Yes bro😂
He really does. Brilliant
Seeing all the different kinds of fish in the same area only seconds apart is super interesting
that bowfin said “you see what i did there? you like that?”
I target bowfin quite often but it's awesome to see their antics and curious behavior under water. Nice vid man!
Agreed! Thanks man!
how to u target them?
Target? Hopefully not killing them for no reason right?
I love how happy he is while eating.
pumpkinseed wishes it was big enough to eat the cray
Bowfin, bluegill, pumkinseed, white sucker and a few more, so many species!!!
Hey sierce panders
wow, i knew these fish are aggressive, but i had no idea how violent and efficient they are as suction feeders... also, the way it moves and stops its dorsal fin in a wavelike motion to move forward and backward, or hold itself in the water column without having to turn its body is so neat. i dont think ive ever seen a fish do that besides eels.
That bowfin has definitely seen a hook or two by the looks of the scars.
They do steal a good deal of bait in that hole
I didn't even notice that the crayfish was attached to a hook until after it was in the fish's mouth. Cool man
😭That was a Blessing to not only get so many different species but the bowfin getting a good angel for the camera 👏🏾
Angle*
I catch these fish a lot, have always wondered what their behavior is like, great vid man keep it up
Thank you.
real action starts around 2:10
Thanks
that was a sweet view of what goes on down on the bottom
thanks!

OMG BOWFIN IS SO HAPPY
Bowfin are cool. I've gotten a couple on catfish rigs with cut bait. What awesome footage. I like how it just hangs around for a bit before it finds the crayfish.
bowfin are vicious, every time i caught one they instantly hammered the bait as soon as I casted
Awesome vid!!! Such a variety of fish and what a monster a attack from that bowfin.
Thanks man. I was going to make some ocean spear fishing videos but the water was way too cloudy last week. Next year I will for sure. We'll try to get some good steelhead footage from this fall's run.
Lol he was ready for a close up
Don't know where you caught this one but they grow to the size of my leg here in Florida and I'm 6'3". I know some of the old timers eat them but I never could get past the smell when cleaning them. Great fun to catch on a med/lightweight rig though!
They hit blue worms the best. And you can always tell it’s a bowfin how they bite.
I didn’t even know these existed until a month ago
What great footage there, you got!! And the Final was like the Bowfin knew it was being filmed.
Great job.
Seeing that thing CHEW its food was amazing lol Crazy to see how they feed!
Are you looking to find some this year? (Apparently I watch too many fishing videos, since I see your comments around.)
2:33 Almost expected the bowfin to start vibing like the polkka cat.
2:28 "you got games on yo phone?"
That was sick!!! Bowfin are underrated.
Thanks ! they are.
2:29 :My grandpa trying to figure out how to video tape something.😂😂
Almost looks like that guy had been caught before there was some scarring on his lips
These are one of my favorites, i almost sunk my boat one time catching dogfish! I was sight fishing them from the dock and caught like 3 before i realized that the plug wasnt in! Lol what a blast! FISH ON!

is that a crawlfish i see on that moss?
Awesome vid man, worth the wait
Ur_My_Bitch thanks!
I used to catch these in East Texas creeks. Cool fish.
Bluegill : nope ain't falling for that again,
Bowfin : hold my beer
Pretty much!
That bowfin chomped that crawfish like nothing lol
crustaceans with built-in tackle? Awesome !!
Yeah. The combos are on sale!
I liked how the bowfin smiled at the camera.
This is an awesome video! Great job setting this up!
Thank you!
The bowfin is like what's that looking at the camera than bam it sees lunch lol
He looks so happy
now i know to wait a second before setting the hook because he had to chew on it! Awesome footage. thank you
any tips on catching crayfish
Bowfin = prehistoric monster.
These are one of the most aggressive hard fighting fish you will ever catch
This was the most suspense I've had watching one of these bait cam videos
Great filming
Awesome video. I've caught tons of Bowfin. Always wanted to see things from their end.
sartoaj me too. That's what I had to see for myself!
Awesome footage!!!! Just freaking cool!!!
the bowfin at 2:33 : 𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗹𝗼
Bowfin are my favorite fish to catch in freshwater
That must be the coolest underwater footage ever
Thank you!
Cruising by at 00:18.
The last one i caught had a green bullseye on it's tail.
I liked seeing the pumpkinseed sunfish.
Where was this taken?
Northwest PA.
did anyone else jump when the bowfin ate the the crawdad? XD
Not gonna lie bro, 2:42 scared the shit outta me.
Looks like that bowfin has been hooked before.
Perfect example as to why you have to give it a second before you set the hook.
Pumpkinseed was like "Oh look it's food" "Oh there's a camera there I'm gonna end up on youtube"
They are awesome ! Got my 1st in La. (grinnel) and a nice 6lber in NY in Black Lake.
Never fished Black Lake.
Awesome video! 🎣
Sure is alot of fish activity in this one spot wow!
Awesome
explains why they be hitting cut bait, almost like bottom feeders like catfish. yet they also attack lures like bass?
Depends on what forage is most available to them at the time and place.
Bowfin had swallowed the Crawfish with a hook in it too. But no fish line.
2:45 He looks so happy
Did you actually hook it? That was really cool to see.
Yes. It was a fun shoot
Great video
@2:31 "Who is youuuu?" 👀👀
But fr he scooted off quick asf after that lol
Didn't notice the hook at first lol
I caught one of these while muskie fishing, it was like "what the hell is that?!". It fought pretty hard.
Excellent job with setting up the camera and catching the choipique saying 'Cheese". Nosey bream are always the first guys on the scene.
One question if you don't mind answering for me. Are they covered in slime? The ones we catch in Louisiana are covered in a heavy thick coat of slime.
It depends on the water conditions. Some are coated heavy and some aren't. The slime also smells different from different bodies of water.
Good info. Thanks
Oh we're recording... Ok
Watching this i can see why you have to wait a bit to set the hook...it was in...then out..then back in
Felt Bad for the Crayfish. He scared away the Bluegills and it looked good for awhile but he made a mistake in moving when the bowfin came within range. I THINK If he "froze" it would be possible that the bowfin would have moved on. Bowfin are a freshwater relative of the Cod.
They are not, and it would have been eaten either way.
Dope vid
Awesome job filming bud!
Nathan Englander thanks!
Aw! Poor clawed fellow on the sacrificial alter. :(
Nice video, liked.
This is so frigging cool.
Cheers mate!

There are too many rocks in that spot for egg sinkers. I can lose a hook and shot or a hook, swivel, and egg sinker.
And the battle started
I like his goofy smile

If you cut the tail after catching the meat is less mushy
They love crawfish!
I looks like the bow fin is setting up the camera then eating the y Abby for a vid. XD
Cool footage!
Ty PigPatrol thanks!
DID YOU GET IT?
Hello? Hello, I seem to be stuck on a hook on a string, bad day really, uh, could somebody help me out here? Hello? Little help please...
Damm Mudfish we usually throw them up on the bank ... Feeding the Racoons
Guide in Florida called them mudfish when I was a kid fishing near orlando. That's where I learned water baloons are 1000X cheaper than big bobbers.
Set the hook!!!!🤣
Legend says he at the man recording too,
Great footage! Ferocious fish
Did u hook the fish
I was rooting for the bait... then I saw the hook, karma works again as design
Now, if only that crayfish had stayed still...
#420like excellent capture.
The fish had a huk in him
0:31 are you breathing through a snorkel?
yes sir.
2:29 What are you looking at?
Shadow Wolf LOL
2:32 ill will eat you!!
at 2:45 bowfin smile mmmmm crayfish aggasgh
2:30 boops!
