I too was once told to sell a pen. I gave them a ten-step plan to improving their business (the content of said plan was waffle) and then asked them to relay it back to me. They couldn't. They would have if they had a pen.
One thing that I realized over the past month from learning about copywriting and that I NEED to build up my confidence and get over thinking negatively. It holds me back so much

Yes, how’s it going?! Inquiring minds must know! It’s been 7 months. I just graduated with a Ba in English lit in December and got picked up by a copywriting agency in January (starting at a very low rate); barely minimum wage if you’re exceptionally quick. 4 months in, I managed to get picked up by another copywriting agency for a slightly higher rate and have had a few interviews for corporate copywriting positions that didn’t end up panning out. So with about 5 months of experience now, I am definitely making money but it’s hardly a living. However, I have a better grasp on what it’s going to take to get to the big bucks and it’s definitely possible but it won’t come easy. I hope this ia helpful to all the aspiring copywriters out there.
Here is what i wrote : (1)This pen is just incredible. It's unlike any other pen I've ever used. It's so smooth, and the ink just glides across the paper. Plus, it never smudges or bleeds through. It's like writing with a cloud! (2)This pen is just incredible. It's so incredible, in fact, that you'll be able to write all your problems away! With this pen, you'll be able to tell your boss off, write a love letter to your crush, and finally get that book published. The ink is top quality, and the pen itself is just so darn comfortable to hold. So go ahead and buy one now - you won't regret it! 👏🏼 Get one for yourself and thank me later 😉
Both of them are honestly trash, I don’t mean to sound rude but they really are. You need to sell the solution not the product. By the way you say it, it’s just a solution looking for a problem
i like how you use some sort of copywriting frameworks in the beginning. Including personal interest then "nontraditional" way and telling us that we are not who's gonna make lots of money and then offering us your 3 things( and this 3 things trick plays a lot too). appreciate it good job.
The greatest thing here is that this entire video not only provides useful information but does what he talks about the entire time by promoting and getting us to visit and take his own product.

No one buys everything, only those buy who needs it. In Sales we pitch an idea exactly like the way you mentioned. Sometimes An idea irrelevant to the product you're selling works very well too. I reached out to few things in sales that will work in every sales module 1. Find your dream audience 2. Do complete research on topic 3. Be problem solver 4. Give instant solutions 5. Thanks that is actually possibly the most helpful and honest take on copywriting, more importantly it really clearly articulates the skills and focus you need to have when copywriting really clearly, it's not easy but it can be rewarding if you put in the time and effort to do it right.
I backed out fast on copywriting after doing regular writing as soon as I realized how conversational and persuasive it was. I need to practice on both of those fronts!! Thanks for the suggestions
Sean, Thanks for this video. You always seem to have perfect timing because I have been really wanting to dig into Copywriting but questioning whether I have the skills. After watching your video, I know that I can do it. I just have to overcome my fears. By the way, I loved the cheesy example of selling the pen. It cracked me up because I have seen that so many times and that literally is how people try to sell it.
I like this video because you broke everything down, gave examples, good& bad,& then said how you can work your way up to copywriting if you don't at first have the skills.you didn't make no one feel bad.very, very good!
I clicked this video kinda terrified that it'd discouraged me form the trade... but it only encouraged me!! I think I possess all of these traits, and I think it's right up my alley!
It sounds like the enhanced wolfstreet version of "sell me this". I really appreciate all efforts and energy behind. You've made such a genuine performance. Thanks for being concerned.

Inspired by the "Sell the Pen" idea, I paused the video, opened a notepad on my iPhone and wrote: "I hope it has ink inside, if not I'm screwed." A man lay dying next to a piece of paper, carrier pigeon ready to go - help available just around the corner. Gasping, hemorrhaging, and fading away - he had seen that famous "light" one sees in life's final seconds and had already pushed it away twice, but his willpower (on fumes already, before) was now on empty. He rolled to the side, desperately hoping he had fallen onto a pen, and that it would be revealed like a timely angel from beneath his body, as he had already scoured his entire surroundings for a means with which to write his location and the word "HELP" yet had seen nothing of the sort. By the grace of God, whom he was dangerously close to meeting at this point, he saw a BIC 0.7mm pen raise slightly under the pressure of his hip, as if it were offering itself for use like the aforementioned angel, on important assignment and perfectly punctual. "I hope it has ink inside, if not I'm screwed," he thought, and in agonizing pain, reached for the pen. Having dispatched the carrier pigeon with a blood-stained and scribbled one-word "Hail-Mary" of a message, he slipped into unconsciousness, the pen remaining in his hand, resting there but no longer gripped by the hand of a conscious, living being. After the paramedics lifted him into the stretcher, the wheels caught a rock on the way to the ambulance. The sudden shake jolted the man alive once more. "Where's the pen?!" he immediately said, to everyone's surprise and immense confusion. Immediately upon returning to consciousness, his thought process seemed to continue right where it left off. He had come to understand that you should always have a pen. This was now far more than a pen, it was akin to a life raft, a flare, those things that in most moments, are commonplace, but in "certain" moments - mean everything. He now looked upon this BIC 0.7mm pen as one would a hero in war - that one person whose actions led to others lives continuing on. He yelled "Where's the pen?!" with the same energy of someone wanting to thank the one who saved their life - that being the most important thing on their mind after "being saved." You never know when a pen could become the one and only thing that could save your life. A pen is a hero. A hero you can carry in your pocket. --- The angle I went with on the fly, after I paused the video - was the implication of NOT having the pen as opposed to benefits of having it. An absolutely clear and understandable explanation of what copywriting takes. Loved your demonstrations of the wannabe copywriter versus the seasoned pro. I'm more encouraged than ever. Thank you.
I appreciate you making this video. I am definitely working on the skills to do copywriting, and I know I can do it. The one hangup that I seem to have is finding a way to show results when I lack any physical evidence of it. You game me a couple ideas so far, but I plan on communicating to you guys at LRA further. Thanks again, and nice video format!
Sounds good! A lot of the results really does come down to having the confidence you know you can do it. And after all, if you can convince someone to hire you in your pitch, then that in and of itself is proof you're able to be persuasive. Just have to have the confidence in yourself and your skills to know you can back that up.
Hey Sean, You also asked for comments on your new format. Mine is that this video was evidence that you're upping your game. Your storytelling has always been healthy. It's one of the reasons I watch you. But you're starting to tell those stories visually with this example. I liked seeing you open the door to real film techniques. I think it can set you apart from the crowds of wannabes in this space. The use of black and white with thoughtfully chosen filters was convincing - it created an illustration that aligned the audio message to the feeling of failure and demonstrated your point. You've over-the-top correction in the pen story was hilarious - especially for those of us who endured the thousands of painful hours trapped in over-priced courses that encouraged exaggerated solutions. I like this format and am keen to see how you grow it. Vlogging is overdue for the same attention to a good camera and editing techniques that copywriting needed when it moved from the paper letter to the web landing page. I hope you keep discovering the opportunities for the film in vlogging and find the right point of creativity in a process that is still on the cusp of a new horizon. Change this TH-cam world, man. David, man thank you SO much for this. This is the best comment I’ve received in a long time. I’ve felt like I’ve had the potential and skills to up things for awhile, but mostly due to a lack of planning, and a little bit of laziness I haven’t usually done that extra 20% to SHOW rather than just TELL. That’s the big thing I’m wanting to improve on - and I think it will go a long way. As you mentioned, in the space of freelancing specifically there aren’t many people who have tried to jump in and do higher quality work. I think thats where I want to go - I just need to get organized enough to make a plan for it and execute. May mean going down to 1 video a week instead of 2 for a little while. But I’ve been excited to start thinking about this more and to hopefully level up moving forward. Thanks again for taking the time to give such good feedback.
@@LocationRebel Thanks Sean. I absolutely agree. It's quality over quantity. And I'm excited to see you produce the work it takes to do this job. Just stumbled across this video and I must say 'confidence' is what it takes to start pitching! My first paid content writing journey begun when I assure the customer with a simple sentence, how about I provide you a 500 words of blog post that align with your business in floristry & you can evaluate, then decide whether I am the right fit to be your content writer? He said, okay! And now, 9 months later, I am still with his business as a freelancer & he recommended me to his other business associates. Back then, I have no expectations of the outcome but simply crafting words to resonate with his pain point & voila! Not an easy journey being a freelance copywriter but each research is well-worth to spend time on and execute the flow with each clients! Thank you for this video, love it!
Hey Sean! Your video was very helpful! Short but very straightforward with vital details on copywriting. I’ve watched tons of videos on TH-cam and by far your video is the one that helped me unstuck myself. Now, I know the right way to do better in getting a copywriting deal. Thanks a lot, it means the world to me. 👏👍
I basically know all of this, but I’m still learning other things that I need. Thanks for pointing out the most important points to become a copywriter sir.
I like the new format you are doing, good video transitions, and the music (can I ask where you got it from?). Very well done. Keep up the fantastic work and perfect examples.
I liked this video format, it's engaging and fun. Also love the reality checks. I'm in the CopyHour course right now (day 4) and it's definitely a lot of work. Also reading Influence, which is great. I've never been a sales person...but I kind of like it, lol.
Great content! Thanks for sharing. I really enjoyed how you didn't just say 'sell benefits' but you actually gave an example of a pitch that focuses on benefits. Thanks for that! I'll check out more of your content.
this style you've developed is really engaging :D I really loved this one (enjoyed your previous as well but this was very fun, engaging and educational!)
Man I love the content. I've been watching your videos and reading your articles for the entire day. I guess this was the kind of guidance I was looking for. Not only did I learn so much, I learned the things that matter the most. Very solid content.
Thank you Sean!!! As an aspiring freelance copywriter, working to build a strong foundation before I head into the great big world of copy, this video was essential. Your humor and obvious use of skill proving your points, really added sticking power to your knowledge. I will be returning to this video multiple times as a refresher of what I really need to succeed. Lastly, my favorite part of the whole video, talking to yourself... is this something everyone does as a freelance writer? HA!!! Love your stuff! *Subscribed* ~Charity
thanks alot, you just saved me alot of money. i was about to buy an online course. Not because of the first 2 reasons but for the 3rd. Im trying to start freelance copywriting from scratch and of course I have no results. I just came back from teaching business english in south korea for 6 years. better work on my small website and instagram first. keep up the good woik.
Maybe you need to be charging commission as well as flat rate... imo it's only fair you be compensated according to how well your work does. If your client makes an extra £100k from your piece, surely it's worth more than just the... £1k or whatever you charged them? Monthly commission! You deserve it and it's only fair!
This video is of so much value to current and upcoming copywriters. You articulated this effortlessly. It came in at the right time as I’m kicking off my copywriting journey this year. Thank you for the great informative video. I will check your link and have a good read as well.
I appreciate this video! I have been digging into getting into copywriting and this helped me move forward a little bit more. I love writing and I can sell ice to an Eskimo, so to speak, as I have a lot of sales experience as a hair stylist selling product while delivering fabulous service. And I am typically a positive/ optimistic person. Can you/ do you have a video on how to get started with copywriting?
The pen thing... A copywriter will start with asking questions to determine if the customer needs a pen in the first place. Through the question, he will know what type of customer he's dealing with, and what will push their buttons. Their desires and dream outcomes or the pain they want to be rid of. And then start doing what you said. I believe you skipped the most important part of the sales process. Don't you think?
I am learning about copywriting, i love writing in general but as someone who really have problems with commercials and the way they sell things or the annoying way to convince me to buy smth I don't want to, i have no idea why i want to try taking a step in this career but i want even tho the fear of sounding cheesy or cringy while trying to buy something or writing a header for example.. anyway this video was helpful and funny to see a tiny glance of how it works!
Such a great video! Do you have one that gives aspiring copywriters training tips or like strategies to become better? I just found your channel and love it! I started freelancing at this in March and it’s only October and I’m at the point where I literally am turning away work and considering getting an assistant but it took HOURS AND HOURS of research and practice. But my motivation was to quit my 9-5 so i guess if that’s your motivation and you hate your job enough you can succeed at this because that was mantra everyday! “Succeed if you want to quit”!😂
@@agaresgg definitely do it! I was doing it on the side with my 9-5 until I realized I almost matched my salary and left my job. The best way to learn I think would be to look up winning example portfolios, picking a niche and creating as you go. It’s really not hard though, after you have examples of work and your portfolio actually looks good, you’ll get clients and they will either provide a style guide for you or give you creative freedom. Just have fun with it and don’t make it hard. Even tho we have to work in this economy who says we gotta be stressed 24/7 doing it? So def write it on the whiteboard lol.🤣. you’ll be awesome though 🫶
here is what i wrote without knowing more english but with the help of chatgpt "Imagine the perfect tool to capture your thoughts, ideas, and dreams in the fluidity of ink. This pen isn't just any pen; it's a gateway to possibility. With its sleek design and smooth flow, every stroke becomes an extension of your creativity. Whether you're jotting down a fleeting moment of inspiration or crafting the next chapter of your success story, this pen is your steadfast companion. Its precision ensures every word dances on the page with elegance and clarity, leaving a lasting impression on anyone who encounters your masterpiece. Don't just own a pen; own a symbol of your potential. Embrace the power of creation, seize the moment, and make your mark with this exceptional instrument"
Great video, I had been thinking about copywriting, you sold me on the extensive work involved. Thank you for your honesty. This was my first video from you and I'm looking forward to more.
I almost got a radio advertising job. I didn’t get a pen test, I got a letter opener test… which I did pass with a “paper cut” bit I could do it, but it’d be a stretching experience
Just some thoughts that popped into my mind... Adopt the growth mindset to what Shaun is saying... (If you haven't heard of this concept, check out the book "Mindset" by Carol Dweck). Do I have the capabilities to learn what it takes to have these 3 SUPER IMPORTANT skills? Of course you do... we all do! While we might not be good enough right now (I'm certainly not. I'm taking a copywriting course and practicing the exercises as much as possible), we're a constant work in progress who'll get better with experience, learning and practice. I guess it comes down to how badly we wanna become freelance copywriters, being honest about our weaknesses, and learning what it takes to become better. We can all get there if we keep learning, keep taking action, and never give up! Thanks for the reality check Shaun! ✌✌
I had a totally different take on the pen. I saw it as "this is a tool to excavate your soul. to unearth all your fears, angers, resentments as well as channeling all your hopes, desires, loves and longing. this tool will provide you with an insight into why your life is falling and how to fix it' haha
I am so confident...my drops of confidence drip confidence! And hells yes I can sell anybody who's worth their salt in sales knows that you must appeal to a person's emotions in order to close the deal! Sales is one-hundred-percent about emotion and nothing! All that aside I don't have too many wins under my belt unless you consider losing a whole bunch of weight, like 30kg, since all this covid crap started
The video was so brilliant it persuaded me to think of writing .... as for some reason, I always write interestingly and persuasively ..people comment ..must try the exercises .. so good, thank you.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video. All it took was for you to show a different way, a more personal approach in why research is so important. I have been working on becoming a copywriter for 2 months (I know not that long) but I felt like I had everything figured out. I have really good templates (I get an average of 80% view rate) but it seemed like I was getting nowhere. My average reply rate was at like a 15%. From that small reply rate, not one prospect wanted to work with me. I see now why. I literally was doing exactly what you said not to do; make a template, insert name, and send. It makes so much more sense to focus on one specific field, research it and make your emails going out your prospects as you said "personal". Once again, thank you!
I had an interview for a marketing position a little while ago, got the old "sell me this pen" question. So I pulled out a check and wrote $1000 on it and told the interviewer to sign their name. Only catch was that this was after they handed me the pen.
I just wrote a pich using your tips... I'm really not "hopping for the best". I know that the client will read every word thinking on how I'm able to bring them to a higher land. =D And you know why? I DID researched about the company and wrote everything as personalized as it could be including the the name of the guy who is receiving the message. thank you... I mean it!
I too was once told to sell a pen. I gave them a ten-step plan to improving their business (the content of said plan was waffle) and then asked them to relay it back to me. They couldn't. They would have if they had a pen.
haha nice one!

Really appreciate *YOU* giving examples! That pitch letter was 🔥🔥
Never had a moment where I wanted a pen so bad. 🤣
Omg! This video is so criminally underrated! This was extreeeeemely helpful. Thanks a lottttt! Immediately subscribed
I basically know all of this, but I’m still learning other things that I need. Thanks for pointing out the most important points to become a copywriter sir.
I like the new format you are doing, good video transitions, and the music (can I ask where you got it from?). Very well done. Keep up the fantastic work and perfect examples.
Thank you! Looking forward to seeing where this goes.
I liked this video format, it's engaging and fun. Also love the reality checks. I'm in the CopyHour course right now (day 4) and it's definitely a lot of work. Also reading Influence, which is great. I've never been a sales person...but I kind of like it, lol.
Sandi that's awesome! Those are two of the very best things you can do to get better at it, so you;re on the right track!

Thank you for taking the time to explain what it takes to be a successful copywriter.
Great content! Thanks for sharing. I really enjoyed how you didn't just say 'sell benefits' but you actually gave an example of a pitch that focuses on benefits. Thanks for that! I'll check out more of your content.
Sean, we have watched this video a few times over. Fantastic content, personal examples and advice. Keep up the good work.
this style you've developed is really engaging :D I really loved this one (enjoyed your previous as well but this was very fun, engaging and educational!)
I wasn't sure about this video when I saw the thumbnail 😅, but after Im finished with the video,I'm pretty sure this video is a reality check ✅
Great content. Direct to the point especially for someone like me who's new to this writing thing. But it's a skill that can be learned.
The point is not to sell the pen. The point is to find out if and why they need a pen and help them realize it themselves.
Man I love the content. I've been watching your videos and reading your articles for the entire day. I guess this was the kind of guidance I was looking for. Not only did I learn so much, I learned the things that matter the most. Very solid content.
The 5% was the 95% in the old day
KEEP TRYIN'!!!
Appreciate the info Sean! Really good quality videos
Thank you!
these are things I learned in a few weeks that‘s no dealbreaker
That was clear, realistic with a peace of playful! Thanks my dear
The pen sales pitch was so good haha .
i love your view about new copywriters just like me, it helped me a lot.
This is the best copywriting lesson ever! Thank you!!
Mightier than the sword
Thanks for the extra points! It's really helpful.
Great stuff dude. I always appreciate people who provide examples when trying to educate us about something
Wow wow wow, the example of the pen really makes me realize a lot of things that I can't find in other videos. Thanks so much!!
its like car commercials
Exactly what I needed to hear!!!
I feel like I'm in an awkward space. I've gotten a few freelance copywriting gigs but I've never been privy to the results of my work.
Have you asked your previous clients how well your copy worked
Maybe you need to be charging commission as well as flat rate... imo it's only fair you be compensated according to how well your work does. If your client makes an extra £100k from your piece, surely it's worth more than just the... £1k or whatever you charged them? Monthly commission! You deserve it and it's only fair!
This video is of so much value to current and upcoming copywriters. You articulated this effortlessly. It came in at the right time as I’m kicking off my copywriting journey this year. Thank you for the great informative video. I will check your link and have a good read as well.
Wow! Thank you!! This is so encouraging
Thanks for the advice mate. Glad that I watched this video
Guys, I think I am a copywriter. This sounds so interesting and exciting.
What's the old saying??? Whether you believe you can or your can't, you're right.
@@mattgilstrap7295 agreed
@@msNooks-ig8zg awe thank you! I’ll check it out!
@@DK-td1lc You're welcome
I appreciate this video! I have been digging into getting into copywriting and this helped me move forward a little bit more. I love writing and I can sell ice to an Eskimo, so to speak, as I have a lot of sales experience as a hair stylist selling product while delivering fabulous service. And I am typically a positive/ optimistic person. Can you/ do you have a video on how to get started with copywriting?
I need to work on the confidence part. Great video.
Thanks Sir!!
You really did a nice job with the pen pitch... (Nigeria)
Wow great creativity; ripping that pen dialogue right out of the wolf of Wall Street
I need that pen! JK but yes this is a lot of help, great content! Keep it up. You got a new subscriber
I swear this video just gave me life. The intro was hilarious! I swear the power of the pen. Let's ✍
You better sell that pen. That was great!
Love your content and very straight forward.
Great video, to the point, explanatory, insightful and yet entertaining/motivating
Soooo... where can I buy one of those pens? 😂
You're just amazing!!!!
Thank you so much for this.
So. A niche is better !!! That’s what I picked up from #2. The rest I understood.
Thank you for making this video Sean! I needed to hear this.
This was an excellent video. Thank you.
😂 this was way funnier and coherently inspiring, I really envy you... how did you start though? Upwork? Fiverr please give me something, i need this
I'm going to write that on my whiteboard I just started taking a course 5 days ago and I have to do some research on freelance copywriting.
Awesome video very helpful thank you 😀👍
here is what i wrote without knowing more english but with the help of chatgpt "Imagine the perfect tool to capture your thoughts, ideas, and dreams in the fluidity of ink.
I didn’t get a pen test, I got a letter opener test… which I did pass with a “paper cut” bit
I could do it, but it’d be a stretching experience
Cool video. Read the title, clicked, read the description, paused, made this comment, left.
I get what you are saying. It is essentially sound. And I believe it will work. But there are a couple of problems with the "pitch" approach.
This is simply great and amazing way to teach newbie like me. Thank you.
This was fantastic. Subscribed.
Thank you for this Sean.
The title got me hooked so bad
This was so nice!!! The video felt like an interesting movie...learnt a lot as well
You hooked me at the pen. Subscribed you on spot. Well done 👍
You didn’t sell me the pen
I can do all of those things! Thanks!
I just wrote a pich using your tips... I'm really not "hopping for the best". I know that the client will read every word thinking on how I'm able to bring them to a higher land. =D
And you know why? I DID researched about the company and wrote everything as personalized as it could be including the the name of the guy who is receiving the message.
thank you... I mean it!
Damnnnn I want that pen 🖊 🤣 you killed that ish! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾❤️
I don't give you enough thumbs. Love the vids. If you need someone to back up a or tow trailer when you're in Bend, hit me up.
MORE THUMBS!! I'll take it. Love the thumbs up. And will let you know, my trailer skills to have a ways to go...clearly ha
You have great marketing skills !!!
