It was boring. When he finally decided to pull some stuff out of the Freddie King school of playing, that’s when he improved, but it was still boring and midrange.

... normally, this Track I can actually no longer hear because it has already been interpreted 10.000 times by all guitarists of this world more or less well - but Gary Clark Jr. - who I actually would not have associated with this piece at all - brings here a version that really goes down like delicate melting! And note also the super feelingful rhythm guitar of Eric Clapton - also a surprise, how he could find his way in here, his solo is also great! The special thing about this interpretation is, in my opinion, that no one has tried (or even is not able...🙂 to bring the wackiest arpeggios over the changes again, but just to go to the point with a lot of feeling and relaxed! This is wonderfully relaxed!
In the words of David Gilmore on trying to emulate JB. “Believe me, I’ve tried”. I listened for nearly 60 years to his genius. Saw him perform many times. Hard to believe he has been silenced. So sad.

I heard this song when it came out on Blow by Blow in '74 and saw JB and Jan Hammer on the tour. I loved this sound from the very first time I heard it. I wore out the album playing along with this tune. Learned some great licks and phrasing off that song alone. Jeff Beck, in my opinion, is the greatest guitar player the planet has ever seen.
