There's nothing wrong with making sweet, yummy drinks and having fun, but drinking mutiple per day and having the audacity to straight up just call it "water" is...insane
These drink mixes are sugar free, though? Why does everyone keep calling these "sugary" and "as bad as sugary soda"? They don't cause tooth decay either because, well, there's no sugar.
@@Name-du8kr I agree that it's weird that it's being called sugary when there is no sugar, but let's not pretend that just because they don't cause cavities that this is even remotely healthy.
@@Name-du8krthe flavor packets are usually sugar free, but these videos also show them adding syrup (which is often not sugar free - some of them say they're sugar free but in my experience sugar free syrups are clearly labeled, and it didn't seem like most of the ones in the videos we saw were ) as well as actual sugar. And not all of these packets are sugar free.
If you hate plain water, just try to add natural things like lemon or berries. Adding sugar or flavored powder to the water isn’t making water, it’s called making beverage.
@@kai_maceration by all means I’m not an expert either but I do believe the sugar in fruit juice is a bit better than the sugar in pop or whatever they put in that water syrup. Or maybe not in amount but in qualities of the sugar itself or just because of the lack of dyes in fruit juice or at least there shouldn’t be any then the dyes in coke or that syrup thing. Research is always important or at least I try to anyways.
You can make fruit flavored water instead of this water packet mix. It’s healthier and i notice that a lot of people that grew up low income “hate water “ and can’t drink plain water. I blame their bad gut biome for this.
Formerly I drank a whole bottle of cola every single day for like four years until I finally realised that I need to lose weight - so I stopped drinking soda immediately. It was good for my body but it took me a few weeks to get used to the taste of plain water. So I kinda feel their struggle but drinking their own created soda doesn't make a change at all.. It's the same sht - they now lie to themselves and say "it's healthy because it's water"
I think you are missing the point, those people don't drink when they are thirsty, they must drink more that the average person because they had a surgery. As someone that drinks one litre with every meal i can say i like water but when i had to drink that much water the morning i had to an exam i felt like vomiting. It is different when you are forced to do it from when it comes naturally
@@Fungigi Not sure why we are scapegoating low income folks. Basically anyone who grew up drinking sodas, juice, and other sugary drinks and not much water will have that struggle.
i can never understand people who hate plain water. i love plain water. nothing else feels refreshing when i’m thirsty, sugary drinks just make me feel even more thirsty
I think the water they have access to is just not good or feeding on sugar permanently altered their taste buds. If you've ever had to avoid sugar for a good while and make your own meals from scratch, when you taste "outside" food again you notice how strong they are. Sugar is a scary drug.
Its an electrolyte imbalance. I have the same issue as them drinking tap water makes me nauseous and feel even more thirsty than before. Its due to potassium, sodium and/or magnesium imbalance.
I used to hate plain water as a kid, but I didn't like to drink those sodas aswell.. by the time I got older I got more into sports and my favorite hobby is dancing now. So with that, I tried to drink more plain water everyday until I got used to it and now I like plain water :) sometimes, when it's 'boring' for me, I make infused water to get a bit of a flavor, not too much tho because i hate too much flavor, and I feel good again
If "plain water makes you nauseous" that can just be a sign that you're drinking water when your body wants you to eat food. Food is typically healthier than sugary water, so try eating a snack and drinking plain water with it. Sincerely, someone who got kidney stones at age 22! Please make sure you get your recommended dose of water, and continue drinking your fun flavored drinks in moderation!
Or maybe their stomachs are actually sensitive to the temperature and not the water itself. Try drinking warm water (apparently this is a thing. I thought it was weird too but I do that now when my IBS acts up because I'm sensitive to tea and it's been great)
did you get kidney stones just from not drinking enough water or was there another reason as well? sorry you had to learn the hard way though, that really sucks
@@wafawaffles that's what they think was most likely, since I was often dehydrated in high school (my meds reduced my sense of thirst and I drank more gatorade/soda/coffee than water) and we ruled out the other common causes. Not fun, and you can't undo it (I still have some in my kidney that haven't started passing), but you CAN prevent more forming in the future, by drinking lots of water without added sugars/salts/minerals.
There's a certain threshold where you can still call it "flavoured water" (a splash of juice, crushed mint, etc.), but these recipes have gone well beyond that; it's like calling a marinara sauce "tomato juice".
Agreed. Even just a little of anything added in usually adds a qualifier to the "water" part of its name. A splash of lemon makes lemon water, for instance. Some sliced cucumbers left to soak in a pitcher overnight turns that water into "cucumber water." But, even then, it's mostly considered water. If you really get fancy, water with sliced fruits or herbs in it could be considered "infused water." It's essentially cold-brewed tisanes (fancy word for herbal tea). OOH. Realization! When you start adding other "cooking" steps, then it becomes not-water! That's why all these people are confused. They think they are just adding one thing similar to adding lemon to water, but they aren't! Syrups HAVE to be cooked down to exist. Tea needs boiling water and steeping and a similar process happens with coffee. Adding a pump or two of a syrup though... On the surface, it doesn't feel like making a drink. Truth is, that cooking step was removed for them but still exists somewhere in the process. I dunno. Just an idea for fleshing this definition out a bit, I suppose.
As a diabetic, I can safely say that a single cup of any of those "waters" would put me into a diabetic coma. Just by watching this my pancreas is screaming in terror
I am not diabetic, but my gods the DYES. I would get so sick so fast. I had a similar thing with just lemonade to change the colour as a kid--before I knew I was so sensitive to dyes--and within 3 weeks I was super sick and went to the doctors about twice over it in the span of 6 weeks. Looking at the levels of Red 40 and Blue 2 dyes in these drinks alone makes me wanna faint.
If she’s worried about the drink staining her clothes because it’s so incredibly pigmented, then maybe she should also worry about the fact that she’s ingesting it
I feel like this would be way better if they were making infused water. Instead of pumping their water full of syrup, they could put fresh fruit or vegetables like cucumber, or herbs like mint. Some of them even have some health benefits like lemon water. There are so many recipes for infused water too. It actually stays water as you're not pouring in dyes and tons of sugar. Sure, the flavor is a lot less strong, but it's way more healthy for you and is actually helps to improve your hydration.
I hate lemon and anything sour, but lemon water tastes so good. Much better than sugary water. Even bubble tea tastes disgusting with 100% sugar (sorry if I offended anyone). Drinking sugary water all day is basically the same as drinking bubble tea all day. Not healthy.
@@larsthedude1984 My fiance showed me that video when we started dating, probably as a gauge to decide if I was worthy or not, based on if I liked it. I'm joking, about that last part, mostly lmfao
i used to find water boring when I was like 13/14 and I remember this helped me so much! it's a great and healthy tip and you can freeze the fruit so it cools your water instead of ice
What worries me is that they're putting 3-4 pumps of each flavor of syrup into their cups. When I put, for example, vanilla syrup into my coffee (because I've bought those bottles too), I usually only used half a pump, maybe even one if I wanted it strong. It terrifies me that these people put SO MUCH syrup into their drinks.
yeah same I sometimes put a teaspoon of hazelnut syrup into my coffee to make it a bit less bitter but I if I put more I would get sick of it after half a cup. don't wanna guess how many teaspoons are in 7 pumps of syrup
Remember if water is making you feel weird, you probably are lacking in minerals such as sodium, potassium etc. Add a little bit of lime juice and salt to your water and you'll feel refreshed.
Completely agree! As someone with POTS, I can say that some people can't get hydrated from water alone. They need electrolytes in the water such as tiny amount of salt and sugar (I'm talking REALLY small amount of sugar) for the body to absorb it. Also, check your local water chemical levels. Some people are very sensitive to chlorine and fluoride which is often added to tap water to clean it or for "benefits". If your area has a lot of chlorine or is really hard, get filtered water jugs that you refill. I physically can't drink tap water in our city without feeling sick and nauseated, but it's because of the amount of chlorine they put in. Once I switched to filtered water from those big 5-gallon jugs and a water dispenser, water has been far more enjoyable for me. It's always nice and cold, and if I want hot water, it's on tap, too.
Yes! I have the same issue tap water makes me nauseous and let my mouth dry, so i switched to bottled water with high potassium and magnesium and its better!
I think it‘s because tea has a long history and and actual word for it but this is a passing trend so no one is bothering to call it anything other then sugar water.

Also what the hell does birthday cake taste like? Like what kind of cake is it? A birthday cake is not one specific kind of cake. Does it taste like chocolate, cheesecake or apple pie

the least companies could do is make those packets out of paper or something. like the pasta powder mixes you get. least then its biodegradable...hopefully
I feel bad for them because they genuinely think it’s water just flavored but baby, that’s JUICE. That’s what JUICE IS. water but with added flavors, additives, syrups, and sugar. They’re literally just making juice bruh.
Not quite. Juice has to have a certain percentage of fruit/vegetables in it to be called juice. Lemonade for example can’t be called juice as there isn’t enough fruit in it.

The phrase "birthday cake water" sent shivers down my spine.
same deal. in fact i'm pretty sure adding as much flavouring as these tiktokkers do would make my sensory issues even worse. it would be way too sweet and the texture from the syrup wouldn't be fun to deal with
if you don't like it to be sweet, you could also put a teabag of some fruit flavoring into water, I often use like 1-2 bags per liter. it's just enough to hide the weird flavour my tap water at home has. some brands also now make tea with stevia leaves in them if you want it to be a bit more sweet, but I'm not a big fan of the aftertaste of artificial sweeteners
I personally like throwing frozen raspberries in my water bottle! You can probably do the same with any frozen fruit that you enjoy, and frozen is generally cheaper than fresh. Just don't use the fruit to fully replace the ice

They're doing everything in their power to avoid just drinking tea. Seriously, I have a birthday cake flavoured tea I bought like a year ago that I still haven't finished because it's so incredibly sweet that I can't have it too often (and it really does taste exactly like birthday cake). It's a loose leaf made up of dates and a few different kinds of leaves. Only natural sugars. I cannot fathom how you can go THIS full circle about drinking "healthy" flavoured water and completely ignore the existence of tea. You can have it hot or cold, and it's infinitely less expensive to make than buying a million syrup pumps. Tea actually has health benefits too, it's caffeinated but doesn't dehydrate you like coffee, and it may even help PREVENT cavities by reducing bacteria and acid in your mouth. Tea comes in so many varieties and flavours, and unless you've tried every type of tea in existence, "I don't like tea" is simply not an excuse. People who think they don't like tea have probably just tried black tea and assumed all flavoured teas still have a black tea-like flavour. Try blueberry tea once and get back to me, it's sweeter than any soda I've ever had.
That's so true, ppl could just put all kinds of fruit like dried apples, lemon/lime juice, or literally any edible herb, even cucumbers in their water for taste. Or honey if it has to be sweet. But tossing in like a quarter of a sugar package + artificial colours and flavours?? Tf

It wasn't actually a recipe at all me and her just threw in the grossest combinations we could think of. It was oatmeal, copious amounts of hot sauce and cayenne pepper, olives, tuna, and anything else we could find in the cabinet. To be fair it's not my fault my other cousins were stupid cause they fell for it and ate it like 12 times.
I did it with liquids in the fridge as a kid. Usually milk, and the syrup that maraschino cherries come in. It was quite good. At least, to a small child who loved sugar above all else. My sister made hers with milk and pickle juice... can't say I ever wished to try it.
It’s so weird when people say that they can’t drink plain water. It’s basically like saying „I can’t stand clean air, it’s just too crisp for me, let me infuse my every breath with a mix of my favorite perfumes forever.“
Honestly, the water bottle brand my parents buy is so nasty. The taste is fine, but for some reason, my mouth feels so dry and starchy after drinking it. I like the arctic polar brand (not the seltzer, just plain water). Like, I can just chug half the bottle when it’s nice and cold. Edit: I tried Evian and it was gross. Idk why, but it had a weird texture. It felt like I was drinking someone’s backwash 🤢
Before I was diagnosed with diabetes, I was CHUGGING water like there was no tomorrow because of the excessive thirst. Imagine if I did that but with these flavored "waters"? I'd have been dead before they had the chance to diagnose me lol

TW// ed A little while ago, I actually used to drink flavored water (not as outrageous tho, more like a little squeeze of a lemonade flavor water enhancer) and to call it “water” encourages a… weird mindset. Firstly, I adore plain water, and I drink like a gallon a day, and so my mom got me a water enhancer because it contained sodium in it. Drinking too much plain water, can cause your sodium levels to drop and it can harm you very much, so my mom thought it would prevent me from dying lmao. (That’s why drinks like Gatorade or liquid IVs have sodium, to replenish your body of the sodium it lost from for example running) Later on, I developed an ed and I missed juices, sodas, smoothies, and basically any drink that wasn’t water or unsweetened tea. So I would continue using my enhancers pretty frequently so I’d drink more water to prevent me from drinking a simple orange juice, because I did not want to drink my calories. So, it’s true, these aren’t THAT harmful from an objective point of view… but many of these syrups and what not, have a very high sodium content, and it’s not like they are drinking just PLAIN WATER to counteract it… because these drinks ARE their water. So, on top of the sugar level some of these have, they’re drinking copious amounts of sodium in one sitting! Moreover, if one is struggling with an ed like I was, and resorts to these types of things, it might make them more inclined to drink these mixes in very large amounts to suppress their hunger…. So although not that harmful, the side effects from it CAN affect these people and their viewers…

I have actually heard that for some people who've had bariatric surgery, plain water can upset their stomach. I don't understand the science behind it, but there are doctors who reccomend sugar free flavor packets to patients who are getting nauseous from plain water. @@thatvalensteingirl Sorry, I should emphasize the "unsweetened" part. I think that when people get used to consuming sweet things all their lives, it can be difficult to get used to an alternative, hence why the default drinks in north America (from my experience) are typically sweet, even if it's "sugar-free". I'm not qualified to say whether or not artificial sweeteners are good for your health, that's besides the point. But I do think that that sweet things have an addictive nature especially when they're they ONLY choice in some places. And that means that it's ripe for overconsumption and exploitation.

The only time I’ve had water make me feel sick was when my salt intake was too low. Literally sprinkling some salt on my tongue then washing that down fixed it, my headache was gone too. My friend experienced the same thing
People don’t realize that “hydrating” is more about the salt content of your body than it is the actual water that’s present! Too much salt or too little salt are both equally bad scenarios that should be avoided - you can actually drink yourself to death with water!! It’s called hyponatremia
If you do not like the flavor or water: may I recommend fruit teas. Most are decaf, and they add a flavor that isn't too strong but are somewhat sweeter and smell really good without any added milk or sugar. There are a lot of options on the market if you go looking. You can prep a lot of it at a time, let it steep for a long time for more flavor (try experimenting with starting with boiling water or room temp, there is a difference). But if you get into more traditional teas (i.e. Chinese teas) which are known to have many benefits, make sure you eat something with them if there is nothing in the tea, cause they can and will make your stomach upset.
It's better to try several different kinds of plain water. They all taste different. Some taste disgusting to me. Others are downright delicious. I wouldn't recommend anyone quench their thirst for 2 l per day on tea. That's just too much! Especially if you choose herbal teas.
Also if it's a hot day, just pour the tea over some ice or throw some icecubes into your mug. I've been putting icecubes in my peppermint teas for as long as I've been drinking them lol

In the UK they introduced a sugar tax to reduce the amount of sugar we consume, reducing obesity (in theory) but of course that just means that all the companies sell more of their diet/sugar free sweetener versions of drinks rather than actually reducing sugar in their products, taste gross I hate it so bad
I think artificial sweeteners are an okay way to wean yourself off high sugar drinks. If you quit cold turkey then you might experience more cravings. But in the end they should be a "rare" consumption, not just a substitution without trying to change the underlying habits.
If you are drinking a lot of soda and want to up your water intake, sparkling mineral water is a great transition! I also recommend sparkling mineral water for folks who get nauseous from regular water.
That’s a great tip. It’s what I had to do. I’m a juice drinker. I like soda but juice is what I’ll grab first and I realized I was drinking up to 1800 calories in just juice in 2 days…so I started drinking sparkling water and ice water and it cut my juice/soda intake drastically. I actually crave regular water now. Juice/soda tastes even better cause I don’t drink it all the time
I myself hate the taste of sparkling water, but a good transition if you dont want a hard transition from soda to 'flavourless' water (I myself love water but some people think it tastes like nothing) is adding syrup to it, but not a lot. I dont know if its a dutch thing though, we have many flavours and theyre actually made for children so they at least drink something. You can provide your own measurements so it isnt sickly sweet and at least for the syrups that we have here, with the intended use it is at least half as sweet as coke for example so its a great step down if you cant go to water instantly!
I'd recommend tea. Either premade large tea for summer cold tea or make your own then store in the fridge. If the person is struggling with sugar addiction they could try maybe 4 tablespoons per 8+ cups of tea and slowly lessen it until its 0 sugar.
I used to not drink water ever! I would start to barf every time. I taped off soda slowly, used bubbly and la croix (the cans help) realized I liked those. Then slowly started drinking plain water, now I’m up to about a gallon of plain water a day, only. I get a Diet Coke sometimes, but it’s a craving not a need. La Croix after you’ve gone off sugary soda is delicious. 😅
this video started off with me thinking 'thats normal though???' because I'm Irish and cordial/squash is really popular here and this seems to be the same thing. but the watertok folks are going above and beyond with the amount going into such a tiny glass. like the addiction to the taste of sugar is so worrying.
Yeah I don't drink squash but everyone I know does and the concentration in most brands nowadays means people only use a tiny amount, like less than one pump of a coffee syrup. I also work in a coffee shop and can testify that more than two or three pumps of those syrups makes literally any drink taste like sugar sludge, so just the thought of drinking one of these "waters" makes me feel super gross 😭
The lady why started the trend should’ve talked to her doctor more about the feeling of “throat erupting” from drinking 64floz of water. Either she was chugging all her water at once (and 6-8oz feels bad when you do that) or her stomach can’t hold 64oz. It just seems weird to go from “my stomach is too full” too “artificial flavors helps me stomach all this water”
9:53 This is what happens when you are highly desensitized to sugar due to chronic overconsumption. You _need_ these huge quantities just to be able to taste something. After a period of staying away from sugar, the sensitivity resets itself. Trying those drinks then feels like death. Also, she says it is "refreshing". Ironically, she is drinking just about the _last_ drink that could be considered "refreshing". All that sugar will not help to refresh you, and instead will make you feel thirsty.
I've been cutting down heavily on sugar, yesterday someone gave me a reese's cup and somehow it tasted sweeter than I felt even straight sugar would taste.
This ain’t water this is juice lmaoo also when I wake up in the middle of the night thirsty af I want plain water 😂😂😂😂 flavors hitting my mouth at 2am is crazy.
My heart starts to race as I watch clips of people happily pump loads of syrup into their water. If I wanted birthday cake flavored anything, I'd go out and get myself a birthday cake. Or ice cream.
I was gonna say. If I wanted something sweet that tasted like birthday cake. I'd just buy birthday cake ice cream. Like... that birthday cake water probably has an equal amount sugar to ice cream but taste worst...
these ppl usually had gastric bypass surgery though, so the point is that they can't actually be eating all that much food and need to be drinking a lot of water, even if it's highly adulterated with flavored syrups.
So I also had weight-loss surgery and drinking water in the beginning was SO difficult for me. My stomach was reduced to the size of an egg and I was on a liquid diet. I ended up passing out and going to the hospital for fluids because I was dehydrated and my blood pressure dropped. Now I'm three years out and can eat healthy size portions and drink about 100+ oz water a day no problem. But plain water has always been difficult to drink even before surgery. I literally would gag trying to drink plain water. Anywho, I rely on a little bit of mio, crystal light, or zip fizz (vitamin flavoring that's a little fizzy) to flavor my water. I tend to dilute it quite a bit. For example, one packet of crystal light suggests you add it to a 16 oz bottle and I'll add it to a 20+ oz water bottle. That little bit of flavor helps me quite a bit. I can't imagine adding zero free syrup too, sounds way to sweet. Anywho, I lost 135 LBS (from a size 24/26 to a size 10) and kept it off. Drinking water is critical and according to my urologist, adding the bit of flavoring is OK.
I’ve heard this from others who had weight loss surgeries too. They all seemed to struggle with drinking enough water after and would have to force themselves to drink it and still end up dehydrated.
@@katiekat2074 in my case, I think it was, 1. I drank more pop than water before my weight-loss and surgery and I didn't hydrate enough at that. 2. After surgery I was forbidden from carbonated beverages and was told I had to drink minimum 40 oz water which was hard to do with my new stomach. All in all, it was a sudden change that took time to adjust to. Now I have no problem with it but I do still have to flavor my water a little. Right now I'm working on a 24 oz water bottle with two modest squeezes of sugar free crystal light. I can do infused water too. I just have to have something in the water. The only time I can drink plain water is if I'm working out and very thirsty. Anywho, I don't know why I've always been like that.
When I hear people say "regular water makes me nauseous" all I hear is "I'm too used to drinking flavored water and I don't feel like undoing that bad habit."
A can of Pepsi has 41g of sugar, so these ladies are essentially living like 14 year old gamers who just discovered Mountain dew was their favorite drink in the world 😂
I used to be OBSESSED with those water packets, it was the only thing that helped me leave soda and juice alone. Unfortunately, I started developing some serious headaches and I became dehydrated… needless to say I went back to lemon and natural fruit in my water instead. This is not water, these women are making sugar free sonic drinks 😂
I will never understand how some people can dislike water. It's literally what keeps us alive. There is no drink I like more than ice cold water out of an insulated tumbler (like a hydroflask). It's just simply delicious and so satisfying.
I’m on the opposite side of the coin, I don’t get how people like it. Like, it’s refreshing on a hot day or when I’m thirsty, but it doesn’t taste like anything to me, so I’d rather have anything else that was flavored
@@Them_kids_momma Some of the syrups they use are sugar free, so they're likely made with zero-calorie sugar replacers. The packets have more sugar in them I think than the syrups.
Background in organic chemistry here, just wanna say that there's this thing called 'sweetening power'. Normal sugar has a power set at around 1, while artificial sweeteners are sweeter... way sweeter. I've checked the ingredients of the syrup they used (Skinny syrups), the two main artificial sweeteners they use is sucralose and acesulfame-K. Respectively, the have a sweetening power of 600 and 200, which means they are 600 and 200 times sweeter than normal sugar. With the amount they put and consume, it's safe to say they are, in fact, sugar addicts.
thank you for making a video on this- watertok has been mystifying to me. i’m excited to see what people outside that community say. the aspartame and dyes cannot be good for you.
It's probably better for you than being obese and if it helps these people lose weight it's probably good but it's still a bit weird hahah like surely water isnt that unappetizing
same, it's fascinating lol. to think that there are so many people in the world without clean drinking water, meanwhile we have people adding this absolutely vile tasting stuff in the pure spring water that we are so lucky to have here
@@highestqualitypigiron Yeah, I don’t add straight up regular syrup in my water, but I add little bits of those flavor water pods with electrolytes to my water. It helps me wean off soda and juice and I feel more hydrated (idk, I probably have anemia or something. My lips are always pale and dry regardless of how much water I drink).
as someone with pots, a lot of these packets have high sodium content (which is why i use them, but usually i go for a liquid iv because they are less sweet) but for the average person without pots consuming this much sodium will have the opposite effect and actually dehydrate you
I didn't realize until recently that some people don't... Drink water? I had a friend come over and when I offered some, they told me they don't drink water. 😭😭 WHAT?
Watching them drink all that flavored water made me legit just thirsty for pure, untouched water. Thanks #watertok! Definitely accomplished the job of making me drink more water.
Plain room temperature water makes me sick, but I can drink a litre of cold water no problem. This video made me reach a bottle of water from the fridge lol. I'd drink juice or lemon water if I wanted flavoured water
Wow. Same I just cant tolerate room temperature water for some reason Wonder why. I have to let water from the tap to flow for some time until it gets cold enough and I can drink it.
I love cold water, but whenever I drink anything with ice, my mom always tells me to drink hot water because “it helps with circulation and digestion”. 😭 I’m sorry, but I refuse to drink hot water unless it’s hot leaf juice.
@@CapucineNighly could be. We don't like drinking our water at home due to it being well water and can taste like blood or metal. We do have many filters which helps very much.
@@CaseyAvalon oof, can't relate, I lowkey love metallic tasting stuff lol. like when I was a kid I used to put coins in my mouth, or I would literally drink my own blood whenever I got a cut. I used to love drinking the tap water over at my grandma's house because she also had a well, so the water would taste like metal.
Dr. Mike has mentioned this. If your habit is drinking a bunch of soda, I can see how this will be healthier since you can control your sugar intake better. But I also think it's a little crazy to say I had weight loss surgery but I'm losing weight cause of there sugar bombed drinks. 😂 just because two things are happening at the same time doesn't mean they're related
ikr i was littterally thinking the same. like she's losing hundreds of piunds from gastric bypass not the water! the water is probably helping some but its not the cause.
Is it really? Perhaps it's harmless to others in the narrow sense, but the future medical complications it might cause is completely preventable and self-imposed, yet it can potentially divert government funds for healthcare subsidy from those suffering from medical issues that aren't as preventable or caused by no fault of their own.
In the UK we have something called squash. It's concentrated liquid fruit flavouring to add to water. It's super common to be offered tea coffee or squash if you don't want a hot drink as a guest. Using packets and syrups like it's so exciting seems kinda odd as we all add fruit flavour to our water over here
I have a migraine disorder and I'm discovering that sugar has a direct effect. I have also discovered that artificial sugars are even worse. Just watching this makes my head hurt. 😧
The thing is though, you can argue artificial sweetners/ingredients are not great, but these are not sugary syrups. They're sugar free. Additionally, artificial sweetners have a bad wrap from like 1 old AF study that's not really relevant since it referenced giving mice inordinate amounts of artificial sweeteners no person would ever consume in a lifetime.
i had a terrible reaction to aspartame in a crystal lite water flavor-er, so it's actually something to be wary of, my entire forehead broke out into an unbearable itchy rash covered in blemishes for like a week
If people are looking for better zero sugar sugar subs, that's literally the worst option. I would go with monkfruit than something that would literally give me cancer(it literally does). And I had to remind my future cousin-in-law that she should avoid giving that to her diabetic mom and linked her to shops that sell natural safe sugar subs.
@@CapucineNighlyThis is false. Over a hundred agencies in multiple countries have concluded based on studies that aspartame is not directly linked with cancer. The original study was done on rats and multiple, subsequent studies have shown different results. Please do not fearmonger in the comments when the science is there. I suggest you look into it yourself.
That sounds awful :( Aspartame gives me a headache. This one time, my friend gave me a big crystal lite slurpee and I drank it because I didn't want to waste something my friend gave to me and that was the worst aspartame headache I'd ever had.
This is basically homemade squash, which is familiar to Brits. You buy a huge bottle of “squash” which is a highly concentrated version of the end product that you dilute with water to make a drink. A British childhood is full of orange squash and Ribena. Sugar free versions are also available. I’m glad I grew up drinking mostly water so never had the ridiculous feeling I “can’t drink plain water”.
My grandma once told me to drink water with sugar to prevent muscle soreness after exercising so i tried it and i HATED it. It tasted like a really sweet medicine (and of course it didn't work) so watching this video reminds me of that flavour and makes me wanna drink a lot of plain water so... Thanks for keeping me hydrated
I tried this a while ago. Drinking water made me feel sick (found out later that my body was craving more electrolytes and didn't want them diluted), so I tried those Mio water flavorings. I dramatically increased my water intake, but the artificial sweeteners gave me all sorts of health issues. Now I drink gatorade until I get thirsty and then drink water for the rest of the day. Also my body likes room temperature tap water and not refrigerated filtered water. Who knew? 🤷
I know this will probably get buried, but: as an actual dentist, I just got *chills* from watching these people lmao. In two years they'll need dentures. I cannot stress enough how bad this is for your teeth. Whenever you eat/drink anything with sugar or starch, the bacteria in your mouth will transform those carbohydrates into energy for their cell functions, which generates waste: acid. The acid degrades the enamel of your teeth, causing cavities. While brushing your teeth frequently and correctly to destroy bacterial colonies is very effective to prevent tooth decay, so is consuming food and beverages in intervals of no less than 3 hours: your saliva is a natural buffer solution, working on neutralizing the acids bacteria produce to get back to the slightly alkaline pH of your mouth. The more frequently you eat sugar, the harder it is for your saliva to get back to that alkaline pH, slowly destroying more and more your teeth. Drinking one of these drinks a day? Fine. Drinking these like you would with actual water (8-10 times a day)? Cavities speedrun.
@@sarahd.4782 Aspartame, although acidic, would not be a problem in itself just like other artificial sweeteners wouldn't: they aren't actually carbohydrates and bacteria will not consume them. However, the acid MAY contribute to noncarious lesions (like erosion) that can cause sensibility of the tooth; a quick Google search tells me that many of these flavoring packets also include lactic acid, further decreasing the pH. Like I said, consuming one or two of these drinks a day is fine, just like drinking lime juice (an acid drink), but consuming it 8-10 times a day like you would with water is not going to be good. Regarding alcohol, if you mean alcoholic drinks, yes, these may cause cavities. Alcoholic beverages like beer are made by fermenting the sugars of fruits or grains into alcohol, so the less alcohol it has, the more sugar the drink has; beer has a lower % of ethanol than vodka, and because of that reason it has more sugar than vodka. Ethanol in itself does not cause cavities, though. I would advise against it or at least consuming alcohol with moderation because it is a co-carcinogen, meaning that it increases the risk of oral cancer, especially if you smoke tobacco. I would also advise against mouthwashes with alcohol: besides being a co-carcinogen, it weakens the enamel of your teeth and does not distinguish between good and bad bacteria (throwing off the balance of your oral microbiota), while also causing irritation of the oral mucosa.

Hearing people say plain water makes them feel ill or that they hate the taste is always interesting to me because mostly all I've drank since I went to college is water, decaffeinated green tea, and unsweetened black tea (if I get fast food or eat at a restaurant). I have juice or a soda maybe two or three times a year, if my go-to drinks aren't available. Makes me wonder if it has to do in part with the water quality depending on location because most of the water I drink comes from the well on our farm.
@@ivyrose7751 Yes, that's why I said in part. Clearly surgery has a major impact on a body's functions post-surgery, but I'm wondering if water quality has any impact since not everyone who gets these surgeries feels sick drinking plain water.
It's also definitely to do with taste buds and their sensitivity, plus stomach acidity, plus mineral levels in general. If someone says plain water makes them nauseous, I'd recommend having a small snack or adding a pinch of salt to their water, whereas if someone says they don't like the taste of water, I'd recommend either drinking it ice cold or steaming hot. I've been pretty lucky in terms of water quality my whole life, and grew up with only unsweetened teas, water and the occasional juice, but that has not changed the fact that room temperature water is unpalatable for me. I wish it weren't so, but alas, I got to choose neither my sensitivity to taste nor my organ quality.
Two years ago my family and I switched from soda and energy drinks to sparkling water, then after a year of that we switched to those zero sugar juice packets you can get at the store. We drink those for special occasions or when we just want a treat. There’s also tea, I drink a lot of tea nowadays. I used to pile in the milk and sugar but I’ve managed to lessen the amount over time there too and now enjoy plain tea all the time!
3:09 it wasn't the water sweetheart. You probably drank too much. For people that had weight loss surgery its common for them to feel like sht if they fill up too fast.
This is CRAZY. At work I carry around a 64oz water bottle. I fill it probably 55-60oz and fill the rest with orange juice for a splash of citrus, not cause I can't drink water, I just prefer it and I think this is that idea taken to the logical insane end game
my grandma would make the same kind of stuff with stevia or crystal light flavored sugar water "juice". I always thought it was super nasty and I can't stand the taste of fake sugar. if you're wanting healthy flavored water, put fruit in it! like cucumbers or strawberries
Heck, there's many different types of mint that you can use to make healthy flavored water too. Orange mint smells great pair it with some fruit and it tastes even better. There's no reason to use this syrupy garbage.
I just assumed that all of the flavorings were sugar-free, but now looking at some of these, I don't think they all are. I put mio in my water, and that's how I drink water. It's sugar and calorie free but I only put a couple drops. The artificial coloring scares me. These people are drinking more syrup than water lol
I assumed the same thing, I know the Sunkist packets they used are sugar free cause I keep them in my house when I want something flavored, and I know those skinny syrups were sugar free. I’m assuming these are supposed to be for like hard core sugary soda/juice addicts to take the edge off with the sugar free sugar syrups and zero sugar drink packets. That being said just the thought of all the dyes the people using these packets making multiples of these a day is sending me! Also, the thought of drinking cake flavored water is bananas to me, what is the point?!?!? Lol
The guy with the black sweater is most definitely making fun of the sugar water people. I love it! She doesn't seem to realize that she's encouraging people to do this and saying it's just as healthy as water. That's a problem! Especially if kids are watching.

I blame their bad gut biome for this.
Formerly I drank a whole bottle of cola every single day for like four years until I finally realised that I need to lose weight - so I stopped drinking soda immediately. @Iseebichan
It's not weird. You get hydrated faster with warm or room temperature water.
did you get kidney stones just from not drinking enough water or was there another reason as well? sorry you had to learn the hard way though, that really sucks

I know! Even half a pump can be too much for me, and these people are using half the bottle
Exactly! I'd probably even be okay with them calling it "water" if it was for a single pump of a syrup
yeah same I sometimes put a teaspoon of hazelnut syrup into my coffee to make it a bit less bitter but I if I put more I would get sick of it after half a cup. don't wanna guess how many teaspoons are in 7 pumps of syrup
I work as a barista and never use the bottles recommended serving size for sweetening my drinks. Now as for the masses, I load that shid up
Yeah and they mix them LIKE HOW DOES IT NOT TASTE GROSS
Remember if water is making you feel weird, you probably are lacking in minerals such as sodium, potassium etc. Add a little bit of lime juice and salt to your water and you'll feel refreshed.
Mix it about saline solution, two cups water, 3tsp sugar, 1/2tsp salt! Better at hydrating than regular water
Shot of pickle juice does the trick too!
I drink a crazy amount of water and this method actually quenches my thirst lol
It’s funny how these are considered water but tea (literally hot water with some brewed leaves) is considered a separate drink
I think it‘s because tea has a long history and and actual word for it but this is a passing trend so no one is bothering to call it anything other then sugar water.
@@windowsill9724There is a name for it instead of just "sugar water", which is "cordial" though some know it as "squash". Orange squash is perhaps the most well known version in the US.
@@13gan That‘s very interesting. I never knew that. I looked them up and I think I never heard them being used like that because it is a british definition.
@@windowsill9724 I other former colonies it's quite a common thing. Just do a search Google and apparently in the US cordial have a different meaning since it's a type of liqueur, schnapps. For some reason, it didn't arrive in North America because it seems even Canada doesn't have it but you could find it in the Carribbean. What is common in US and Canada though is all the -ade like lemonade, fruit punch and drink mix like Chrystal Light and Kool-aid which would fall into cordial territory. Funny how it became trendy when it's already an old thing even in the US.
Because tea is specifically tea leaves or other botanicals like dried fruit etc infused in hot water to release the aromatics. (even if you then drink it cold it's still tea.) This isn't tea, it's water with flavoured syrup added.

Also what the hell does birthday cake taste like? Like what kind of cake is it? A birthday cake is not one specific kind of cake. Does it taste like chocolate, cheesecake or apple pie
@@chgr4674If I’m trying to make a guess, the poster picture for a classic Birthday Cake these days, seemed to be the Confetti Cake. The Vanilla Cake with the white buttercream, and rainbow sprinkles within it.
Which is still bogus, because while I can see ‘dessert’ flavored drinks in frappes, teas and lattes because they all have milk product in them. Ain’t no way any of this is going to work with water.
@@Tenshii_Artii interesting. Thank you. Here in Germany you usually get your favourite cake as your birthday cake. Most in my family always want and get cheesecake (our family’s own recipe which like most German cheesecakes tastes very different from New York style cheesecake. Our recipe has a little vanilla in there and it’s amazing). My best friend always gets an apple pie from her mom. Another friend made her boyfriend tiramisu as a “birthday cake” 🙈😂
I can’t imagine that everyone in the US likes the same kind, so I guess there must be some variety.
@@chgr4674 No problem! And yeah, I totally get what you are saying!
I’m not from the US either. But from what I’m seeing in stuff like Protein Bars, Donuts, ice creams and other sweets and desserts being made, Birthday Cake flavor is usually that Vanilla cake with the sprinkles. So that’s why I assumed it might be that.
But yeah, The way we treat birthday cakes over here is kind of like how you do! I don’t usually like a Chocolate cake or Vanilla cake often, so my family would sometimes get a coffee cake for me in the past. Or ice cream cake, since for some reason I really don’t like icing at all. And would even settle with just a no-icing cake if I could.
But because of my partially Indonesian Culture, sometimes i get layered cakes called ‘Kue Lapis’ for my birthday. Or a literal cheesecake, where it’s a vanilla sponge, cream cheese icing and shaved cheese on top.

Lemonade for example can’t be called juice as there isn’t enough fruit in it.

same deal. in fact i'm pretty sure adding as much flavouring as these tiktokkers do would make my sensory issues even worse. it would be way too sweet and the texture from the syrup wouldn't be fun to deal with
if you don't like it to be sweet, you could also put a teabag of some fruit flavoring into water, I often use like 1-2 bags per liter. it's just enough to hide the weird flavour my tap water at home has. some brands also now make tea with stevia leaves in them if you want it to be a bit more sweet, but I'm not a big fan of the aftertaste of artificial sweeteners
@monsterchenjule2326 that's an interesting idea. I never thought about that before. Thanks for the idea :)

The problem with “they had surgery, leave them alone” as a response is water related nausea generally only occurs for weeks post op and watertok is full of people who are years out. If it makes people feel better to cut artificial or all dyes out, then that's all good people are allowed to do what they want. A little while ago, I actually used to drink flavored water (not as outrageous tho, more like a little squeeze of a lemonade flavor water enhancer) and to call it “water” encourages a… weird mindset. Firstly, I adore plain water, and I drink like a gallon a day, and so my mom got me a water enhancer because it contained sodium in it. Drinking too much plain water, can cause your sodium levels to drop and it can harm you very much, so my mom thought it would prevent me from dying lmao. (That’s why drinks like Gatorade or liquid IVs have sodium, to replenish your body of the sodium it lost from for example running)
Later on, I developed an ed and I missed juices, sodas, smoothies, and basically any drink that wasn’t water or unsweetened tea.

Also, one of those straws that makes water or milk taste less plain.
I do wanna help clarify one small thing. If you are nauseus, or highly susceptible to nausea like a bariateic surgery patient, water really will be more likely to make you feel ill or vomit. I forget the specific mechanism but when you are nauseus and drink water it can trigger the vomit reflex (I think its how your mouth waters before you vomit so you accidentslly trick your body into vomiting). @@thatvalensteingirl Sorry, I should emphasize the "unsweetened" part. I'm not qualified to say whether or not artificial sweeteners are good for your health, that's besides the point. Also if it's a hot day, just pour the tea over some ice or throw some icecubes into your mug. I've been putting icecubes in my peppermint teas for as long as I've been drinking them lol
If they want to drink what they want to drink while the fuck do you care
I love my Tazo teas
I have fruit teas and I absolutely love them. I used some for smoothies.
This is why I never use artificial sweetners, it seems like they are just so much more addicting than plain sugar. Kiana Docherty actually has a really good video on the science of Diet Coke and why people are so obsessed with these fake sugars. It's a little worrying tbh
yes!! and i’ve heard scary things about some of the dyes they’re prob using
@@FrejaHirst sugary drinks are still bad for your teeth, even if fake sugars are bad for the rest of you. if you're getting cavities, then you're better off not drinking sweet drinks.
Interesting!

Juice/soda tastes even better cause I don’t drink it all the time
I love the ICE brand sparkling flavored water but even that’s a juice to me lol
No surprise they’re all fat except for the og watertok lady lmao. Addiction to sugar is real folks.
I'm sure y'all aren't fooling yourselves into thinking you're drinking water, though

I've been cutting down heavily on sugar, yesterday someone gave me a reese's cup and somehow it tasted sweeter than I felt even straight sugar would taste.

ikr? that was disgusting, water flavored like cake just sounds nasty. imo that's the kinda thing i'd only put in milk or coffee. but water??
these ppl usually had gastric bypass surgery though, so the point is that they can't actually be eating all that much food and need to be drinking a lot of water, even if it's highly adulterated with flavored syrups.
It feels more like a sugar addiction than anything else
Exactly. The way I see it, if people are well-hydrated, I don't care what they have to do to get that hydration.
I use Mio too! Just a little bit, with some ice to make my water nice and cold
When I hear people say "regular water makes me nauseous" all I hear is "I'm too used to drinking flavored water and I don't feel like undoing that bad habit."

It is hurting people though, it's just really insidious that you don't notice
In the UK we have something called squash. It's concentrated liquid fruit flavouring to add to water. It's super common to be offered tea coffee or squash if you don't want a hot drink as a guest.
Thanks for the clear explanation, may I ask, would it be the same with sweeteners, like aspartame for example? And what about alcohol?

Makes me wonder if it has to do in part with the water quality depending on location because most of the water I drink comes from the well on our farm.
or just the fact that most of these people had surgery and water makes them feel sick.
