    My portfolio for the past 30 years has always been self managed and I own 3 shares of Berkshire Hathaway Class A stock (BRK:A) which I bought in at about $17,000 during the mid 90s, I'm currently liquidating some of these positions to incoporate new Gen. Stocks, but am I better off re-investing into Gold as it seems stocks are a little too unstable right now.

      DCAing amongst various assets is a good strategy and can help reduce the impact of market volatility and thus a good strategy if you are looking to compound . However it is important to consider financial advisory when investing .

    I like investing in close-end funds that pay monthly dividends. The trick is to hold long term and reinvest the monthly dividends plus buy more shares on a monthly basis or when ever you can afford to. This can be easily done because close-end funds are bought and sold on the stock market just like regular stock. That’d be enough to create a portfolio that would pay you between $50k to $70k in dividend income

      Nice. People often underestimate financial advisors' importance. Over 50 years of data reveal that those who work with advisors typically earn more than those who go it alone. Dividends are a great thing, but they’re only really effective for passive income when you either have somewheres over 20 to 25 thousand shares of a high yielding stock. Meaning you likely need to have a few hundred thousand if not more invested in it. Re-investing dividends back into the same stock certainly does snowball with compound interest, but you only really start seeing it after 20 years of never stopping and likely needing to add additional money of your own with it….so it’ll be time consuming and costly. The way I see it if you have a million dollars at some point, that’d be enough to create a portfolio that would pay you between 50 to 70 thousand in dividend income

    Time is another factor with dividend income and yields. I bought 1000 shares of BAC in 2008 during the Great Recession at $8/share. At the time, BAC stopped their dividend payouts. When they started the payouts again, it was only $0.01/share, then $0.05/share, and now $0.88/share/year for a 2.58% yield based on a price of $34.16/share.
    But because I bought 1000 shares at $8/share, my actual yield is $0.88/$8.00 = 11%
    My actual yield will increase over the years if/when BAC raises their dividend. And they will likely do so if the stock price increases.
    Point is, start dividend investing early by buying growth stocks that pays a dividend and let time grow your stock price and dividend yield.

    Humphrey I am a new subscriber to your channel and very happy to have come across your 2nd posting. Excellent topics covered. I have a large percentage of SCHD and other dividend ETFs in my IRA (rather than individual stocks as you mentioned in your video since my job requires stock clearance etc.), to avoid any taxes until RMD kicks in at a lower tax rate, also doing the same maximizing my 401 to the limit to take advantage of the amount one can contribute to a ROTH as well as enrolling in a HSA (triple tax) again to further add to my ROTH portfolio. In my taxable I have over 100 lots of BRK.B since it doesn’t payout any dividends or capital gains until one sells, while building on growth as a value stock and mitigating taxes at year end.

  • @rjcake3
    @rjcake3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    One thing not mentioned about Roth IRAs is that contribution limits kick in if your MAGI exceeds $139.5K as a single filer or $219K for joint filers. This likely only applies to a smaller slice of income earners, but something that isn’t mentioned often about Roths.

I wouldn't use QYLD because of the return of capital issue, but JEPI pays out a combination of ROC, qualified and unqualified dividends. People often don't realise this but since dividend yield grows yearly and so does stock value (in optimal scenario) you don't really need to save 1.5 million dollars to get that 5% yield to get 75000 dollars per year. It helps to start investing early though. However since the dividend yield can also go backwards (and the stock value), there's no guarantee in any case this plan works.

    • @alexr568
      @alexr568 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I find this annoying that it’s not even brought up in the video but it’s immensely important. An example is I bought Abbie vie for about 70 a share and it was yielding 6%. A few years later that initial investment is now yielding 7.5% not including the money I made in dividend reinvestment.
      He’s treating the initial investment yield as static, which is very wrong. Investing in a diversified dividend ETF is great. What starts out as an initial say 3.25% yield could grow in let’s say in ten years you’re now reaping 7 or 8% yield l, which is INSANE. You basically are getting a great guaranteed return without ever touching your growing principle.
      I would argue that dividend investing needs to be a greater share of a young persons portfolio along with growth stocks.

    I think it really depends. The best time to buy dividend stocks is when there is a market downturn. I’ve seen some stocks pay 20% yields. Now there is a risk they will pause the dividend if there is a recession but if you can hold it for the long it might pay off when they start paying dividends again to historic distributions.

  • @WilliamChan
    @WilliamChan ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The one thing to add is that what's probably more important than the dividend yield at any point in time is your personal yield _on cost_, which is the yield for the average cost you bought a stock at. If your average cost doesn't change too much, that number will only go up if the company keeps raising their dividend.

      Inflation is gradually going to become part of us and due to that fact any money you keep in cash or in a low-interest account declines in value each year. I realize this video is 6 months old now and I'm not very likely to get a response, but if your goal is to live off dividends wouldn't you be better served having that money in a high yield savings account or CD? Those can pay dividends more often and your usually looking at a rate between 3-4 percent

    • @humphrey
      @humphrey  2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      yes as of right now, but in the past HYSAs were not paying that much. The other nice things of dividends is that if they're automatically reinvested into the share of the stock you own, you're getting compounding returns over time - versus with a HYSA you might just leave it in there.

    In order to live off of dividends you first have to have enough money that you wouldn't necessarily NEED to live off of dividends. Basically you already need to be rich. If I had millions to generate 40-50k a year in dividends I doubt I'd want to even stop doing what I'm doing just to live off 40-50k a year.

    That’s a range of $300-$350K with current assumptions that mirror the past 2-3 year performance.
    I should be able to live off just my Altria dividends by then.

    Roth IRA you pay taxes beforehand. Traditional IRA you pay taxes after. I think it all depends on what tax bracket you expect to be in after retirement. Also the amount you need invested with dividends is more complicated because it is dependent on how many shares you own. Some company shares are more expensive that others. So I’m not sure if your formula takes that into consideration. Nice video though

    I need to look into why taxes have flat barriers and they aren’t on a gradual scale. I feel like we could easily do that now a days so if you make a bit over 40,000 you instantly get 15% taxed and make less than you did if you just made under 40,000 seems like a silly. I feel like it should begin small and scale up to 15% over 25% of the previous number. So it would slowly scale up across 40k-50k from 0-15% then 445k-556k from 15-20%. It would incentivize people to put more towards their capital gains even if it’s over 40k in returns. Idk it just seem like the bump to 15 from 0 is a lot.

    I'm in the higher dividend rate group. My portfolio averages I believe 7.6%. One stat is how compound interest works, while 4-5% is decent, with the rule of 72 we can see that 72/5 = 14.4 years to double your money. For me, it is about 10 years to double. As it stands, I make 32k in dividends a year now. I've still got 30 years to retirement. The way I see it is that I've got a mini-me working and saving an extra 30k a year, which is maybe 10x what I can save if I was starting from scratch. While everyone's risk tolerance is different, I find that an income stream makes some of the math easier for valuations and calculating value.

    Isn't the median number more important than the average number which takes into account all the young and old billionaires and multi multi millionaires which make up the tiny 1% and below?
    We think "average" would be the focus, but really shouldn't be. Most Americans are broke living paycheck to paycheck with little savings, and a reliance on loans, financing and credit cards to get through life paying off debt. The percentages of networth across the country by majority, taking into the considerations of any and all liabilities, is more more important I would think.
