    There is nothing like seeing the sun as it rises, before it shines in full. Such was my impression of the very impressive Amyah when she stopped by my Zulu Language & Culture class while she was on her Howard campus visit. Erudite and nonchalant, she is ready for the world. Thanks Maze family for giving Amyah support by bringing the whole Fam for the visit! Super special thanks to Akeeba for bringing my abashana along! What a day! I hope I and all the people Amyah met made a good case for choosing HU.

Upon visiting my daughter one day at school she realized and said she made the biggest mistake by not attending Spelman. There’s nothing like the sisterhood. I myself have lifelong friends/sistahs because of my attending Spelman. What most don’t know is that you can also take classes at Morehouse (all male college) across the street as well as Clark. Spelman has been the #1 HBCU for years and there’s a reason why.

She's often been silent, in the background, looking in and processing. She is a thinker and has sooooo much talent that we have only seen glimpses of. I truly hope that she has a happy, bright, successful future, filled with wonderful adventures. This is just the beginning for her and I know you are extremely proud of her. Amaya is certainly a gem. You may still have an accent speaking a foreign language, but your accent will be clear and understandable, just like his English accent is clear to us.

I've watched other large families and there is just something how you are one on one nurturing and personal with each child and this video is a perfect example. Im a grandmother homeschooling my 5 year old granddaughter. May I ask you Alena how did your parents raise you? What were their careers? Did they make education a priority, or was that something inside you? Did you also come from a large family? Congratulations on your new baby. All your of your children are precious. Amaya should be able to get a full scholarship. My cousin got a full scholarship there. Im very proud of Amaya. Your baby is so peaceful, amazing he slept through all the excitement. Amaya will love HU. The camaraderie is something difficult to find at PWIs. Korea is so faraway and might be too great of a culture shock as an undergraduate.🥰Be safe.

    Some of my ancestors were professors at Howard and I last walked the campus about a year ago. At that time, there were protests about tuition costs. The campus' green spaces were also filled with tents protesting student housing conditions. I don't think Howard's student and alumni support can be matched, but they have to be weighed against the college's ongoing issues. Best of luck in your college search.

      I forgot about the students walkout protests due to housing issues at Howard after students became ill due to mold in some of the dorms. My niece attended 2014-2018 but moved off campus her junior year but the two years she lived in the newer dorm she had no problem. I know HU sold many of its properties to big developers so Im not sure about the housing situation but those parents pay a hefty fee for their children to attend HU. So surely 2 years later housing has improved.

    At 15:24 the Howard U student's cautionary advice is exactly why, I, as an African American did NOT elect to attend an HBCU. The student says, " Bear in mind that when they can't separate you by race, they separate you by class, so there is elitism here. But you come into Howard knowing that."
    I always suspected this. Divide and conquer tactics. Instead of Blacks unifying for love of self, community and education in a homogenous environment, they still find a way to perpetuate division, exclusion and divisiveness. As hurtful as racism is, elitism, colorism and classism by one's own people hurts worse. Spike Lee's movie "School Daze" alluded to this issue. Unfortunately, the historical origins of these HBCUs is that they were founded by the Freedmans Bureau and Blacks who got to attend often looked down their noses at dark-skinned and or less affluent Blacks and perpetuated exclusion tactics modeled after white racism to reject their own kind. Lawrence Otis Graham's book "Our Kind if People" deep dives into this disgraceful practice of Black on Black elitism, classism and colorism. Amayah should keep her options open and go where she will feel free to be herself.

    • @wittykita
      @wittykita ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I stopped reading when you said you did not attend an HBCU....soo the classism and social divide was not your experience. My point is we live in America, a place where we have been led to believe we are inferior. So yes there is no part that isn't touched by racism and classism. That being said I work at a law firm where I see HBCU graduates and they to me have a better grasp of who they are and what we should be striving for, when compared to the PWI graduates I see. That comfort comes from knowing who you are and HBCU's excel on teaching that...
