In NYC, I prefer 2x4s with the metals to make the wall stronger when securing the sheetrock. Also, I used Durock all around from the floor to 3 feet and the rest of the wall, using mold resistand drywall to finish the wall. If your good a taping, no one can know the difference when you finally finish the wall. Plus, in case you have any water backups, you dont have to worry about mold and mildew issues when the place drys.
Last but not least, I use cermaic tiles in a basement for fear of water backups and since its much easier to clean and maintain.

Job well done here. I did a complete bathroom remodel for my daughter's home using the same sheetrock material you have used & bought locally. I used a conventional 3/8" variable speed DeWalt drill for my screws & got pretty good at after some practice setting the screw depth correctly. Absolutely nothing wrong with using the steel studs on this project, came out beautiful. The sheetrock work I did was my 1st major sheetrock project as it came out gorgeous doing it the old school way, priming & painting it with a roller... ( I also installed 2" thermax, reflection on both sides between the original native cut studs that were laid flat. )... ( She has a quite & warm bathroom now )... ( She is also one happy camper... )

Great video. Checking with a local inspector about requirements is a great idea and can avoid having to re-do the job in the future. I'm getting ready to move into a new house with an unfinished basement in an area where I'm totally unfamiliar with the code, so checking with an inspector is a must. It's really confusing about the need for a vapor barrier, but an inspector should be able to clear this up.
I just finished painting my basement with a similar paint sprayer. I went top to bottom instead of side to side though, and it made it much easier to do a 2-tone wall with a chair rail, and it came out great! I love the indoor project / renovation work, hope we get to see more of this!
Also, I grew up with GWP's at home, and Oots looks just like my old family dog Beemer (His official name was Bristle Mouthed Will, or BMW, so Beemer seemed appropriate!).

Since the walls aren't structural you can save on material by going 24' on center with the steal studs! And next time when using a sprayer do all the corners and edges first then fill in the middle it makes it look much better and it speeds up the process as well

Great video. Nice work. BUT 2 you do need vapor barrier against block wall because any moisture seepage will condense on drywall (unless you live in the desert) and with metal studs you have R-0 insulation every 16". You'd see it clearly on a thermal imager.

Years ago I finished a basement using steel studs and swore I'd never use wood in this application again. Like you said, everything is straight and consistent. Also, NO sawdust! Instead of screwing the studs onto the top and bottom plates, I used the screws into the horizontal drywall to keep everything rigid and square. I set the drywall on a 1x3 to space it off the floor, then laid out lines 16 o.c. on the drywall. All I needed to do was to locate the bottom screw on each stud, plumbed it, and followed the vertical line up the drywall to locate the screws. The weight of the drywall and the tight fit into the top and bottom plates held everything in place.
Isn’t the bottom metal plate supposed to rest on some insulation strip?

Would have been nice to see how you addressed the steel studs top plate on that outside window wall. Looked like there was some kind of bracket, but you didn't even mention those. Also, overspray into areas you don't want paint is something to mention. Those carpeted stairs surely got some paint on them. I've used Wagner sprayer inside before and litteraly every little thing that wasn't protected got paint specks all over them, even things the sprayer never got near. Any comments would be appreciated.
Trust me I would have liked to mention a heck of a lot more but there is only so much I can cram into a video before it gets too long that no one will watch. I’m going to remove the carpet on those stairs so it didn’t matter.

For all the people saying he's cutting the studs upside down or installing them the wrong way, it's irrelevant which way you put them as long as they're all the same. One thing I'll say though for anyone looking to do this; don't get self tapping screws if you're working with light gauge material. You want just a fine thread wafer or pan head type framing screw and same goes for when you drywall onto light gauge studs. Just a fine thread drywall screw. Also take advantage of the framing and stand your sheets up to make the taping easier, faster, and have a more plumb wall in the end.
Another advantage to using metal studs instead of wood is you make super cool sparks cutting the steel!

Not worried about leaks in your foundation with the non-waterproof insulation straight up against the concrete foundation?

Also, that concrete may wick up moisture and it being stuck in-between the C-channels isn’t good. A barrier for the bottom plate would be insurance against that.

i do commercial metal stud framing and the studs are upside down the small part of the cut holes are supposed to point down
JosephD Whitt yeah and he could use his speed square to score his mark with his razor and bend and fold for the cut instead of doing the whole cut with snips only the side
I knew I was right. Yes I know the small part goes down.
The small part goes down to allow the flex(wire) to sit down in it. I do commercial remodels so this is literally all I do.
It’s the same in residential metal framing. But it’s funny to see this guy teaching others about metal framing . He has the basic idea of it but for sure he doesn’t know how to do it 100% correct.
Metal studs in a residential home is just stupid to begin with
If u use a razor knife to score the back side of the track/stud u can cut each side and fold it back and forth and it will leave a nice cut. Also u can drill through the metal track because a masonry bit is well hardened as long as it’s not heavy gauge track. Not trying to knock ur work just trying to help. Great job.
I tried drilling through the metal track with the mason bit and it wasn’t having it. It was at that point I decided to get the ramset.

I love these ideas. Code compliant Simple strong and economical and something that even I wouldn’t hesitate to tackle. Now I need your help how to stop procrastinating. Hahahahha
Missed putting vapour barrier under the bottom plate of the framing.... Also should have backrolled the paint if you are spraying, at the very least the final coat....you also should have used different sizes of knives for drywall mud, 4" to tape, 8" second coat, 10/12" for final.

Painting with a sprayer machine leaves an uneven texture unless you level 5 all the walls. Also, if you would've roll the 2 coats of paint, future touch ups and repaints will be much easier, also sanding walls is essential after priming for the perfect paint bond, and unwanted textures. Cool video! Keep it up!!!!

Yeah and those small gimmicky sprayers dont really do that great of a job. Get a nice Greco 650. You can rent them from sherwin William's. Beats paying a couple grand for them.
And when you spray the walls, you should always backroll them. Spray tips are really faulty and will leave lines.

i've been looking for info on building w steel studs, and, i have to say this has been one of the best if not the best so far. There are a few questions I would ask (why no sill gasket underneath floor plate? eg), but overall great video.

did you use a dry wall knife to remove the drywall and ceiling?
Was super impressed that you were competent in steel and wood.... Then you used the steel studs upside down and cut off the bottom of the stud. Also with steel studs you screw the soft side of the stud first so the the studs do not rock and make the joint at the seam uneven. Otherwise exceptional job.
You forgot to install protection for metal runner. Asphalt felt paper strip for metal isolator espacially on basement. It will protect the metal runner from moisture and eventuslly rusting.

Don't use an hvlp. Use an airless. Would you cut an acre sized lawn with a weed eater? NO. This is stupid and just lowes selling you products they have an over stock of.

Where I live you can screw the top plate of the wall into the floor joists. You must have 1 inch gap. I would just drill a hole in the metal channel and use a long screw.

It’s much faster and more efficient to layout everything first for top track and bottom track. Then once you finish doing layout you cut and install all your top and bottom track. once tracks are all installed you pull 16 oc layout for studs(use a laser) layout doors widows then install studs. It’s much faster to frame metal that way instead of the way you’ve shown. But hey it turned fine. But could have saved a lot of time doing it a little more efficiently
COuld've done 24" as it's non load bearing
24” if you wanna be cheep and do low quality work. Most basement exterior walls aren’t load baring, I’ve always framed 16 OC on all walls unless specified in plans and I’ve never seen 24” layout for walls on any plans in my 12 years of framing. The only time a 24” layout is mainly used is ceiling drops, soffit or trusses. If I was a home owner and saw my walls built 24 oc I’d either fire him and get a new contractor or make him do it right. Not to mention the inspection probably wouldn’t pass, at least in my city
@@DaMadDad Working down in Australia and Nz, we did 24 (600's) all the time. I only ever do 16 here in canada but the extra 8 inches will literally make zero difference in this scenario. I don't think anyone's going to be running through the wall any time soon.
Here in America we don’t frame walls 24” on anything other then a shed. 24” layout would cut a lot of time and money I agree, it does give you less backing for mounting things tho, but all in all if it’s non load barring 24” layout I don’t disagree with. Inspectors and home owners would disagree here. Also I It just looks more quality and complete when you do 16 OC I feel

Great video. Question I saw on another video where the contractor recommended to use 2x4 on the floor then to lay the metal frame boards on top. Just in case of water issues in the future. Thoughts on this. I have new construction and we have sump pump and back up cause we live in a water prone area. I mean the chances

That ceiling would look mighty good with Carr siding finished with a satin lacquer.
What do you do if you cant penetrate the concrete? I had a drainage system put in. Is there a glue that can be used?

What's your plan for the ceiling? I'm using ceilume noise-reducing tiles here. Would have loved to just drywall it, but that's not an option given all the access needed in the basement here.
did you find a big difference between vertical and horrizontal for the paint? or just preference?
so with the metal tracks, there is no need to be butted up against the wall? im asking as my walls are definatly not straight from end to end, and I already have installed 1 inch foamboard on there, I wanted to leave at least an Inch-Inch and a half between the foamboard and the steel track due to wall warping and such.
You need Lowe’s to hook you up with a cross line laser level. A must have for any home renovation.

Should have used a deflection track at the head of the wall to prevent load transfer from joists above.
not worked with metal studs myself, is there a reason to not layout the wall sections on the floor and tilt up? Based more on floor and joist unevenness?
be sure to attach longitudinal beams to the ceiling and floor?
The approximate home value finishing your basement adds does not always equal the construction costs. So just be aware people, finishing your basement doesn't always return on investment, it's normally a convenience of life and enjoyment project while you're living in the space.

Im pretty sure he put the paper upside down. There is a little ridge on the paper, and it goes IN the mud. This way when you sand the mud after, you wont cut the paper on the ridge with the sand paper !! Good job nonetheless !! Also when doing corners, you simply fold ON the ridge gives you a nice 90 degrees.
Can you still add baseboard molding and shoot the Brad nail into the metal bottom plate ??
Self tapping into wood? Are those 20 or 25 gauge studs? Not trying to hate
