If you're looking for a nice Summer evening mountain biking loop near Portland, Oregon, where you can explore Trillium Lake, ride up to Government Camp, ride gravel road instead of highway 26 and descend on the Pioneer Bridle Trail all the way back to Rhododendron, this is a worthy loop. The Still Creek Road is an awesome gravel road with minimal car traffic that connects Rhododendron to Trillium Lake. Pioneer Bridle is a single track, natural surface trail that connects Rhododendron to Government Camp. You could add an additional loop of Westleg Road to Timberline to Town to create a figure eight if you've got some extra time.

don't you just pedal up the ski hill winter climb trail on the left of the slope to pick up the trail?

You can do that too, but the climb up Mucoy street is easier and gets you to the same place.
