This is funny. Humans do the same things generation to generation without ever understanding how it, the exact same thing, went down in the previous generation. Not until they are over and done and another generation has moved in and pushed them out. Then a few of the smart ones will realize it was all much ado about nothing. And on and on forever. It's funny because everyone gets fooled while thinking they are involved in some life and society changing drama when it's exactly not that. So it's not exactly that politics is boring as that questioner pointed out but rather it's a mostly meaningless distraction from real life. The ones that wake up to all this will either get bitter or laugh and watch the show and move on to something important. I highly recommend the latter.

What's true is there are multiple left/right axes, which some people go either way on, like USA Dems and Blair New Labourites (left on liberal social policy, right on liberal economics). But the axial distinctions are clear and plain. The alt-left is hard to identify because it would connote a form of leftist abusiveness, which is not on any left politics axis. The political left, as a rule, champion civility and are again, as a rule, usually only aggressive as a form of passion, whereas aggression on the right is usually sinister. The old horn that the left are corrupt in the form of unions is false, that corruption historically was an infiltration of the unions by the far more right wing facist style mafia. In like manner, the reason the audience member might think the divide is vague is because the political left in the UK and USA has been infiltrated by right wingers - lifestyle liberals and hedonists who favor self-serving austerity policies inflicted upon others.
