Ordering those metal servos now, thanks for the tip! Luckily I havent had a single crash with my xk x450 with about 10 packs ran, knock on wood lol. Think I will wait until the new servos arrive and fly some of my other planes to get the dust off =) Take care bro & keep it goin!

This is the second review of the XK I’ve seen where someone has it in 3D mode and hits the ground. It’s like the x350. It has a controlled mode and a 3D flight mode where the x350 motors reverse to allow stunts. The x450 reverses the entire motor housing rather than just changing the motors spin direction. My guess is the servo was stripped by trying to force it up after being in 3D mode and not disconnecting the battery first.
In the other guys vid he crashed it 3 times in a row by being too low and in 3D. Motors pointed down every time. He couldn’t move them till he disconnected the battery every time.
It’s also deceptive to show the motors and wires hanging out of the 450 like that happened in a crash, when you had partly disassembled it.
That's a shame. I have the XK X520 and it has been exploded twice and still flying on original components.

I still have my original servos, even after a crash into a tree, where I show how to fix the linkage to the motor with nylon control horns. The red 3g switch, I moved to the left side of the transmitter. Note, it is inoperative in multirotor mode and only works when in airplane mode. Good idea to change to metal gears in all models. Nice job.
Wow I just got this and I feel like now if I crash it, it's all over. Really sad how few mention this, buyers should at least be made aware in reviews that the servos are plastic and aren't going to take too kindly to crashes. I better check all the screws on everything over on mine as well, I was going to anyway but now I'lll be exta diligent. Thanks for the heads up.

Hi Justin, I bought the metal servos and have installed the first one but I have a problem :) The servo is working in reverse to the other one. I don't understand this as there is only one way the servo can be installed. As the 3 wire hook up is power, ground and signal there is no way that is wrong... Any ideas ?? Regards, Pete
you have to go into servo and change internal wiring...wires other than the data, pos, neg coming out. or have to find reverse direction servos..funny this guy not explain that. i been at this since september this year and i know that already
Great video and Interesting advice. I have a XK450 and use in flight mode most of the time, no issues with a crash yet! The drone mode is ideal for getting it up in the air to where you want before flight mode and landing again in a tight space, or even back to your hand. I found that the best way to slow down quick is to flip to vertical node which stops it real fast and is great for avoiding a potential crash. A quick flip from vertical back to drone and you have control again, too long in vertical and it will get blown away if high up, just like a kite.
If you want a cheaper battery then search for 1116166 from BG as I have found this battery fits well and lasts longer, only problem is you need to solder on your own XT30 as it comes with JST. Am also using Foxeer camera and backpack AKK vtx to FPV mine.
Justin, I'd like to follow your advice and swap the servos for the metal ones, but not have soldered on servos before. Do you need a tool to calibrate the range? Also how do you know they are the correct way round? I know that you can reverse the direction via most regular Transmitter settings but this is a bespoke Tx. Would appreciate any more advice on how you fit them in and make sure they are good to go before committing to a flight. Thanks

@old4570.com The longer you are in the hobby the more you get use to that sort of thing happening brother,try adding some protection on the FC some sort of thermal coating should help it if you ever go into tall grass again,even plastic dip will help,i've done this to my FC boards on my quads and planes,you might be surprised how good it is,with the plastic dip you can just peel it off if need be,you can find both products online especially auction websites hint hint.😉

Both motor naceles should have been shrouded completely in foam like the X520. Mounting a plastic shell to cover the servo arms going to the motors to shield them from impact might help more than just buying tougher servos. Airplane mode is death for both the X450 and M02...why I don't know because the X520 can be flown in airplane mode sooooo slow almost to a hover, even while turning. It feels like a RC boat floating on water instead of an aircraft. I would think either higher KV motors and/or triblade props would help it churn more air in airplane mode and keep it from stalling out.
I agreed. I am selling my X450. It is a poor design to use plastic servos to drive the motors mounted on plastic housing. I scared to fly in the airplane mode because it falls from the sky without any sign. As for the drone mode, it is too slow.
Problem is guards would have to be durable plastic in the front and thin enough not to be ducts. Plus big enough to allow the tilt of the prop forward. This design has issues.
Anyone try to use tri-blades to solve the mid air stall problem.
Canards mounted on carbon fiber shafts through the nose just below the plain of the wings. Stops the nose stall and X450 becomes what it should alwarys have been

The X 450 is very delicate and if you crash it roughly it will break. I own one. I would like to modifi mine before I break it.
But the extra parts pack too. The articulating arm moving the motors up and down breaks too.
What a superb reviewer you are , you are correct about the servo problem , I had great fun with the x450 until yes it packed up because of the servos , so pleased that you gave info on where to get some decent servos , excellent channel you have and you are always so laid back about everything , 5 stars mate

I had a similar experience with mine. I reluctantly ordered the original servos just because I wasn’t smart enough to figure out what upgrade to get. After this video, I ordered your suggested servo for when I crash it again. Which I will. Thanks so much for the tip. This is a very fun plane, but I wouldn’t say suitable for beginners in airplane mode.

Now way cool, Great info, as I am doing homework to see which is "Best" your the only one with damage. I believe what ya went through, as far as other tubers and no damage they are not as aggressive with them. However if first time flyer or gift for kid What is NEEDED TO BE KNOWN definitely shown here.

I had the same problem. The two motors turned 90 degree down and needed to replace both servos with the original ones. It is a shame that many youtubers did not mention that. Do you have any idea why the X450 suddenly crashed. I was flying drone mode, then, switched to airplane mode. 5 sec after, it fell from the sky.
I had a similar problem with mine in airplane mode. It’s like the flight controller flips out for a second. As you saw in the video. It shouldn’t flip into the ground like that. - yeah other TH-camrs are going for that $$$ grab. This is an issue and should be mentioned to buyers.
The same thing happened to me, after that a servo broke, the question is, why do the motors turn down? Metal gear servos do not change anything, they may only last longer.
I think it's a bug in flight control.

Hey Justin! Banggood sent me a control board instead these Pro-Tronic 7350 5g Servos. Even payed extra for fast shipping and they took a month to get here from the USA Warehouse, lol. Do you know anyone at Banggood that can fix this and send me the Servos? I have emailed them twice with order #,pics, and a detailed explanation with no response back from them... Thanks man!
I'm still figuring out how to add comments in TH-cam. I agree, the XK X450 can have a demon like temperament and its fragile, not a good combo. BG is out of the servo you suggested, know of another servo? I had a few impressive flights in all modes before a final light hover landing in the grass caused both the front prop units to fold completely under and stick at 180 degrees of vertical takeoff setting, (upside-down) is it possessed ??? This stripped and burned up both front prop servos, it ended with a wining sound I couldn't stop. I guess that was the servo motors spinning to their hot hellish death, the servo case was even a little melted. No other damage. I'm also concerned about installing new XK servos with the correct setting for full function and aligning both exactly the same, I assume that is necessary along with an exorcism to cast out the demons. Can my X450 receive this transmission? Has anyone been killed by one of these things?

Do you know any replacement props? I hate to wait for them to ship from china, also the original are very brittle, I spend them really fast. I guess they have to be brittle, if they weren't my servos would already be stripped too. I also broke the engine mount, but I managed to design and 3D print a replacement before a new came from china. I can send the STL file if anyone is interested.

You make some great points sir..metal servos would have been better...I have flown my XK X450 9 batteries and mostly in airplane mode...got enuff quads....kept it high and no problems so far...I bought it as a goof to just fly during my lunch at work...I am impressed with it for the money...I also fly RC Planes and this bird made me smile....
The fpv camera link doesn't work I have no idea what these parts are but I'm dying to get some. Can you make a video if you haven't about these parts and how to assemble them and what all you need on a budget. Like I want to add some cameras to some RC airplanes just getting into the hobby already lost my first plane got away from me in the Wind. I mean I have some idea but not entirely sure but the little plugs are they're going to the board what antenna what goggles video transmitter can I use my phone? Or do I need to buy the goggles.
Fkyea... Servos are the first thing that failed. One of them stripped so quickly it developed a race condition (spinning out of control) and heated up quickly. I ordered the servos and they are out of stock. Bummer!
Hi Justin.I watch your videos all the time,but never had a fix tip for anything I flew,until now.I just recieved my X450 and haven't put it together yet.I will order the servos and install them before my first flight.All of the reviews mentioned broken propellers, so I purchased a few sets,but no mention of broken servos.Would you advise reinforcement of any particular area where the servos mount while I replace them at the same time?I only noticed you repairing the nose,and don't know if any damage occurred in the servo area.Thanks for the heads up, I'm tired of drone failures and thought this was a great way to get into r/c planes. How do you add a VTX and cam for FPV to the XK450? How do you wire it?
i'm new at this, but i believe you just plug camera into transmitter and power with separate battery. so have to make room in there for all that. the camera and trans he suggests is obsolete already and hard to find.
Additionally, make sure to put Blue Lock-Tite on the prop nuts. I had a mostly successful maiden - Had one hard landing and broke a gimble. 1 drop of CA fixed it, BUT the prop nut was missing from the motor with the broken gimble. Perhaps the reason for the hard landing? I did order the metal gear servos.

I have 2 batteries and once plugged into wall the light stays red for maybe 5 minutes and then turns off so im stuck with 2 batteries that will not charge. Any pointers anybody?

Thanks for the info. ! I have the 450 and mine did EXACTLY what you said would happen, AND on my first flight with it. ! Left motor got bent completely down, also broke the prop, the props are way too brittle. So I’m gonna pick me up a couple of these servos and try again. Many thanks !
Absolutely spot on Justin. I have the XK 450 and stripped a motor servo gear. I replaced with a metal servo. I will probably change out the other motor. I love this bird. In fact, I purchased a second one. This was a hit with my RC club indoor flights this Winter..

I found that you can change the connection to motors to up instead of down and the servo arms go up as well. then servo arms can not hit ground any longer & life is much longer. you will need to be sure to reset servo arm angle, so it is straight up for drone mode, but goes straight for airplane mode. the best way to test is take props off, engage motors fully, then the servos can move motors.

I reversed both servo arms 180deg so that they now face upwards so push rods are above engine nacelle. See if it helps in case of landing in long grass !

I generally, almost always take good care of my aircraft fleet. I have Fixed wing airplanes, over 40 Coaxial helicopter, two fixed pitch helps, and 50 plus quads, or drones as people prefer to call them.
I have 8 or 9 FPV drones, a Syma X8c, ZLRC Beast Pro 2, aSG700D, a Cheerson CX30, and 2 Hubsan H5p7s, an A and a D series. Also the Hubsan H105D, and a Cheerson CX30.
I like the FPV stuff. But fixed wing airplanes are not quite so cool. They're too fast. Quads, ya can just stop.
O I thought an airplanes thi can pause in flight when want to.
Mine should arrive in a few days. I'm gonna make a few mods. A pair of pine, plastic or coat hanger ' nerves bars in front of the props, if possible.
I'll balance it. Maybe even a strip of thin basswood on the leading wing edge.
man, that good price on x450. the jjrc m02 can't be had at this point and most of the stuff he recommends is no more 2yrs later.
I got these servos but they are reversed is there a trick to reverse them to make it work?
Maybe a stupid question, but I'm new to drones and I just bought the X450 and 2 of those PTK 7350 Metal Gear Servos you recommended. Now I'm in the process of putting them into the plane and I'm wondering, does it matter in which direction the arm is pointing or do I just need to more or less install it as the old (plastic) servo? And I guess it needs calibration, or how does the servo know which angles are the correct ones to have to propeller vertical or horizontal? Do I need to calibrate it manually and how do I do so?

receiver regulates servo and servo has center point that is known to servo electronics...the problem here is, and the experienced youtube guy doesn't even mention, is direction of servo. if the x450 has a reverse direction servo in it and those metal replacements are all forward direction servos...there is problem. you will have to disassemble the servo and rewire to reverse its direction..not easy task with micro servo. I find if funny that not a single person has posted on that point in 2yrs. My x450 is on the way with 5g servos so i find out and post it up.

Hi Justin. I ordered & installed the metal servos you suggested. I found that the arms rotate the wrong way so I just opened the back & put them in the opposite connectors & now they spin the right way. Now my plane just spins round & round very fast. Any idea what I’ve done wrong. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks mate
you can't do it like that, must go into servo and rewire, not the wires that come out, ie, data, pos, neg, but other internal wires that tell it what direction to go.

Pay attention to the micro servo you recommend. I bought them but unfortunately they are too tight so they do not fasten firmly and the gear does not come out at the right height. When I take off the helicopter suddenly starts to rotate around its vertical axis. What could be wrong? Thanks.

We've got 4 of the X520 V-tols that are still flying after a year plus (some glue & tape added but everything else original) but we're not counting on a similar durability rating on the 4 X450s we've not long acquired! ;-) Fun toys though. Oh and the multi protocol boys have just about worked out the protocols for both.
So, it can be binded to my devo 10 or junper now. Where can I find the protocol?
If motor have some free movement , problem may be in the part that looks like servo arm connected to the motor holder.

My experience with the X450 is both the frame and electronics are too fragile. It's not only the servos, but my main board just smoke after the 3rd flight for some unknown reason. Replacing the main board ,then encounter that the right motor could not synch with the left motor and would sometime stop spinning....suspect a faulty ESC or motor.
mine board smoked too. i put new one in but they don't spin. what should i do
@@williamcoleman8372 check if all the wires to the main board are connected. It could be a faulty esc board
how hard to replace the board...sounds like esc bad...maybe swap motors to find out

The red button only works when you're in plane mode it takes off the auto level Auto stabilization you'll be able to do flips and barrel rolls in other words once you push the red button push it again brings the auto level back
there is still stabilization in plane mode just not on the red button .for the record lol

Good advise, I had to replace one with stripped gears after landing after Prop got caught in bit of long grass.
The same thing happened to me, after that a servo broke, the question is, why do the motors turn down? Metal gear servos do not change anything, they may only last longer.
I think it's a bug in flight control.

a cheaper smaller drone so incase you break it there only like $15-$30
look at the OMPhobby s720. cheap fast and has landing gear and the unique design to allow the wings and tail to break off like lego pieces in the event of a crash. its in a stunt plane configuration but also makes a better glider than the companies glider version. its a brushless 2s plane 718mm wing span which is the perfect back yard flyer size in my opinion.

Any idea what this aircraft does if it failsafes? For example if flying in airplane mode and loses signal? What does it do? Does it go to hover mode and land or just drop?
You will need to check direction of movement of any new servos you change out. You will either need to rewire inside of servo to change direction or solder in an electronic servo reverser. Only one will need to be reversed. Check direction without being connected to motor, to keep from putting servo that is going wrong direction from being put in a bind.
