      6G is the position you have when you weld the joint. 6G or Arkansas bellhole is the pipe on a 45 degree angle with no way to rotate the pipe on that angle. Look up 1G, 2G,3G,4G and 5G as positions and rotations of the pipe as it is being welded. 6G being the hardest to weld!

    My ex husband is a welder and my favorite was always draggin up , I use the weed burner to start a real good fire in the fire pit 😂, and I’ll never forget when an operator a few years ago was talking about some girls he would take back to the housing and in the mornings if I saw the girls stumbling out he’d laugh and say “wine em dine em pipeline em. “ lol

Anyway, see a lot of people saying hand on here. We call people hand too. But the guys that aren’t gonna make it, we call fingers. Cause they ain’t never gonna make a hand .

    You might already know this but pipe bevels used to be 37 and 1/2 degrees.The old weld weaves were uphill and wide.The Trans Alaska Pipeline reduced that bevel to 30 degrees.What allowed this was high penetration down hill rods .What was called the" cell 80".A German rod and forerunner of today's 80xxseries down hill pipe welding rods.Less weld downhill therefore faster with less heat affected zones.On the 48 inch the landing was 1/16th and gap 3/32.

    Back in the 60s and early 70s (I'm 75) we used to sometimes send the bussy to town to get us some "jungle" which was bread and ham and all the makings for lunch sandwiches. Ever heard "jungle" used that way Austin?

    • @lsanderson40

    Hey Justin, this one had my friends in stitches! They never seen a pipeline, much less worked one. I got excited to share this one, and of course, I had to define the terms before you did! :))
    I scored a 100%, and they laughed their ....off!
    Thank you, 'Hand'!
    'Hand' : That guy or gal you may work with and respect for their ability on the pipelines, or that guy or gal that you see in the store (but never met) in their starched shirts, puffy hats, ....and you know just by looking at him/her, that he or she is a 'pipeline hand'.
    Great video! Brings back fond memories!
    Thank you very much!

    Here in Utah we call them ditch torches but use them to burn weeds. Here in the high desert ditches and canals might be the only area around for miles with water. It is common for weeds 'think tumble' to grow or collect in these ditches. To avoid the vegetation clogging the canals you walk the banks with your ditch torch burning them, hence weed torch I would imagine.

      Darin Rothwell nah it’s stick using two rods basically you have one in your stinger like normal and then you have one in your hand like a filler rod like you would tig and then use that to help fill bigger gaps or if the rod is too thin that’s what Texas tig is

    Bell holes are a lot better now than when I was working. The ditch used to be straight up 20 feet with no protection. Often it was caving in. I was popular as a helper because I didn't mind digging out a larger bell whole so the older welders could get far back from the pipe so they could see the bevel on the bottom.

    Weed burner could also mean there was a stoner on the job, as in we sent that weed burner down the road. Welded lots of pipe, thick pipe, thin pipe, long pipe and short pipe all up-hill and inside the perimeter of the Chevron Refinery El Segundo Ca. If you are serious and want to advance your trade as a welder I suggest getting a copy of "Welding Terms and Definitions" published by the American Welding Society, Miami Fl. Thanks Austin I learned a few things from your presentation.

    When y'all are working off a skid do you take your welding machine off your truck to use or does the company have machines on there for you?
    Also I haven't been around a SA 200. Since it is a DC machine, is the plug on the front just for the remote or can you use it for a grinder or other electrical tools?

      Use a couple of reciprocating saw blades to set your gap. Put a 1/16" landing on your bevels. Tack 4 places about 1" long. Set up at 3 Rd gear and 45. Keep your rod pointed at the center of the pipe. Push the rod into the bevels. The flux should rub on the pipe as you go.

    A Weed Burner is also known as a Pear Burner because ranchers used to burn the thorns off of prickly pear so their cattle/ goats could eat them during a drought.

    a weed burner is just that. sometimes used by Texas ranchers to " burn pear" (prickly pear cactus). This burns the spikes off sufficiently so the cows can eat it. Also, a Tex-Mex dish is napolito, which is prickly pear prepared as a vegetable, with out the spikes of course.

    In Canada the weed burner is called the Tiger torch as Tiger is a popular brand that makes them here.

  • @formerfarmer1718
    @formerfarmer1718 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    “Weed burner” is used because in some cropping areas propane burners are used to burn weeds in the row without damaging the crop. A small weed can be burned (killed) without damage to the bigger crop like corn or cotton for instance.

    Sloppin dope. Old slang. I started off in “64 sloppin’ dope. Did that cross country until about “74/“75. Then the outlawed the Berricks enamel (hot door). Miserable (and I mean miserable) stuff to work with. Always had a job though. That was a good reason to get in the operators, because nobody wanted to pull the dope pot. The smoke would just blister you. Now you need to have a full hazmat team to take it off of the pipe. Worked on the pipeline for fifty years. I’m 75 years old and i’m surprised I’m still alive working in that crap. Lost a few friends from melanoma. So far my lungs are doing great. My dad worked in that still for years and got through it too. How did you know if it was bad dope or good dope (asphalt tar)? When you pulled up on the right a way in the winter time in Wyoming and the welders were eating lunch by the pot to keep warm.😅😂🤣

    Stupid question. What are the pipes moving. Gas? Crude?

    Actually it's a roofing torch. It was for melting tar in the roofing trade. But yes it's been used to burn weeds, which truthfully it doesn't do a very good job at.

    Just a question but when your welding on pipe do you weld vertical up for more penetration

    • @ronniemonday
      @ronniemonday 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope, all down hand!

    • @farmmuff
      @farmmuff 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pipeline code calls for downhill. Too much penetration can be a problem. Remember, stuff goes through that pipe.

      Downhill is simply for speed. Use it a lot on storage tanks here in UK, althought you get caught welding any pass at all on a pipe butt downhill?... Youd be sacked on the spot
      Easier than uphill roots too.

    Dingle bells, on the rig they have ruff necks. Down hand, suck back. Hot pass, stringer bead. Welding bug.
