For dry hopping, I use a keg with an enclosed hop spider with the dip tube running through it. The hops roam free on the outside of the spider and are then filtered out when I transfer to a serving keg. I have a Spike Flex and the Bouncer filter would allow me to dry hop in the Flex - definitely worth checking out. Thanks for sharing.
I use a 1 micron filter from my fermenter to the keg. This is only on lagers and beers that I don't want sediment in. The floating dip tube of the fermenter helps with keeping yeast and hop debris out. All of my dry hop beer I use a hop sack to help with debris as well, this also helps with really keeping grassy notes down. To clean and sanitize the filter, I just go keg to keg. Then it will be sanitized and full of co2.
I use a similar one from amazon. It has the same blue filter. Attach to fermenter, purge line with beer then attach to keg. The purged beer usually has junk in it anyways. I also tighten the filter housing a little with a pipe wrench to get a good seal.
I’m still using a coverted water filter with 3micron disposable filters and it’s awkward and clunky to use. Looking to upgrade. Happy to see you filtering a hazy, lots of debate in that. I’m back to using hop bags for all my dry hops to avoid clogging keg poppets which is a big issue for me. Any debris at all clogs them up good and taking them apart without oxygenation is near impossible. Clogged kegerator is a embarrassing too.
That's a LOT of hop sludge! I have yet to buy a filter. Something like this looks interesting and much easier to use than the kind of filters that were available 20 years ago when I last looked into the topic. I may have to revisit this topic and look into this gadget. Thanks!
I agree, I would use this with heavily dry hopped IPA and a beer that I make with toasted coconut flakes. In the past I've run these through a 10 micron filter and wondered about stripping out flavor and aroma.
one note of caution using the Bouncer MD. check the flange area where the seal seats. I don't know if I over tightend or what. I didn't realize I had a crack around mine and the seal became displaced when tightened. I ended up oxidixing 2 x 12 gal batches of NEIPA before figuring out where the air was getting in. I was replacing the seal when I noticed the crack. Worked great for first 10 batches are so.
I bought one of the ‘standard’ bouncers for transferring my neipas from an idea similar to what you were thinking. However I commonly run into an issue when transferring with gravity. I typically follow your sanitize/purge procedure, then I will run maybe a quarter cup of beer through the line to remove oxygen. The issue arises when any bubble or air enters the filter. I will lose the siphon and it is extremely difficult to get it going again. I ferment in spike flex fermenters and they are only rated to 2psi so pressure transfer is not an option

Thanks for sharing this info. I use the BouncerMD version with the red filter. Like you said, it is nice for keeping the particles out of the keg. For me it is especially useful to keep the keg quick release from getting plugged during pressure transfer (~8-10 psi) or gravity. On another note, I’ve started converting my cold side tubing to EVA Barrier and DuoTight and I’ve noticed you have this in your brewery too. I’d be interested in seeing what you’ve come up with for connecting that stuff to typical accessories like bottling tools (counter pressure unit at MoreBeer -specifically), picnic taps, and even BouncerMD. BouncerMD comes with two different size sets of barbed fitting but nothing that would mesh well (ha, get it? mesh. filter. -eh well 🥸) with EVA Barrier. (Trying to standardize on 8mm OD). Sorry for the long post. Maybe a video idea?
Just ordered the Mac Daddy version plus extra filters after watching this video. We had an old off brand filter that got jammed so looking forward to the official bouncer version. Sadly our current ferm chamber doesn't have room to attach the TC pro version directly to the racking arm but looks like the Mac Daddy will do just fine. Contrary to perceived wisdom it does not affect aroma or taste as I have split batch tested just that to check.

Kinda hard to do on this fermenter. The dip tube is really large. They would be hard to find a tube that was flexible enough to float to the top and not kink because of the size. This is a good idea though like the fermzilla.. 👍🍻
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers Yes the fermentasaurus / fermzilla floating dip tube is quite narrow and could kink when working top down rather than top up.
@@duncanbayne3078 yes and the dip tube on the Spike flex is 1/2".
Great review Brian! Always love watching your detailed videos. Keep it up 👍🏻
Thanks!! 👍🍻
Nothing to do with beer, but what game cabinet do you have in the background?
One I built myself. Has several 1000 games on it. Uses the X Arcade controller. With a windows PC. I designed and built the marquee myself as well. 👍🍻
I’ve got this one and it’s been great. Thinking about adding a Mac daddy as a secondary to save money.
Nice let me know how it goes! 👍🍻
Awesome video's and very helpful.
Thanks! 👍🍻
Great one. Once it’s available again in my local store it will be ordered. Guess if you take the finest mash you actually get the yeast out too prior to force carb.
It probably will let a little pass through. But would capture quite a bit. 👍🍻
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers good to know. Reason I’m asking is that I don’t keg but hate sediment. My plan is to buy one keg to force carb to the bottle with an iTab. The filter will be key to the setup I think.
You want a little yeast to make it through to carbonate your beer. 👍🍻
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers yes. But ideally not an inch of the bottom of each bottle lol. I don’t want yo explain to stand the bottles not to shake etc. It should be as drinkable as a commercial beer.
Lol yeah that's a bit much! Even with the white filter (finest) there would be enough yeast getting through to carbonate just fine. 👍🍻
Excellant! I’ve been lookin at these. Thanks for the review.
Definitely!! 👍🍻
I have a small inline bouncer I use for my transfers, been super happy with it, and no to minimal issue with it getting clogged if you crash it before and go slow to start.
Quick question for you Brian:
The last part about the pump on the inlet side of the filter; I get where you are coming from, but what about particles getting stuck in the pump itself and clogging that up? This has been a debate of mine for a while and something I think about every time I transfer. Thoughts?
Thanks as always. Videos are great.
I think you could go with the coarse mesh, just keep a close eye on it.
I think it’s bloody awesome that you reply to all comments... (all 30,000)🥰😎
Haha! Thanks it's a chore sometimes but I enjoy it! 👍🍻
Not filtering yet, but am filter curious.
Lol welcome to the filter world!!
Search this on Amazon.
3/4" Female NPT in-Line Strainer with mounting tab and 50 mesh Stainless Steel Screen”
Works the same. But is a fraction of the cost.
Ok thanks!
Glimpsing that tri clamp riptide
Haha coming soon! 👍🍻
Again!, why in the F are there two thumbs down on this video?! I don’t get it!.. anyway, great video Brian! Keep them coming!
Haha!! Thanks man!! 👍🍻
Did that review get an F....?? 🤣🤣🤣🤣🥰😎
Lol
I tried a cheaper filter with wine . This looks better and filters are reusable!
Yeah these filters really aren't polishing filters they're just more sediment filters if that's what you're looking for then it'll work.
Muito bom Portugal
Cheers!! 👍🍻
Dislike the $$$ of the pro. I do have the baby brother of this one. I also use the blue filter screen thought about getting the finer mesh one.
Thanks for the comments! 👍🍻
I honestly don't think this is worth the cost and trouble. Dry hopping while pressure fermenting seems like a retarded futile effort, and a poor excuse to buy this product. Seems like a very niche use case.
Appreciate the feedback. It's not for everyone that's for sure. 👍🍻
@@ShortCircuitedBrewers Nothing against you, I do enjoy your videos. I just think 95%+ of homebrewers wouldn't get much use out of this. I don't pressure ferment and always dry hop in a mesh bag, then cold crash before kegging.
No offense taken. 👍🍻
Nice review, but it doesn't look like you got much hop particulates through the filter due to cold crashing, so not sure how much of a benefit it is.
There were some big chunks in there. I think I could have used the blue filter and captured some finer particles.👍🍻
