I once heard a farmer say : "That which doesn't kill you will make you stronger is a lie. That which doesn't kill you will make you hate it and you will work your ass off to never be in that situation again. Which is why, on my fence that now is around my pasture has 5000 VOLTS ON EVERY SINGLE WIRE! " That dude was on a journey.
For a video about pithy quotes, it has one of the most quotable quotes I've heard in a while: "I kind of feel like my whole adult life has been a series of circumstances that force me to reckon seriously with stuff I once easily dismissed." Put that on a pillow.
I've found that I'm a much happier and less resentful person after learning to not disdain things I don't necessarily care for or experience. If it makes other people happy and it isn't harmful, I see no reason to act as if distancing myself from it makes me superior or more enlightened.
And I had to understand that all the high school kids who always critized other peoples' interests had no superior knowledge, taste or understand because even if their criticism was somewhat valid there was no other point in voicing that criticism then to create a sense of superiority and that it was okay to like the things I liked (feel less intimitated by other people and also less attacked when somebody voiced their opinion but also not to express senseless criticism myself - still learning)
And on the other side of that, don’t fear other’s disdain for the things that do like or that are meaningful to you. That’s been a hard lesson for me that I’m still struggling to live by.
EXCEPT when it comes to blind faith in G-d. people can be so quick to say "it's in G-d's hands" and stop trying to help themselves or others or worse...
Some relative of mine once said "Never give 100%, just in case you need to do an encore." It doesn't apply to everything, but it is definitely applicable to playing music with a brass instrument, which I think was all they were actually referring to. Nobody will notice if you're playing at 90%, but they will notice if you aren't playing at all because your lips are toast.
my math teacher has a poster in his room that says "if all it takes to motivate you is a pretty picture and a cute saying, you probably have the type of job robots are going to be doing soon"
Well, some of my favorite "motivational quotes" actually come from you, like "how you feel when you are at your sickest is not how you will always feel" (at least I think it counts as a motivational quote, right?). Also "the world may be broken but hope is not crazy". By the way, loving the 100 days videos, you're so "fucking majestic".
Good job running 9 miles! I accidentally ran 10 the other day. Was going for 4 but got lost. It took forever, but hey, I could actually do it! I used to not exercise at all, but have, like you, found that both my brain (including my mental health) is so much better for it. Nowadays, I find that running is one of the things that keeps me afloat in bad times. Turns out that exercise, especially cardio, is not just about the short term endorphins, but regular exercise actually changes your brain in permanent ways.
I felt the same way about motivational posters, and yet, I have this sign on my desk at work that says 'even the longest day must end' and it genuinely helps me to look at it on days that feel like they will never end.
In our current timekeeping system, the longest days are 25 hours, or 86 401 seconds if you live somewhere that doesn't observe daylight saving time. Since this is a finite duration, even the longest days must end.
As I've gotten older I too have found the need to occasionally eat the words of my younger self. This is both humbling yet refreshing. Its the reminder I often need to look more deeply into things I had once dismissed as simple as well as the giving me the enjoyment of looking up and discovering a horizon far away that I had never noticed before. Its the realization that I still have so much to learn.
A good thing to realise is that everything is connected. Writing isn’t just the physical aspect of typing on a keyboard. It’s daydreaming as you’re washing up, or seeing a dog shake itself off after getting wet and the motions reminding you a scene from a film. The same as photography is all about noticing.
I am DELIGHTED by this!!!! I'm a dancer, and I'm VERY passionate about people learning to erase the false line between their "selves" and their bodies. It's a wholly manufactured dichotomy, and I'm glad working out is working well for you 😄
since you're running now John, my favorite running quote: "your legs aren't giving out, your head is giving up" which may be more useful to competitive runners or also if you are having a hard time on mile two. it also applies if you replace legs with lungs. not sure if it counts as motivational but felt compelled to share
For three years now my desktop background has been a picture wth just text that says "Do Your Work. Don't Be Stupid." The only motivational quote I've ever needed.
I just learned to create my own motivation and do what I can for myself, thanks to you John and many of the comments of this video. Thank you all so much!
Honestly I perfectly understand the sentiment. Both on the deeper levels, but also specifically when it comes to motivational quotes. I still dislike sappy inspirational quotes, but I *do* have not one but two sheets of paper above my desk saying *YOU DID NOT WAKE UP TO BE MEDIOCRE* in bold letters. Sometimes it helps to remind ourselves of the obvious, I suppose
I used to be obese until about 5 years ago, and I first picked up a barbell a little over 3 years ago now. I only need two 'motivational' quotes to remind myself why I lift heavy weights in the gym: "Man cannot remake himself without suffering, for he is both the marble and the sculptor." ~Alexis Carrel “You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do.” ~Eleanor Roosevelt When I hit my goals of 600lb deadlift, 500lb squat, 350lb bench and body weight over head press I'm getting the latter quote along with a barbell tattooed across by upper back.
My favorite motivational quote is 'every accomplishment begins with the decision to try.' It's not cliche, it's factual & it's a good reminder of what trying can accomplish. I believe the quote was made by an Olympic swimmer
I had a dream two nights ago that I was babysitting an alligator while riding on those roller-scooter-board things from gym class while in a parade after church. I truly hope this never happens in real life.
"When I want to roll my eyes, I should probably be alive to the possibility that the object of my disdain is more complex than I'm imagining." - John Green
I had a similar experience with music! The more popular it was, the more I believed that I was sophisticated to dismiss it as trash music. Once I allowed myself to realize that this is not actually true, I learned to enjoy it, and by doing so made my life easier and happier. I realized that by rolling my eyes and talking distastefully about pop music I was just causing anguish to myself and others. I was suffering at parties and weddings because I bitterly hated the style and volume of the music playing, and shared my frustration and discomfort with whoever would sympathize. I loathed these kind of parties for this reason. At some point, I learned that there's nothing inherently wrong with simple, repetitive, electronic songs, and my life got better in some ways. I began enjoying the parties. I realized for the first time that I actually enjoy dancing to music. I became less angry. I realized that before I had been stubborn and cocky, and without good reason. Sometimes it can make a real difference to accept these supposed silly quotes and popular music and following celebrity lives, instead of fighting it for the wrong reasons.
Miriam Lylac Me too. I banned pop music from my life for about six months before finding myself subconsciously humming along to it in my car, and judging myself for it! I didn't start listening to more popular music again until I attended a live show of one of my favourite youtubers, Robertidk, where we listened to some alternative rock AND some of The Weeknd's music, and I realized that I was enjoying both. It reminded me of the concept of dialectics, I guess I forgot hat I can like more than one type of music.
I don't mind most genres of music but I know why I like some more than others. Originality and complexity are things I look for in music. Pop doesn't tend to be original or complex. There are exceptions and I do like some of the less complex music because it has a catchy tune but I can only listen to so much of it before it becomes repetitive and boring.
I think it's a bit of a stretch to jump from popular music being potentially good to obsessing over the lives of celebrities but you do you if you're enjoying yourself I'm not going to stop you.
I have three posters on my wall. One is John's "The Test" quote, which I've loved for years and have placed so it's the first thing I see every morning. I think I love it because it's not exactly motivational, and instead a reminder of the simultaneous shortness and longness of life and how much bigger our lives are than simply what we know and have experienced.
"The best way out is always through." That has got me through some weird shit, like exams, and long bike rides, and taking meds, and money issues, and dentist appointments, and the death of my childhood dog. And it's true, because time goes foward (as far as we know), so we have to move fowards. That doesn't mean always sticking to the same path, but continuing the journey. Another one that I love is from Martin Fierro and it more or less says "Opportunity is like iron, you have to strike it while it's hot". And that has led me to some incredible experiences that I've would've missed if I had taken to much time to think about it.
+Dave Green Is that your real name? If so, are you a long-time vlogbrothers viewer? Because in their older videos they used to pretend they had a third brother named Dave Green, haha! Unless I'm confused with something else
Laura No, it's not my real name. I've been a nerdfighter for about a year now and I just decided to name my account Dave Green to see if anyone would notice.
I have been increasingly inspired by your honesty on this channel, John. It has put me in a mental state of not feeling bothered by jumping on the treadmill to walk, or perhaps to lay out my yoga mat for stretching. I also keep repeating "Only 30 minutes a day will give you a better life" and it's had such a positive impact! Thirty minutes is definitely better than an hour a day, as sometimes I can't even afford that. Thirty minutes is definitely doable.
Me too! I hope Rosianna will one day make self-care bunny stuff for dftba.com-I want a poster of the bunny and perhaps a plushie because I just want ALL THE PLUSHIES right now. Also, I recognize your username from the P4A last year (I hope that's not too weird, because I know there were lots of people there). I hope you are well. :)
I've never really found any motivation in quotes; usually my motivation is internal. Personal experiences; helping family and friends; or just doing something for myself are the factors that usually drive me. However, as we get older and personal experiences change, so do our motivational factors. Maybe one day I'll be like you John and find motivation in those cliched quotes too. Excellent video!
Nuance and balance. It's all about that in life. Nuance and balance. Even as a 19 year old barely-out-of-the-crib dude I often find myself wondering about why I tend to have an initiate reaction to something, only to find later on that, indeed, a lot of things are far more complex than I first thought they were. Kind of fascinating if you ask me.
My favorite counter-intuitive motivational quote is "I want to hurt the most", which despite seemingly reinforcing self-harm is actually one of the most helpful pieces of advice I've ever been given. In the context of physical fitness, motivational quotes often encourage you to be the best or to get first place, but there's a problem: pain. You end up having to convince yourself that the pain is worth it. However, if you strive for pain in the first place, winning is your only option (besides self-harm, which is not the intent of the quote). It's no longer "it's worth it", it's "I'm accomplishing it".
I went through the same type of hate/love *journey* with pop/rock songs about romance. Used to be that I found them incredibly shallow, and full of platitudes about an idea that doesn't actually exist. Then I actually fell in love, and they started to make a deeper sort of sense.
Hmm, this got me on kindof an odd train of thought... I think one of the reasons people hang on to motivational quotes is that they often express an emotion or idea that we ourselves don't feel capable of articulating. Then when we are in a place where we understand the idea, the quotes/songs/soundbites make sense, and we repeat them, hoping to share our understanding with others. Unfortunately, if they don't already understand the concept, they may find the saying trite, false, or simply not worth thinking about. Long story short--I think this is one of the problems with political discourse in our country. Candidate A preaches a point from their podium, which galvanizes their constituents, and which the other side ridicules as banal, wrong-minded, whatever. Then Candidate B presents their side, and A and their supporters have a similar reaction. Until we can truly try to empathize with others' situations, we aren't going to understand their motivations, but instead will call them 'racist,' 'socialist,' or whatever other title is our narrow-minded view of why they act the way they do. tl;dr - Walk a mile or two in each others' moccasins. Then instead of dismissing what they're saying, it'll resonate with you, too.
This video brought so much joy to my face. Yes all these quotes are so cliché and yet I find myself reading through volumes of them trying to find the most eloquent way of expressing myself instead of attempting to do it myself. Ironic?
Mostly due to the sociology course I'm taking, I find myself skeptical of motivational quotes and such. In Barbara Ehrenreich's book "Bright-Sided" she talks about how the trend toward individual optimism can lead to people on the whole blaming individuals for not trying hard enough to succeed instead of questioning the deficits those individuals may face because of societal injustices. Of course, this is not to downplay those individuals that do find meaning in optimistic phrases and their successes, but I also worry about the kind of culture this rugged, individualism and optimism means for people who don't have the resources they need to reach that kind of success.
BLESS YOU JOHN. I, as a Disneyland Cast Member, hear so often "If you dream it - you can do it" and people claimed Walt said it. We have classes for work that include this quote and him saying it. Everytime I silently scream, "Walt never said that." As soon as you mentioned that quote, I cringed. And I'm so glad you mentioned that he never said it.
There are quite a few things John said in this video I disagree with, mainly regarding the quotes he said were not true. The quote about conquering ourselves instead of the mountain makes perfect sense to me, and I think it's quite brilliant. The ultimate goal of a mountain climber (I'm talking not only about people who climb physical mountains, but also metaphorically, referring to any kind of goal that implies a journey) is to conquer themselves. It just happens that climbing a physical mountain is just a much better way to conquer yourself, by overcoming your flaws and improving who you are, rather than something as ethereal as meditate. I'ts always better to have a goal you have to act uppon on the physical world, because by doing that you will be forced to direct your whole mindset towards that goal. And all the obstacles and challenges you will face, you will only be able to go pass them by conquering yourself on the inside, because all obstacles, ultimately, come from the inside, not the outside. Also, about things that are worth having coming easily, yes, they may come easy, but valuable things do not. A banana is worth having but it isn't valuable, because valuable things, physical or not, are, at least in part, valuable because they are hard to get, not only because of their own caracteristics. For example Ferraris are valuable objects because of their superior capabilities, but if having acces to one was easy, it wouldn't be as valuable. That car has a different value for a rich person than it has for regular people, and it has a different value for someone who worked realy hard to get it, than for someone who got it as a present from his rich parents. I'm not talking about the price, but how much it means to you, because value is personal. Yeah, a banana may be 50 cents, but it would mean the world to you if you were lost in the desert, instead of getting it easily from Wallmart. Also, and maybe more important, I very much doubt that an unremarkable life may be fullfilling and meaningfull. But that is because I don't think that the common parameters people use to determine whether something is remarkable are the right ones to use. I think that, whether something is remarkable or not, should be determined by what and how many things someone had to defeat about himself in order to get what he or she wants to get, not about the thing that the person got. The goal itself is not as important as how hard it is for you to attain it, and what things about yourself you have to overcome in order to get it, and how much you evolve in the process. For example getting to college may be easy for some people, most I would say (In USA at least) so that goal wouldn't be considered remarkable, that may not even be a considered a goal. But for some people that's extremely remarkable, because of all the things that they have to overcome just to get there. It's not about the goal, its about the person. And I think that wraps up pretty much all this comment. Whether something is valuable or not it depends on the person, because it will be harder or easier to get for different people, and what will make things easy or hard for you personally is within you. So that's why it's important to have a goal that is difficult for you to achieve, because then you will have to face your own demons, which is the only way to grow. And that's the right parameter to determine whether a life is remarkable or not, Did you ever stand up to your demons, fought them and walked victorius out of the ring?
- Running is nothing more than an ongoing debate between the part of your brain that wants to stop, and the part that wants to keep going. - Go as long as you can, and then take another step. - Your body can stand almost anything, it's your mind that you have to convince. - Your legs are not giving out. Your head is giving up. Keep going. - Physical strength will get you to the start line, but mental strength will push you to the finish line. - The real workout starts when you want to stop. - If you never try, you'll never know. - Sore? Tired? Out of breath? Sweaty? Good, it's working. - A year from now, you will thank yourself for starting today. - No matter how slow you go, you are still lapping everyone on the couch. - Some quit due to slow progress, never realizing that slow progress... is progress. I used all these quotes to keep me going when I did the Couch to 5K program :)
I’m well aware that you struggled in school, and that your outlook on life was once bleak, John. But I never expected you to have the same disrespect for literature as I once had. Seeing how far you’ve come, you truly are an inspiration for me.
9 miles! Way to go, John ! You're on your way to a Marathon! Seriously, though, when you cross the 7-8 mile mark ridiculous distances start to seem not just possible, but like a good idea. It's a thing.
Well my favourite quote is "well-read people are less likely to be evil", written by Lemony Snicket but that only motivates me to read more and to read non-fiction. I've always liked those pretty foiled prints that people have with quotes on them but I could never find one I liked. Until I found one that said "You can do it Bruce" from Matilda and I thought that's one I can relate to.
Brian Moya It's just an opinion. I'm sure there are evil dictators who read a lot. The way I see it, reading fiction helps you to understand others and their motivations and imagine others complexly, as John and Hank would say.
well... i just yesterday unintentionally called a person out for saying well what doesn't kill me makes me stronger, in reference to anxiety attacks and stress, which do indeed take a significant toll on your overall health and will kill you slowly more often than fast... Point being, this was on my mind the past couple of days, and this is the best way of explaining it. so thank you. I'm glad I'm not the only person who finds them horribly false and ridiculous but also somehow comforting and motivating...
*I'm so amazed after all these years John and Hank are still able to create original and entertaining videos.* Thanks to them for inspiring me to create my own videos. I just uploaded a highlights reel of my 2016 and would appreciate any feedback. DFTBA!!
Physical fitness (staying active and eating healthy) is a lifelong journey that is not only good for your body but also your mind and your spirit (if you believe in that sort of thing). I just recently started this "journey" and realized that it's just about taking care of yourself: something you have to do forever. So you might as well do a good job, forgive yourself for setbacks, and keep moving forward. I am unsurprised that Google's algorithms lead me to this video, given what I've been doing lately. Btw, Disney's "keep moving forward" quote is a solid one for a cardio mantra, at least.
:-) you say it like it's a joke but rest assured, you are. Also, excellent idea for a sign off- 'stay ready!'... instead of pumpkins and penguins or something...
What I keep hearing for everyone who studied this subject seriously for any length of time is that you don't need external motivation you just need to make the important things in your life into a routine that you will come to hate violating. I'm curious to see if this video gives me something new beyond that.
Any chance of posters of the Self Care Bunnies being for sale at DFTBA.com? Because I love Rosianna's bunnies and would love to have a print or two I could frame.
I born and grew up in Iraq and it was a big deal for a girl to have a walk outside by herself. but I did it and I was taking a walk every single day to school then to college then to work just never looked at any body.once in the summer break my mom was sitting in the front yard waiting for me to tell me your dad is in the living room get in form the other door coz you came late after 10pm I told her it is not me to hide or lie I was just walking and that is what makes my dad happy and I got in to the living room and told him I came late coz I liked the breeze he said good for you. you are just like me I love to walk a lot and it is OK to come after the sunset coz lights and the trust I gave you and everyone has to try taking a walk all day long all the time just to see what time is your own body can make it better.
and I escaped running from the kidnapping twice for no reason when I was 6 years old and when I was 30 years old then I came to the United States coz it is very healthy to live doing what you love to do
But I would write 100 days And I would write 100 more Just to be the man who *writes a thousand pages To fall down at your door Edit: I stand corrected. haha, did not know 1000 only had one reading. I forget colloquialism knows no rules.
Oh my god someone said it! I have kind of always hated motivational quotes, but mostly because they plaster the walls of every therapist and social workers office. Like when I am trying to unpack my depression and anxiety I don't want to read "only the hardest pressure makes the most beautiful diamonds". Like shut the hell up poster, I will gladly stay a normal lump of coal if it meant that I could get through a week without a panic attack.
My English teacher has a bunch of random motivational quotes in the classroom that just don't make sense. My favorite one is "Life is like TETRIS, we all know how it works: you fit in, you disappear." Another good one is "You can be on the right track, but if you don't move, you get run over". They're both written by Anonymous, which implies that she's either an anarchist or that she wrote the quotes. I think the former makes the most sense because she has demonstrated that she knows not to end a sentence with a preposition.
Ever since Nathan Zed did that video where he talks about how much some vloggers are always jumping from side to side, I cannot unsee how much John jumps from side to side
CS Art I do believe this is a tribute/holdover from the creator Ze Frank by early youtubers like Hank and John, and now it's made its way into the overall vlog style.
My favorite quote that keeps me going: "To learn is to suffer. For even in sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart until, in our despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful graces of the gods." It's one translation of a quote in Agamemnon. I don't really believe in God or the gods, but I think the sentiment is true and I find it helpful.
I love a good affirmation to start my day. My affirmation for the week is "Just go with it" because I've been struggling with an existential "What's the point in it all?" lately.
As someone with low motivation, motivation is overrated. You need discipline and habit. Start with small steps, do work in regular intervals, accumulate small victories and gradually increase difficulty over time.
Honestly, motivational quotes don't get me to do anything, but they keep me going whenever I do something, it's like a little cheer in the background. You don't need motivation to get started, one day your fear of failure and rejection will be overshadowed by your fear of not trying anything at all. Remember that you're gonna turn 90 in the future and look back on your life so try not to do anything that elder you will regret, bc regret hurts more than anything when you're about to die. You don't even have to dream big, simply strive to lead a healthy life and rock a healthy mind. PMA
“Fine works have never been achieved easily nor without the exercise of constant critical judgement.” (Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston) This is one of my favorite quotes. I look at it whenever I doubt my drawing ability.
_Motivation_, broadly speaking, operates on the erroneous assumption that a particular mental or emotional state is necessary to complete a task. _Discipline_, by contrast, separates outwards functioning from moods and feelings and thereby ironically circumvents the problem by consistently improving them. As stupid as it sounds even to me, maybe sometimes one just has to put it on their calendar/schedule and stop thinking until the task is done. Like brushing your teeth - that mostly becomes a thoughtless habit. :D
tbh i love motivational quotes, i need them. my fav is: "If you hear a voice within you say 'you cannot paint,' then by all means paint, and that voice will be silenced." - Vincent Van Gogh
I just want to say... Thank you so much for subtitling your videos. I know very well how much work that is, but it makes such an enormous difference and it does not go unappreciated.
3 videos in a row that I have watched of yours had topics that have been on my mind. It was like you two were speaking thru my screen directly to me. "Is college worth it?", "what should I do with my life?", and this one about working out.
i am generally a very much not-fan of motivational quotes (she said, lacking the motivation to fix that horrible grammar), but there is one that i really love. perhaps not meant to be a motivational quote, but it certainly motivates me: "i hope that you live a life you are proud of. if you find that you're not, I hope you find the strength to start all over again."
And thank you John for making me genuinely smile by replying to my comment :) Okay my smile just disappeared because I am listening to Les Mis and Gavroche just died. At least the sunset is really pretty.
I'm so confused, is 100 days actually happening currently? I thought it had been previously recorded but I guess I was wrong? I enjoy watching it though, it inspires me to work-out more! Also self-care bunny is much appreciated, thanks Rosianna :)
JustMe Pretty sure they started it before January 1st but are still in the process of it. If they actually started at the beginning of the year then their editors should be congratulated for their incredible turnaround.
We started before January 1st, so we'd have time to edit the videos and make them look good and everything, but we're still in the thick of it. I don't even know what day I'm on. (Also, I will probably continue after 100 days is over, so.) -John
Thanks for your reply! It makes sense. Good luck today!! - Hopefully Chris is feeling better and no rockclimbing on the planning. Also I am very excited for vidcon in Amsterdam, if you keep this up you'll be running around the place without breaking a sweat! I would be up for a run at the vondelpark but I think I'd have to bring my bike to keep up with you ;)
Although I have always been fairly against the idea of working out for fun and I didn't make any kind of new years resolution to get fit. In an attempt to gain a bit of strength (after being quite ill) and help me sleep I did start yoga and have so far managed to keep up with a practice a day. I have found great motivation in actually managing to stick to something for this long (even with such a light exercise) and have now joined my local gym and have gone simply for the fun of it a couple of times. I think the key to motivation for me is to constantly feel like you're succeeding!
SidV101 I saw that, but I didn't expect it to stop altogether. "Posts" are super easy to turn off and maybe they would even do this week in vlogbrothers history? I'd watch 17 videos in a row
I have recently been finding the same thing with working out. I am a self-employed Website designer. So self-motivation is constantly in need. A little over 3 months ago I started swimming every day for an hour. Taking care of my physical needs has greatly stimulated my productivity in every other aspect of my life. Swimming also gives time to think and reflect, while also falling into a rhythm and being meditative. Are you working on a new book?
This is the second (at least) time tuatara have been mentioned. Maybe I'm hyper sensitive because I study their ancestors.... I do this is new book related.
Ever since I started running and exercising multiple times a week I've found that I'm not only happier than I've ever been before but I'm also more motivated. I figure, if someone like me who couldn't even run for 15 minutes without collapsing and who can now run 10k with a smile on my face, then I can do anything.
I find riding the elliptical (crossramp) to be one of the best places to come up with writing ideas. The tricky bit is remembering the phrasing long enough to get home and write it down.
MakeMeThinkAgain If you take something to record audio (or video) with you, you can speak your phrases while on the elliptical to remember for later. I've never actually been proactive enough to do this myself but I know people who do. :)
The thing about motivational quotes is that, as someone who's nowhere near where I want to be in life, I often find them incredibly insulting. In playing up the role of character in success, they often end up saying or implying that those who fail are thus necessarily of poor character. But a lot of success is about luck. The luck of not suffering from crippling chronic depression, for example. That bit about staying ready, though it's cheesy, has the advantage over many others of actually being true. A sustained state of preparation is often possible and it's not a bad idea if you need to be ready quickly.
" That dude was on a journey.
extremely underrated 5 year old comment
For a video about pithy quotes, it has one of the most quotable quotes I've heard in a while: "I kind of feel like my whole adult life has been a series of circumstances that force me to reckon seriously with stuff I once easily dismissed." Put that on a pillow.

who puts quotes on a pillow?

That's quite a large pillow.
I mean I'd like some nice quotes on pillows. Nice canvas for an image and useful as well.
I've found that I'm a much happier and less resentful person after learning to not disdain things I don't necessarily care for or experience. If it makes other people happy and it isn't harmful, I see no reason to act as if distancing myself from it makes me superior or more enlightened.
Thanks you taught me this very important lesson today!
And I had to understand that all the high school kids who always critized other peoples' interests had no superior knowledge, taste or understand because even if their criticism was somewhat valid there was no other point in voicing that criticism then to create a sense of superiority and that it was okay to like the things I liked (feel less intimitated by other people and also less attacked when somebody voiced their opinion but also not to express senseless criticism myself - still learning)
exactly
And on the other side of that, don’t fear other’s disdain for the things that do like or that are meaningful to you. That’s been a hard lesson for me that I’m still struggling to live by.

My favorite quote and the reason I hate every other quote.
Good one
my math teacher has a poster in his room that says "if all it takes to motivate you is a pretty picture and a cute saying, you probably have the type of job robots are going to be doing soon"

Always a good sign when you can run 10 miles by accident! -John
running=mental health for me
bad running shoes= knee replacements when i turned 55
invest in the best running shoes you can afford
I felt the same way about motivational posters, and yet, I have this sign on my desk at work that says 'even the longest day must end' and it genuinely helps me to look at it on days that feel like they will never end.
In our current timekeeping system, the longest days are 25 hours, or 86 401 seconds if you live somewhere that doesn't observe daylight saving time. Since this is a finite duration, even the longest days must end.
While we're on the subject of quotes:

Damn, even this quote is complicated.

Oh my god, that sounds like the best essay ever
Do you remember how that essay turned out?
Have you finished it yet?
As I've gotten older I too have found the need to occasionally eat the words of my younger self. This is both humbling yet refreshing. Its the reminder I often need to look more deeply into things I had once dismissed as simple as well as the giving me the enjoyment of looking up and discovering a horizon far away that I had never noticed before. Its the realization that I still have so much to learn.
are you 30?
(just curious of the age demographic, no disrespect)
Thanks John, we don't always agree on certain things but I always enjoying coming to your channel for new perspectives, thank you for that.

Don't Be Stupid."
The only motivational quote I've ever needed.

Sometimes it helps to remind ourselves of the obvious, I suppose

i love this actually kinda wanna have a quote for a quote on my wall "sometimes it helps to remind ourselves of the obvious"
I used to be obese until about 5 years ago, and I first picked up a barbell a little over 3 years ago now. I only need two 'motivational' quotes to remind myself why I lift heavy weights in the gym:
"Man cannot remake himself without suffering, for he is both the marble and the sculptor."
~Alexis Carrel
“You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself, 'I have lived through this horror. I can take the next thing that comes along.' You must do the thing you think you cannot do.”
~Eleanor Roosevelt
When I hit my goals of 600lb deadlift, 500lb squat, 350lb bench and body weight over head press I'm getting the latter quote along with a barbell tattooed across by upper back.
"People keep misquoting me on the internet!" Albert Einstein
Miriam Lylac
Me too.

Am I the only one too distracted by John's uneven collar to actually listen to him?
StorytimeFamily Yes, yes you are.
I never actually watch the video, I just open it and listen to the audio while doing something else.
StorytimeFamily Until you said that, yes.

Oh and good luck with the fitness thing, I look forward to seeing you in Amsterdam! 👍
Although, life is as complex as you make it. Think about that.
it's a wonderful channel if you can find comments about nuance on youtube
yess man!
refreshing to see other young people think about these kinds of concepts (=

Would someone mind explaining this to me? Is it a Dear Hank and John thing?
That quote is misleading
*I'm so amazed after all these years John and Hank are still able to create original and entertaining videos.*
Thanks to them for inspiring me to create my own videos.
I'm on a friggin journey.
shall now be my favourite motivational quote...

Also, excellent idea for a sign off- 'stay ready!'... instead of pumpkins and penguins or something...
What I keep hearing for everyone who studied this subject seriously for any length of time is that you don't need external motivation you just need to make the important things in your life into a routine that you will come to hate violating.
I'm curious to see if this video gives me something new beyond that.

and I escaped running from the kidnapping twice for no reason when I was 6 years old and when I was 30 years old then I came to the United States coz it is very healthy to live doing what you love to do

CS Art this has always bothered me haha
LostLeviathan Glad it's not just me! Hahaha
CS Art I do believe this is a tribute/holdover from the creator Ze Frank by early youtubers like Hank and John, and now it's made its way into the overall vlog style.
CS Art omg same😂
My favorite quote that keeps me going:
"To learn is to suffer. For even in sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart until, in our despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful graces of the gods."
It's one translation of a quote in Agamemnon. I don't really believe in God or the gods, but I think the sentiment is true and I find it helpful.
I love a good affirmation to start my day. My affirmation for the week is "Just go with it" because I've been struggling with an existential "What's the point in it all?" lately.
It doesn't help me run, but it helps me deal with the pointlessness.
I've got you covered. "The point of it all is to create a point of it all" - me
I fucking love this! "You don't have to get ready if you stay ready" it means nothing but it's so great!
As someone who has low motivation, I wish motivational quotes actually motivated me
As someone with low motivation, motivation is overrated.
PMA
“Fine works have never been achieved easily nor without the exercise of constant critical judgement.”
(Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston)
This is one of my favorite quotes. I look at it whenever I doubt my drawing ability.
Wow this really makes me wish I could find the motivation to start a fitness regime of any kind.
Kate H I turned on notifications for 100 days and it has peaked my motivation a bit!
You just need to grab your running shoes and refuse to look back. -John Faria
it may be hopeless but i'm trying anyway
Pick a time slot normally used for relaxing and just exercise. What I do at 6th form (high school) all the time

I just want to say... Thank you so much for subtitling your videos. I know very well how much work that is, but it makes such an enormous difference and it does not go unappreciated.
"I once had a dream that I was a tuatara."
You know, that makes a lot more sense now.
3 videos in a row that I have watched of yours had topics that have been on my mind. It was like you two were speaking thru my screen directly to me. "Is college worth it?", "what should I do with my life?", and this one about working out.

My new favorite motivational quote: "I'm on a friggin journey" - John Green
i am generally a very much not-fan of motivational quotes (she said, lacking the motivation to fix that horrible grammar), but there is one that i really love. perhaps not meant to be a motivational quote, but it certainly motivates me: "i hope that you live a life you are proud of. if you find that you're not, I hope you find the strength to start all over again."

I'm so confused, is 100 days actually happening currently? I thought it had been previously recorded but I guess I was wrong? I enjoy watching it though, it inspires me to work-out more! Also self-care bunny is much appreciated, thanks Rosianna :)
JustMe I've also been wondering that
JustMe Pretty sure they started it before January 1st but are still in the process of it.
On motivation: I have none, that is why I am on the youtubes, and not studying.
me
I just got an unskippable ad. I had been under the impression John and Hank didnt want those om their channel
I am enough?? Enough what??ANSWER ME BUNNY!
Remember, you don't have to get enough if you stay enough. Or, as Prince once said, don't stop 'til you get enough.
you are enough period
extrams0 You have no idea how much I want to make a menopause joke ^_^
I'm glad you're enjoying writing, John. That's all that matters.
where did today in vlogbrothers history go?
Daniel Mongan +
Yes, I miss it
Daniel Mongan every time they put one out, their subscription number would drop. Maybe they stopped because of that
SidV101 I saw that, but I didn't expect it to stop altogether. "Posts" are super easy to turn off and maybe they would even do this week in vlogbrothers history? I'd watch 17 videos in a row
Unfortunately being easy to do does not mean people know they can. Sadly, we must assume these people do not know about this functionality.
Are you working on a new book?
tuatara easter egg!!!
....close.... -John
This is the second (at least) time tuatara have been mentioned. Maybe I'm hyper sensitive because I study their ancestors....
I do this is new book related.
vlogbrothers tuatara and Sir Ed? Coming to NZ any time soon?
I don't think you're being hypersensitive. -John
Hi John
You are fantastic and I love that Chi Chi DeVayne quote right at the end.
"My whole adult life has been a series of circumstances that forced me to reckon seriously with stuff I once easily dismissed." Same.
Ever since I started running and exercising multiple times a week I've found that I'm not only happier than I've ever been before but I'm also more motivated. I figure, if someone like me who couldn't even run for 15 minutes without collapsing and who can now run 10k with a smile on my face, then I can do anything.
You spend most of your life looking for the adult you are. You spend the rest of your life looking at the child that you were. - Isaac Brock.
I feel that John is foreshadowing the publication of at least one self-help book with this video...
Oscar Fellows That'd be fun.
I'm loving the Liverpool FC scarf in the background!
The Puff has been replaced by The Forehead
Favourite motivational quote, it may lack punctuation, but it's still good. 'Better drowned than duffers If not duffers won't drown'
I hope someday you (John or Hank) will start by saying "Good morning, friends!" or "Good morning, Nerdfighteria!"
"If you can dream it, you can do it." -- the now defunct Epcot attraction Horizons
Did they get rid of Horizons? Man, I haven't been to Epcot in a LONG TIME. -John
Boy, you aren't kidding. Horizons closed in 1999!
