I had 10 drawers of make up . I am now down to 1 drawer and I don’t count the items .
I did a no buy for a 2 years . Most items were similar shades . It takes a very long time to use up products .So now I just buy replacements.. I don’t want to spend money on 10 items that are almost all identical and I don’t finish any .
I try to research items .
Go to Sephora and play with it ... ask for a sample if possible and then purchase it.
My bank account is bigger ... my room is cleaner... i get ready soooo much faster I gave away items that I did not really use to friends and family .... the brand new items I gave to a shelter .

Very nice! I have an alex9 (like everyone else ) and currently have them all full with overflow. Although 2 are skincare. I’d like to get to 4 drawers of makeup, with no overflow. One drawer has an identity crisis and one is pretty empty - maybe 1/3 full, so I’m hoping it won’t be too bad. Starting things off with a minimum 6m no buy makeup rehab.
I’d also either like to find a home or use up most of my samples.

Same here! I don't want to keep buying the same compact when I feel that my original compact is so sturdy and pretty to throw away. BTW I'm thinking of the limited edition metallic and metal Becca compacts. Like why cant they come up with refillable pans and I can keep the current compact forever and ever? I mean it's made of metal and durable plastic.

A project idea, 31 days of lipstick - a month where you wear one each day. Which ones do you pick first? Which ones do you reserve for a special day? What are the dregs that you ended up with at the end of the month? I’d be very interested in how this shook out :)

I counted my make-up and skincare collection on januar y 1st and all together I have 85 items. I still think that's too much, mainly because I'm really into minimalism and lowering my waste. As every project of yours has done, I hope this one too inspires me to be more mindful and own fewer nicer things.

1000's and I am OK with that. I have never bought make up or anything else on credit card, everything I have bought has been part of my budget. I have always been budgeting. If I don't have the funds I cannot afford it, simple as that. I am aiming for less stuff this year and using up and decluttering as I go. Haven't bought any new skincare this past year, only using up what I have! Makeup is harder to use up but I will make sure to find my true loves and declutter the not so loved stuff to better homes. Sending you healing vibes and good health so you can take extra good care of you Hannah 💕

I have 67 single eye shadows; 7 eyeliners; 5 mascaras; 4 lip liners; 23 lipsticks/glosses; 6 face powders; 3 bronzers; 3 blushes; 3 concealers; 5 foundations; 4 primers; 2 brow products; 3 finishing sprays; 8 related tools and drumroll please, I was stunned.....I have 41 brushes = 184 items. I’ve done a makeup inventory for quite a few years now, but I do individual counts of everything. So if I have an eyeshadow palette with 20 shadows, that’s 20 items. I do that so if I use up an eyeshadow in the palette I “get credit” for that use. I don’t have my tools counted, but I have 1260 makeup items, which is a ton. I’ve been on a makeup no buy for 15 months and it’s still that high, which is really telling for me

  • @pixi78
    @pixi78 5 ปีที่แล้ว +65

If this was my project I would have decluttered the eyelashes in today’s video and only counted/included the ones I kept, otherwise I’d be deliberately inflating my numbers to give me more leeway at the end of the year. I wouldn’t count the Kjaer Weis blush containers unless they had a product in them. You can’t “use” an empty product, so why count it? This isn’t a criticism, this is just MY thoughts on how I would handle a year or less stuff. 😊

    • @pixi78
      @pixi78 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I just counted all my makeup items including brushes, sponges, all my makeup, nail polish etc and I have 58 items. I’m a minimalist and don’t have a large collection at all. I’d like to get it below 50 and can easily do that this year.

@TearsOfLys whilst I REALLY love makeup, I choose to be very selective in what I buy. I’m very conscious of the time it takes to use a foundation, lipstick, eyeshadow etc. So I try to only have what I can use. I feel like this for everything in my life. @@pixi78 I also really love make up, but I came to realise that what I love most about make up is the process of putting it on, rather than make up products in themselves. Based on that I realized that I have more than enough to be satisfied, make up wise, and decided to not purchase make up anymore, unless it's to replace something that I use regularly. Your approach it's really mindful and I would like to compliment you on that. I am a little embarrassed to say that the only two "colour" make up products that I managed to really use up were two bronzer from Nyx and it took me two years each. So, yeah, make up takes a long time to be used up and I don't think a lot of people (me included) really ponder on that. Thank you, sometimes it's hard to think about make up in such a "logical" way, but I'm glad I got to reflect on this side of things.

I like listening about makeup, so I enjoy your videos ;) And am trying a No Buy myself. For now it's 3 months and it's mostly about clothes, makeup, skincare & bodycare and books. Makeup/skincare only is:
    36 items I use daily
47 items that are in rotation
    50 lip products
126 single eyeshadows (includes cream and eyeliner but mostly Sydney Grace and could argue 93 as I buy her bundles which are palette equivalents. Alternatively if you split all my palettes up to each individual shadow, 419 individual items)
    35 palettes
41 items I have almost used up and will not repurchase
    5 zpalettes
    32 brushes
I have an ongoing spreadsheet that tracks each individual item, when purchased, where from, brand, used for, oz, $/oz, retail cost, what I paid, reason for reduced price and total savings. Additionally, I ultimately use this same information to track what I use and what I gift. This tracking has helped me understand where I am spending money and what I buy the most. Also, allows me to track favorites and has prevented me from buying duplicate pretty things or things that I forgot why I passed them along. On average I save 30% off of retail.
My mindful project this year is I did a prediction of what I think I will use up this year. An agressive goal of using up @287 items. Also for budget purposes, I made a list of things I plan to replace or new releases I am allowing myself and, based on purchase cycle, when I anticipate the purchase in 2020. I will be interested to see how accurate I am.

For the people saying the blush compacts should count like the magnetic eyeshadow palettes, I disagree. They don’t serve the same purpose. Eyeshadow palettes can hold anything magnetic, and usually several items. The blush compacts she has are made for that one specific product only. You can’t rotate just any item through them, they are meant to be reusable for that specific product. The way I see it, the blush replacement pans wouldn’t be taking the place of any another item-they ARE the item the compact was made for so they are just “completing” the item. Hope that makes sense. I do think the blush pan should still count against the budget obviously tho.

I'm glad I found your channel right around the time I started regularly acquiring skincare and makeup (which for me, I admit, is very much tied to anxiety over aging). Current total count is 275 (though I'm not sure about your miscellaneous category, so I just estimated 20) , including travel sizes and minis. I think I use up maybe 10% per year, so I might make a goal next year of acquiring no more than 10% or roughly 25 items per year. This year I'm on a low-buy and I'm trying to use up/declutter as much as possible. Thanks for the motivation and insights!

My 2¢ on the Kier Weis question: I am a Dr. Bronner’s devotee, I’ve been using the lavender liquid soap as my body wash of choice for something like ten years. Our local natural foods co-op has big huge buckets of Dr. Bronner’s with pumps on them, and you’re encouraged to use up your bottle of soap, wash it out, bring it back & refill it from the buckets to reduce waste. When I do that, it doesn’t feel anything like when I buy a new body scrub or add a chelating shampoo to my shower rack - it doesn’t feel like adding a new item, because it’s my same Dr. Bronner’s in the same bottle.
Even if I were to switch up the scents, or if the good Soap Doctor were to come up with some new “formulas” or something, that might feel more “new” but I would still never count the bottle as an existing item and the soap inside it as a second thing.
So, obviously, I fall solidly on the side of “refilling the container does not count as an additional item.”

I'm so inspired by this project! I've decided to join in and do a year of less stuff myself, but instead of categories I'm just doing everything that isn't food/beverage. My problem is I think EVERYTHING is sentimental, and it's not. Just because I've owned an item for 5 years doesn't mean I have to keep owning it. This project is already helping me declutter and rethink bringing things in. Thank you so much for the inspiration! (I decided not to take a count at the beginning because oh my gosh counting everything I own would be insane, and just do the tally sheets. So far I'm at 14 out, 6 in!)

The Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood flawless filter is my absolute favorite glowy base product. I use it under my foundation, as a highlighter, on no foundation days, and for wearable glossy lids. It's got absolutely zero shimmer or glitter in it, it just looks so natural yet very glowy. It's cosmetically elegant imo

So for the blush compacts, I think the question to me is if you count your single eyeshadows as separate items and the reusable palette as an item then I would count the cream blush pans as adding items. If you counted single eyeshadows filling a palette as one item then I would count the blush pan and palette as one for consistency. Just my two cents

I agree with you on the refillable compacts: buying refills (for me) would not add to your overall number of things. You cannot use the compacts without refilling them, and you’re not counting the packaging and product separately for any other items. I think that, in the spirit of the rules, the refills and compact count as one item.

I agree with you about the stuff number not going up if you refill the kjaer Weiss blush compacts. It takes up the same space with or without products. If you bought a new product from her, like the foundation, are you adding 2 things or 1? I’d say 1. It would be the same if you bought a Nars foundation. You wouldn’t call the package an item and the liquid an item. At least, that’s how I would think about it...

I think you could look at the blush packaging like a magnetic eyeshadow palette. You consider the palette one item, and each individual shadow as 1 item. You wouldn't fill the magnetic palette and consider it 1 item, you've counted it all separately. To me, this would be no different.

  • @SimplySchaun
    @SimplySchaun 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

To me it seems like adding a blush to the compact should up your overall number by one. I partly believe this because you have considered your magnetic palettes as an item. I’m assuming that if you buy a single eyeshadow, and place it in a magnetic palette, your number would increase by one (whether the palette was already in use or not). So using that logic, I think adding a blush to a compact you have should do the same. This is what would make sense to me, however, I can understand your perspective as well.

Love this video! I currently have 217 makeup items. I think this is a reasonable amount for someone who wears makeup regularly, but I honestly only wear makeup 3-5 times a month... but I’m also a fan of purchasing single shadows like you are, so 53 of those items are single shadows. If I wanted to, I could just say that I have 2 palettes instead of 53 single eyeshadows, but I agree with the way you view singles and I want to be honest with myself. However, I do use my singles over any other paletteI own, so I don’t think I could really get that number down any lower than 40 by the end of the year. I also included nail polishes with my makeup, but I use those regularly and I have 18. Ideally, I would keep that number at 12 (one color for each month/ 3 per season). Hopefully by the end of the year, I can somehow manage to have my total number be at 175, but I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!

My number is a whooping 582 items! (Without brushes, I didn't count those) and it does seem INSANE!! That's the number with which I'm entering my no-buy year. And you want to know what's even more insane?? I don't want to part with any of it! I also did a declutter a few weeks ago, so the stuff in my collection are things I conciously decided to keep...
I'm so ready for this journey and this year's lessons!!
As for the refillable blush compact if you get the refill I would count it as one, because that's another "perishable" item you will have to keep track of, to use up or pass it on before it expires, so the way I see it (and I do this with my own stuff as well) you would be adding 6-9-12 months worth of blush to your collection, not just "one item"

I did my inventory this year (also after decluttering) and my overall makeup count is 110. My goal this year is primarily to USE UP my stuff (both make up and everthing surrounding skin and haircare). I set up a budget for myself and also a maximum count for each category. For example i have 5 liquid foundations right now (questioning how this could happen regarding the fact i use foundation maybe twice a month and the dr. jart cicapair cream daily) and i think 2 foundations would be manageable so thats the max count im "allowed" to own. So i cant buy anything in this category until i used up at least 4 foundations.
also im focussing on 30 items (both make up and skin care) in my project pan and would like to see my makeup count under 100 at the end of the year without decluttering anything.
im excited for this year and to follow your project, as i did since your no buy year!

I've got about 65 items for makeup, beauty tools and skin care and I feel pretty good about it. I do count each pan in a palette as one item as I have a hard time giving the same weight to a single eye shadow as a giant eye shadow palette. Plus then my numbers don't get really weird when I depot something. I did opt not to count my reusable cotton rounds individually as if I had a bag of single use cotton rounds, I wouldn't go through the bother of counting them all out. lol

I’ve counted my makeup. After a two year spending spree and Birchbox subscription, I have many items but most are sample size. My goal this year is to use them up. My total number of makeup and tools is 263 items! The two most surprising numbers to me were eyeshadow palettes, 22 of them. I thought it was closer to 15. Which is hilarious because I use my cheek product as a crease shadow most days. Then brushes, I have 90. 90! By the end of this year I want to at least halve the 263, because that’s crazy-town

I don't have specific numbers right now but I know I have around 60 eye shadow palettes (including my singles collection), hundreds of lip products (it was 300+ but I recently did a large declutter and I don't know exactly how many I got rid of), 5 foundations, 12 primers, 10 face palettes, 35 blushes, bronzers, and highlighters, 5 setting sprays, 50-60 brushes, an absurd amount of super shock shadows (the last time I counted it was 81 but I've decluttered some since then), and probably another 50-100 other eye products like liners, pigments, cream/liquid shadows, mascaras, and brow products. I've been on a no buy since September, and it was originally going to be for one year, but honestly I can't really see myself adding to my collection (excluding replacements). I moved from Germany to Texas at the end of August, and most of the recycling programs here have stopped due to the trade war with China. Until I can find ways to recycle our waste, I'm very hesitant to add anything to our life.
In relation to the reusable blush compacts, I agree with your thinking. I've read many of the comments pointing out that you've counted magnetic palettes as an item therefore you should also count the compacts as an item. To me, this nearly "punishes", for lack of a better word, you for using reusable packaging and creating less waste. Magnetic palettes are a versatile tool that serves more of a purpose than to simply house a product. In my eyes, magnetic palettes are tools and the compacts are packaging, therefore, the compacts and a blush that you may choose to fill it with would make more sense as one item than two.
I hope you are starting to feel better! Have a great week, and I can't wait to watch your next video!

After years of not being able to buy, due to lack of money, I spent 3 years building up items I want to play with. I actually do tiny living so I must be mindful about further expansion. Hello Hannah,
I have been a long-time follower of yours. I am excited to make 2020 a year of no buys strongly motivated by you and your successes. I also decided to inventory my beautiful things because I was interested in my numbers as well and how they will hopefully decrease. I have also been sickie and have only had time to categorize and count my makeup. My number was 192!! 😳 I was shocked with how high my number was. I have 5 pairs of lashes and I don’t even wear them. 43 lip products. And 17 glitter products including stila liquid eyeshadows and glitter liners. I have almost 50makeup brushes! I only have 11 eyeshadow palettes and 6 single eyeshadows which I find still a bit excessive. I’m hoping to get my number down closer to 100 makeup products since I don’t think the individual person needs so many. I am excited to follow your project this year and work on my own. You are such a wonderful presence in this community and so inspiring. I hope you are finally feeling better. I can’t wait to count my skincare and clothing, though I don’t think I’ll have quite so many serums as you 🤣 have a great day! Angie

    Counted!
Makeup: 75 (including 20 single eyeshadows and 8(!) foundations)
    Tools: 51 (41 brushes)
I'm quite happy with that, only something needs to be done with the foundations overflow - I actually don't like wearing foundation, I do it mostly because of my insecurity. Though last few weeks I wa quite ok wearing only little powder foundation so we'll see how that goes.
Fingers crossed for your project this year, Hannah! I'm all about less stuff in general :)

I also kept track of stuff that enter and exit my life in 2019 and I have 84 new items and get rid of 170. You can call it a year of less stuff. I loved it. I loved the feeling of writing down what I've discarded. I'm not sure if it will be that gratifying to just add a point but you will see for yourself and it also prevented me from writing down the same item more than one time. My recommendation for you would be to consider what is +1/-1 item. If you buy a palette and it comes in outer cardboard packaging than is it two items or just one. For example in your box of lashes, there are lashes in packaging, empty boxes and other stuff. You can get rid of lashes with box and its minus one but if you get rid of just the box than its minus one. All I'm saying is that it will get tricky for you during the year of less stuff. It certainly was for me.
As for my makeup, I have one drawer of 121 stuffs :)
    72 brushes/accessories
    9 palettes
    9 singles
16 complexion: foundations, concealers, bronzers, etc.
    15 lip products
    11 eye and brow
    5 backups
I think that this project is not that hard so you and anyone who commits to it will succeed. Good luck!

I think that if you don’t declutter the lashes without replacing them, then it will feel like you added about 20 products rather than breaking even in the end. Wouldn’t it?
I wouldn’t consider it messing with the project if you were to stick to the spirit of it and not let them become extra items in. You decluttered before the project for a reason.

True! I think there are a lot of "non-precious" items that I missed before the new year (especially in the body care and clothing departments, which I didn't intensively declutter); but the purgatory box is also already filling up again and I'm also about to replace all of my bras, so there are already lots of things flowing in and out. I'm thinking more in high numbers (50's 100's) rather than the 10's and 20's that the lashes will represent, so I'm not too worried about it :) I like the hard start of the new year.

This was after a HUGE declutter/clean out that I thought went well until this most shocking thing of it all happened- the 92 tools I counted (WHAT!?!)
The next largest category for me was lip products at 47 (but I’m rounding that to 55 to account for the few that are likely floating around in bags and coat pockets). My makeup count with tools is 125. I would like to see that go down over the next year, similarly I need to declutter my brushes. How to "count" single eyeshadows when you're just buying than pans is so tricky! Even with palettes there's a mental difference in how you look at a 6 pan palette and a 30 pan palette even though they are both "one stuff." I'd probably count the blush holders like the magnetic eyeshadow palettes, if it had it's own SKU# it's a stuff.

16 lip products (with a few old nyx shades i should declutter bc theyre Old but i need to figure out which ones i've quarantined out are ready to leave)
    13 cheek products
    4 setting/finishing powders
1 powder foundation and 3-4 liquid foundations (one is a bb cream but i don't reach for it as a sunscreen because it's so full coverage and finicky)
5 concealers and 2 color correctors
    4 primers (one almost empty)
2 black liquid eyeliners (free gifts w/purchase)
    5 pencil eyeliners
3 brow pencils and 1 brow gel
5 mascaras and 2 lash primers (also free gifts w/purchase)
    9 eyeshadow singles
    5 cream shadow sticks
    2 liquid eyeshadows
7 palettes (one unopened and unused)
    2 eye primers
And then my backups box includes four lipsticks, two of those powders, one primer, one setting spray, three of the cream shadows, two mascaras, one palette (free gift w/purchase), one eyeliner, and one tool

Great video! I'm really interested to see how this year goes. To be honest, I kind of thought you were going to do a 'project pan'/ 'shop my stash' setup, rotating through a selected group of your least used products, as opposed to having less structure. But that's obviously just my point of view, I still really like this project and think it will work. Side note: I was also kind of surprised at how many eyeliners you have!
Since you asked, I have a small collection, but I still think it's a bit too much for me, bearing in mind I only wear makeup when I'm going somewhere nice or if I have time in the morning. Sometimes I'll do it for fun, but other than that I don't wear makeup at home. Anyway, I feel like I'm rambling, so here I go:
    Lip products: 9
    Brushes: 18
    Glitters + glue : 3
    Mascaras: 3
    Eyeliners: 3
    Palettes: 3
    Concealers : 4
Face powders (of any kind): 5
    Compact mirrors : 2
Of course I'm not a beauty influencer, so my collection is a fraction of yours, but I don't use it nearly enough to justify how much I have. I really need to use it a lot more.
I hope you feel better soon - I was ill a few weeks ago and A) peppermint tea + B) lemon, ginger and honey seemed to help. Looking forward to more videos!

I counted 44 makeup products and tools in my drawer half of which I don't use, some I use consciously to use up and say goodbye, some I am glad I have, some are unnecessary backups. My resolution is to get down to about 30 makeup items during this year. Skin/body/haircare is going well so far, I get my dopamine through using up existing products and not through getting more new exciting stuff. Although It's a little disturbing to use products I don't enjoy using any more just to use them up. otherwise, they would be a waste and I don't want that either.

Love the new thumbnail style! I counted and I have 225 makeup items 🙉
Out of all of your rules, I think the one that may end up being rethought at some point during the year is the rule that counts each single eyeshadows as one thing. I think your initial logic is sound, but I can also envisage you reaching a point where the “weight” of this category over the total tally becomes incongruent to the proportion of your “stuff” that single eyeshadows actually represent. And then you might end up reaching a position where a ruthless wardrobe declutter garners the same net shift in items as a ten minutes de-duplicating of some similar single eyeshadows. An alternative arrangement might be to count each single as 0.25 of a thing, for example.
Anywho, let’s wait and see how the year pans out to see if these concerns are actually real or not. If the focus remains on editing every part of your collection rather than becoming a pure numbers game, this probably won’t be an issue ☺️ And I get the sense that this year is not about creating an iron-clad set of rules that are free from wiggle room, but rather the focus is on cultivating a mindset and the rules themselves are kind of ancillary to that/a loose way to track your progress in achieving that mindset. I look forward to seeing more!

I see what you are saying! I think the weight of that category is already incongruent, it represents almost 40% of all of my makeup. Maybe at some point I'll estimate how many "regular" palettes the singles account for and switch to measuring that way.

I would love for you to review a bunch of stuff from Erin's faces?! I am thinking of trying the sunscreen and the enzyme peel 🍌 but I live in the UK and shipping is an issue so it would be cool if I could know more about their products xxx

Happy New Year Hannah! This video caused me to think. The rise in the popularity of Minimalism (not saying you are a minimalist) and concern for how our consumption is affecting our environments is causing people to take stock of their possessions, which I feel is a good thing. For me, minimalism isn't just about a number of things, its also about usage. If I have 200 items and I only use 50 then I'm being wasteful, but if I have 1000 items and I'm using all of them consistently then for me I'm not being wasteful. If when you do your tally at the end of 2020 you have 600 cosmetic items instead of 431 but you connect with all of the items and use them regularly would you consider the project a failure?

interesting! I think there must be a line somewhere past which you can't really use everything. And for me, I know I have a limited capacity not only to use but to super strongly value everything. I don't think I can keep much more makeup in my mind palace. Even if I loved it all, if I ended up with more eyeshadow I would know that I was lying to myself if I thought I would use it all regularly.

@@HannahLouisePoston Yes, I personally have an overabundance of things. I have thousands of dollars of cosmetics that I don't even wear. Most if it in it's original packaging. So I definitely can't take anymore. My goal this year is to see what I connect with and give the rest away. I mean how many brown eye shadows can you have? I think I get caught up in color and packaging. And of course hype, I get caught up in hype. As fun as social media is it is often just one giant ad. I've been getting better at recognizing when I want to buy something because the color is appealing knowing that I have no intention of wearing it.

21:08. I have the same lash container! I think it’s very pretty. I always thought I would display it but no, it sits in a drawer, useful though.😄
Edit: ‘House of Lashes’ if anyone is wondering...

I counted my makeup inventory today. In total I have 420. That does include a ton of samples of various sizes, most are 3ml. 89 are single shadows. I would really love to use up 50 by 2021. And I'm sure I'll declutter a bunch of the single shadows by the end of the year because they will be older than I am comfortable using. So if i could get the numbers down by 100 that would be awesome! I also separated my face palettes by their category instead of counting them as one thing.
