- Should you get your dog's ears cropped? Today we talk about all the pros and cons to ear cropping your dog. This video will discuss all the arguments on both sides of this issue in an attempt to help you decide for yourself whether getting your dog's ears cropped is the right choice or if you should go with a natural, floppy-eared Doberman. Either way is a great choice!
Please remember that ear cropping may not be legal or widely performed in your country, but this is a big world. In many countries (the United States included) Doberman ear cropping is an incredibly common procedure. Weird how just cropping a doberman's ears makes them look so much more intimidating.

yeah, i really wanted a doberman because of how intimidating it looks and i just think thats beautiful. call me dumb but i thought that some dobermans were just born with upright ears and im sad to hear its something you need to operate them to have. I live in a place where cropping is illegal (dont think i would do it anyway now that i know it can lead to harm). If someone knows of a breed similar in size and build to a doberman but which comes with naturally standing ears please respond to this comment. ive always loved big dogs, especially the "dangerous" looking ones with tall builds, short hair and upright ears.

Update on Ace - I have gotten him involved in playing some of the games th-cam.com/users/postUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU and I can see a difference in his confidence already! My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I am so grateful for coming upon your training techniques!
I'm in the UK where ear cropping and tail docking is illegal (with a couple of exceptions) and the dobes I've met over here are so expressive. Like all dogs, they use their ears and tails to communicate, and to show how they are feeling, and to take their ears and tails away from them is unnecessary and cruel, which is why it's been banned.
I rescued a cropped dog , and I can promise you that it doesn’t prevent them from using their ears to communicate. It’s a misconception. I don’t understand why people use the claim it takes away their ability to communicate with their ears when there’s even more breeds out there with drop ears so heavy they can’t move them (hounds and spaniels mostly) and sometimes these heavy drop ears also contribute to chronic ear infections (once again, hounds and spaniels namely). It just seems weird.
@@entitledbobcat It's a purely cosmetic surgery that you are preforming on an animal. How can you justify that in anyway? Putting an animal under anesthesia with opioids, alpha 2 agonist and local anaesthetic drugs to make him look more appealing for an instagram photo.

Our dog has un-cropped ears. She is very approachable when we take her in public. She likes to give people smiles. In return for treats, of coarse.
That's really awesome. I love the uncropped look too. They are just all around great looking dogs. Haha... I love that she's so social and approachable.
I am worried about ear infections. Have you had any negative reaction to natural ears?
@@jennshocrazy-busylife9488 No ear problems. If I think she has water in the ear I give it a rinse with a peroxide/alcohol mix to dry it out. That is what we used when I was doing a lot of SCUBA diving. Or you can get dedicated ear drops. She will let you know if her ear is bothering her.

There are breeds that were docked for fairly legitimate reasons. I suppose times have changed, but it’s what the dogs became expected to be.
It's cruel, there are no longer legitimate reasons to do it, if there ever were.
@@pbs36 Cruel is from our lens, not the dogs. The Doberman was bred and genetically modified for many years with a very specific goal in mind. Cropping its ears helped achieve that goal. Is that not legitimate enough? It’s a working animal, not a child.
I think the natural ears seems to make the dog more socially acceptable. A bug flew in my ear as a child ,so I think it's often a plus to have a bit more ear protection.
Great video. When I got my Doberman I was determined to get his ears cropped. I just absolutely love that look. After getting him I wavered a bit because of the unnecessary discomfort it may cause him and the maintenance. Also, other family members weren't that thrilled about it. None the less I made the appointment and headed up to the vet. The whole way there I had a strange feeling. I looked at my puppy and saw how incredibly young he was but more so how incredibly beautiful he was. About halfway to the vet I turned around and went home and never looked back.
I don't regret not getting them done at all. I don't have any judgments against people who have their dog's ears cropped, to each his own. As I said, I absolutely love the cropped look and I may even do it someday with a different dog. But I also love my Zeus just the way he is. He is so beautiful and such a great dog. I think he still looks amazing.

Woah I've honestly never seen a dobermen with uncropped ears. They looks softer and more natural. I always thought dobermen naturally looked like the way when they have cropped ears.

I’m Australia it’s illegal 👍🏼 I looooove my Dobes velvet ears and full c shaped tail. They communicate so much through both! Can’t imagine putting them through cosmetic surgery.
Dogs with cropped ears still communicate with them just fine! My rescue who had cropped ears has more expressive ears than my cocker spaniel (who has ears too heavy to move).

Doberman tails are very sensitive and can be injured or broken quite easily, and that is very painful for the dog, and then you have to do the surgery anyways.

I agree on the cosmetic surgery end of the conversation....i don't agree with cosmetic surgery for dog or man unless special circumstances (birth defects and injuries) not to change your appearance but for repair
I seriously can't make a decision. I love the look of cropped ears/tail but I'm also unwilling to submit my puppy into pain rollercoaster just for an "improved" appearance. I love my dog and wouldn't want anything bad to go during/after surgery. Damn.

People will be less likely to attack you and your dog if your dog's ears are cropped. Erect ears naturally insight fear into the human brain this is why the breed's creator did it. So you can say that this is better for your pup in the long run.

My big boy still has his ears and tail. He’s never had any trouble hearing, or issues with infections, or injuries on our hikes. He’s still plenty intimidating when he’s being standoffish, he is 110lbs after all lol.
In fact dogs with in tact ears can open and close the entrance usually better and with that protect the inside of the ear better. This means less chance on ear infection with ears in tact.
My dogs are natural also but the tail, the tail is a gift that never stops giving. Can knock an eye out with that, leaves bruises on our legs.
The old man in my neiborhood who was smoking since teen and never stop smorking till he die at the age of 87.

My Dobermann has floppy ears and still has his tail. He looks gorgeous except it hurts like hell when you accidentally get whacked by his wagging tail 😂

Same but it have a black lab mix named Taco and a curr pit mix i think named sundae and their tails hurt T^T I also have a mini pomeranian named Tink and she is old so she gets really happy when she "sees" me (she's half blind) it's more of when she hears me if she can hear me idk she she gets really happy witch leads her to jumping an inch of the ground then barking.
I have a 6 1/2 year old Doberman and her ears and tail are both normal (floppy and a full tail). I live in Australia but even if I lived somewhere that it was legal, I still wouldn’t have it done. She looks amazing the way she does. As for the “somebody may not recognise that it’s a Doberman without the cropped ears”, I honestly couldn’t care less. She’s part of my family, not a trophy that I parade around.
Yeah I love the natural look too... great looking dogs no matter what in my opinion. Yeah I wouldn't really care about the not getting recognized quickly as a Doberman thing at all EXCEPT for the benefits it has for protecting the family. Most people know a Doberman is not a dog to mess with.... but a hound is a different story. And around here, uncropped Dobies are so rare that most think they're a hound of some kind. I think if uncropped were more common around here (in the U.S.) that would change though.
“People not recognizing that it’s a Doberman without the cropped ears” just means that they're ignorant. I don't see why it would be a justifiable reason to crop your dog's ears just because some ignorant people can't tell what the breed is. It's actually a good opportunity to educate those people when they ask.
@Simone Vasquez That's part of the reason I don't want my dog's ears cropped when we get it (next year). I want people to come up to me and be interested in meeting my dog! Even more so now that I learned cropped ears limits the dog's expression capability!
I am not used to seeing them with natural ears and tails and found a picture of them on a video for the song Everything U Need by Overmono. You can find several pictures of the same dogs on the internet if you do a Google search. We had 4 European Doberman's some years back in South Africa. None of their ears were cropped and that look perfectly suited their wonderful and gentle nature. Intelligent and so loyal & loving. Almost human in how they interact with you. They were happy as long as one part of their body made contact with yours. Definitely my favourite animals and I so very much hope to be able to make a home for one or two in the future. Watching these video's makes me miss them very much!
That's because it's illegal in CIVILIZED countries.
the ritual of posting our dobie puppy’s ears helped with bonding & now our full grown puppy calms down right away when his ears are massaged and rubbed. He goes to his happy place and loves it.
I do like the look of cropped ears but I wouldn't do it. I didn't have my dane's ears done and wouldn't if I do end up with a dobie. I'm not fond of docking either unless there is a real reason not just tradition, standard or cosmetic. I won't judge others for doing it, it's just not something I am comfortable putting my own dogs through for looks.

@@susanneconway In the off chance it does, your vet can usually set it, just like you would a broken leg or you could dock the rail then, as you now have a medical reason to do so. But untill something goes wrong with the rail, why would you put your animal through the trauma of removing it?
Femke Wisman they are so young they won’t remember it, so definitely NOT trauma. It might hurt a little then, but now they don’t have to go through the (actual) trauma of breaking a tail later and remembering it. The tail docking helps you not have to pay for medical procedures, and not have to pay for broken furniture. Why wait until they break something to dock the tail? It’s just more money and more pain.
Maybe get an animal you don't have to mutilate just to save money later.
They look so much cuter with floppy ears. Unless it's for a health issue, why crop? Can you do cropped tails next? If I recall correctly, in one of your other video's you mentions how brittle the bones were and how easily they could break. While I love a dog with a long tail, and love it on rotties, if broken bones is such a huge issue for dobbies, I can see the reason to crop em.
Great idea for a video, thank you. I have it on my list of ideas for future videos! The good thing about tail docking also is that it's done when the dogs are just a few days old and is much easier for the dog than ear cropping.
There's no more reason for a dog to break its tail than break a leg. If you dont go and close doors on it you'll be totally fine. Whatever the breed is, cutting the tail is barbaric, often done poorly and painful. Just like the dehorning of veals ir declawing of cats or cropping of ears. It is un unnecessary process. Why cut the tail in fear that it will break when the chances of it are so so low? And if the dog breaks its tail? Have it removed! Even on adults it's an easy procedure with minor risks with the anesthesia considering the size of the adults.
There is absolutely no reason to get your dogs ears cropped. Ever. Would you slice off half of your child’s ear? Literally wtf is the point?
Annagrace MUA we didn’t crop our boxers ears but I think we should have. She is constantly scratching her ears and she’s already had at least one ear infection. We hope it’s just from allergies but we haven’t had her tested yet.

How much of an improvement to their hearing could it possibly be? It's like moving the couch an inch closer to the TV so I can hear it better.
When we got her I talked it over with my vet and after that I said not going to do it glad we left her ears alone she is just perfect !!!
As someone that works with a Doberman Rescue, i will say that dobermans with cropped ears get adopted out a lot faster than those without, by a landslide...so much faster. My personal dogs has cropped ears, and that was a requirement of the breeder, as all her pups must go out as American "breed standard".
Interesting... I didn't consider the factor of how easy it would be to re-home one with cropped vs. natural ears!
@@DobermanPlanet Its sad but a true fact, if you were to poll some other doberman rescue orgs you would probably hear the same. While what their ears look like don't have anything to do with their temperment, most will want the prototypical breed standard...beauty above function...I am not for or against cropping. I had mine cropped, but it believe it should be done by a vet that specializes in the process, and gives proper aftercare. There are many ways to make the ears stand that are easier than others..without sticky tape, glue etc that sometimes causes irritation...but i will say after your pup goes through the ear cropping process, there is pretty much nothing you can do to their ears that will casue any offence. where some dogs don't like their ears messed with mine loves it, and he loves the extra attention his tall ears get!

Why do people want a dog to go through surgery when it isn't necessay? And standards for dogs also cause some breeders to create dogs that can breathe or run properly, so it is better and more decent to let pups be instead of going for a look. You can choose your own look, but leave others or other creatures alone.

Thanks for presenting both sides on this as unbiased as possible. You made a really good point about the floppy ear making the breed look less intimidating, which would be a great benefit for service and therapy animals (but not so much for protection or "aversion" dogs).

I disagree my 4 dobermans doesnt have their ears cropped. They Bit both burglars arm and broke it .he was trying to stab my dog when he got in. Good thing i also have a shotgun so i shot him in the shoulder and knee. So i think
Being a protection dog trainer and and an avid hunter has its perks. Burglar lived though. No more crimes for him
If you want your dog to guard your house effectively, you should probably have it trained to do so. I'm pretty sure a floppy-eared dobie can learn to be a guard dog just as well as one with cropped ears. I doubt a burglar would be stupid enough to think that a barking, growling dog is less dangerous just because it has floppy ears. And even if said burglar truly is that idiotic, that's even better. They'll never see it comin'.

People crop ears and dock tails to make their dogs look more dangerous to intimidate other people - end of conversation.
Springer spaniels are so crazy they can thrash the end off their tail off against furniture - the end docking in breeds like that is the only non cosmetic surgery commonly performed on dogs.
All other surgery is to appeal to owners who want dogs that look assertive and threatening.
But isn't it better to have a Clark Kent type dog than a 'put the fear of god in you' dog? The way some people associate a guard dog sounds a bit worrisome.
While I am more of a fancier of bulldogs (pit bulls), my father used to own dobermans. They were mighty fine dogs. He would always get the ears cropped. While I can definitely see why some folks choose the more refined, harder cropped look, I tend to leave ears natural on dogs. I would never turn away a good dog with cropped ears, but I personally would not go out of my way to pay hundreds of dollars for cosmetic surgery for dogs. I would instead invest that money into their upkeep, plus I think they look good as is. Another reason is I think it can also be important that folks see dogs of a certain breed in their natural state. With bulldogs, there are plenty of popular examples of uncropped ears folks can look to. However, for breeds like dobermans, there are folks that would look at a full-blooded doberman and think it is a mongrel because the dog's ears are not cropped. That never set well with me.

I'm Australian and my Dobermans have always had natural ears. They still scare the crap out of intruders, and the fur on the ears is super soft!
The floppy ears are wonderful, cute and expressive etc. and yes floppy eared dobbies can be just as scary, its not all about the up ear look, it's their training, stance, gaze, loyalty etc. People still recognise them as dobermans too unless it's from a bad breeder..

Just to let you know floppy ears are UNNATURAL as they are a result of breeding, there are no floppy ears in nature, therefore cropping them turns them back to being more natural and it is also more healthy for the dog
We just got our doberman puppy this past weekend! We decided we are going to keep her ears natural.
In my personal opinion that’s a great choice. Why go through the unnecessary pain for a ridiculous surgery cost just to maintain breed “standards”. But people have the right to crop their dog’s ears, it’s their choice

Wow. I didn't know there was that much after care for cropped ears. But I do want to say I love the way you show both sides, very good reasons for and against cropping, and the way you talk about them with so much love for the dogs, your followers, and their families. I'm just so glad I found you before I get my Dobie. I will be a good owner. I am a serious animal lover, and my dogs are all properly taken care of, but Dobies are a obviously a breed very different from all others and I like to do my homework first. You rock 😊

I was tempted to crop my pitbulls ears.. I got him when he was 30 days old but after 3 months I guess I have came up to a point where I can't see him in any kind of pain or discomfort 😢 never gonna crop his ears ever I love how he tucks back his ears when he see me 😍
Well good thing... Pitbull ear cropping isn't the same thing as a Doberman crop is. They take off a lot more of the ear and it can lead to some hearing problems down the line.
My doberman's ears are cropped and she looks great, but I respect anyone who decides they don't want to.
I have a Cane corso cropped his ears and got a lot of hate for it, but he's beautiful and looks majestic and intimidating.

@Jeffy aww don't crop the ears. It's basically animal cruelty :( it can hurt the dog a lot and there is no reason to crop them. People only crop them for their needs, not the dogs.

I have worked in the veterinary profession for over 30 years and owned Dobermans for more than 20 years. We have never owned a Doberman with ear infections. Following your pros for cropping, Labradors should be one of the breeds to have their ears cropped, for I see so many with chronic ear infections and, being originally bred for hunting, this would prevent the injuries that could happen in the brush. We have had 2 Dobies that came with cropped ears, and 6 with natural ears, and have noticed the cropped ones have had dirtier ears (I clean the ears regularly with nail trimming) though not infected. Cropping is strictly a cosmetic procedure and has nothing to do with breed standards, which are determined by good genes through responsible breeding.

And whit scheps ar pron to infections to but you don't cut the ears do you , what abou Dalmatian and other it's illegal caus of the pain and the unnecessary in it .. most do it for ooks anyhow and I'd think if you get a dog you should love em the way they are not like an object for looks
I actually would have preferred natural ears when I got my pup. However, I was a single woman living on a farm, and I wanted my dog to be recognized as a Doberman. She was a great companion and farm dog, easy to socialize, loved people visiting the farm, and did well in obedience training. I only saw her go “full guard dog” three times, but that is why she had her ears done. It’s amazing how fast poachers (armed with rifles) can run for their truck when a Doberman decides they are up to no good.
On the flip side, it’s also amazing to see said dog when she’s stolen an egg and is being chased by an angry hen.

They most likely had licenses and deer tags and this occurred during deer season, but they hadn’t bothered to ask permission from the land owner to hunt on the property. I have to say, she looked pretty frightening when in full “Doberman Gang” mode, even though, if they had bothered to ask, she would have been very friendly.

@@heidi-kx6xt Yes, for me it was. However I wouldn’t if I hadn’t seen other dogs that the veterinarian had cropped. Badly done, or overly long, cropped ears that kept falling would mean the dog went through that discomfort for nothing.

Great assessment that should help owners to make this important and early decision. Having lived with both cropped and uncropped doberman's for 23 years, I'm in disagreement with just one of your points. You noted that cropping may "limit a dog's expressions". I found exactly the opposite. The cropped ear will swivel, point forward or lay back to provide clear signals of the dog's emotions and expressions and their intentions are visible from a distance. The weight of the floppy ear reduces the movement of the ears and expressions. I can't leave my comments without reminding people that floppy ears are not the "natural" state for dogs. All ancestors of the dog, from the wolf down, have or had erect ears. Floppy ears were bred into the species by humans.

Take a deep look into and around a wolfs ear (or any other wild subspecies) and compare it with a short haired cropped dogbreed today. Looks nothing alike. The wolf got a sweet tail on it too🙄 Ears have a function and there is a reason why dogs were born with a complete set of ears. Floppy ears help prevent water from going into the ear canal and protect the ears from insects and burrs and other irritants.
You're right, the cropping process (mainly the wrapping) was awful, but in the end it was definitely worth it. And yes, I was judged negatively by a couple people just randomly and unprovoked, which was exceptionally frustrating may I add. But in the end I would do it again, my now 7 month old doberman is beautiful and he goes everywhere with me and my wife and always gets pets and hugs from everyone he meets

I left my girl's ears natural. She's not a show dog and she is not a trained guard dog. I love cropped ears but those natural ears are just as beautiful.
I have a 2 1/2 months pup and we decided early on not to crop his ears and not to dock his tail. When I take him out for a short walk or a car ride I noticed many people and kids will come and ask to pet him as he is always happy as well as goofy looking. He loves people, loves other dogs and cats and is approachable. However, when I tell them he is a Dobbie they are shocked as most people think they are these monsters portrayed in the action movies. He is a true sweetheart and makes friends everywhere we go.

Locked, cocked, cropped and docked. That is Doberman. As long as the owner can handle the upkeep of cropped ears then it’s their preference. When the Doberman has a crop that matches the head shape, it’s absolutely on fire.
I agree that they crop look (i.e. the classic Doberman look) is a great look. These are definitely beautiful dogs.

I left my dobermans ears natural simply because I didn’t want to keep up with posting them only for one or both still not stand up. It’s a big commitment to do it right. My boy was the biggest goof and his floppy ears fit him perfectly.
Your channel has been a game changer for me. I’ve had two purebred dobies with the ears cropped, tail docked and dewclaws removed. I will take responsibility for doing it but I have to say that there was a lot of pressure because the “ renown” vet had a vested interest which would be I assume....money, now over 10 years later I would not Participate in tail docking or ear cropping. I really never considered dewclaws being an issue but maybe that’s another myth for another day. I can see that I will have to continue listening to your very

I would also like to thank and your many followers that are so kind and generous with sharing their experiences. I’m right now in the process of rescuing, both my boys sadly have passed on and I’m ready to look into a rescue(s). I think Covid pretty much convinced me that there’s more than enough room in our family and our hearts and it’s time.
After weighing our options regarding our puppy, my wife and I decided against ear cropping. Years ago we adopted 2 adult Dobies (both are rescues) with cropped ears. The first has a 1-up/1-down pose, while the other has both down. This defintely factored into our decision. Add to this that we received no response from local vets when we asked about whether they offered this service. Finally, after viewing pictures of Dobermans with natural ears, we conceded these dogs are just as beautiful, and are obviously Dobermans. In the end, it is a personal decision, and one shouldn't be judged based on their choice, in my humble opinion. Besides, as more owners opt out of ear cropping, the public will become increasingly aware that Dobies may be featured with either cropped or uncropped ears.

I get why people judge for it. It is a personal decision whether you have your garden bushes and shrubs trimmed or wild looking, as they are inanimate things that belong to you. Dog is not an inanimate object. Dogs are sentient creatures that have limited ability to stand for themselves, so they have to be protected by society.
Apart from the risks already mentioned in the video, as a microbiologist I can't help but think about the potential infections during healing period, especially when proper aftercare isn't followed. It also seems completely mental to me that in US cropping does not have to be done by a vet. Is there some government lobbying from puppy mills or is the legislation from decades ago and nobody has looked at it for years?
I've always been a german shepherd person, since I was young. I love them to bits. But then I adopted a doberman female puppy at 4 months from the SPCA. From the minute my doberman set foot in our home, she made it her home, she was never timid. What an intelligent dog, I never trained her officially except for simple commands here and there. She had uncropped ears, though I would have preferred them cropped (influenced by the 80s tv series, Magnum PI) it never bothered me. The experience I had with my dog made me fall in love with dobermans, very clever and brave dog, she would trot around the yard all the time. I also had a rottweiller that was 2 years younger than the doberman. He was very timid, I don't know whether he was abused earlier, I adopted him at 6 months. The doberman would not even allow the rottweiller to bark or anything like that. They spent many years together but the rottweiller never seemed to get over his fear for the doberman, sometimes all it would take was a look from the doberman and the rottweiller would move away and go sit in the 'naught corner'. I still love the german shepherd breed but dobermans take precedence. I hardly see dobermans in South Africa, let alone ones with cropped ears, don't know whether the law allows for cropping here. They are still cute with uncropped ears though. I totally love the breed, my dog was with us for about 12 years, still miss her after many years since she died. What a breed!!!
German shepherds are a sad breed cause of how many health problems the got from breeding for looks I'd suggest putting a blindfold on and getting to meat shelter dog you'd be suprised what characters and needs fit you people care to much about looks they forget everything else ..

I have had an Irish Setter, a Labrador Mix, a German Shepherd and now I have an uncropped Dobermann. Fortunately none of my dogs ever had any ear infections, but I always clean them from time to time. Especially after a long “digging-session” in the dirt. The dogs usually enjoy it quite a lot and will press their ears to the cloth and even rotate their head.
My dogs have always just been family dogs, so I can’t speak for dogs used in any kind of professional capacity, but as far as I am concerned, I would never crop the ears or the tail if there isn’t any medical reason. It would be illegal in my country anyway.
And I don’t really care about the looks. As long as my dogs are healthy and happy they could have three ears for all I care.
I totally agree with that last line.... happy and healthy is definitely the most important! I love the natural eared Dobermans. I think they look amazing in their own right.
I use the epiotic ear solution twice a month. I keep it in the fridge and use a cotton pad to clean my dachshund’s ears. She loves it.

So sorry to hear about the loss of your Doberman. It took me years to finish grieving over the loss of my Shaney. Speaking of whom, he was a beautiful black Doberman who was a rescue. He was 100% natural, uncropped & undocked. He was just as protective as any cropped & docked Dobie. Also, people would look at his coloring & markings and ask me, "Is that a Doberman?" So, people are not as dumb as you think when it comes to recognizing a Doberman. If you think you'll love showing people how beautiful a natural Doberman can be (as I did), then please skip the literal bloody mess (I used to be a vet tech, so seen ear cropping done) and save yourself a couple hundred dollars.
I lived on a farm and let me tell you, if a dog gets his tail smashed in the gate, it takes FOREVER to heal and many times ends up amputated So, to avoid infections like sepsis, dock the tail

Exactly. Dobermans are a working breed. The cropped look is a large part of their innate effectiveness. Nobody ever had to ask me what kind of dog I had. And everybody kept a comfortable distance between me and my children. As a single mom for years, the peace of mind my dogs provided me with was priceless.
Nice video. I will add that cropping should be done early, about 8 weeks & best handled by the breeder with a experienced vet. Never try this on an older puppy. At the right age the puppies barely notice. You will see them playing & chewing on each other the next day! Don’t apply human feelings to them, completely different pain threshold.

@@voodoomaster111 it's not for cosmetic purposes though. the breeds that have their ears commonly cropped are born with thin, weak ears that are generally more at risk and prone to ear infections and hematoma's than other breeds; which is why you see dobermans being cropped and not labradors. while a labradors ears are also folded down like a dobermans labrador's ears are built more thicker and sturdier, while a dobermans ears are thin and frail. bacteria gets trapped in the ear and with nowhere to go creates a breeding ground of infections; hot weather makes it even more worse and painful for the dog.
i know some people use the argument "well why not just get your dogs ears cropped when it's older and starts showing symptoms of chronic ear infections" however waiting to crop a dogs ears until it's an adult is actually much more painful for the dog as it's ear cartilage has fully formed in adulthood, making the surgery much more painful for the dog with a longer recovery time. cropping a puppies ears when young isn't as painful as a puppies ears have soft cartilage that haven't formed yet, making the surgery much more pain free and less invasive which is why it's recommended to crop a dog when it's a puppy, not an adult.
cropping has a lot of health benefits, especially towards breeds who are prone to chronic ear issues.

My mom has always been scared of dobies (we live in usa) until I showed her photos of them without bits cut off. She almost instantly fell in love with them. I'm pretty against cosmetic alterations of anything that can't choose it (docked tails, piercing a baby's ears, etc), but a spay or neuter can help with a lot of things so it's less...objectionable.

A friend of mine had to have her red Dobermans left ear cropped because she kept getting massive hematomas in that one ear for different reasons so now she has one funny ear and one normal one. Just makes her cuter in my opinion
I love Dobbie's with their ears cropped and we had one. The problem we had with her was we live in a very cold winter environment and she got frost bite after a good walk. It's off leash walking for the most part as we live great spot in Deep River, Ontario. Our last girl didn't have her ears cropped and the cold wasn't a problem. We are due to get our next and first male Dobbie in about three weeks. Thank you for your videos. It's my wifes' first pup. She has know idea what coming. Wish us luck

Great video! I have owned both cropped and uncropped dobermans. Everything you have said is true, my current doberman I wasn't going to crop but the breeder would not adopt uncropped puppies. Her specific quote to me when I suggested she did not need to crop was "if you want a hound go get a hound". Obviously she was protecting the breed standards as her dogs are show quality. Cropped ears are a massive project and anyone cropping must be prepared for at least a half hour per day until posted, then 45 minutes every other day to post.
Owning both dogs I think that I can read a cropped dogs body language better than uncropped. My doberman is a year and a half and his ears are funny to watch he will pull them down or pull one down at a time he's quite the clown most days.

I never understood why people make such a big deal about ear cropping yet fail to talk about tail docking or even circumcision? Sounds a bit hypocritical to me.
I’m seriously thinking on getting a Doberman and this helps me decide. I had no idea about the stitches and all the effort I’d have to put into it. For cropping. Though the only reason I wouldn’t Not crop the ears is for breed confusion I very well want them to know my dogs breed and that it is a guarding dog. And that it makes it look very sharp. Tho I will train intensively to be well socialized.
As a kid, my parents showed and bred Great Danes. They also had their ears cropped; that was the AKC standard. That's what I grew up with, and I admit that I love the look. That being said, I do recognize how unnecessary ear cropping is. I would never do it, just as I would never get a cat declawed. Just my two cents.
I appreciate the look but it's difficult to, as a dog lover, like something when you know it's not beneficial for the dog.

And those are the reasons I decided not to crop her ears. But honestly, I think they are beautiful both ways and it's just the owners personal choice. I do get a lot of people praising me when they see her ears not cropped which tells me that people are very vocal about their opinions. I tell them it was just my choice for my own reasons and I am not against ear cropping which I know is not the response they want to hear. Oh well. lol

My first Doberman, DiMicheles Royal Blue Dutchess came from a professional breeder and they gave me the option to crop but I chose to
research it and find a vet after the fact. The cropping went smoothly, she was of course under general anesthesia and never felt a thing.
Her recovery was quick she never messed with her ears. My current Dobie is a rescue girl and her ears were Cropped before I got her.
Sadly her ears being cropped was the least thing that happened to her in the first half of her life. But she's living a good life now and
I'm doing my part to make up for all the loves she didn't get when she was a female breeder for an Amish Puppy Miill :(

Have had dobes for long time the one I had with floppy ears had lots of ear issues ( infections and hematomas) He was only one I got as a puppy and I like the friendlier look.
I saw another video of a doberman training school in the UK (I believe) the guy there said that he wouldn't take a doberman without cropped ears and tail as all the flopping around can cause infections (or something similar). So there could also be an ethical reason as to why it should be done.

Personally, I'm entirely against it unless it's a medical necessity or for work functionality. It just isn't right to put a dog through that purely for cosmetic purposes.
Neutering and spaying may be invasive to the dog but over breeding leads to more dogs in shelters and on the streets so it has a real function that benefits the species a whole.
Soooo you're ok with cutting his balls off or her ovaries out, but painlessly cutting back the ears and tail are a bridge to far too cross?...... please make that make sense
The latest science on traditional spay and neuter would disagree. Did you know there are alternative surgeries that are less invasive and leave the hormones intact while preventing procreation? In fact the full spay and neuter so common in this country is illegal in many European countries. There are many health and behavioral problems caused by shutting down hormone production. And there are alternatives but most vets in the U.S. aren't even trained on how to perform the alternative procedures. That needs to change. Animals (and humans!) have hormones for good reason. Turning them off at a young age comes with many increased risks for serious health problems, including skeletal and joint problems, hard to treat cancers, temperament changes (confident dogs becoming fearful and anxious, for instance), cost issues, etc. It's unnatural and not healthy and yet it's done routinely at very young ages.
I took care of a German Doberman in the early 90’s for about three years when I was living in California. We cropped his ears and tail. I later moved to Sweden where it is illegal to crop and dock and after a while I got really used to seeing them with their natural ears and tail and I started to really like their look. Today though, If I was living at a place where they allowed it I think I with crop the ears and tail. Yes, it’s a hassle in the beginning but then they are good to go. It’s really easy to see their mood with cropped ears. I agree with everything you said with the pros and cons. As long as the people go to a reputable vet with long history with Dobermans it should be fine. Great video, I was searching something good about this beautiful breed and you delivered it.
On a different note... I think prong collars should be illegal more than cropping ears. I see too many owners using them on their Doberman. I guess I come from a different type of dog education/school where I learned a different method of dog training.

Yes, I just recently came across a picture of two dogs with natural ears and tails and since I was not used to seeing them like that I had to ask a Doberman owner of they were Dobermans. They do look like hound dogs with their floppy ears and long tails! I prefer that look!
i’m amazed with how many people didn’t know doberman got their ears cropped lol. a super close friend of mine has a doberman with uncropped ears and he is the sweetest boy ever. i love dobermans with uncropped ears :) i think it’s so much cuter.
Honestly I love the erect ears on dobermans. It looks regal, in a way, though I wish someone would start a breeding program with the doberman and cross with a few dogs that naturally have that trait like pharaoh hounds instead so it didn't have to be cropped.

My daughter eight years ago purchased an American bulldog. We were both against ear cropping. Bruiser came with uncropped ears but his tail was docked not my daughters choice. One day when he was about two my daughter voiced concern about a red line that formed across the flap of one ear. Her vet said that because he formed that red fold irritation across the upper ear where the ear folds he might have to get his ears cropped for medical reasons. You guessed it. We now have an American bulldog with cropped ears. I spent several weekends over at my daughters house just to sit with him through the night cause he was in pain at first then because he was just a big baby about it. He does look fearsome but he’s just a big sweaty pie. Bruiser is now eight years old. My daughter says if she decides to get another American bulldog she will strongly think about having ears done as a puppy. Yes my daughter gets judged when she walks him. Me? I don’t judge anymore. Some breeds I think might do better if ears are cropped for the dogs sake. I’m only working through my own experience and Bruisers experience.
But that's a genetical problem , not a breed problem and infections could have been treated with antibiotics, I'd have gotten another opinion instead ...
IMO There is no SINGLE FOR argument that is worth the surgery, however a combination of multiple FOR Arguments that makes sense (Not like the originally look, breed standard or Ease of recognition)
If don’t like the look of the natural ears of your dog, don’t get the dog. You shouldn’t need to change your dog for you own cosmetic desire.

Floppy ears arent really natural honestly. Most dog's ears stiffen up as they age. Floppy ears are the result of breeding for "cuteness" whether intentional or not.

I know this is an older video but I just got a female Doberman mix last month and have been watching these videos. My little girl, 55 lbs and growing was a rescue and her ears weren’t cropped. Had her DNA checked and her momma was full blooded dobie, her dad could have been a Catahoula as that’s the next highest dog on the list. 65 percent Doberman and she shows a lot of what I am seeing in your videos. First time ever having a Doberman, replaced a 13 year old lab that I had to put down. Your videos are very informative for me in this breed
I have had two Dobermann dogs without cropped ears, both great dogs . I have heard of dogs with cropped ears having trouble with seeds etc getting into their ears causing infections

This is and has always and will probably always be a debate. To crop and dock or not, that is the question. As a life long Dobe owner, I would never not own a Dobe without a docked tail and cropped ears. I want the look along with the breed. Depending on where you get your information from will dictate why the ears and tails are and were cropped and docked to begin with, as well as why it's done or not today. In this day and age in the states it's a show standard. In WW2 the U.S. Marines high command officially enrolled the Dobe into the Marine Forces. They also commanded that all tails were docked and all ears cropped. Why? The Dobe was used to track and kill enemy snipers. That said when there is no tail and "V" shaped ears on a wedge head with a tight skin short fur animal, there's nothing for you to pull on while the Dobe is attacking / killing you. They are designed to make quick work of you, and tails and ears can prolong your demise. Long tails on Dobes are a whip with no protection. Without docking potential breaks in the tail are likely which can lead to later amputation. The ears not being cropped can lead to possible infections from lack of air flow. Despite any arguments or disagreements about the tails and ears think about this. The "natural" floppy ears of a Doberman is a man made aberration. In other words, they are a mistake. No other "dog" in the true wild has floppy ears. Wolves don't. foxes don't, Wild African Dogs don't, nor do hyenas. Though hyena according to many are actually closer to a feline then a canine. Still floppy eared canines in the true wild don't exist. They are a man made flaw in the creation of domestic breeds. Personally I'd rather the cropped ears since with cropped ears, the Dobes intentions can be more easily read. Just as a side note for anyone who reads this, if you are looking for a better chance of your dogs ears both standing after cropping then not, feed them chicken cartilage as part of their diet. You can get it in a powder / pill form. It helps build their cartilage thicker.
Very true! I think a lot of people in other countries don't fully grasp how common ear cropping is in the states either.

I'm actually so happy you mentioned therapy and service dogs in here! My Psychiatric Service Dog is a Doberman and he has the natural floppy ears which the trainer mentioned would be the better route vs getting the dog's ears cropped.
the floppy ears that they are born with are unnatural, didin't your breeder tell you that?
@@justafloridamanfromthe75thRR The floppy ears are the natural ears XD Dobermans have to undergo a surgery to get them cropped (aka pointy) Google is free.
My dog is uncropped, I’ve had both cropped and uncropped don’t really care. I’ve adopted both styles.
My service dog Doberman has cropped ears. It hasn’t really done anything to hinder his work.
I am saving to adopt a doberman. this helped a bit for the decision of their ears. I am going to cropped them, but I am going to make sure it is with a specialized vet, I don't care if it's way more expensive, I want to cropped them in the most safe way possible. Thanks!
