- I'm diving deep into the cost of living between two vibrant cities: London and Cape Town. If you're planning a move or just curious, this video will give you an extensive comparison of expenses in various categories including housing, utilities, groceries, and more. Hey ya'll... the current exchange rate is £1 = R24 ( I use £1 = R20 for quick calculations ).... In hindsight I see that it probably would have been helpful to include both currencies ( or stick to one currency ) ... but I'll take note of that for future videos.
I was about to comment that having a reference currency would make the comparison easier
After spending a few weeks in Sweden and Denmark I said I would never again complain about the cost of living in Cape Town. I came home with a greater sense of gratitude for what we have here.

I visited my family in London for 3 weeks in winter and after 2 weeks of no sun and only being able to afford to eat out at McDonald's with the coupons in the newspaper on the train I was ready to come home to Cape Town

I remember when I moved to SA from Kenya in 2014, and mind you that’s when life was still easy economically, I used to convert a lot. I eventually stopped because the economies are different. However, it is a good metric of gauging a move.

My business partner is UK side now and I moved to Cape Town, we were both in JHB prior to that. The notes are remarkably similar when him and I compare them. Funny though as we both love where we moved to for different reasons. The real culture shock is everything outside of Joburg compared to it, there's a rabbit hole for another day...

Third year living in London from Cape Town . It’s a lifestyle downgrade overall . But if you reduce expenditure a little in London then you can save a lot in Rands
True. Lifestyle will take a bit especially if budget is tight but… but if you can saving here and spending in SA can be pretty awesome.

On your insurance: why not get comprehensive insurance which will cover your house+cars+gadgets. It typically works out cheaper that insuring seperately

There is download speed of up to 1GBps now with broadband in certain areas of the UK. It is expensive though, not needed for one person, but a family or house of multiple occupancy.

A bit late but, here goes: assuming you’re still in London, get contents insurance that includes personal belongings. This will cover gadgets & luggage that you carry around with you. You may have to specify items that are over a certain value e.g. single item limit can be around £1,500, so camera lenses and other equipment can be replaced. Personal belongings cover also includes up to £500 cash, but this does vary. If you have expensive bikes, it’ll cover that too. Worth looking into restrictions when travelling out of the UK though.

Don’t they have a monthly all inclusive transport pass? In Madrid they have an Abono that costs €23 (for zone 1) and you can use the Metro, the Bus, and the overland Trains.

In your opinion, what is a good salary then in Tech in the UK and do you think that one could be able to save in pounds and purchase stuff like property in SA? From some that I have heard from it's been said that there usually isn't enough at the end of the month in UK😅
Haha as for a “good” salary, it really depends on a lot of factors like your lifestyle, work experience, where you work/live, etc. £100K is a very good salary to some and also a really low salary for others.
I think you can totally save enough to purchase property in SA because you have a higher purchasing power with the GBP… I still pay a mortgage equivalent to about £500 for a 3-bedroom apartment in Cape Town. That’s about a third of my rent in London… and I’m slowly saving towards purchasing something here (but that’s gonna take quite a while because property here is pretty expensive)
But if money is what you are really after, you wanna look at countries like the US and Middle East. You can make really good monies there.
Tip, You can save on the insurance by getting a Ultimate reward account. All those insurance included. The accounts cost about £17 a month though.

Lived in London for 2 years and it was hell expensive.
I spend in rands over 2 years on the transport system (bus & trains/underground) the equivalent of R160 000. Rent for a tiny room was expensive in an apartment.
Food in UK if you don't buy at a decent place is expensive, this is why the obese amongst the poor is rife due to constant fast food.
The weather sucks 80% of the time, noise levels are stupid loud, constant barrage of police and emergency vehicles not to mention the traffic.
The only good thing was cell coverage/data and the internet that was cheap!

Hi Tino you could save money by combining insurance instead of getting everything separately. I have been abroad for a few years, but before we left the UK we had comprehensive household insurance from John Lewis that included cover for our gadgets home and away, legal cover, bicycle cover (you mentioned being a keen cyclist) etc. etc. We save a fair few quid cutting out all the separate covers and taking the comprehensive route. Not all insurers offer this, but shop around. Good luck!

I've watched several of comparison videos between South Africa and other countries in regards to cost of living, but the most important factor to me, is what realistic salary can you achieve in the 2 countries before doing any comparison. The South African Rand is weak and will probably get worse, but if you can achieve a better salary/cost of living ratio in South Africa, then it makes no sense to relocate. Then again, if your salary/cost of living ratio is better in any other country, you'll be better off relocating.
I always look for videos where people concentrate on salary/cost of living ratio instead of just doing conversions, as it will always proof that South Africa is the cheapest option, but if you don't earn enough in SA and can't find a better job/salary in SA, then you're better off relocating.

Cost of living is all relative. It really depends how much of an upgrade your salary will be in another country.

Another thing you need to factor in is health insurance as in UK this is free at point of service.
Also you're in London where transportation is ok. I have a car and Lordie is it expensive to own a car in the UK!!!

Just for better perspective however, if you compare the cost of living in London vs Cape Town to earnings in London vs. Cape Town.....then what is the more affordable option? It is one thing comparing costs directly, however it has to be compared to the income and/or income potential as a percentage perhaps.

For this video, I wanted to focus purely on the cost of living and not affordability (otherwise the video would be so much longer). The target audience is people who want a better understanding and realistic figures when trying to determine their basic costs of living in London (... so that they can determine on their own whether they can afford it or not based on what their salaries will be ). In my own case, my salary increased by quite a bit, but the costs/income ratio actually got worse although that doesn't take into account the purchasing power of the GBP and other factors like lifestyle.

I Pay Rain R549p/m for 60mb/sec for Up and 40 down on 5g, which is quite affordable and it has only went down 2 days in the past 7 months average

Yep I definitely am! My rent is going up to 1450 and I’m actually on the search for another place now. I’m happy to get a 1-bed but the challenge is that most 1-beds in the city and in this price range don’t have much extra space for a home office space too so I’ve been looking further out in zones 5+… 2-beds in the city are out of the question now given the rent increases so I also don’t mind moving out towards Berkshire, Surrey, Milton Keynes areas.
As for further education; I do some certifications to stay updated in my current role but tbh I never considered doing a masters until recently because it just didn’t seem worth it given the roles/careers I’ve been pursuing… but I definitely am looking into doing some certifications and/or masters broaden my skillset beyond my current technical domains (i.e so maybe moving into business, management, etc.)

Hey bro, love the videos... I too live in London and i think you can get better internet at a cheaper price. I don't know much about speeds but i'm currently on 1 Gbps Fibre Broadband with expected wifi speed of 250-450 for 25 pounds a month.
Unfortunately my area doesn’t have fibre yet and i have the highest speeds available 😭. I’m so jealous of y’all with gigabit internet and I’m here with what feels like a dial up connection 😂. I’m definitely making sure I get a place with full fibre when I move from here though! Good to know there’s light at the end of the fibre tunnel. 💪🏾

Groceries £340 for one person is a bit of an exaggeration even if you shop in Waitrose; that is enough for a family of 3/4 per month.
You’re probably right and I’m always on the lookout to optimise my expenses…. But a small caveat I probably should have included is that £340 is the avg of money spent in stores like M&S, TESCO, ASDA, etc. which is slight more than just groceries and food so the real figure for groceries is a bit lower than that.
Groceries are expensive. Considering that you buy it more than once in a month.

I heard you mention travel insurance and monthly premiums. I suppose your insurer is not a South African based insurance company . There is no travel insurance that exceeds six months on offer in South Africa. When one has a relative working abroad or on a cruise ship they are not insured after six months of their contract has lapsed which to me is very risky. The cost of hospitalization or dying abriad is astronomical and cannot be afforded by ordinary people anywhere in the world let alone by South Africans.
Lifestyle is how people should choose where they live in the world. Yes USA has no paid maternity leave (generally) but if you do not intend to have children, that should not be on your cons list. Similarly, if weather does not affect your mood (some of us get whacked by seasonal depression) or you're not an outdoorsy, then the weather probably should not be on the top of your UK (or Ireland) con list.
How do you use electricity for heating in the winter...our bills for gas were around 400 pounds per month the winter which is insane
I don't have gas in my home and I only have electric heaters hence the electricity for heating... I'm not sure if it is worth investigating but you could look for off-the-shelf electric heaters to see if that could be a better alternative for heating... The gas prices were pretty high last winter due to the war but they might be going down for this coming winter.
It would be nice if you'd convert financial figures between the two currencies..I.e £s=To Rands and and Rands to £s
Nice video. Car in SA is compulsory. You had a "free" car but you need to include it as a cost - R8000 per month. There's also travel. Compare the cost of travelling from SA somewhere for holiday - you can't even afford once a year, vs from UK you could travel to EU once a month without even thinking about it. Home security in SA but that is also compulsory unless you're in a gated complex, in which case there is Levies to pay - don't think that was included in the comparison
Thank you for the feedback 💪🏾. Yeah a car is necessary in SA for the convenience but I definitely wouldn’t be paying R8000 pm for it. I would go for a cheaper option similar to what I was already driving ( no more than about R150K ) and I would also pay for it cash because car loans are pretty wild in SA.
And yesss I forgot to include my levies! I pay about R1400 pm for levies and these cover security and some of the home maintenance too. Good call out. Security is definitely compulsory! I don’t even know how that would look like if I wasn’t in a gated community.
And you’re right about travel… I didn’t include it here as I didn’t see it as a “necessary” cost but travel does look very different between the two countries so it also wouldn’t be an apples-to-apples comparison… Due to the high cost of international travel from SA, all of my travel was local and mostly around the western cape… in the UK it’s a good mix of both local and international while not breaking the bank!

Question I have for you Tino, did you major in IS or comp sci? And what advice or tips do you have for anyone looking to work for Amazon internationally without going via SA first?
On another tangent, I'm curious to know have you had any experiences if racism there so far, and how does it pale compared to CT?
I studied Electrical and Computer engineering so I have a strong Comp.Sci background from the Comp.Eng side of my degree....
If you are trying to go international, good and relevant work experience (with a good portfolio of work) is what you really need. Companies that hire internationally do so because they can't find the talent they are looking for locally... so you essentially need to stand out and be more attractive than the average applicant... a degree and formal qualifications alone aren't enough because everyone already over-indexes on these. Imagine two candidates applying for a cloud engineering role... one has a comp.sci degree with some certifications but no work experience and the other also has a comp.sci degree but has also built an online booking and order management system for their friend's small business as a side hustle... who would you consider hiring?
As for racism... not much to be honest. That hasn't crossed my path just yet... however, they tend to be more vocal on social media platforms but meh...

Mortgage details are current… but the rest were from around August Last year before I moved this side.
