For all the flaws of the prequels I think overlook the actually cool political drama George was trying to convey. Now could the Jedi and Senate bough and freed his mother without causing war? ...Maybe? I dunno.
Watto treated them well, relatively speaking. Much better than being a slave of someone who beats or starves you, works you to death, etc. Watto was fond of them in his own way, especially Ani.

I play the Podracing games a ton, so hearing Vinny impersonate Watto and coming so close on his voice is absolutely... scary to me. But now I fully understand that Vinny is a great voice actor.
