they don't have to because, what percentage of people are going to buy a £1000 cpu when they can get all they need from ryzen + this is why Vega is going to hurt Nvidia 4k hamming for £350 GPU vs their £600 and don't think that Volta is going to be better value.

Linus's reaction to the NHS being affected was scary
It's a pretty dire situation.
All the patient records, scan/test results, medication history, etc. etc. has been encrypted.
That puts a lot of people who are already in bad situations into potentially life-threatening ones.
I'm certain that this wasn't done intentionally, but it could cause people to die.
That could potentially land the creator with vast counts of manslaughter charges.
Someone somewhere is currently shitting bricks, as they should be.
I sincerely hope they have a kill switch somewhere but it's unlikely.
A 'kill switch' was accidentally found by someone who looked through the source code and noticed that the ransomware pinged a web address to see if it existed; if it didn't, the encryption would continue; the person just registered the domain - he didn't know at the time that it was a kill switch though.
If that is the case, I hope they nuke it.
Sure, they could continue to cash in on the ransoms but I doubt they want peoples' lives resting on their conscience.
The guy that registered the killswitch domain can't decrypt the existing infections. The domain being registered only stops new infections of this particular strain of the worm. And the authors could release a new variant with a different killswitch mechanism in a few days.
I don't know to what degree the NHS was affected, but even if their live environment was hit the records etc should be safe with a day or so lost data at most if they have their storage solutions properly implemented. Basically when you have such a responsibility you regularly want to make a disaster recovery backup and run incrementals pretty until a set number of incrementals have run. At my company it happens to be weekly + an incremental each night.
Then if something happens which takes out both sites or corrupts the data, the production virtual machines and fileservers can be restored from tapes which are stored elsewhere. There are ofcourse other ways to go about it, but basically a solution where you can restore it from somewhere the data can't be touched by a running system and an archive of quite some time should be mandatory for anything at the scale of the NHS.
Is it perfect? Nope, a worst case would result in some severe downtime and partial data loss (since the last completed backup that is transferred off site). But the historical data still exists and no virus can ruin tapes or cloud storage it can't access in an archival place.
It would affect the effectiveness of being able to function as a hospital until services are restored for sure, but for daily operation and emergency situations like life preserving surgery there should also be backup procedures in place that will continue at reduced capacity as long as essentials such as electricity, water, etc are available (whether its from the grid or locally generated/water reserves, etc).
At my place of employment our fileservers at the time of this hitting the news were all up to date, but due to working with Citrix (terminal server environment) until a few days before it reached the news our image for the terminal servers did not have the patches in it. Because there were some issues with something in the candidate image that was made it can easily end up taking a long time before windows updates make it to production along with other essential installed software updates for essential business applications. Then you'd have a big risk where one infected user can spread to all terminal servers which on their own don't contain valuable data but the users working on it do have rights to the data on the fileservers and that is a big risk.
Edit:
Microsoft brought out a MS17-010 patch out for operating systems still in extended support around the end of march. Operating systems such as server 2003 and windows xp didn't get one until this worm had mostly done its thing, may not seem like a big thing to fix systems that old. But the reality of business solutions are sometimes scary, there may be a device requiring a network connection for which the control software only runs on XP. Or you have legacy software that you legally have to keep alive due to data retention requirements and software can only work on server 2003 or something. Disabling SMBv1 isn't even an option then because that's the only version of SMB the bloody things support.
I was rather suprised they brought out a patch for it at all, didn't expect one because they are out of support (unless you're a major customer and pay them to make one). But I guess they either had to make it for a customer or decided the impact was too big since it spreads so easy over the network.

The ransomware worm was already patched 2 months ago by Microsoft. Anyone on Windows 10 with all updates installed is safe. The hospitals and telecom company are only affected by it because they still run Windows XP.

If you don't know that the worm is on your network- it will encrypt your off line plug in drives when they are plugged in to back up. Later when they pull the keys, it's gone.

Enable encryption of snapshots or backups with a master key. This prevents the worm from infecting the backups in general.

Create 20 dummy files per every legit file, also do 2 to 4x on folders. Write a script to take share and pools offline the second a dummy file is touched. Really best way in my opinion to protect network storage. Some data will get encrypted by ransomware but if done right most will be saved and damage will be minimal.
New NVIDIA tech... of course... just installed a GeForce 1080 TI a couple weeks ago and ordered a Quadro P4000 yesterday.

Best thing to do against ransomware worms is to do multiple backups - frequently. . . that way you can wipe your PC without worries.
