One of the horses that they used for the double for Hidalgo it is said that Viggo bought one of them. Now that reminds me I was always going to look that up.
Watch the movie" Smoky". Starring Fess Parker I saw this movie for the first time back in the '70s. I cried for days after it. But if you ever do get a chance to watch it beautiful movie!!
This shows why it's important that wild horses should be able to roam free. Powerful ending to this and a message for now. Protect Wild horses before we lose them.
@@22espec That's what I said they should be protected they are iconic emblems to the USA. The pioneers wouldn't have got far without them. We owe them freedom
Yes. They are great horses. I hope that more people join in to protect the Mustang. We even have a car named after them. But because the areas where they live, the land can't support them all. Some really need to be removed from the ranges, not by killing them but by adoption. I have always wanted to adopt one. Perhaps when I get my land and then I could adopt. Mustangs are strong. And their hooves are tough, their legs the tendons and bone are strong. They can live on just grass hay, and wouldn't have to have grain. The movie and many others show them in a positive way. They should be protected and the breeding herds left alone for most of the year, only brought in to remove some to make it easier for the rest can have the resources they need.

And I think what really brings more compassion and love in this movie is the fact it's based on a true story. When Frank let Hidalgo go it's my understanding if I remember correctly he had a heard and sired a few of them young ones and to this day the wild horses in the Oklahoma protected lands still run free and those are hidalgo's family.

This is a nice movie, I have a lot of respect for the mustang horse now. This is a powerful scene, a greatful owner letting go his partner, his ride to be free. Really nice message.
Having had that spiritual bond with my hunter, I feel the pain of saying goodbye. He passed at 27 from cancer. He took my heart with him. I had the same with my gelding. Lost him Jan 2019, after 22 years together. Losing him was a killer. The morning I put him to sleep, he stood there with his head in my arms, and I swear he was telling me it was ok, it was time to go.

With the exception of one flaw, this movie ending was one of the greatest! In reality, had this very learned and knowledgable horseman actually set his beloved Hidalgo free to live out the rest of his life with the wild mustangs, the horseman would have unshoed Hidalgo before sending it off, as keeping them on would, more than likely, eventually damage the hooves. If you look at the ending, Hidalgo still has his horseshoes on.
@@raptorblack2269 I, yes it could of course, but nails will damaged the hooves if the horseshoe is lost (as when something is nailed on an another, and the dart is bendend on the opposite, the horn will tear). After a long period, if the horse is walking a lot, they can be used and began nice and round as on a barefoot horse. All cracks can be "sanded" by rocks and strong soil, and it'll be better for the horse. Sorry, I'm a french horse trimmer, and I might not use the technical correct words :)
I have a feeling viggo will miss hildago dearly but he knows he made the right decision by setting him loose and letting him be free with his herd and he will never forget his best friend.
It really is amazing to watch wild horses, especially in the Americas. They originated here in the Americas crossed the land bridge during the ice age, spreading across the fields of the rest of the world, and then sadly dying out here in the Americas. However, they were brought back over by us humans to the lands where their ancestors once roamed the same fields free, completing a long and hard journey to get here.
I think this movie was not only about a man and his horse but of the connection between them! They both respected each other and helped each other! The ending was touching and tearful that he paid for those horses to be free!!!that grabs my heart every time I see this movie! ❤
In Wyoming, we still have two wild horse herds. The Red Desert Herd and the Pryor Mountian herd. Half the fun in hunting one of these areas is to be able to see the wild horses.
I rode my bicycle from the West Coast to the East Coast for 5000 miles and I saw those mountains and the wild horses in Sundance Wyoming and it is just like it is on the movie, an amazingly majestic animal that will get your immediate admiration. What a country the United States is. what a country....
I cry for the wild horses, knowing there were large herds like this 100 years ago, never to be seen again......50, 000 wild horses in Government holding pens (BLM) and only 20, 000 left wild and free...all do to blood money and greed, political and corporate greed........My heart aches for the wild horses:(
the wild horse herds are destroying ecosystems because of over grazing due to overlylarge herds and not enough pasture land. The native grazing animals are suffering because of this. Is BLM doing it right? I don't know ,but I don't agree with allowing large herds of horses to roam un-checked simply because of some bleeding hearts.
Hidalgo is one of my all time "feel good" animal movie, however, it goes into some dark territory. I wish they had made it more clear what he was doing here. Hopkins used all of his winnings from the race to pay for the lives of these horses, saving one of the traditional Mustang herds. That was really never made clear.

I remember this movie on the Big screen, love the story. I have learned alot about the people and the culture inthis movie. It moved my heart, especially at the end What a beautiful view, I cried.
It is beautiful and I enjoy it as well. Hollywood made one mistake--Hidalgo's shoes are not removed before he is freed which could cause considerable trouble if it were a real story. The horse used to play Hildalgo was actually purchased by Viggo.
I have never managed to forget about this movie. It was one of many that I went alone to the cinema to see at the time. Frank T. Hopkins's story is admirable, a story of overcoming and of strength, of truth and inspiration as is told in this movie, with the great perfomance of Vigo Mortensen. But in this ending is lacked of Jazira´s presence, played by Zuleika Robinson without her, the indian horse never would have won the difficult race.

Unfortunately because Hopkins was proven such a liar in his lifetime, it puts a damper on the movie
You don't have to be a horse lover. Even a dog lover. This is such a powerful scene.
The little tear in Viggos eye as he watches Hidalgo...Beautiful!
He's good in making that little tear. He did it with frodo before the breaking of the fellowship. And when Boromir died...
