I started watching your videos at the beginning of my my dye journey and now I am rewatching with more experienced eyes. I am so excited to try this since I have executed each technique and now I will piece them together! 🤓💞 I have some logwood dye leftover from a previous experiment, and I've been saving pomegranate rinds. I even made my own iron water concoction using rusty nails. I think I am going to have a tough time moving past that dark khaki when I see it. I have some silk noil that I have fallen in love with and I think it is just right for this process. 🥰
Thank you! I source most of my fabrics locally from local vintage dealers but I also buy online from some companies that I feel have good ethics. And yes I make and sew everything myself ☺️🤍
But did you add the logwood TO the pomegranate batch? or did you, after that deep green was achieved, tossed the pom dye and made the logwood in the same iron pot?
Thank you!!! Oh gosh the thing about a duvet it I’d need a HUGE pot or bigger than I have at the moment but if you have a large enough pot the same principles apply and you could always do some kind of tie dye effect so the size of the pot isn’t quite as important. 😊
I have an interesting question! Yesterday I dyed a costume grey with walnut leaves It is a beautiful colorahift. The pants I did yesterday in hot liquids, And the shirt I left overnight and transfered in the morning to the ferrous sulfate In cold liquids What I found, is that the cloth this morning, turned a more greenish grey, while yesterday it was a clear greyish grey. I wonder if heat and cold have anything to do with thebdifferent shades we can accomplish. Maybe heat opens up the fibres more to make them more available for the dye
I love dark grey. I used to dye old linen sheets with industrial dye and they looked fantastic. But now no way will I use industrial dye. Will try dying with ash (I have a firewood stove) .... anybody tried ash?
One more question, With cellulose fibres, How long would you leave them maximum, in a ferrous sulfate, or iron water mix. Less than one hour? Around 10-20 minues?
Thank you for your sharing! Always love the way you make the videos with lovely little helper around! May I know what would happen if I am not using a dedicated pot just for iron? Also is there any different by using iron water? I tried to use iron water but it never goes as deep as yours, I only got light grey.
Hello we just did another video on dark colours that might be a little simpler to follow .... I just like to keep my iron stuff separate as it can contaminate colours very easily but you don’t necessarily have to. It might be more to do with the tannin content of the dye you’re using along side the iron rather than the iron it’s self.

amazing!! so curious tho how you dispose of the dye bath afterwards, especially the one that had the ferrous powder in it.. is it safe to be poured down the drain? or do you store it to use again?
So with some dye baths I use them again as an exhaust. I like to make sure they are a neutral ph before disposing of them down the sink and with iron water I tend to keep it for a while, getting as many uses as possible out of it and then poor it down the drain. Hope that helps 😊
@@billynou super helpful, thank you! now I am wondering how you store it haha, is this something you'd keep in, say a mason jar and have stored in the fridge between uses?

Hello, i was wondering whether this also works for synthetic fabrics, since I have a synthetic fabric, store bought dye won't dye it since it only works for natural fibers, but it has managed to stained it. I wonder how I could salvage it.
How would you suggest going about making a natural black dye i can use to sponge dye a white cotton coat ? I want the finish to be almost like a stonewashed grey/black similar to a lot of avantgarde fashion labels are putting out there with their "cold dye" faded items and what not . Labels like D.HYGEN and Boris Bijjan Saberi are doing a lot of this kind of technique . Thanks.
Hmm you could look into painting with natural dyes. Or try going for as black dye as possible by over dyeing various colours.... it’s quite along process but tends to come out looking quite stone washed 😊
Hey. You could explore some natural dye painting techniques..... I find that most things I dye “black” end up having a nice stone washed feeling, especially if the fabric is a nice quality cotton or linen.😊
@@billynou thanks for that , would you suggest getting a pot of the dye set up and placing the garment down and just sponging areas of it until its a a stonewahsed sort of feel and wash it and see what it looks like and possibly repeat that process or do you suggest placing the whole garment in a bath of the dye then possibly doing some heavier sponging afterward ? There are a lot of cool brands on Instagram, a couple that pop to mind are rudyjude, freenatives, hara the label and I sell some naturallly dyed slow fashion items too on billynou.com @ billynouapparel If you’re wanting to learn to natural dye there are lots of online natural dye classes and I’d suggest getting some books to get started. We also have a couple of ebooks available on our website too. Good luck! 😊
You can do this with any natural fiber, the colours may come out slightly different though and the mordanting process is different for plant and animal fibers. 😊
I have just stumbled upon your page and you are just amazing! Thank you so much! I have a question. I am wanting to create this beautiful black color on a project I am preparing for, but I do not want a solid dye, looking to have more of a tie-dye look. Would I be able to achieve that the best if I sprayed the color on the the bunched up fabric and just keep applying color every 15 min. Or would It be okay to just put the bunched up fabric into the pot? Thank you so much!
Hi! Thank you so much! I’ve been learning so much for you! Do you know any other elements / combos that can be used to get a black dye? I haven’t find de pomegranate or logwood where I live. Thank you so much!
Hey the dark colours do tend to be quite colour fast as the iron acts as a mordant. But natural dyes will always change over time.... it’s part of their charm 😊
Thanks ☺️ I like to try and keep my pot for using iron separate because iron is so powerful and can really effect the colours even with just the tiniest amount 💗🔮
Hi! I'm an amateur when it comes to natural dyeing but would you be able to achieve the same results with ferrous powder mixed directly in the same pot as the logwood dye? After it's mordanted, of course
Hi! It’s worth giving it a go... I don’t tend to put iron directly in the pot and then heat it but I know some people “pre-mordant” with iron. So you could also try that by dipping your fiber in iron water before you dye it ... hope that helps and gives you something’s to try!
Ah seems to be quite difficult for a lot of people to find logwood. It sure there is really a substitute.... although there are various ways of achieve if dark colours. you may have to make an international purchase for logwood if you want to try it 😕
Hi, lovely video. Do you buy the pomegranate and leave to go stale or can you use from fresh? Where do you buy log wood and iron from? I have two 1940s jackets that need reviving due to sun fade Dylon just didn't do it xx
Hello... I eat the pomegranate and save the skins by either by drying them out or freezing them ... you should be able to find suppliers of logwood and iron online.. they are quite easy to get hold of 😊
I am in the process of dyeing a tannin black, walnut leaf costume, For a short film set in old times It is very exiting. The pants turned a beautiful beige, and now I am taking my time to transfer them to the ferrous sulfate I used handmade iron water. Let's see!
i just used the iron powder and it says i cant dispose it on rivers so how is this natural? if i dispose it through my sink is going basically to the river. Also my hands are black for 4 days now, and i had to use chemicals to wash it out of my bathroom. where can i dispose a full bottle of iron water?
Sounds like you aren’t using the correct iron powder... i think I replied to your comment on another video.... iron is a metal and ferrous sulphate is basically rust... you only need. Tiny bit and it shouldn’t be turning your hands black as you shouldn’t be touching it really and you shouldn’t be using that much....gloves are a good idea 😉
I HAVE a QUESTION. How can I make it last longer? Also can I sell what I make I want to make eco friendly dog clothes and harness? So I am in the research face
You’ll need to do list of experiments but popper scouring and mordanting will be very important. If you want to sell them then there’s no reason why you can’t ! Good luck 🥰
Madam... Logwood doesn't exist in my country and pomegranate is rarely sold at the market. Iron would reacts with tannin, so... Can I use green tea instead? Thank you...
The logwood and pomegranate react with the iron too so tannin is a great place to start. You could try over dying with indigo or some other dyes. I’m not sure about green tea .... I’ve never used it to dye with.... I can’t imagine it have by a strong colour. 😊
I think you could make a paint with charcoal but I’m not sure a dye would be very colour fast.... having said that I’m sure there is someone out there who has done it!
Hey this looks like a great recipe however before I dive in the video more I have a few questions: 1. Is this dye safe on the skin in the long run(since sweating in clothes your pores are open to anything to come in)? 2. Is it safe for any fabric? 3.How long will it last? 4. How many clothes can I use with the same solution? 5. Is there a way to incorporate it with washer machine?(sorry if you use one in the video I havent watched it fully). 6. Is there other safer natural methods without the use of dye? Sorry I had so many questions but I would really like to know what you know because it seems your the only one to discover this recipe. Thank you.
@@billynou I want to use the leaves of the trees to print on the fabric as you do. But I still couldn't do it. That's because I don't understand the technology here. Vinegar, iron concentration. How to prepare these properly? About the initial steps Can you tell me?
Hmm it really depends on what fabric you’re using and what plants. I would suggest scouring your fiber thoroughly and mordanting. Then you can place your plants onto your fiber and maybe use a rod to roll the fiber around tightly....you could also dip your fiber in iron water before rolling as this will help the marks from the plant matter to become visible but it will result in grey/blue colours. Don’t be afraid to experiment and keep trying! Good luck!
@@billynou Wash well. What to wash. I think my technical knowledge is not enough. Plants are not correct. We do not have maple leaves. There are roses.

Yes!! You could just try any tannin rich dye (like oak galls... we’ve just uploaded a new video 😉) and an iron water after bath ! Good luck!
Want to know r the colours fast and what care does the fabric need after dying
Hey the dark colours do tend to be quite colour fast as the iron acts as a mordant. But natural dyes will always change over time.... it’s part of their charm 😊
Nice!!
Thanks 😊
Were i can find logwood? I'im fron Italy and i don't underground 😅
You should be able to find it easily on line 💗
why is your iron powder greenish? i just found the black one
Hey ... if you search for ferrous sulphate powder you should find it ☺️
Gorgeous video 🖤
Love you
Hiiii, I want Make a black color...
why do you have a dedicated iron pot and spoon?
love the video btw!
Thanks ☺️ I like to try and keep my pot for using iron separate because iron is so powerful and can really effect the colours even with just the tiniest amount 💗🔮
what type of iron powder do you use - can you provide a link
It’s called ferrous sulphate 🖤
Thank you so much.
Thank you 😊
@Billynou , is this colour is fix ?? I mean do this get washed ??
You can wash it yes... gently with cool water and ph neutral soap ☺️ all natural colours are likely to change over time though !
Beautiful 🥰
Thank you
hi, where i live its almost impossible to find logwood is there a substitute?
Ah seems to be quite difficult for a lot of people to find logwood. It sure there is really a substitute.... although there are various ways of achieve if dark colours. you may have to make an international purchase for logwood if you want to try it 😕
Hi, lovely video. Do you buy the pomegranate and leave to go stale or can you use from fresh? Where do you buy log wood and iron from? I have two 1940s jackets that need reviving due to sun fade Dylon just didn't do it xx
Hello... I eat the pomegranate and save the skins by either by drying them out or freezing them ... you should be able to find suppliers of logwood and iron online.. they are quite easy to get hold of 😊
I am in the process of dyeing a tannin black, walnut leaf costume,
For a short film set in old times
It is very exiting.
The pants turned a beautiful beige, and now I am taking my time to transfer them to the ferrous sulfate
I used handmade iron water.
Let's see!
i just used the iron powder and it says i cant dispose it on rivers so how is this natural? if i dispose it through my sink is going basically to the river.
Good luck 🥰
@@billynou thank you so much!!!
You’re welcome
How long does it stays the colors?
When you use iron the colours tend to last really well 😊
@@billynou but the colors change when u Iron it right?
what was that powder you put in the pot?
I think you mean the iron powder? 😊
@@billynou but its yellow?
Beutifull dear
Thank you 💗
love it
Thank you
Thank you so much
🥰
Can we use charcoal?
I think you could make a paint with charcoal but I’m not sure a dye would be very colour fast.... having said that I’m sure there is someone out there who has done it!
Hey this looks like a great recipe however before I dive in the video more I have a few questions:
Thank you.
what’s the song???
Cassinisounds on Instagram 😊
I tried a lot. But environmental printing cannot be done.pls send me
Hello. I’m not quite sure I understand the question sorry 😕❤️
@@billynou I want to use the leaves of the trees to print on the fabric as you do. But I still couldn't do it. That's because I don't understand the technology here. Vinegar, iron concentration. How to prepare these properly? About the initial steps
Can you tell me?
@@billynou Thank you for replying to me.
Very very cool! I love your videos and have learned a ton from them! We live on different continents but I would still love it if you made a video telling us how/where you find your fabrics....
Thank you! I just replied to a similar question but I’ll reply again here too ☺️ I get most of my fabrics locally from vintage dealers here in France but I also do buy on line from companies I feel have good ethics 😊
BillyNou Thank you! I’d love to know what those online companies are if you feel like you can share. Thanks!
Sorry the light quality isn’t great was interested in watching
Sorry it didn’t do it for you
First scrape the black dye off the camera lense next time !
Oh right yes ok! Thanks for your amazing comment
@@billynou I'm trying to say you need much more lighting 😂
no se aprecia bien el video falta luninosidad
I’m sorry but your lighting is very poor and hard to see the colors and what your doing
I agree
I have poorer eyesight, and even with my brightness all the way up, it's hard to see :
That's because it's black dye
Probably looks black
Lovely upload! I think you'd like my content too. Keep up with your fantastic work! 🧡💕
Really could have done without the wardrobe change. Came here to learn how to use natural dies, not watch you change.
you know why you changed your clothes on camera girl…
I do yes
These ONE"S and those ONE"S ... which ones??? lol
