The ncr is far removed from being an actual republic. If it was, well, money would mean less. Republics can last and stand stable. Democracies fail hard. Ask athens. However, the Roman republic lasted as a more stable entity than AthenIan democracy. Regardless, votes don't ultimately matter if the law gets broken by the corrupt. At least with house, and the courier, you can know who the man in the tower is, not some faceless pencil pushers who don't care either. The only a few things are worse than a single tyrant, and that is multiple little ones. Which is how Germany was for centuries. So, at least the courier can reach peak levels of power by not being an ass. Only that play through yields the thoroughly most powerful courier possible. Then, by that same token the courier can have is "kingdom built by a traveling man", and a good one at that. To project your thoughts of what can go wrong is disingenuous to the character. Yes, we mold him, but blue clay is still blue clay until it's not. The courier who wields the most power, needs it the least. This falls in with a philosopher king, and as such reigns supreme, but accessible and just as human as everyone else.

We have mostly the same view conserning the factions of NV. I personally like house more since House IS immortal. He was in a coma was because of the lack of the platinum chip. With your help he can have his equipment and machinery running stable and efficiently. I don't think that benny could've killed house, hell, if the courier wasn't a god he/she probably couldn't have survived houses securitrons but that's outside the point. I think he'll be nice and cozy in his tube for a long time. The guy above also mentioned some great points which I totally agree upon. But I have to admit the ncr and house are both good options, I just think House is the better pick. BTW I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU ABOUT YES MAN! Been telling about the same things for years but nobody took me seriously. Glad to see we see eye to eye on that one 👍.

@@victuss1413 The thing is that communism isn't the same kind of philosophy as democracy, the more apt comparison here is American democracy vs communist Chinese authoratarianism (or authoritarian socialism if you want to be more exact). But even then, that misses the point. The Great War didn't start because of a war over philosophies or theories of economics or government, it started because of resource shortages with each side perpetuating anti-communist or anti-capitalist sentiment as a means to control their population. Thus House's point about the 'fate of democracies' is flawed from the get go, as the Great War grew from a war that started entirely due to resource shortages. Both America and China could have been authoritarian or democratic, the nukes still would have dropped. After all, it isn't like the American people voted to nuke China.

It’s kind of ironic. The courier, the player, is a walking death machine. With the right skills a charismatic leader or a brilliant scientist. They’re capable of anything to the point where every faction has to use the courier, they are the axis on with the power struggle for the Mojave tilts. But the one thing they can not do is truly seize power for themself.

Even without the implication that yes man plans on becoming more assertive and perhaps seizing control you never get to decide policy beyond which factions are allowed to live. The Mojave is shown to be lawless and chaotic in the independent ending implying you are either unwilling or unable to take control in any meaningful way.

I have taken my time studying the DLC's I've been to so far and crumpling down my experience into the understanding of my details- the characters current opinions on the factions at hand. Elijah, as crazy as he is, wants the NCR gone because of the Helios One incident. Joshua, while a former legate in Caesar's Legion, denounces his former group, Mr. House, and also points out the trouble in the NCR, regardless of his standing. I wanted to side with House but he didn't want to pay me 1250 caps for the platinum chip so i shot him. Then i went to yes man i didn't like his face so i shot him, but then he came back and also everyone hated me so i proceeded with his quest then at some point i was sent to the hoover dam to listen to a guy named Kimball that was doing a speech about taxes or something anyway i shot him, and before you ask yes i also shot elder Mcnamartha and that old lady that i found at Nellis, she tasted awful(i had cannibal perk) i also went to the Great Chads and meet Papa Chad i shot him but this time i was in stealth, so i became the chad of the chads and i told them to go to the most chad place in america WYOMING. Then General Oliver greeted me and we had a civilized conversation about how patrolling the mojave almost makes us wish for a nuclear wint-.....nah just kidding i told yes man to throw him off the fucking dam and that's how the game ended, now you would think that i had bad karma but NO because i used that big iron on my hip😏 to anihilate like 5 or 4 fiends so i ended the game with good karma so I can say that i got the BEST ENDING for Fallout new vegas the first and only time i played trough the whole game. The NCR ending also lets you create alliances with pretty much every other faction in the mojave. You can solve a lot of problems through diplomacy. Not enough men to patrol the roads? The NCR and Brotherhood can make an alliance and the Brotherhood will patrol the roads. Freeside and West side living in poverty? The NCR, the Kings and The Followers of the Apocalypse can form an alliance to provide relief to the people. Gangs raiding everyone? You can banish the Great Khans to a reservation in the middle of nowhere after using them as canon fodder at Hoover Dam. The NCR ending is the best because you can make use of all the other factions and their strengths, and if played this way I think it's damn close to a perfect ending.

World War 2 is a great example; the Nazis had outstanding military technology, highly skilled leadership, a highly motivated and well-organized soldiery, yet they tasted defeat in the end. Why? Because they were terrible diplomats; they made far too many enemies, they gained a reputation as treacherous warmongers, and almost every other world power grew to consider them not merely an inconvenience but an existential threat in time. Other nations, despite having far inferior militaries in many respects, triumphed in the end because they had the capacity to make and keep powerful friends.

It involved giving the Followers of the Apocalypse the platinum chip. That's all they can find, but based on that, it is possible that a truly independent New Vegas would have been possible. Obsidian did the best they could given the time constraint, but they knew about that from day 1. Ideally Bethesda would have been smart, saw that this game had a ton of potential to be GOTY, and just delayed it 3 months towards the holidays despite the contract to clean up bugs (and if they want add more content post release via OTA updates). It would have been a huge win-win on both sides.

In the old Roman Republic, before the Empire, the Republic had an emergency office called the 'Dictator', meaning To Dictate. This Dictator would essentially be given the power of the Senate for a period of time (IE a crisis or Year), and upon completion of their duty they would step down and return power to the Senate. And... it worked. For most of its early history Dictators would come and go to settle disputes, win wars and guide the nation when needed. A famous one was Cincinnatus who was elected Dictator several times and each time stepped down. I know the factions should be independent in "FONV 3:46 of oxhorn's video" is correct but Obsidian only had 18 months which in my opinion,is why they couldn't put their full creativity into the game. I would love to see many better endings in NV but the time gap was way to short to complete such a amazing game. Even as it is now it's still a pretty amazing game. I didn't choose NCR because I looked to history.
Honest harts- The Sorrows had little to no say in what they will do with their home, someone else did just because they were in a higher position.
Dead Money- Sinclair didn't build the casino out of love there was another motive and he kept the money going in one direction- Him self. How can an economy grow if that is happening with the NCR taking over New Vegas with all the money it makes, just going back into it's self.
Old world blues- Just like the Think tank the NCR don't see another world, another nation out side of their own just more land for them to take and experiment with until they are happy with the results.
Lonesome road- Is an answer in it's self one person can make or brake a nation the more NCR expands the more that will suffer when the Two Headed bears hunting grounds are cut off, starving it across it's land.

    • @quinatatyler
      @quinatatyler 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

That really hit me. That's a good perspective on the NCR. They try to take more than what they could handle, similar to the Legion. How can they stabilize New Vegas if they cant even handle their own problems? Everybody makes mistakes but it seems the NCR doesnt want to fix their own. Legion is not a good choice and I dont even think the Courier can run the Mojave with Yes Man. Mr. House seems to be the best option out of all. He has a realistic plan.

    • @joejosephk1773
      @joejosephk1773 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Bleachman what people don't understand is that the Yes Man ending isn't a "Yes Man and Courier rule the Mojave." It's instead a situation where the independent factions control themselves and make decisions for their own people. That's why the Yes Man ending is the best for towns like Goodsprings, because the town of goodsprings and the people living there make their own laws. The Yes Man ending isn't a "Courier and Yes Man govern the Mojave" ending, it's an ending where the boomers, Goodsprings, the Kings, The Khans, Jacobstown, and Primm decide how they deal with problems without facing taxes or Autocrats

  • @BlackOtter9
    @BlackOtter9 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

I find it super interesting that the courier's intervention is literally the key to the fate of Mojave. Without them, there's a really weird rock-paper-scissors situation that doesn't have an obvious winner.
    - Benny stole the chip, yes, but House was aware of that, and is highly likely that with his resourcefulness he would thwart Benny's and Yes Man's plans to take over anyway.
    - On the other hand, without a trusted right-hand-man, House wouldn't be able to secure the securitron army underneath the Fort, nor secure the alliances with some of the Mojave's factions, making him much more vulnerable. It's also possible that he would suffer heavily from Omerta's coup.
    - NCR on its own doesn't stand a chance against the Legion. Sure, they are a proper nation with a standing army and a working economy, but in Mojave they are stretched thin. If the fight was on their turf, they would probably win. But their inefficiency combined with problematic logistics and supply lines in the east are a nightmare, and they have a serious morale problem. Legion is a war machine focused purely on wiping them out.
    - Buuut it's a war machine that's held together by one man with a tumor in his head. Every major character acknowledges that after Caesar's death, it's a matter of months before the legion falls apart, or turns back into warring factions.
So without the courier, no one can really 'win" the Mojave.

I was already leaning to them in my play through. In my eyes I feel that what I learned in American government class best fits ncr. You trade some freedoms for security. As the NCR grows a lot of its problems will be solved. I think that instead of expanding so quickly, focusing and developing close to their base to start and spreading out as their numbers and power grows makes more sense. It may make people more inclined to join up. But overall the NCR seems like the best option just because of what’s offered compared to other options. It’s not perfect but come on, it’s the wasteland wtf is perfect

I think that the point of this conversation is to point out all the flaws of governments that are voted in by the people. There is a flaw to Oxhorn's logic in this video, and that is democracy doesn't protect people from the government, but the ideals behind one does. Rome had plenty of ideals of strong aristocracy protecting the people at the bottom; the enlightened monarchs of Europe began to grant basic freedoms like free speech based off the ideas of Thomas Hobbs. Oxhorn should have argued that the treatment of people inside and outside of the NCR by the NCR is the best out of the four options. The NCR is the only faction where you can negotiate with their opponents: the Kings, the Great Khans, and the Brotherhood of Steel. They don't care if the Khans leave or the Kings are willing to work with NCR or the Brotherhood is willing to help. They are surprised but accept it. Freedom to a much larger extent than the other factions is still important to the NCR.

I like the NCR, and I technically support them. But, it's for that reason that I believe they shouldn't have the Mojave. Their current leadership is weak and corrupt. Their economic and military infrastructure spread thin. They need to taste defeat, gain some introspection into their problems, and then go to work fixing them. Tough love, so to speak. Giving them the Mojave will only make their current problems worse.
House is a genius. He's typically 2 steps ahead of every other faction leader in terms of planning, and his harnessing of the NCR's wealth despite their overwhelming military presence says a lot to his capability. Sure, he may overlook they little guy. But thats OUR job. We can be the one's taking care of them while House works on the bigger picture. His good karma ending even states that he's proud to have a lieutenant with a strong moral compass. Kimball and Oliver also need to be ousted, and Mr. Houses plan involves that as well. Play your cards right and get Chief Hanlon in on that, he starts to rise in the NCR's political scene (someone I'd actually trust in that roll)
Also, his software only failed due to not being the most upgraded version (the one in the platinum chip) and the fact he was fighting off a nuclear barrage.

"Mr. House afforded him/her every luxury at his disposal in the Lucky 38, out of gratitude - and a quiet sense of pride for his choice in lieutenants"
Given that he somewhat strangely chooses to trust only one human being and gives his absolute trust to him, I think it's not hard to assume that Mr. House planned to make the courier his successor when the time comes. IMO, it poses all the benefits of Mr. House's endings alongside the Yes Man ending, ironing out faults in both. Mr. House's mortality becomes far less of an issue, and the Couriers' inexperience could be remedied by closely working with House. IDK, that alone made me choose house over NCR. Once he's kicked the bucket and established security on the strip, it's in the hands of a now more experienced, seasoned Courier (sans the unstable smiling robot.)

8:58 there's a theory that the Courier might Lead the Legion after a Legion Victory after Ceasar Dies. he considered the Courier a Synthesis of himself (Thesis) and the NCR's way of Leading (the antithesis). would have been interesting, to say the least. Legate Lanius, the Right hand has no interest in Leading the Legion and in fact, the Romans used Coinage minted to Tell everyone who the Emperor was. Ceasar in FNV did the Same thing so he could literally pass succession down to the Courier. the Legion doesn't give a screw about tech thus it's diplomatically easier to forge a cooperative alliance with the Brotherhood of Steel. new coinage depicting the Courier could literally finish the Succession from Ceasar. the Legion could even become a Post War Monarchy since the Divine Right from Ceasar as Son of Mars could Translate to the Courier as a potential Grandson of Mars or as Mar's Representative as was commonly the Case in Christian Europe and the Muslim Caliphacy after Rome itself Collapsed into newer local autonomies much like America did in the fallout timeline
given that the Legion is Based on the Roman Empire, the courier could very well Bring Democracy Back to the Legion (Julius Ceasar was himself Pro-democracy and Rome itself went Imperial after the Consequences of Ceasar's Assassination by the Roman Senate who wanted to Save Democracy. it's not too well known that Ceasar Packed the Senate in order to better integrate Gaul, Egypt, and Nubia into Rome itself). Integrating the Brotherhood of Steel as a Technology Branch of Governing new-found technologies and preparing the Military with Virtue over how to Use tech in order to Eventually replace morals to restrain Technology and the New Vegas zone as a Trading Center after Dealing with Yesman and House (if not bring Robco Back to life as a Manufacturer after all why use legionnaires when you could use robots programmed to say "long live Kaiser/Ceasar"). Using NCR aid to Smaller towns to Unite against Raiders and other Hostile Groups
hunting down raiders who refuse assimilation could maintain the Instituted Militarism for a time if they decided to stop attacking external threats. Rome itself didn't always Fight but it weakened itself from the Inside via internal Divisions Inherent in Democracies amongst local and federal leaders. just note that an exception was the Division of Rome into 2 halves by Emperor Theodosius who Ended the 400 year Holocaust against Christians by finally legalizing the Religion, East, and West. this was to Destagnate the Massive Empire as well as Address the Cultural Differences between the Christian Greeks (of the East that has the ability to Boom economically) and the Pagan West (who accused Christians of felling Rome to the final days/very end despite being the parasitic half of the economy. ironic given that the Germanic Refugees from the Hun invasions including the Bulgars were Pagan as well)
Christ literally states his position on Rome when asked by the Pharisees whether or not to pay a Tax named after Ceasar. a verse of the first book in the new testament points this out clear as that when christ reportedly said "Rend onto Ceasar what's Ceasar's". Christ himself might of been a Fan of Ceasar because Crussifixion also took place on March 15th the same day of the month that Ceasar as Assassinated by the Senate on the Ides of March. an avid Christian would have tried to keep Rome together at all costs.
most of his history is obscure because the modern media today really likes to dunk on Christianity much like Oxhorn Dunks on the Legion. A way of Saving Democracy is to prevent the Beurcratization stage. the American System has plenty of Bureaus we know in the form of their Acronyms, CIA, FDC, IRS; history books nickname it the Alphabet soup and they can Operate autonomously of Congress which is oddly unconstitutional since we the people can't vote on it either thus we are at the mercy of stagnant crats with no checks and balances in the Executive, Legislative nor Judiciary Branches. we need a Convention of States, an American Ausgleich (Kaiserriech Reference) to reintegrate all the new bureau editions into checks and balance so we don't destroy ourselves with what essentially are bypasses to checks and balance by the Deep State and Executive Branch.
if the free world falls from it's defensive war into internal aggression against itself never mind the Russian Empire Wannabe stinker over there called Flartamir Putin, then maybe we should fix ourselves before we tell majority of Russian Crimean to remain under the Ukrainian Democratic Empire in exchange for telling the Ukrainians that the Donbass Region will remain under Russian control as a compromise without realizing that taking aside to defend the smaller party would be like causing a World war over the Dixie Confederacy (The South was as much a part of the US as Ukraine was for the Russian Empire since the Keivan Russian Empire that ended with the Great Khanate invasion in the 1200s) which by the way almost happened when President Abe Lincoln arrested British embassies going into the south due to his "no one enters, no one leaves" blockade order.
what I consider messed up is that Lincoln Disabled Democracy (suspended the Constitution for the Whole war when the CSA did it multiple times for select cases before Reactivating their constitution after averting the crisis) for his War and ensured it would assert by Using Migrants off the old world's boat as Cannon Fodder. both Putin and Lincoln Express Symptoms of Autism; Have that Obsessive Desire to Restore their Multi-Ethnic National Unions and probably the only difference; The Free World didn't give a shit about the North denying Diplomacy every time the CSA tried Buying Fort Sumpter (at least 2 attempts). don't bring up slavery until 1863 because that was a Mid War Issue much like the "Free World"'s Coinage was after the Autocracy of the Russian Empire was Knocked off the First World war in Bolshevik Revolution; it was still hypocritical because Siam, Montenegro (practically autocratic despite being constitutionally democratic) and Various bigger Hypocritical Democracies with Colonies not allowed to vote were all in the same New World Order Together called the League of Nations Officially designated after the War (Copy and Paste for WW2 and the UN). I find it ironic that the same Free world that doesn't lend credence to making a Confederacy amongst the Separatist elements in their own country in order to listen to them tell us we must be world police again for the 20th time after telling us why we shouldn't be for the 100th time since our intervention in Iraq over control of Oil; the Real WMD of Desert Storm. Cutting Russian Oil is Destroying our Economy since we didn't Prepare for it. so imagine if every controller of oil who Hates us due to cultural, religious, and civic differences decide to stop selling to our Gangrape against Autocracies; it would be hell for both since they depend on that oil economy to survive; but it would hurt us more than them; given they could buddy up and bribe china for resource assistance if they wanted to cease world trade immediately by blocking the Persian Gulf strait with the same oil not going to the Free World that Hates them for Being Muslim, Autocratic, or simply being institutionally different. even or democratic puppet in Afghanistan hated us and deserted when we left to the Taliban, only the empowered elements who appreciated us actually still miss us who are without coincidence all members of the Female Genders and Male Muslims who forget that Muhhamed's whole Harem of wives was Smarter Academically than he was (don't forget he married a 9-year-old (if not a Minor if someone wants to challenge me on their age) after raping them at some point before then and his whole society tolerated it)
the worst-case scenario would be a total resignation like it was in Kazakstan when the people gave up on their government and protested until the whole government Quit their Jobs voluntarily. then the nearest institutional power not dependent on missing resources can swoop in and establish puppet governments as Russia may or may not have in order to restore order in the region. the Khazaks literally went back to be monkeys (as the meme goes) or rather back to their horses for their needs since the government was no better
Instead of debating over why we should be putting stuff in the water to turn the frogs gay to save the planet from Nature's Misogyny, we should be working on saving ourselves from collapse from catastrophe. last I checked nature didn't care so badly about survival that God himself probably had to put bacteria in human flesh that'll target the brain to prevent humanity from resorting to cannibalism in the long term (science doesn't know why entirely but often theorized to be bacteria targeting the brain of the consumer of human flesh). only humanity is ailed by cannibalism when every other animal species in the animal kingdom would have no qualm or negative effect of even eating their own babies.

    1) Most of the problems of the NCR in the game are people issues not systemic issues. Corruption, incompetency, etc. can be fixed. The Legion has systemic issues with slavery and treatment of women. House has systemic issues because he isn't a perfect God. I like the NCR because it can be fixed.
    2) The NCR is like the Imperium of WH40k. It is it has SO many fronts it has to pay attention to that it is slow to get anything done. If it could simply focus on one problem at a time, it would be easy to solve it.

I personally stand by the independent ending still since its the most head cannon-y ending, in no way does the ending actually state that the courier became the strips new dictator, just mentioning that they ended houses tyranny and the legion's and NCR's fight for control over new vegas, with the securitrons being there to end any violence quickly, from there you can go any different route you think the courier you built will choose, an anarchic one may choose to not upgrade the securitrons thus leading to complete chaos, a more lawful but evil/neutral one may use the army and their complete control over yes man (which is confirmed by J.E. sawyer to use the upgrades to only be able to respond to the couriers orders nothing more) to rule as a new dictator over vegas, and a better natured courier may establish encourage every group to establish councils and have a say over different issues, with the securitrons really only being the police, not to mention adding and upgrading this ending through extra stuff from dlcs such turning the securitron deconstruction site in big mountain into a securitron construction area thing, using the water cleaning technologies, robo-scorpions and teleportation, the sierre madres holograms, the nuclear weapons in lone some road, or more from the base game such as integrating super mutants and ghouls into normal life, basically what im trying to say is that the independent ending opens up opportunities and possibilities for the future of the mojave

And I guess you could change New Vegas to be a democratic nation or to be ruled by councils if you want. After all you own Vegas if you go with the Yes Man.

Freeside doesn't care for Primm or Goodspring and those don't care for each others, despite being literally next to each others. Independent Vegas is not a nation-state: it is collection of settlements in roughly the area that live under the fear of whoever control the securitrons... and once Courier dies, who controls the Securitrons? Yes Man, and only Yes Man.

Yes man is a robot and only takes orders from the courier. He can be programmed to only take orders from an elected council.

What pays the infastructure? Who pays for roads, who pays for patrols? Securitrons are controlled by Yes Man and Yes Mans loyalty is... questionable. Whoever controls Yes Man, controls the securitrons. This is a perfect setup for a dictator to rise and have unquestioning, unstoppable army.
And then what? What to do when Courier dies? Do you have some guarantee to make sure that whoever is elected next won't decide to impose taxes? He has the army. Who is going to stop him? If a man from Primm decides that Freeside needs to pay taxes for being too lawless, who is going to stop him? He has the securitrons. He has the army.

One of the big things that sets up the NCR is being more moral than the legion is that in the ending slides it is stated that a good courier is out of place for the Legion while an evil courier faces heavy criticism from the NCR.
While we are told that yes man making himself more assertive means he only obeys the courier, the courier isn’t going to be around forever. Yes man being in mortal means he will be in charge of Vegas eventually.

Oh, people are righteous and just and will uphold laws because they dont want to be shot too? Hahahahahahahaha. This has been tried 1000 of times in human history and has NEVER, not even once, worked on even small sized societies.
If a law is not being enforced or breaking it has no consequence, it is not a law, it is a recommendation.
In the case of New Vegas, what keeps the strong or armed from abusing their power? What keeps a mercenary from going to lake mead, destroying the pumps and demanding toll everytime someone needs water and shooting those who refuse? What keeps robbers, thiefs, rapists, murders or bandits in check? Their own consciousness?
NCR takes care of basic human needs, like safety, food and water. Often times not as best as they should, but they got at least a plan, logistics and infrastructure - something you dont have in the anarchist society. The courier, House and NCR changed a lot - check the area on the east of vegas. Farms, water, secured roads, travellers and merchants.

@@darthnox9991 Dictatorships last as long, as there rules live. Once there gone, the people fight of Reputation, in the Government.
Democracys last longer, but are venable to internal strife, and infighting. But they, allow people to be free, and live how they choose. You live how you like, and can't control others on how they live.

House's statement trying to justify his dictatorship is stupid. Fallout's Great War had almost nothing to do with the government forms of China and the US. They were fighting over resources.

I could imagine "California Dreamin'" being the NCR national anthem.
