On advantage of shuttle trains is that you can run a precise number of trains on each shuttle to cover passenger usage for that section - with the intercity method you end up running trains which may be very low usage for parts of the route.
Intercity lines are high speed mainlines but with stops at towns or cities depending on the route but squirrels rail system doesn't even come close to being a InterCity mainline
Personally speaking, I wouldn't be upgrading roads just because of the amount of private traffic on them. The roads with my busses and trucks on 100% I would upgrade but not those that I'm not using. I feel it creates competition with my services. I also like starting really early and getting a rail network established between as many cities as possible before the private transport really starts to compete!
When it comes to upgrding stations with new platforms but keeping old victorian terminal buildings, I think that is more realistic to true life. Manchester Piccadilly and London St Pancras have 1890s or earlier buildings but modern platforms for example. Also it shows how the stations have grown and thier 1850s heritage. I love that look...new is not always better. =)
Squirrel I know for the shuttle services the first multiple unit trains are a good option but given that you are absolutely spiting money, why not use the newer ones? Using ancient, 60+ years old, trains seems really odd, and we also would like to see some newer trains as well. Maybe some ICE's on the inter city lines as we've seen the other electric one already reaches 200 easily on the line? Absolutely loving the series!
Ice and TGV trains take ages to get a decend speed. They are build for speed, but that made comprimise in traction. It might be verry fast top speed wise, they do take their sweet time getting to those speeds. Its like with express steam locos: they have good top speeds but struggle to get the train started out of the station.
37:50 hurrah! finally, a solution for getting trains onto your track network which doesn't involve building yet another depot! but in all honesty, seeing elegant solutions like this makes the video and the series much more enjoyable
I've never played this game so tell me to shut up if necessary. But with the scale you are at, would it make sense to create distribution centres for different goods. Like all of your fuel refineries deliver their fuel to the same place, and then that place distributes it to whatever city needs it. You could have one for each different commodity and then you don't need to worry about individual factories supplying the right number of cities and how those cities grow. They all deliver to the same place and then that stuff gets distributed around. I'm not sure if the game mechanics would work that way but in my head it works.
There's a problem with that strategy, in the fact that with a resource center it should be placed somewhere in the middle of all the cities that require that type of resource, thus increasing the average distance of the run and overall cost of the whole ordeal, further more you are putting a lot of stress on one single factory, there's multiple factories on the map for a reason and if you want say "Why not bring all the resources of all factories to one place?" welp why add so much complexity and planning into a hub instead of making single runs. The game rarely encourages the hub strategy because of the way resources/cities are spawned. He might do it in the future if it's cost effective, not going to lie it's lovely to see an efficient hub in this game.
@@olino.3917 didn't Squirrel say earlier in the series that you get paid more for transporting stuff further? That's why he went for factories further away a few times. And yes I meant moving stuff from multiple factories. It can be used as a boost. I do exactly that when my trainline can't handle any more trains but the processing plant still runs out of raw materials. It helps greatly but do keep in mind that the raw material output also has a limit.
Squirrel I beg that you implement some trains with two locos. I don't know why I want to see it, but I do! I don't even know if it's possible, but if it is I'll be thoroughly impressed!! Other than that, amazing series! Keep it up
Multiple locos and distributed power are allowed in TF2. I had a 1000+ meters coal and iron ore train with 3 “Crocodile” locos; 2 at either end and 1 right in the middle.
What you could also do with bus traffic is, you only upgrade streets with a bus lane where you want your bus to drive and place bus stops along those roads. That way you force your bus to use the streets with the bus lane and have kind of a bus lane street system in place. Alternatively you can force the bus to use a certain street with a way point. The others streets in a city you could keep without a bus lane so cars can use 2 roads in 1 direction Wich gives the 2 options for lanes at an intersection instead of 1 and should improve traffic flow over time. Not much, because traffic flow is weird but it does help and looks good as a side effect.
At 20 minutes he has setup the first Intercity line, but it only has stops on the northward leg. (Will he correct this before the end of the video?) He has lost all the passengers who want to go south to cities other than the sothmost end city. This is why when I setup Intercity trains I always keep one or two of the city-to-city shuttles for the stops along the line. This doesn't congest if all the trains on the line can travel at the same maximum speed.
Hey Squirrel. First I want to say that I've been really enjoying this series and it has given me a lot of new insights to the game, thanks so much for that. But.... yes there it is :P..... That pinning trick you did when figuring out where to put buslanes can be done with all lines at once. I open up the line statistics (F2) and pin that. Then you have all the lines visible at once and can upgrade or change everything you need in one go.
The micro management part is fun. Now is when you don't have to worry about the big picture stuff so much and you can have a bit of fun. Time to maximise city growth etc.
Hi Loving the series. I think I would create the new intercity line first; transfer all the trains to it; upgrade all the trains to the same type. Only then remove the now redundant shuttle lines. Also, you only 'need' diamonds at the ends not in the middle.
With a shuttle you can tailor the capacity to the route. So if you have 100 passengers for A to B and 200 for B to C, you can run the A to B train at half the capacity of the B to C. If you have an A B C route then you need to run a full capacity train A B C, but only half will be used on the A B leg.
The thing about the whole "passenger stays on and keeps their seat" thing is, that's public transport for you, if there's not enough capacity, add capacity, I know UK rail operators tend to not do that (cos more carriages means less profit cos they have to buy/rent them), but that's just how intercity travel works, even the shuttle method leaves people behind if there's not enough seats for them...
Why not circuit the Mablethorpe- Bradford via Thatcham? You've already established that Thatcham has sizeable amount going down towards Bradford and Mablethorpe has both towards Bradford and Romsey.
@Squirrel: A section of road running north and south in Thatcham just south of Queens Street at stop #3 did not get upgraded. The larger buildings on both sides are hiding it. There's no way my brain could keep up with all this to play myself but I do enjoy watching someone else. 😁

Where do you live that you've not be able to board a train due to being too crowded? I've never come across that situation in the city I used to live, and it's the largest city, by population, in my country. Buses yes, but never trains. I don't know if it's because we have 8 car double deck trains, that run every 15 min during peak times, or something else. Nothing wrong with Victorian stations in 2000, or even 2021. We have plenty of Victorian stations that still have that old world charm, and very little by way of actual upgrades. Newer toilets, adn waiting rooms, if they have them, and modern signage, ticketing, etc, but that's about it.
squirrel watching your episode now, you have set your intercity line up wrong. You haven't got it stopping at all stations in both directions. It only goes Romsey to Bradford the straight through romsey (without stopping) to loughton, then on to Mablethorpe, then straight through loughton (without stopping) back to romsey. Surely the efficient way would be romsey-bradford-romsey-loughton-mablethorpe-loughton. this will then stop at every station.

It's frustrating being late to the series and seeing the constant demolishing of buildings when widening 2 way roads to have bus lanes when setting up one way systems should enable a bus lane and other traffic lane on the same road without the need for the widening that leads to buildings being demolished (if the one way systems work like IRL, in Europe anyway). Or 2 lane roads could be kept as 2 way but with bus (and truck) only roads, 1 lane each way with no private vehicle access.
2 Years to late but One thing that could have helped out was extending the Romsey to Tacham line to go to Bradfort. So it might have taken some more pax that wanted to go from Romsey to Bradfort
I go with the shuttle train service on my maps too. I have had problems like you said people keeping seats on the train and then passengers just pile up at one station. Sure putting more trains on that service will slowly fix that problem but some jumps are unprofitable in this method thus more trains just drains more money. The same can be said for the buses in the city. I use to have two loops through the city from the trains station, one clockwise and one counter-clockwise. I would still get the problem of the last stop in those loops being FULL all the time due to people keeping a seat. Shuttle service to and from a few of those looks fixed the problem at little cost.
the good thing is IRL you can sit on the train roof in bradford, its a local cultural thing, buts its also not a traditional thing. hahahahahahahahahaha
Sure, shuttles make more money. But it's not realistic. It's pretty much just an exploit and the only big fault in this series. Shuttles goes from small cities to the hubs where the intercity takes over. Shuttles should never go between the larger cities.

I’ve been wondering; you built an oil line in one of the earlier episodes using steam trains, and I haven’t seen it since. I don’t know if I just missed you upgrading it, or if the line is still running as if it’s 1927.
He mentioned at the end that he upgraded it off camera
Anyone saw the man with the Beard on the left side? 13:22
I do enjoy this series and will be definitely sorry when it ends. I have looked at your link for the map mod but to be honest, I cannot find the name of the map. I have clicked the steam link that takes me to your list of mods but not the map. Am I missing something! Please can you let me have the actual name of the map and the link to download it?
Have you any plans to start another map in the TF series? I would certainly welcome it should you decide to finish with this one.
The map is generated from a bunch of parameters instead of by name. (See "Map details: Temperate climate, -1 Hills, +2 Water, 0 Forest, Seed: 0VjcYjYb, Very Large, 1:1" in the video description)
Suggestion: Why don’t you make a express line for trains?
You do realize that multiple units are called such because you can attach multiple units at once right?
Loughton-Thatcham direct?
Can you put passengers and cargo on the same train?
bro if i say a train colored purple i would legit die on the spot
lovely.
Why do you have to have a diamond when the two tracks are next to each other? Can you not have a diamond crossing a gap ?
Hello, how about you try a map o Huge size with high and lots of mountains? It must be much challenging than just a flat map.
How much RAM are we cooking here?
Yes!!!!
Im sorry but....... can you replace the steam trains. And if you want to still have a steam train you can always make a scenec one for pasengers. Bdw can you implement some romanian trains you need to add them via the workshop
Would you do me a personal favour? Stop using pink/purple LoL xDDD
Y not use latest buses thatcham to Ramsey instead of shuttles
