I was really happy to see, FOR ONCE in these snow / traffic videos, someone actually doing something proactive to assist - the guy standing in the intersection at the bottom of the hill signaling to oncoming vehicles to stop when another vehicle was sliding down the hill out of control.
Back in the 80’s I had my salon in the Oak Hills Mall. It snowed so much that day and night. No one was able to drive up Eola. It was a parking lot!! Of course the parking lot around the mall was full!! I didn’t even make it home. Watching this brings back memories! Thanks✌️

i lived in OR / WA for years......i just had regular economy compact cars with winter tires......i drove all over, all weather, never wrecked......had snow, ice, black ice, sleet, etc....
I try to avoid routes that involve hills on snowy days. Luckily, I don't have any, really, going to & from work. It also helps to drop your vehicle into low gear when going down a hill. Slows you immensely & you don't have to use your brakes as much. That's when you'll slide the most.
My hill is steeper by the looks. I have no problem going down in second with light brake pressure. Going up is a different story, took about all the i could to keep it from pulling off the road. I need snows, but im not stick yet.
Mashing the brakes just makes it worse and it's what most people do out of panic, If you push the brakes up to the point where the tires are just about to skid and no further and apply and back off as needed you will have good braking and the best traction for this type of situation.
Yeah abs is not very affective in my opinion, I myself have never liked them but if it woks for some that's good, I would much rather not even have abs, i like being the one in control of my vehicle
That's crazy guys, but if that's your opinion.. abs not only helps when braking in general but also keeps the car from loosing control and going sideways. (some wheels locking up while others don't)
On the west coast Snow is rare so it is not worth it to buy winter tires unless you go to Ski hills , along The Interstate 5 corridor which includes Salem to Portland to Seattle to Vancouver BC Canada we have mild winters ., Snow tires are not mandatory in Vancouver Canada for Example but if you go into the mountains an hour East of Vancouver Snow Tires are Law ., I am sure it is the same with Portland Oregon and Seattle
@@squamishfish Maybe it's just me ... but if folks choose NOT to buy snow/winter tires because snow in their area is "rare"... then when it is icy/snowy they SHOULD NOT be out driving. They should take public transit or walk because they are NOT prepared, and are a danger to themselves and others.

I think it would of been better if the cars crashed. You have to think about it from the video side sometimes and not the people that stuff hapens to. Like if someone was drowning.
Maybe try driving zig zag would help? Right to left to right to left? I would love this amount of snow.. never tested vehicle out yet.. sounds really close to the microphone..
if you must drive and going up of the road . stop and pot the Gear lever after [ D] and driving slow you see your car moving very nice and you can going up from the hill ..i have experience ..

@@WhiteSupreme Not in my experience. I drive a lot in the Austrian Alps in winter and replacing my All Season tyres with Continental Winter Contact TS85” tyres made a massive difference. I feel totally confident and safe in situations which were previously a white-knuckle ride, ready to lose traction at any moment.

Put it in the lowest gear, get a run and I promise you that you can pull that hill. I’ve never failed on any hills and curves. That’s all we have in my area. I’ve taken them up even sideways. I can get up any hill.

Bah. Most of the drivers, even the ones going uphill,had no problem at all. Most likely, all the ones that slid/crashed did not use their brakes gently. For the ones that slid all the way down, the driver needed to get off the brakes immediately and get the wheels rolling without a slide. Then gentle brake application will control the speed. That is not necessarily true on a much steeper hill, but that section of Eola is leveler than many parking lots.
i remember these days when if i didn’t get to work i couldn’t pay my bills so like these poor folks i had to try and it was a shame , we had no vacations days or sick days but we had a multi millionaire boss who wouldn’t pay you if you didn’t get there

It's common sense to have snow tires in snow...just like boots in the snow...you don't see people wearing sandles in the snow...think about the other drivers that fit there cars for the right driving conditions..save up and buy good tires for the season...

The best car I ever had in the snow was a 93 Ford Taurus Limited Edition there is so much weight over the front axle and it was front wheel drive

The vehicles seem to be making it UP the hill with little difficulty,
therefore, the road DOWN the hill couldn't be that icy.
Having lived in the northeast but now in Florida, these videos are some of my favorites to watch.
I try to avoid routes that involve hills on snowy days. Luckily, I don't have any, really, going to & from work. It also helps to drop your vehicle into low gear when going down a hill. Slows you immensely & you don't have to use your brakes as much. That's when you'll slide the most.
set it in 4 low, 2nd gear, let it idle down the hill. How hard is it to not touch the brakes
Or better yet, if your vehicle comes equipped with it, use "hill descent."

That is why you get a 4x4 with low range it will keep you at a very slow speed. And winter tires are a good option
When you slide it means your tires have lost traction with the road. So spinning your tires as fast as they can go won’t do you no good.
Mashing the brakes just makes it worse and it's what most people do out of panic, If you push the brakes up to the point where the tires are just about to skid and no further and apply and back off as needed you will have good braking and the best traction for this type of situation.

Downshifting into a low gear can and usually does cause the tires to slip and it’s just as bad as locking the wheels up
