What does it do to connection when we choose polite instead of kind? It introduces a barrier. Polite can be a ritual that counterintuitively keeps us safe. It often moves us away from the other, and diminishes our capacity for authentic communication. Kind, on the other hand, is an important investment in connection with the other person. Prioritizing relationship over etiquette.
This is an awesome reminder for our clients, partners and colleagues and also helpful in any context! Like all the best things in this world, it takes work. True kindness is harder than being polite. And it is so worth the effort in the end.
There are still times to simply be polite - let it be a choice and not a default.
