- The spring transfer portal window is now closed, and despite persistent rumors, all five members of Ohio State's quarterback room chose to remain Buckeyes.
So what made Will Howard, Devin Brown, Lincoln Kienholz, Julian Sayin, and Air Noland all choose to stay in Columbus, and which of them is most likely to win the starting job this fall?
Tony Gerdeman of BuckeyeHuddle.com joins host Tom Orr to discuss those questions and more.

The only QB battle in Columbus is for Will Howard's backup. This is a run for the "natty." Howard has 40+ starts. He doesn't need to be a Troy Smith. He needs to manage the game and make good use of his weapons.
Thatâs exactly right.
Pretty certain I've been to the exact same PA Turnpike food court/convenience store building described in your NoonBurgerKing story - ð.
Lol mccord's name is banished to the buckeye huddle shadow realm ð
Awesome as always thanks guys go bucks
Saw a ton of ChipKelly off. at Ucla. Howard only needs to mostly complete seam passes and make that ez throw on the wheel-route play tOSU will run to the Buckeyes' offensive left side (about 24 yards downfield). Even w/5th yr DTR at qb, Kelly, while in Westwood, rarely called deep-shot pass plays (and Ucla had some future-NFL WRs or slot guys that were fast af). Imo Howard will be devastatingly effective on RPOs. In '23, frankly, Howard didn't pass well on intermediate throws (at least not vs Mizzou, for example).
If Lincoln Keyhole thinks he's going to win the job next year I guess he is praying that Julian transfers. The Buckeyes better start saving their money to make sure he doesn't transfer.
Julian Sayin will start next year. Still no DB 33 lol.
Lincoln will be at Minnesota in a year or so.

These videos on the QB question need to STOP !!! There is no way in the world they pay a 6th year Big12 conference championship quarterback and have him forgo the NFL draft to transfer to Ohio State just to sit behind a quarterback that hasnât proven he can stay healthy long enough to last more than 3 series of downs. Will Howard will be our starting quarterback anyone that thinks differently is trying to sell you a line of B. S. Go Bucks !!!
To play devil's advocate here. There is no way that Ohio State will let the fact that Howard is a transfer and getting paid, let's say 1 Mil in NIL dictate playing a player that isn't the best player. IF Howard is looking much worse that Brown they will start Brown, not starting the best player is how you lose a locker room. All these guys came back to win and if they can see the best player is not playing there will be problems. All that being said yes it will probably be Howard, transfer status and NIL do give him the inside track.
So you think if DB should clearly out perform WH in Fall camp that Day will start WH anyway? Interesting.
@@W00D3Ys If Devin Brown is better than Will Howard we are in big trouble. All I e heard is how great Brown is in practice for the last 2 years. From what my own eyes tell me when he sets foot in a game he is jittery and hasnât shown me any kind of leadership skills to date. I donât think he is that good. Not to mention he breaks when touched maybe above his #33 on the back of his jersey he should change his name from Brown to Fragile ? That might help. If he doesnât get hurt between now and late Aug. Howard will be our starter. Mark my words Beelzebub.
@@billytuesday4492 thatâs not going to happen in a million years. Not with the experience and championship caliber play so far from Howard that Brown âwho has proven Jack squatâ except for supposedly practice will somehow gain the leadership and experience to take over for Howard who you must think is going to curl up and suck his thumb ? Hmmm interesting
â@@buckeyetater7540I don't agree that we are in trouble if Brown gets the start. However I do agree with you and think Howard is better, possibly much better, we will see. I was just commenting that Howard's NIL and transfer status do not guarantee him the job nor should it. Honestly I think we are heading for a Ryan Day special where the starter isn't decided until week 2 or 3. Not that I want that it's just where I think things are heading
I think the young guys see it as where else can they be developed by guys like ryan and and chip kelly. Even if they never play at OSU they are investing in being developed this year and will likely battle for the spot next year and if they donât win next year they will probably transfer and try to be that next Joe burrow.
More importantly => who will be the QB that comes in and takes over (ie Cardale Jones) and leads us to our next Natty victory?
Everyone wanna be the next Cardale Jones
It's interesting listening to this episode: without saying it out loud Tony and Tom both agree that the two QB's they wouldn't have been surprised if they transferred were Devin Brown and Air Nolan. They didn't say that, I was just reading between the lines. Personally, I want Devin Brown to win the QB battle because if he does that means he's definitely better than Will Howard. I view Will Howard as the baseline QB; Howard will start unless someone is better than him. I want someone better than Will Howard to start and the only one that can possibly do that is Devin Brown. And if no one can do that, I will be happy with Will Howard as our starting QB. The popular wisdom is that OSU doesn't bring in Will Howard to be a back-up. Actually that's not exactly right: You bring in Will Howard so that if none of the QB's develop into a starter, you've still have Will Howard.
Complete and utter nonsense. What you just said was just plain silly.
@@buckeyetater7540 Yep, just plain silly; but you can't say why cause .......
@@DSelwyn21 if you really want I can tell u why but I donât think you do. Just Sayin
Let me start by asking you why you want someone to be better than Howard ? U want OSU to waste a bunch of money in hopes a championship caliber QB with 5 years experience suddenly starts to suck ?
@@buckeyetater7540 The money wasted is irrelevant. If Brown is better than Howard then he should start. If he's not better then Howard, I'm happy with Howard starting. Howard is the default; why not desire someone better. I know Brown can run; I know he has a better arm than Howard. He doesn't have the experience, but maybe he has the higher ceiling for 2024. And if the coaches believe this after Fall camp, then I'm happy with Brown as the starter.
Canât wait until DB33 proves everyone wrong. Bookmark it.
Yea when he goes to LSU and wins every game and the Heisman then you can bookmark it. Heâs never going to start as a Buckeye unless someone else gets injured.
Big Dik Bill Howard. Thatâs who.
Quinn Evers?
I'm with all the comments here. THERE IS NO QB COMPETITION. Stop already. The bum that couldn't beat out mccord and looked like crap and got hurt everytime he played last year isn't starting over Howard. JUST STOP.
Kyle McCord?
I like your podcast but these QB topics are annoyingâĶ by August Will H will startâĶ. Period!
