I was here! OMW to visit at 62yrs old! That concert was the bomb, we all came in the night before they were pushing the fence they knocked it over and ducking yes run with the crowd! No kiding if you didn't stay up and run you would have been trampled and this is the group I wanted to see that day! 😍 you too 👶
Thanks to Carlos Santata. Mr. TOM COSTER. GRAHAM LEAR. PETE ESCOVEDO. ARMANDO PERASSA. RAUL RECCO. DAVID BROWN. JOSE CHEPITO AREAS. GREGG ROLLEY. MAYTRYA MICHAEL SHRIEVE. GREGG ROLE Y. and all the Generals i did not recall. You are the best!! Long live the Emperor. DEVADIP CARLOS SANTANA.
Hope Santana's set gets an official dvd release someday soon! That'd rule. Greg Walker is one of the best lead singers in Santana history. Definitely in the top 5.
Wow!..The California Jam 2... This was a key moment in my musical history. I was there along with what I was told were 350,000 other souls, yet the acoustics were superb throughout the whole place. When Santana came out it was around 4 PM that Saturday. Each band had a 2 hour slot, and the concert began at 10 AM. The crowd was ready and the place went wild when Santana started playing right after Heart... Wow, I still get chills down my spine as I remember this event as if it was yesterday... My friends and I decided to leave after Aerosmith finished playing at around 10 PM, as the concert still had a couple of more acts to go... We were all rocked out, but happy as heck... We all knew we were part of rock'n'roll history...
We stayed for Mahogany Rush after Aerosmith. So many people cleared out, it was easy to get up by the stage. They were superb. Left before Rubicon, however.
@@charleswilliams8368 Charles, I really appreciate your tidbit of info. I was left wondering how it was with Mahogany Rush, since we left right after Aerosmith. As I mentioned earlier, we were all rocked out in my group...
How is Aerosmith? The one time I saw them about a year before this they kind of sucked they were never really a great live band. I don’t know why too sloppy.
There are many great versions of Santana playing this song, but to have Raul Rekow, Armando Peraza, Graham Lear, and PETER ESCOVEDO on stage together…. it’s just 🔥!!!
WHAT A GREAT GROUP OF PERCUSSION IST !Graham Lear is a monster drummer ! Just amazing performance! Was at their show in Cincinnati mid 70s ! I will never forget it!
@@jamesmack3314 not taking away anything from Shrieve, the Areas, Caravello, Shrieve section during the early years was amazing. But this lineup I think was a bit above them. Maybe it’s my bias but Escovedo is just so good and he fit in so well with the others.
@@iconoclastic12007 yes I definitely concur with you nothing quite like Santana percussion no matter who they have you know it’s gonna be top-notch although I’m certainly partial to the early lineup, but what I was really saying was that certainly looks like Michael Shreve in the video but people are saying it’s not him
Great classic concert &footage of Greg walker Tom Castor Graham Lear, Armando Perez, Raul Recow ,Carlos Santana looks like the US festival?great concert...Ray Patel
I HAVE THIS DVD. GRAHAM LEAR HAS ALWAYS BEEN IN A LEAGUE ALL OF HIS OWN. 3 ALBUMS WITH GINO VANNELLI, TONS WITH SANTANA. 2 OF THE HARDEST DRUM CHAIRS TO FILL IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY. DAVID M. WAS A SEVERELY UNDER RATED BASS PLAYER. FOR FELICIA, 💖💖💖
That's not Michael Shrieve. The drummer for the band during this era was Graham Lear. He has a resemblance to Shrieve, but that's not him. In fact, I think Shrieve was working with Steve Winwood and S'tomu Yamashita in the Go project at this time.
I was in the Corp. and was fucking there. That don't make me a supper star but if anyone can get night coverage you will see flares popping up on each side of the stage. That was me and my Marine brother Foreman just popping it off.
Coke Escovedo The late great, Uncle of Sheila E., Brother of Pete and Alejandro, is on Timbales. I was a few rows from the stage, after camping overnight.
I was at this concert! Me and a girlfriend where sitting right there.... Coming into the gate they were searching people. I had a sheet of acid and hash that I got through. When we walked past the large dumptster they were throwing all the drugs in, a 1/4 pound of Thai Sticks hit me on the head and I scooped it up. Went nice with everything else.
Well, I do prefer Chepito (at least with Santana) and luckily I saw him with Santana a few times, but I also saw Pete a few times and he is no slouch. I have to admit though, that I did see and hear him playing with more fire than he does on here. BTW, as a side note (not that it matters either way for this conversation), but Pete's daughter is Sheila E. and his younger brother (Coke Escovedo) played on Santana III (co-writing No One To Depend On) and in a lot of live Santana gigs in the early 70s.
after 2 weeks of tripping in Baja we went to this concert it was great Frank Marino closed the show around midnight never forget it we sneaked in

Not including Carlos's original Woodstock Lineup this is the best Band Carlos has ever put together. Including Greg Walker on vocals.
Goddamn that percussion team is out of this world! The spirit and joy is off the charts.
The Whole Band is Excellent
wow what a kick ass band!!! love you carlos!

What an euphoria !!!! Amazing !!!!
This is the best Jam Band ever! Bar none.
Greg Walker was the best vocalist Santana ever had. Great assist from Dave Mason on 'Soul Sacrifice'.
My best lineup! They're ALL aboard !!! And I still own my Yamaha and boogie because of this era 🤘🏿
These dudes play with so much more passion than many of today’s rockers. It’s crazy
These guys burnt down. The California Jam.... whew!

I was there, on the right from the stage. lol
Great energy, great players, thanks for posting the video.

Love the whole band, have to agree Greg Walker was one of my favorite singers, and To Coster was an amazing at keyboards.

I NEEDED this!
my favorite era of Santana.. that Yamaha..

Shout out to the Latin percussion, Pete Escovedo (Sheila E's father), banging those timbales! The late greats Armando Peraza and Raul Rekow on Congas!
You can't possibly leave out Graham Lear, he was unmistakably integral to that super talented wall of sound!
@@quicksite yes graham lear is a great drummer
I was there, front aand just to the left (Sweney side)

Back in the early 70s Graham Lear was in a forgotten band called Natural Gas.
Viva Santana... chingon 😎😎😎
Coke Escovedo The late great, Uncle of Sheila E., Brother of Pete and Alejandro, is on Timbales. I was a few rows from the stage, after camping overnight.
My Mistake It was Pete, Sheila's Dad. He looked a lot like Brother Coke.
I was there..high on two hits n Honey Oil..and a Lid.
I was at Cal Jam 1. What a day. I think.

37 years ago today i still remember the smell of angel dust when santana played and cholos coming out of the woodwork
+Robert Gutglueck But did you get laid at the concert?
Awesome! Carlos Santana my favourite vegan guitarist!
My all time favorite.
Inspiring!

Nobody does.
That's coz Chepito Areas is a monster....

I think the drummer is actually Simon Phillips
No, Michael Shrieve.
GRAHAM LEAR

Very messy performance, specially soul sacrifice. Its by no means bad, but its Santana we are talking about, looks just like a very loud concert.
Aguirre Cosmico youre full.of shit , they burnt the joint down! Completely killed it..
.dumbass.
coked out dude wow
Esta es la peor version de Soul Sacrifice; que escuche, aun con Dave Mason,* que como iba a perder la oportunidad de tocar con Carlos,
*Traffic.
Jose
Chepito Areas would eat that fake timbalero for lunch...
+77musica That "fake" timbalero is none other than Pete Escovedo. Look him up.
