    I think Angel is not only scared of other vampires getting the ring. Its about him becoming Angelus again and wearing the ring. Thats why he destroyed it.

      That and that he looses his ability to see what he has to do. If someone lives a life without problems, they mostly cant see or understand the problems of others. So even if he never turns back to Angelus, he doesnt want to loose the ability so see and feel the pain of others. He just wants to help he helpless.

      Oh yeah your right , if Angelus ever got his hands on the ring then so many people would be in danger including Buffy, like Angelus killed an untold amount of people in his first 145 years of existence before he got his soul and this was before he had the ring, imagine what Angelus could do with that ring and being invincible and completely unkillable 😳

      As reasons go, this has to be right at the top of the list. Sadly, left unmentioned on the show. (I actually came to the comments to make this point)

      Yes, I always thought destroying the ring was about what he could do if he ever lost his soul again.

      Yeah, he couldn't trust himself with it. It also could make him a constant target for others who want the ring. It's too hard to hold on to for the one who has it. And he feels it's too much of a cheat when it comes to earning his redemption.

    Eliminating the ring eliminates the problem of people coming after it. Every vampire that hears Angel has it will come after him and the ones he loves. Not just that but Angel is seeking redemption and is still determined to punish himself. The ring effectively absolves him of his suffering and he doesn't feel like he deserves that yet.

    I remember seeing this episode for the first time I got so hyped and excited when I saw that Spike and Oz was in this episode, Angel and Oz are really alike in some ways both the cool laid back silent type and tbh I don't think Angel and Oz talked to each other much on Buffy so this is probably their first true conversation they've probably had with each other one on one and of course Spike is here being a huge pain in Angel's back like a annoying younger brother 😂😂

    In the previous episode of Buffy, Oz said "I have a gig in LA, I can swing by."
    And Willow told Xander, "She's giving the ring to Angel. Don't make a fuss."
    So as watchers, we should have seen Oz coming, and we know that Buffy gave the ring to Oz since he offered.

    This episode is one of my favorites from Angel season 1. I love the "what's going to happen? How will they resolve this?" and the scariness of the torturer. I love Spike showing up (and being hilarious). I love Oz showing up to help. And I love the humor amidst the drama and angst. It's such an entertaining mix.
    "I was ready to give it all up. The ring, your mom... how is your mom, by the way?" LOL!

      The torturer is one if the best one episode vamps espicually since the who 'he likes children' is used quite a bit at times to show evil someone is but the actor pulls it off.

    Angel didn't want to wear the ring in the beginning because he didn't feel "worthy" enough to get this opportunity after all the things he did as Angelus. Angel is suffering because of the soul he has. He wants to atone for his crimes as the one he is now and not with any advances he might get through the ring. When he destroyed it it was with the thought in his mind that it would be even worse if Angelus might get the ring some day when he would keep it.

    Oz smashing through in his van and holding up a crossbow... LOVE IT every time!
    (It was so unexpected! I forgot about him after he dropped off the ring - I must have figured he'd gone back to Sunnydale and was done with the episode. So I love the surprise of him being part of the plan.)

  • @jayjordan9582
    @jayjordan9582 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I actually think Angel was 100% right, there are NO good vampires, Angel being an exception solely cause of his soul. Every vampire would come for that ring, and a lot of people would die just from their feeding alone, added to that is the fact that if Angel lost his soul it would lead to Angelus being indestructible. You know, aside from someone just taking it off your finger. And people forget Angel didn't lose his soul because of having sex with Buffy, he lost his soul after, laying in bed with the girl he's head over heels in love with just gave him that feeling of perfect happiness. However, Faith & the mayor hired that guy or demon in season 3 of Buffy to steal Angel's soul, so there's other ways for that to happen, so it's a good call getting rid of the ring. If he keeps it, Angel wins comfort & safety while endangering everyone quite a bit in numerous ways, he destroys it & it makes things safer for everyone, no real choice there. As for Spike, he's funny & fun, but still a vampire who drains, kills, and tortures people. Though, I do enjoy him too.

    • @Buffy8Fan
      @Buffy8Fan ปีที่แล้ว +6

      People also tend to forget that it wasn't happiness directly. But it helps that people in-universe don't know that. It was that happiness made him forget to feel guilty. Enyos says: "...one moment where the soul that we restored no longer plagues his thoughts, and that soul is taken from him." The quote starts off with, "One moment of true happiness, of contentment..." but that just means that is how his soul can be stripped when he feels no more guilt, not that it is the only way. The rest of the quote is Enyos clarifying himself. Happiness is still the easiest course to forgetting to feel guilt, though. Which is why the shortcut works for longtime fans, but when people talk directly about how it works it makes little sense. Also why talking about it feels like rambling. Ugh! Sorry if I did. Wasn't meant to come off that way.

      Yes and it doesn't seem like a hard thing to remove it or cut fingers, hand off. Then Angel will be exposed in the daylight if other creatures go after him.

    Since you're way ahead on Patreon, I gotta point at the irony of this:
    Marcus: “He’s known love.”
    Spike: “Yeah, with a Slayer no less. How's that for perversion?"
    Oh, Spike. Shut up? 🤣🤣🤣

    1, He cant keep the ring because there would no longer be a show, Angel would be like superman without kryptonite weakness.....where would the stories come from when you know Angel is invincible in every encounter?
    2, Ring could be pickpocketed/stolen/dropped etc.....and you would have an unstoppable vampire again....and what if Angel some how lost his soul again while wearing that ring? Angelus with his weaknesses is hard enough, him whiteout those weaknesses?.....

    Angel still can't have sex with Buffy and if he did and became Angelus again that would Angelus with the gem effectively making the worst vampire in history completely indestructible.

    The Gem of Amara Ring is from BTVS S4 episode. This is why it really make sense to watch both shows in the correct watch order as they are both linked with crossover plots, characters and storylines. Many felt it was wrong of Angel to destroy the ring, but of course it could have fallen into evil hands again. Some great little comedy moments again, especially with Doyle and Cordelia. Great to see Spike back again as he is a pivotal character in The Buffyverse. Angel is a much darker show, but its very best episodes match anything from BTVS. Here it is interesting seeing Spike chasing The Gem of Amara, as Buffy wants Angel to have it to make him invincible. Angel even though he has tasted 'daylight' knows that the ring could fall into the wrong hands again and so must destroy it, again making him the most tragic character in The Buffyverse. Great to see Oz crossover as well as Spike, and the wonderfully awkward meeting again of Oz and Cordelia.

    Seth is 5'3" (I thought he was 5'5"}, Charisma 5'7" (I thought 5'9"), but she's in heels. People in Hollywood are frequently smaller than they look on screen.
    And Marcus is one memorably creepy vamp.
    About the ring: on the one hand, invulnerable Angel; on the other hand, his argument; on the gripping hand, whoever has the gem is a target for every vamp around. It might be better to just remove the temptation.

    It's such a hard decision, but I admire Angel for it. Especially because - look how easily he got it away from Torturer Guy. Just pulled it off his finger. Which means someone with bad intentions could do the same to Angel, and end up with the ring, and do terrible things and not be able to be stopped. In the wrong hands, it would be a terrible thing. So... even though Angel could use it for himself, which would be amazing, ultimately it's better for it to be destroyed.

    Great reaction D! I get why he decided to not wear the ring, and also why he destroyed it as some have mentioned that the possibility of if he became Angelus for whatever reason and he had the ring, also there's the possibility what while he can't be killed while wearing the ring, he's not impervious to getting knocked out if an enemy managed to surprise him and then take the ring for themselves... I personally would've kept it in safe storage for whenever it would be needed but then an enemy could target the people Angel cares for if he did that..... It essentially eliminates a "cheat code" and at least keeps the vampire lore of being powerful but still having weaknesses, unlike other vamp properties like Twilight and the Vamp Diaries.... good stuff that gets you a CTU, and now I'm off to watch your Buffy reaction you posted today as well!

    He's susceptible to anyone or everyone going after him taking it off him or cutting his fingers, hand off in the daylight. Just like when Spike & the torturer guy wore it. Too risky.

  • @suddenlyfrogs1906
    @suddenlyfrogs1906 ปีที่แล้ว

    We have established that there are Magics out there that could remove his soul, The Mayor knew this but Angel was lucky enough that the guy used, was a friend of Giles. So there's a chance, whatever it is, high or low that eventually Angel might encounter one of these people and Angelus could return.
    Personally, Buffy should have destroyed the ring and sent a fake to Angel, as it was pretty obvious that Spike was heading out there to recover it. But then less of an episode would have detrimental to the season lol.

    The reason he doesn't bang the ring on right away is that if it works then he'll want to go back to Buffy & that way leads only to moments of perfect happiness, which in turns leads to bloody death. Of course Angel WANTS to be happy, what's the point of even existing if you can't have a bit of joy right ? But if he gets TOO happy then bad things happen & it's kind of on him to make sure it doesn't go down like that. He literally has to tale precautions against excess happiness & the notion of Angelus with the ring is too horrible to contemplate.

  • @ceceliam9014
    @ceceliam9014 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think there are good reasons to destroy it, basically the target on his back and the danger of another vampire getting that power. Or if Angelus having that power. But they didn't really communicate that in a way that made sense, the readings said didn't really add up. It just seemed like self punishment.

  • @pieceofgosa
    @pieceofgosa ปีที่แล้ว

    You can't make the main protagonist of an action show completely un-killable. All dramatic tension would be gone as Angel would easily defeat every enemy in about 5 minutes. The entire show would become about the bloody ring, as the writers would have to invent increasingly contrived reasons for Angel to take the ring off for most of the second act before getting it back at the climax & powering up to kick ass like he's a f*cking Power Ranger...

  • @ThEmB0nEz
    @ThEmB0nEz ปีที่แล้ว

    The ring was just going to be a hassle and put Angel in constant danger because Spike and other Vamps would try to always go after it and put Angel and his friends in danger. Also look how easy Angel took the ring off the torturer, one mess up in the sun and Angel is toast. Now with the ring destroyed no one will be coming for Angel & friends or have that power. Angel is already immortal he doesn't need the ring to help people. All Spike had to do was kidnap Angel again take the ring off Angel and kill him. The only reason Angel was still alive is because he didn't wear the ring. I agree 100% with Angel destroying the ring. Angel just got abducted this episode there's no guarantee Angel keeps the ring with him forever.

  • @hardybryan
    @hardybryan ปีที่แล้ว +3

    If he kept the ring, every other episode would be about some vampire getting the ring or him becoming Angelus with the ring. It would become what the show was about and that's boring. I'd have been fine with them trying for like 2 episodes before this decision was made, but whatever.

  • @coldservings

    I am quite disappointed with Spike in this episode. He's usually so good at reading people (and vampires) that his getting blindsided by his hired torturer stealing the Gem of Amara is kind of lame for him. And why hire a vampire to torture the location of the gem from Angel? Were there no demons who could have done the task, or even humans? The gem would be useless to them, much less temptation, And if he used a human? Well, he could have the human for dinner afterwards, a double win. So, yeah, Spike is handled badly in this episode.
    Angel's justification for destroying the gem was a weak one, IMO. Staying in the dark to cover the nighttime threats? Yeah, I can see that, but having the gem available for use when needed, could be handy. Still, I can sort of see it if he doesn't trust himself not to turn his back on his mission if he has it.

  • @KS-xk2so

    There's lots of decent story reasons for him to destroy the ring but ultimately.... a show where the main character is unkillable has ZERO tension and is boring as hell... he'd just steamroll every villain lol

    The ring would make Angel OP. Remove pretty much all the threat and make the show really boring.
