Thanks for the video, was about to tackle the same repair the same way(just the thermostat) you saved me some frustration. FYI if you hit the thermostat with a heat gun it will open up at about 200°
When you buy the thermostat it comes with a cardboard tube in the box. You slide the cardboard tube over the end of the thermostat push in and twist. To install the new one slide same cardboard tube over new thermostat and push and twist till locked into place. Simple not as bad as it seems.
Ours definitely didn't come with any tube. Unfortunately. And we heated it. That also didn't help at all. The mechanic we talked to worked for Chevrolet prior to being a mechanic. He advised us to buy the entire housing because this is a common problem with this thermostat on this engine in particular. Had nothing but problems out of this engine. Happy it's now gone.

Thx man! I'm about to install the housing and thermostat on my buddys malibu. Glad I watched this first. I found it for $80 on rockauto also.
Glad it helped ya out. We had nothing but trouble out of this engine. So glad it's gone now.
Where is the temperature sensor ?
So how much coolant did you lose when you took the housing off? Gotta do the same job soon just afraid I'm gonna lose a ton of coolant

Were you pushing on the center of the thermostat or on the tabs?Pushing on tabs was easy.

Put the thermostat in a cup of boiling hot 🔥 water the water the thermostat opens then with some plyer put it in the housing
We did. It didn't help at all unfortunately. Multiple tries and it didn't help.
$300 quote thermostat at the shop
$180 quote at my shop. I'll just do it myself. lol
