    Lovely, well made film. I remember Princess Alice from as far back as the 1960s. She was born with 3 surnames, married late for those days and had 2 miscarriages. You can't help but feel for her that when her husband was so debilitated their son Prince William of Gloucester was killed in a flying accident. I remember that. The Duke of Buccleuch is still the largest landowner in Scotland and owner of several beautiful castles and obviously the Royal Family is extremely wealthy, yet I'd forgotten the Gloucesters gave the reading for giving up their Norfolk home as financial, which was disarmingly honest. She was almost 103 at the end. Thank you for this film.

    Most interesting information about the life and tragedy Princess Alice endured. Tragedy struck twice with the loss of her eldest son William, then the stroke of her beloved husband , followed later by a second stroke which was to be fatal. I really felt for this lovely lady, who came from a privileged background, and sadly lost her father a few weeks before her wedding.
    What this story denotes is the fact that in life, while you may be gifted in one respect, it does not give one everything. She is now at peace and reunited with her beloved family. RIP.🙏🙏

    I’m happy to have figured out why the Duchess of Gloucester was called “Princess Alice,” when she was not the daughter of a king or queen regnant, or of a Prince of the Blood. It was by courtesy of Queen Elizabeth II, at Alice’s request in her old age. I guess the press dubbed her “Princess Alice” after she married Prince William, made Duke of Gloucester at their marriage, but she was never a Princess, as her sister-in-law Marina was. Which is why Diana’s official title when she was married was, “The Princess of Wales,” and after the divorce, “Diana, Princess of Wales,” and only called “Princess Diana” by the press and other ignorants. And also explains why Katherine (Kent), Camilla, Sarah, Catherine, and Meghan aren’t royal princesses, and why Princess Alexandra and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenia are. I do think it strange, I admit, that Duchess Camilla can be Queen Camilla, when she couldn’t (with all the rest) be a Princess first, even if she was legally Princess of Wales bc she was married to the POW. What a bunch of silly minutiae!

      So after her son and daughter in law became the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, her title was princess. Ok. It just seemed bizarre because Kate and Meghan aren't referred to as princess and they're duchesses as well.

    • @samanthaallen7556
      @samanthaallen7556 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@rachelgreen4510 that's because their husbands are still alive. If the wife survives the husband, you can't have 2 duchess's with the same title. Plus I think she didnt want to be known as the dowager Duchess. It's the same when the Queens mother became a widow. She should of been known as the dowager queen.
      Meghan and kate are princesses but not in their own right. They are not born princesses like Anne, Charlotte and Beatrice. They are princess William of wales and princess Henry of wales. That dosent sound so good. If Meghan survives Harry she will become a dowager Duchess. Archie's wife will be the new Duchess. But royal Dukedoms only last 2 generations. So Archie's children will be viscounts and ladys.

      She asked permisson to Queen Elizabeth to be styled “Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester” to avoid confusion with her daughter in law Birgitta now HRH The Duchess of Gloucester and to avoid being called the old fashion way “HRH The Dowager Duchess of Gloucester.” BTW remember that the law is very clear, all women married to a British Prince became inmidiatly a Princess of the United Kingdom no matter how she is adressed, remeber that women adquire the feminine version of the husband noble main title. So Katharine Woresly, Birgitte Van Deurs, Marie Christine von Reibnitz, Camilla Shand, Sophie Rhys Jones, Catherine Middleton and Meghan Markle are legally and oficially Princesses of the United Kingdom. In the hipotetical case of non noble titles in their husbands they were be caleed and addressed by this form : Katharine Woresly will be HRH Princess Edward of Kent , Birgitte Van Deurs will be HRH Princess Richard of Gloucester, Camilla Shand will be HRH The Princess Charles, Sophie Rhys Jones will be HRH The Princess Edward, Catherine Middleton will be HRH Princess William of Wales and Meghan Markle will be HRH Princess Henry of Wales. Today there is only one princess that is called by this form of title and is Baroness Marie Christine von Reibnitz wife of HRH Prince Michael of Kent, she is titled HRH Princess Michael of Kent.
      When The Duke of Kent and The Duke of Gloucester pass away in the future and their wives are still alive they will have three options for being re titled, maybe they will be HRH Princess Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester or HRH Birgitte, Duchess of Gloucester or HRH The Dowager Duchess of Gloucester, the same case will be for The Duchess of Kent, she maybe be HRH Princess Katharine, Duchess of Kent, or HRH Katharine, Duchess of Kent or HRH The Dowager Duchess of Kent.
      Titles in the Unided Kingdom are very complicated hahaahahahahah
      take care Mike
