Writing the paper is pretty much a guarantee. For basic science paper, usually the standard is producing a figure. For clinical papers, there are authorship requirement by the publishing journal. However, it ultimately comes down to the principle investigator. Some do very mimanal and get included. Some do a lot, but end up not getting on. The important thing to communicate is that telling your boss one of your goals is to get your name on a paper at the very start.
