Hey Sean can you give me a possible way out for moskava in that situation Was there a way to save a ship that's so badly hit from being sunk Or was there a way to do something once they detect incoming missile
The lesson of the Moskva is that subsonic sea-skimmers are actually more dangerous than higher flying supersonic missiles. The intercept to kill envelope on a supersonic missile is actually much larger, and the advance warning ends up being similar due to the horizon. There is a reason why the US Navy still loves the Harpoon.
Nah both are equally dangerous and have their own roles. A single supersonic hit causes significantly more damage which will require multiple subsonic hits due to the sheer kinetic energy. Also supersonic is much more difficult to defeat through last ditch defences like CIWS. If subsonic is more effective than supersonic there won't be a race for hypersonic
@@rameshb794 supersonic is actually fairly easily defeatable, literally just armor your ship. Yes the kinetic energy is immense, however the missile itself is not equipped with a penetrative tip, as doing so would compromise payload significantly. If you had 12in of belt armor, you'd end up with a missile disassembling itself between 6-10in within the belt, protecting the ship. Remember, modern missiles are designed to be used against unarmored modern warships. Something like a battleship from the WWII era would pose something of a challenge to them due to size and general survivability. Seeing that simulation, you should have clearly seen that belt armor would have saved Moskova.
Hey Growling, I see you have misunderstood the situation. The Moskva didn't sink. It is currently running a Special Underwater Operation to Pacify the Black Sea.
Saturation of the radar system is exactly why the Aegis system (USN) was developed. Not saying it is impossible to saturate - just that it would literally takes hundreds of potential targets, and there are filters they can use to not waste capacity on. So yes, I would say it was a combination of old weapons technology, (lack of ) trained personnel, and weather conditions (along with the fact that even subsonic ASM's flying at 15m (lower on the attack run) are a very difficult target). Material condition and layout of the Moskva also played a part. A missile hit to an exposed SAM missile magazine would not be a good thing - this could make doing damage control almost impossible.
I think all those defensive systems are pure propaganda from all nations, the Iraqi airforce manage to hit an american frigate with 1 single exocet... same for the brits

It was an unplanned transformation from surface vessel to undersea asset that the Kremlin failed to alert the media with enough time to publish in the latest volume of Jane’s Fighting Ships 😁
Actually, what happened is that the Ukrainians sent some munitions to the ship via express mail. The problem was that the cargo also contained detonators, that activated due to rough handling at the receiving end. This caused the munitions to detonate, and cause a major fire on board the Moskva.
As is everyone else, I'm surprised that the Moskva was successfully attacked in this manner and eventually sunk. Wouldn't she have support ships around her to help defend against an attack? She was too easily overrun by such a low-tech form of attack. I would have expected a better defense from their Flag ship.

But this simulation makes perfect sense...first you overwhelme the fire control systems with decoys and then you sneak in a few anti ship missles to kill it...well done. This is a tactic that in this case would work like a champ.
Actually the radar wasn't very good in reality. It was over 50 years old radar technology (from the 1970's). It was never designed to detect or defend against low flying missiles. So of course it was totally vulnerable in modern times against modern anti-ship missiles..

Man... you made your mission too hard, GS. A maintenance report, done 14 days before the invasion and surfaced now, listed the 3 layered missile defense as inoperable when she was hit. The S-300 could work, but turning on the radar interferred with all communication abord. Only one of the last resort defenses was operational and the damage control systems were lacking in number or actually locked away, because a lot of the stuff got often stolen. Heck, it even goes deeper than that. Engines were past their maximum operating hours, emergency lights and signals not working... So all in all... this ship was destined to sink. You could have just flown in, just like that...!
More than interesting. The quality of the graphics, and the ability so set up different scenarios, not just dog fights, really surprises and impresses.
One possible scenario, but quite uncertain if it was so. Another scenario is that nothing was going on and all was quiet when the missiles came. And Moskva did not defend itself because the radar operators were quite tired and did not pay attention to what was going on and when they realized there was an incoming missile it was already too late.
No GsH 630 CIWS ? Thought the Slava cruiser had 6 of them to be the last line of defense. Also noticed that there were no OSA SAM systems launching. The SU-25 RWS should have lit up like a Christmas tree on his approach.
Well, Moskva was the "aircraft carrier killer", as they say, so its radar can see only something that is not smaller than a carrier strike group, obviously :) Or like a city, that is not maneuvring. Seems like any russian weapon is only good in fighting the civilians (if they don't use a tractor).

Like all Russian military hardware the Moskva was built to last. After two days at the bottom of the Black Sea, the bathtub in the captain's cabin still has water in it.
first the ship was distracted and driven mad by a Turkish drone. the ship suddenly had many fictional threats. and then the Ukrainian missiles hit.🇹🇷🇺🇦
Exactly. Turkish, USA, ROM and some BLG NATO drones+planes caused Moskva to sink basically. To engage them means WW3, so, lesson learned I think. I don't think Russians will make the same mistake again. Video does NOT show what actually happened.
Well, there are pics of the Moskva listing, and smoking heavily through the engine funnels. But one thing is clear. None of the S-300's were fired, and from what i could see, it missed one of it's 2 portside AK630's. It surely wasn't hit by a "Joint strike Missile", like the Trondheim from the "Ukrainian video" that went viral. That was an 880 lbs warhead. And is a smaller ship. The neptune land based Missile had only 320lbs warheads And a ship almost twice the size of the Trondheim.
The Neptune ground launched anti-ship missiles that hit the Moskva don't have that large of a payload however it's not IF you hit the ship it's WHERE you hit the ship. A fire aboard a ship at sea is one of the most deadliest things that can happen. Even if the initial impacts didn't hit the ammunition magazines initially, if a fire is set aboard and it can't be controlled it pretty much seals the fate of the ship very quickly. The sailors would have precious little time to abandon ship after the fire was declared out of control.
It's hilarious seeing people critique the Russians and their equipment here. Like "they were untrained, incompetent, their equipment wasn't working, etc..." I hate to break it to all of you, but that's just life at sea. The British lost 4 warships to Argentinian aircraft. The US let 2 Exocets get through to hit the Stark. In recent years our warships have been fired on both in the Suez Canal and off the coast of Yemen. Honestly, for most air defense systems to actually work, you have to be expecting the attack. And even then things like the CIWS will often jam, or a sensor will miss an incoming threat. Basically, this war had been going on for over 40 days at the time, so I'm not surprised that they weren't alert to a possible threat. This isn't incompetence, it's just reality. Let's hope that NATO fleets aren't tested by war in the near future, because some of you have unrealistic expectations and will be disappointed.
I had a couple of friends in the navy in the late 70's early 80's and they used to say we always marveled at how many weapon systems they seemed to cram onto their ships compared to our ships, guns missiles radars etc etc, but the reality is its more bling than function.
My dad was in the navy during those two decades (and into the 90’s) and he said the joke was the Russian ships have double the armaments because half won’t work.
Nice video to show defence saturation. I know the Neptune missiles are sub-sonic sea skimmers so I'm guessing this is what DCS has for simulation at that range. Still impressive though.
There are a lot of questions here: What he did there, why the flagship was without cover, why there was a NATO scout on the ship before the explosion. Almost the entire crew was evacuated, during a missile strike, I think there were serious crew losses.
@@AreeyaKKC H.I Sutton has some evidence suggesting the number that survived is at least 260 incl the captain, assuming injured crew didnt attend, you can extrapolate and assume 50-100 fatalities and the rest injured in the fire. The fatalities go up if the fire was in the midships AAM area, people wrongly assume the deck launchers are more dangerous to a ship, but those AAM's cooking off would be far harder to control and more lethal to the crew

It would only take a small fire a little while being unnoticed to cause a serious problem. Lastly do not compare Russian materials and people with American it isn't the same thing
Do you have any proofs that it was Ukrainian missile? No one exceps Ukrainian goverment confirmed that it was missile attack. Even U.S. intelligence.
Moskva was promoted from surface warfare ship to submarine!
i actually see propagation shockwaves coming from the explosion at 5:50. thats awesome!
An unexpected but brilliant video from you - keen to see more like this!!

Remember the 1943 Philadelphia experiment with the destroyer Eldridge? It seems that Russian scientists have done the impossible, and the Moskva cruiser is on combat duty a kilometer from Washington, it is not visible ... A successful experiment.
This was very cool; appreciate you putting this together.
The moskva was not hit by missiles.
She simply experienced a spontaneous and unscheduled kinetic disassembly.
😁
It was an unplanned transformation from surface vessel to undersea asset that the Kremlin failed to alert the media with enough time to publish in the latest volume of Jane’s Fighting Ships 😁
Actually, what happened is that the Ukrainians sent some munitions to the ship via express mail. The problem was that the cargo also contained detonators, that activated due to rough handling at the receiving end. This caused the munitions to detonate, and cause a major fire on board the Moskva.
Nice job GS, as usual! 👍👍
Very interesting! Yes, I've read reports that drones were used exensoivlely as an harassment team
Very Cool! Happy New Year mate!
As is everyone else, I'm surprised that the Moskva was successfully attacked in this manner and eventually sunk. Wouldn't she have support ships around her to help defend against an attack? She was too easily overrun by such a low-tech form of attack. I would have expected a better defense from their Flag ship.
As it goes with this entire conflict, Russia hasn't displayed the most competent military strategy
I think Russia has made several miscalculations , I think they underestimated the Ukrainian sentiment about a Russian "special operation" (invasion) , i think they underestimated the Ukrainian military capability and willingness to fight. I think they underestimated the Worlds reaction and the amount of weapons that they would supply. So I suspect that the Russians didn't think they would be vulnerable at sea.

The exact same miscalculated/ overconfident/underestimated mindset towards an adversary which took place at Taranto, Italy circa November 1940; as well as, at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii circa December 1941.🤦♂️

Overconfidence by the Russian navy and underestimating the Ukrainians.
Nice video. Shared it with a few people who were wondering how it was done. A video in this case is worth a thousand words.
remember the "Philadelphia experiment" in 1943... Russian scientists did it. "Moscow" 3 km from Washington with full ammunition, he is invisible
You see, the ship was participating in a “special combustion operations”.
Really Really GOOD Video !! I like your take "of the possible" scenarios that we are fed these days via ALL the possible news feeds. I love your videos and the fun you have with Longshot !! Blessings !!
I watched another you tubers version of how the moskva was hit and it simply didn't make alot of sense because of the defensive capability of this particular war ship is a particularly good at killing stuff.
@@xAlexTobiasxB so basically a sitting duck. This may have been a deliberate test to see the tactical capability before rolling out a modern cruiser.
@@rinzler9775 yeah pretty much.

Sweet simulation! Nicely done, Growling Sidewinder.
Man... you made your mission too hard, GS.
I can already tell this is gonna be good
Great content, as always!
And so Moskva was awarded the Order of the Stark and promoted to the rank of Submarine.
One possible scenario, but quite uncertain if it was so. Another scenario is that nothing was going on and all was quiet when the missiles came. And Moskva did not defend itself because the radar operators were quite tired and did not pay attention to what was going on and when they realized there was an incoming missile it was already too late.
My only regret is that we apparently don't have any video of the Moskva going up like a fireworks display.
I would venture to say someone somewhere has it, and eventually it may come out.
Due to very poor weather conditions, its very unlikely we'll see any video ever. There's only some satellite images that seems to look trustworthy.
@@pouk_9 The photo that's on the internet doesn't show poor weather before it went down after being abandoned.

Hey, this was intriguing! Thank you!
No GsH 630 CIWS ? Thought the Slava cruiser had 6 of them to be the last line of defense. Also noticed that there were no OSA SAM systems launching. The SU-25 RWS should have lit up like a Christmas tree on his approach.
May have been a over saturation of the radar system, didn't even see it coming till it was too late. Otherwise I agree with you.
*should*
Great production and content, super impressed. 👌
Well, Moskva was the "aircraft carrier killer", as they say, so its radar can see only something that is not smaller than a carrier strike group, obviously :) Or like a city, that is not maneuvring. Seems like any russian weapon is only good in fighting the civilians (if they don't use a tractor).

What a good froggy 🐸 Mission well done, Growling
This is virtually no different from the sinking of the HMS Sheffield 40 yrs ago by an exocet subsonic missile. Defense systems against antiship missiles look good on paper but in actual combat conditions they arent effective. The age of large surface warships especially the aircraft carrier may be over.
Nonsense.

Like all Russian military hardware the Moskva was built to last. After two days at the bottom of the Black Sea, the bathtub in the captain's cabin still has water in it.
I doubt that, it was Russian !
Another exciting video! Yeyy
first the ship was distracted and driven mad by a Turkish drone. the ship suddenly had many fictional threats. and then the Ukrainian missiles hit.🇹🇷🇺🇦
Exactly. Turkish, USA, ROM and some BLG NATO drones+planes caused Moskva to sink basically. To engage them means WW3, so, lesson learned I think. I don't think Russians will make the same mistake again.
Video does NOT show what actually happened.
Superb ! Thanks for the video . Great computer simulation.
The neptune land based Missile had only 320lbs warheads And a ship almost twice the size of the Trondheim.
remember the "Philadelphia experiment" in 1943... Russian scientists did it. "Moscow" 3 km from Washington with full ammunition, he is invisible
Wow, fabulous reconstruction, thanks!
So it was you who sank the moskva!
Moskva didn't sink, they just reclassified it as a submarine.
Also explains ; why most of the Russian sailors would not have survived - contrary to Russian reports...
remember the "Philadelphia experiment" in 1943... Russian scientists did it. "Moscow" 3 km from Washington with full ammunition, he is invisible

The Moskva was not sunk!
It successfully completed a submerge below water and do not resurface special operation.

When are we all just going to admit that Russian equipment, technology, and ability to keep that technology serviced are way over-hyped?
Even their nukes could be overhyped as well.
Nicely done great tactics
It's hilarious seeing people critique the Russians and their equipment here. Like "they were untrained, incompetent, their equipment wasn't working, etc..."
I hate to break it to all of you, but that's just life at sea.
‘Precautionary’ flares…..riiiiiight.
That was fucking badass!
It was not sunk. It was upgraded to be a submarine.

The Ukrainians have learned very well. They played the Russians like a master violinist plays a violin.
There are a lot of questions here: What he did there, why the flagship was without cover, why there was a NATO scout on the ship before the explosion. Almost the entire crew was evacuated, during a missile strike, I think there were serious crew losses.
No way all the crew survived. I’m guessing more that 50% losses
