    Danny, I've enjoyed your videos and support you for many reasons. Here are some:
    1. You have a good mix of both showing the subject matter and talking to the camera.
    2. You take what the Bible says seriously.
    3. You are respectful of traditions but won't let them unduly influence your conclusions.
    4. You are open to taking wherever the evidence leads you.
    5. You enjoy your work and it shows.
    Thank you!

    Very interesting! Now will anyone be doing any digging of this road you are walking? Imagine what might be found! I wish I was younger and could do things differently, I think archaeology would be a fascinating job. I like your theory about Jesus going that way not to be recognized but yet after his resurrection, even his apostles didn't recognize him so who knows if he needed to be careful? Thank you for another awesome video. PS- How does one bury people in those "garage" structures?

    I hate being contrary but sometimes it is needed. 160 stadia is about 18.5 miles. You can walk 18.5 miles in one day, if you are a healthy hiker, but the text says that they returned to Jerusalem that same day. First, they were with the disciples, holed up with them when the women came back telling them that the tomb was empty. Then some time after that, they left for Emmaus, and as they walked, they talked about what had happened, the Jesus joins them and they talk, non-stop the entire way. Now when you are walking and taking, you are not walking briskly with a determined pace, so at best they were moving at a pace of a half a mile to one mile per hour, and they get to Emmaus just before dark. After they get to their destination and eat, Jesus disappears and that same hour (verse 33) they return to Jerusalem with a brisk walk and make it back before the disciples had gone to sleep for the night and then Jesus appears to them a moment later.
    So, 60 stadia has to be correct, even though that one copy mistakenly added 100 stadia. That same copy, if I am not mistaken also has a lot of other controversial changes. So, there is a reason why Luke prophetically put a specific mileage in his account of Emmaus, probably so that it would not be confused with another town with almost the same name. It could be that a copiest, who had no scruples with making Scripture fit what he thought was contradictory information, may have known about the other Amaus and not the first Emmaus and may have made what he thought was a more accurate copy, but I guarantee you, that if you study the translations and their subsequent copies,which were made in other languages before that supposedly oldest manuscript, you will find that they say sixty and not 160! So, by sticking to 60 stadia, as you follow a possible Roman road, you will find the right village, maybe even on that very road you showed in your last episode, no matter the lack of memorial evidence existing today from that period or later. There are a limited amount of roads which left Jerusalem which had stadia markers, beginning at Jerusalem, so narrowing a village down to 60 stadia, is, by itself, all the evidence you need as there is little chance that two different roads would have both have a town exactly at the 60 stadia markers, if you knew the location of stadia marker 0 or 1 or any marker from 1-60. Every minor town, branching off from the main travel routes, would probably not be marked with stadia markers. Josephus confirms this 60 stadia distance as well, and he not only was an eye witness historian, but, he had a tendency to double check the known facts for himself. Emmaus means "warm baths" apparently in Greek, so maybe it had warm springs at one time or it was called Emmaus, because it led the way to the spot where there were warm springs, (which could also have been brought that way by aqueduct at some point). Whether or not this part of the puzzle is confirmed or not, is still secondary to the mileage, but I suspect that this also may be confirmed one day by some new discovery.

    • @danny.the.digger
      @danny.the.digger  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great review! Still I think Emmaus-Nicopolis is the right location. Of all the 5-6 candidates it is the only one that may have had thermal springs. I regret not including a video of the amazingly preserved Roman bath near the church at Emmaus Nicopolis when vlogging that chapter.
