- Saudan Couloir Ski Race Extreme in [1988] on Blackcomb Mountain in Whistler, British Columbia.
The Saudan Couloir Ski Race Extreme sent skiers and snowboarders into “2,500 vertical feet of thigh burning hell”, down one of the top 10 steepest inbound runs in the world*. Starting in 1987, the race ran for 16 mad years, creating heroes and fuelling après-ski stories
I raced it in 1990 on my 203cm Rossignol 4S Kevlar skis ( they were great boards for the time ). They were literally bulletproof!! I made it down in one piece and placed 13th in my age group, which I was pleased with since I was bib 220. It was a very foggy day and would've been easier with a luge as the ruts were HUGE!!! One of the best experiences I've had though. Thinking of going for it again in 2022!!!
Wish I could find my old VHS tape as TSN actually covered the race and I taped it. Would be some good vintage footage.
So happy they're bringing the race back for 2018!
omg that brings back some memories. It was horrible weather and a massive effort in course setting, snow clearing, delays and frayed nerves over three days. Somehow race director Bob Fuller still had a sense of humour at the end, and after the last racer finished, Bob radios the (by now catatonic and completely out of patience) course setter Rick Brown and says "Ok Rick, are you ready to reset for second runs?"
I think that's Rick in the Blackcomb uniform at 4:48-9.
Awesome
0:40 omg, look at those sticks!
