I figured this was something very few people have seen, so it's nice to know someone appreciates it! My Dad, Grandad and Great Grandad, all drilled and dressed tools in the oil fields-Dad and I often wonder what the past generations would have thought of this machine! I'll try to get a video of Dad and I doing it "the hard way"next spring.

    Fascinating stuff.
As a 12 year old kid I watched a father and son doing this with a coke forge and sledge hammer, 6" bits for a water drilling rig. Being a kid, i didn't have the patience to wach the whole process, but I certainly knew it was a job I didn't want to have to do when I grew up.
Thanks for showing us something that is slowly disappearing.

i am aware this is a old post but just saw it and sure brings back memories. I was a 3rd generation driller ran a lot of different rigs in my time but always dressed those bits the hard way. it doesn't take long as a driller to learn you need to be proficient both left and right handed with those heavy sledges. it's a true shame cable tools is almost a lost art. so very few left of us that has the knowledge and skill to still drill the deep wells for oil and gas. they are some still capable and work shallow water rigs or cable tools would be clear gone thanks to new rotary technology. soon even the shallow work will give way with the new advancements

Excellent. I have a couple old Erie Bucyrus machines that I use to service oil wells with. I love to operate them and really enjoyed watching your video. Thank you so much for posting it. If you guys ever drill any with old cable tool rigs I'd love to see you make a series of video's on it.

Thats the easy way, I did all the bit dressing with a 16 lb sledge hammer when I worked on a 36L 45 years ago.

Really cool. Of course I drill with a TH60. My Boss has a 1948 I believe its a speed star? He would get a kick out of this, would probably get an Idea in his head to do this to his bits.
