I'm British and our æ and e sounds are more differentiated. I didn't realise how similar they are in American English! It must be hard for English learners.
Be aware, though, of that there's inconsistency between phonetic [...] and phonemic /.../ transcription The guy is teaching [ɛ] vs [æ] British /e/ is [ɛ] But British /æ/ can be [æ] or [ɑ] The distinction between the first two is really not so clear; but the third is easy to tell appart - it's a back vowel
Damn you and your American English! I'm from Sydney and the difference between those two sounds in our accent is a lot greater. My girlfriend is Vietnamese and pronounces these sounds in an American way.. she got most of them on the initial quiz, I got most wrong. I wanted to show her what I meant with this video and thought it was funny she did much better than me at hearing the difference in your pronunciation I've got a rather soft big city accent - just thought it'd be fun to mention.

English pronunciation is very difficult for many non-native speakers of the language but not for me, well pronouncing it correctly is hard to some extent at least. English phonology is truly unique, wonderful and challenging for all English learners around the world. I love this language but I've come across some pronunciation and spelling difficulties and I always try my best to better speak, understand and communicate with English-speaking people whatever their accent as well as their way of speaking. The vowel sounds of the video are a little hard to pronounce and I continue to improve my pronunciation and I'm getting better at speaking more confidently and clearly. Trying to speak English like a native speaker is not necessary I think, I have good pronunciation with very few mistakes. Native speakers often make mistakes when speaking rapidly or casually, right? Minute 6:38 Question. In British English there are 12 vowels, which are the monopthongs. I thought that the monopthongs in British and American English were the same. But looking at this image, without considering the diphthongs, I see that in American English there is no "Short O" or "Long Schwa" sound, which in British English are in the words "Hot" and "Bird" respectively. So in American English there are only 10 monophthongs? Or are there 12 monophthongs which would be the 10 in the image, plus the broken vowels / ɚ / and /ɛr/? Not in all cases, because in natural speech the length of vowels can be changed a bit, but in some cases, it is very important to listen to the length of each sound. /ae/ as in bat is a bit longer than for /E/ as in bet.

@@SoundsAmerican I speak Mandarin Chinese natively. In Mandarin we don't have so much similar vowel sounds like /æ/ and /aɪ/. For me personally, I can tell their difference if words containing/æ/ and /aɪ/ are pronounced slowly. But once I listen to a lecture/video with a normal or faster speed, the difference becomes very subtle and I am not able to distinguish them.

+Andrew Jackson The length of a vowel sound is governed by a Vowel Length rule. A vowel is longer before a voiced consonant that it's before a voiceless one. So, the /æ/ sound in "bat" and the /ɛ/ in "bet" are of the same length.

@@SoundsAmerican I speak Mandarin Chinese natively. In Mandarin we don't have so much similar vowel sounds like /æ/ and /aɪ/. For me personally, I can tell their difference if words containing/æ/ and /aɪ/ are pronounced slowly. But once I listen to a lecture/video with a normal or faster speed, the difference becomes very subtle and I am not able to distinguish them.
