DUDE! That is a monster! I had to watch but I don't think I'm up to wrestling clay that is half my weight! Lol Love the Italian bat idea. I have some old boogered bats that I can't use. My bull dog will be disappointed. He was hoping they would be reused as his frisbee.
Brilliant video, as always, Guy. I found it enlightening to see you centering in stages. I've been heaving away at one big lump of clay, so seeing your technique will make my life easier! Maybe one day I'll get up to two bags, though one is enough for the time being! Mark.
Yes this was the second pot of the day . I had done a clip on the pot before it but had not lit the shoot well till near the end and so filmed the second pot . The bat was a bit small . It worked ok but I am used to a larger bat for this pot . Its good to see this kind of fixing cause the student sees we alll have to work in the moment !! All the best , Guy
Hello . No I make the original hole as Im begining the opening . This means I can feel the depth to the bat making the thickness of the floor very easy to assess . The bottom is more then 1/8 th inch and less then 1/4 . All the best , Guy
I found myself tensing my own muscles are you were moving that clay Guy! Unfortunately I can't count this as centering 50 pounds...49 okay...but not 50 :) I can imagine beginning students rushing to their teachers asking to center 50 pounds. The teachers' expressions would be priceless. I can't wait for the 2nd clip.
@johnnysatty As the old timers said . Let the wheel do the work .. If something hurts the next day you are working to hard .. It may be that after 30 tons a year I have built up a tolerance but I dont get stiff in my hands or upper body .If anything it feels exhilarating .. . My legs are stiff at night from standing all day but my wife says I should stretch more .. All the best , Guy
Hello Mark at least one day a week try a third more then you think you can do for a pot or two and then go back to your known largest pot wieght you can control. You will find that what you thought was your top wieght now feels like a managable amount of clay . This makes for some recycling but its worth the trouble . All the best and happy throwing , Guy
@mehmeh55 . Hello . I use red clay to make red flowerpots and white clay to make white flowerpots . Mostly the red pots are of a type you might call "Cottage " garden and English work pots , the white clay ;"high design and "regency" .. All the best , Guy
I must say after this videos centering 25lbs is a breeze, I would try 50 but I dont want to be a kiln hog. Do you suffer from any wrist problems, The next day I can notice some stiffness . thanks for the videos
hey guy, I'm currently a high school senior in the highest level course of ceramics offered do you have any tips for pulling these huge mounds? I have no problem centering - I tried 40 today and I just had the hardest time pulling. My bottom was also pretty fat too :/

What is harder: Centering the clay, or bringing it to the wheel?
