Guy, I just love how you say, "This is so much fun!" It's so much fun WATCHING you, too. What a lovely pot, Thank you for the effort you have taken, not only do the great work, but to tell us all about how you so it. So grateful to you for all that you do.
Hey Guy ... I saw this video before .. but that is amazing ,, centering50lbs.. I did it too., that's the day it slid off wheel head broke my um... water catcher,, 😂,,, anyway great video,,, 🤠✋👋
Remarkable. I've only been throwing since May of '13, so I'm very noviced. I think the most I've tried to throw so far has been probably 7 or 8 pounds. Thanks for the video, I doubt I'm ready to do 50 pounds just yet but I'm getting ideas.
Yes a batch of people wanted me to show the centering part of this so I did "centering 50 Pound #1 and this is jsu finishing that pot with some gabbing !! All the best , Guy
@TheDraindeimo Hello . Both work . Its easier to not disform the pots when the pot has set up a bit . The longer you wait the more chance you have of the handles not staying on in firing .Both are correct though! The more skill you get the more choices you have !! All the best , Guy
2 Fantastic videos. Guy: Like you, I am using a heavily grogged terracotta. The issue I have is that I would like a smoother finish on my small mugs, jars etc. I am wondering if applying terra sigillata will solve this issue or should I just switch to a smoother clay? NB. I don't have the space to store more than one clay. Mark.
@dotinop Its all about figuring out how to move material . Bigger pots mean slower speed most offten . The old potters all said "Let the wheel do the work ." The tourque of the wheel is the work horse here. Can you wedge 50 pounds of clay? Learning to move a larger lump of clay takes the same kind of skill as throwing it . Do less slowly with more . I really learned my bigware throwing first from Frank Parsley at Branhams and George Currtis at Littlethorpe both traditional potters in the UK .
Hello Donna, I love Yorkshire .Years ago I worked at Wetheriggs pottery in Westmorland / cumberland now Cumbria. Have you been to the Soil Hill pottery site outside Halifax .?? I had heard the local council was thinking of putting houses up on the pottery .If you get a chance to go see Rolly Curtis at Littelthorpe Pottery south of Ripon say hello for me .. All the best , Guy
Not at all, thats why you make the thing on a bat .. When its a bit dryer you just pick the pot up turn it over and fettle it on the wheel .. It really is not as hard as you would think . Now turning ove an 80 pounder alone can get tricky . Often I will just lie then across my lap and hand fettle them in that possition .
@yongrai83 The presure of the inside hand pushing out and that of the outside hand are "cutting "instead of "compressing" .TAken to its exsteme the second level student will cut the pot in half while pulling up the wall in the transition half way up ... Good luck finding your way .
Guy, Awesome first!! and i tend to have a problem while pulling up the wall that I lose a lot of clay rather than pulling up the ring-shape clay up to the top. What should I do to avoid this problem? Thanks.
That is a great idea .. I will try to get to that after my crazy flowerpot seqson is passed ..Maybe in late june .. Thanks for the really great idea ..
Thank you for your wonderful clips. Let the wheel do the work; I will quote on that.

I would use a related clay with less grog . Then you could mix it into the batch if needed .. All the best MArk !!!

i can't wait!
Do you use the wheel or do you also hand build things? For example usage of coils.
@yakimonomaker Hello .. Yes , I have a clip called "centering 50 pounds #1".. Have a look at my channel here on YT
The Italian method for making handles? Hmmm...that's the Italian method for making meatballs, too! Just kidding. Ha!
Hey guy, my instructor usually has me wait till the pot is dry, than afterwards he has me slip and score the handles on, whose right?
