I thought of an alternate reason for the time machine not sending Trunks back. Bulma is a smart woman, one who would likely understand the idea of timeline branching. She would understand that if she sent her son back in time it wouldn't be their timeline anymore, and if he returned nothing would have changed. So, Bulma built the time machine in a way that it couldn't return to the future because she didn't want her son to have to return to the terrible world they lived in. She wanted her son to live a full and happy life in a timeline that could be saved. However, this Bulma also knew her son wasn't likely to just accept that, so she didn't tell him. When Trunks found out he couldn't return to his timeline he asked present Bulma for help. Before present Bulma could get too far in reverse engineering/trying to figure out why the time machine wouldn't work, she found a message from her future self explaining all of this. Present Bulma understood the actions of a mother trying to protect her child and the near impossible task before her; she ends up telling future Trunks that she can't fix the time machine.

Trunks should've stayed in the past after killing Zamasu, period. There was literally NO reason to send him off.. it's the one move Super has done that I can never forgive.
He literally went into the same situation as if he stayed in the past. The difference is that he would've been with a young version of himself if he had stayed. He could've been a mentor. Hell, he could be a better candidate than freaking Roshi in the Surival Arc. There are so many things that would kinda get around the time travel rule, such as neither Zeno knowing Trunks is from another time and Future Zeno could say "it's cool". Just say that Future Trunks is Trunks' older brother and give him an alias, perhaps even a Saiyan one
Would Cell even be able to show up? Since Trunks wasn't able to go back to the future for a good three years Cell never would've come to the past, not only because he couldn't without the Time Machine but because 17 and 18 were still fine in the future. He'd easily have hunted them down over the three years Trunks was absent and, when Trunks finally returned, he'd probably find humanity extinct at Cells hands, not the Androids. Heck, I think that'd be a good start for a part 2 if you do one.
The Cell we end up fighting is the result of Trunks going back to the future after the Androids have been killed. He then goes and kills the androids in the future after he returns. That's when Cell finds and kills Trunks and takes his Time Machine back to the past. So it is still possible for Cell to get there.
@@mortalis813 By the time they find the second time Machine Bulma would have already been working on the new one for some time and besides that one's been sitting for way longer being eroded by the elements. She might be able to salvage some spare parts from it if she needed to but she can't just fix it up a bit and have him use it.

AceTrainer Ryan Apparently (if my memory serves me correct) the events of Wrath of the Dragon sort of happened in FT's timeline, so he did technically get Tapion's sword, we just never got to see it.

Masako, I got a really big "What If" Scenario! What would happen if Goku killed the Supreme Kai back on earth; before his battle with Majin Vegeta? How would the rest of the saga turn out? Would Gohan still go Mystic? Would Super be, in anyway the show we know now? Please consider this one!

The ending of this what if is very similar to that of the unseen timeline, where the androids are deactivated and the Z Fighters remain alive. Awesome.
he should go to the future and since 17 and 18 are still alive cell absorbs them in that time line then he has to go back and bring the z fighters to the future to kill perfect cell.
to clarify, because they never actually had to fight 18 or 17 in the past they don't get as strong so trunks can hold them off for awhile but not kill them. So when cell emerges he still absorbs them.
The Cell that we got was from another timeline which was like the show. He had killed Trunks, taken his Time Machine back to the past after reverting to his larval state and then waiting to hatch.

I know that gohan would become a SSJ MUCH Earlier !! But If Cell was already dead and never become PERFECT, then would gohan still be able to become a SSJ2!!??
It is fairly safe to assume that eventually they all would reach SSJ2, but it may take longer than expected because the ZFighters didn't have the Cell Games to push them to use the room of spirit and time and master SSJ. If nobody trained up in the room of spirit and time they would all be weaker than they originally were at the end of the cell arc. Yes, they would have trained after the defeat of Cell, but it is safe to say they would not be near their original level during the Buu arc. Unless of course a different threat appears in the meantime giving them a reason to train harder. But because Goku never died he was there to raise Goten and train him up as well. So many possibilities, so little time.
I would say without that persistent threat it may take them a while to realize there is a level beyond SSJ so even if they do get there it might not even be until the Buu arc they unlock SSJ2.
I'd assume that when future trunks made it back to the future at the end of this what if, cell would have already absorbed 17 and 18 so he would already be in is perfect form.
personally I thinknit would have been more interesting to explore what could have happened if Trunks was stuck in the past after the Cell Games, with him having to stick around during the whole Majin Buu thing
This was a really good story the only thing I'm wondering is like in the anime they were able to beat Androids 19 and 20 but at the same time we're no match for 17 and 18. So having killed the threat still in their pods do you think they would have trained as intensely and would Trunks even be strong enough to fight those two Androids in his timeline
I have an issue with this, I feel like the moment they reach the laboratory goku and vegeta wouldn't let trunks destroy 17 & 18 in the pods. They've spent years waiting and training to fight these androids that could kill them seeing it as a challenge. They would ignore trunks warnings and awaken them, vegeta would even attack trunks to make it happen. I then see it playing out the same as when vegeta and 18 fought, both z fighters would lose to the androids about to die but since gohan is a super saiyan w/ the help of trunks they would escape and eventually lead to the cell games.
I think when Trunks go back to the future, he find out that not only his mother died, but all of humanity. Then, the fire's gone, And that's the time that Goku Black Shows up..... "I'll send you to the same place that I send all of mortals"

For a pt 2 trunks stays in in his time and eventually travels to namek and use the dragon balls and brings back the people of his earth and then wish’s to be put back on earth and then he gets to meet everyone who he met in the other universe
A good idea but remember- the bulk of any advanced tech Capsule Corp had would likely have gone into the time machine. At this point future Bulma is dead and Capsule Corp is most likely in ruins. Where is he going to find a ship?
This wouldn’t work for a simple reason. Multiple timelines. Shenron/ Porunga can’t effect an alternate timeline because that is WAY beyond their powers. The God Dragon might be able to do it, but they don’t know the Dragon God even exists. You also forget a simple rule from Super: messing with timelines is forbidden. Your entire idea wouldn’t work in anways
Well you see, Dr, Gero didn't have any pommels on his person. So, being in such a dire situation, tried to use his own hand as a pommel, but due to the significant differences between a pommel and a hand, it failed to end them rightly. It did, however, stun them long enough for him to escape.

Because of what Future Trunks has been through I'm not so sure it would have played out the same had he remained in the past. He didn't even allow Buu to wake up in his own timeline so I doubt he would dick around with the bad guys the way Goku, Vegeta and Gohan did when that found Babidi's lair.

Bigjess2you I would assume that would be a Cell from a future timeline which everything went like it did for Cell in the show, with Cell killing his version of Trunks (who killed the androids after returning from the past) and going back to the past Edit: I was talking about the Cell that shows up in the past, but the Cell in Trunks' future would probably be unchanged, as the Trunks that went back and fought Perfect Cell came back to the future, killed the future #17 & #18 and then killed his Imperfect Cell
Bigjess2you In mosakoX theory is that trunks does go back to the future so everything like normal cell kills trunks takes time machine to past :) If trunks never went back to the future they wouldn't be the future cell but the cell in the Lab would have been born around Buu saga with no androids left alive. So chance of bull cell+Buu then Bull would kill everyone and make a cell games whiles absorbing all the beated fighters making more better clones of him self and can also absorb things then go back as one being :)

17 and 18 are important. I can see future trunks meeting supreme ki seeing how universe 7 is deplodated in tournement of power and goes back and saves 17 and 18 getting supreme ki to remove their bombs but forcing them into kami jail... lol with krillen as the warden.😃 But he only had enough fuel to go back and save 17 and 18.
Honestly if we go by Masako's desciption of time travel being relative to when you leave and come back, there is a very real possibility that Trunks would be going back to a future with Perfect Cell... or a completely empty planet (cause lets face it, Cell will have buggered off :P)
I really think it would be interesting to see where this goes and see what could be done if we continue down this train of thought. I'd love to see him having to come back to the past after nothing is left for him.

Honestly? no need for a time machine malfunction. Just use our current understanding of time travel. That being that you can send something to the past, but there's no known way of sending it forward in time. The fact that we've only been able to send subatomic particles is mostly a power and calculations issue, but I imagine that Bulma can solve that. They produce capsules that can create pocket universes every time the button is pressed, and reduce them back to nearly nothing the moment they're pressed again. Bulma plays jump rope with quantum physics, no need to limit her arbitrarily or impugne her genius.

KidArk well if you’d know there is the theory of the anti phone. Particles that move faster than the speed of light are actually moving back in time (theoretically). So once you’ve built something faster than light, it’s kind of a time machine.
Our current understanding of time travel is that it is probably impossible (other than into the future, at a rate of one second per second). No one has ever successfully sent anything, even subatomic particles, through time in any other direction or rate.
Alus the Legend This is a very late reply, but I just saw it so I'll answer anyways. I saw this on another video that was talking about how there are 4 cannon timelines, the one that we see in the series, the one that trunks comes from, a different timeline from the future in which trunks successfully kills off the androids too, and another current time where the latter trunks went to in order to help. I believe that the cell we see in the show is from the third timeline I mentioned, the one in which another trunks went back to the past (to the 4th timeline) ended the android threat there and then went back to his own time and killed the androids from his time. When cell saw trunks and the time machine, he promptly killed trunks and reverted to his larva form in order to enter the machine and send himself back to a past that had androids there. How he ended up on a different one than the one trunks went to, I have no idea.
I'll try to explain this as I see it, if there's a need. So! Yes, we have 4 timelines in DBZ. 1) Original original Timeline, where Trunks dies. 2) Timeline where Future Cell didn't exist. 3) Future Trunks Timeline that we know. 4) Our DBZ-DBS-DBGT Timeline. 1) Trunks goes back to the past, everything goes as per usual, he and team kills androids with the pilot, Trunks goes back to home, kills androids with the pilot, wants to go to the past and tell everyone but he gets killed by Cell who uses time machine. 2) Trunks shows up, everything goes as per usual but without Cell showing up in Pepper Town, Bulma creates a pilot, Trunks and team kills the android, then he goes back to home, and the story continues. 3) Everything goes as per usual, but when Trunks goes back he kills Cell (he's stronger here because of Cell in the past) and you know the rest 4) Nothing to say there 5) Timeline from this what if Here are time travels of Trunks 1->2->1 1->4->3 (Cell created 4th timeline and Trunks created 3rd because of it) 1(?)->5->1(?) Here are time travels of Cell 1->4 1->5 Get it? I think I explained it accurately as it was in the series. Thank you for reading this.
Two problems here: 1) The "capsule corp employee" thing can't work because he's a super saiyan. There are only 2 pure saiyans alive, and one half saiyan. Even Vegeta would find thaf fishy. 2) Trunks didn't train in the Room of Spirit and Time so, even after defeting 17, 18 and Gero, he would still be weaker than the 17 and 18 in his time. So he either asks his "past" mom to build a remote to turn off the androids, or asks 16 to go back to the future with him. 16 is the strongest of the group at this point.
2:50 There's one major problem with this idea: it completely negates the Cell saga. We learn from Cell himself that he got the time machine after Trunks came back to the future in his original timeline, meaning that Trunks needs to have the ability to go forward in time so Cell can steal it in the future.
Bobby Tornabene Miraculously leaving only Earth and Namek, the only two planets with DragonBalls, Yardrat, the mystic people with ancient superpowers and apparently Frieza 79, because Frieza decided the 78 others were not worth keeping around? Don't get me started on the anime (GT would make it even worse if it was cannon). Frieza has a hell of an Empire with less than 25 planets to rule... Also, Vegeta wanted the DragonBalls to be able to destroy planets for as long as he wanted. That's gonna take a while right, with only a couple more candidates? Not to mention you've got 4 kais and 4 kaioshins (originally) to rule 30 planets? And Beerus casually destroyed half of one on a whim, the universe won't last long at that rate... Nah, it's a blunder, no other way to put it
Who says there isn't still billions of planets being cultivated, they just don't have actual civilized societies on them yet. Even that excuse is pretty thin though, the Kais are all lazy bastards =P

Love your analysis, but I do have to point out that Kami was vehemently against fusing with Piccolo until Cell proved to be too much of a challenge. Without the threat to the earth, I extremely doubt that Kami would allow them to remerge on the whim of Piccolo's competitive nature.
After this what if leaves off i suggest a sort of part 2. What if there was a resistance lead by Mai? He goes back, they fight together, and have a relationship from there
Masako I have a what if theory, and it involves our favorite Bio Android Cell, the scenario is, what it the Sub Lab was never discovered, and the Cell in that lab was allowed to live and eventually emerge, only this scenario the Computer tells Cell everything that happened including the bits about his future self, the growth of Son Goku & friends and the current location of 17 & 18
Or maybe Cell would've hid in the time machine and changed to an egg before Trunks went in the time machine the first time. Then, when the machine is greatly damaged, Cell had hatched and escaped before the Z Fighters found him.

Trunks didn't know about the different timelines until he returned to the future to found out that nothing really changed even after the Androids were defeated, he came to the past with hope that he can change the future.

Would Cell even be able to show up? Since Trunks wasn't able to go back to the future for a good three years Cell never would've come to the past, not only because he couldn't without the Time Machine but because 17 and 18 were still fine in the future. He'd easily have hunted them down over the three years Trunks was absent and, when Trunks finally returned, he'd probably find humanity extinct at Cells hands, not the Androids.
Heck, I think that'd be a good start for a part 2 if you do one.

The Cell we end up fighting is the result of Trunks going back to the future after the Androids have been killed. He then goes and kills the androids in the future after he returns. That's when Cell finds and kills Trunks and takes his Time Machine back to the past. So it is still possible for Cell to get there.

AceTrainer Ryan Apparently (if my memory serves me correct) the events of Wrath of the Dragon sort of happened in FT's timeline, so he did technically get Tapion's sword, we just never got to see it.

to clarify, because they never actually had to fight 18 or 17 in the past they don't get as strong so trunks can hold them off for awhile but not kill them. So when cell emerges he still absorbs them.

The Cell that we got was from another timeline which was like the show. He had killed Trunks, taken his Time Machine back to the past after reverting to his larval state and then waiting to hatch.

It is fairly safe to assume that eventually they all would reach SSJ2, but it may take longer than expected because the ZFighters didn't have the Cell Games to push them to use the room of spirit and time and master SSJ. If nobody trained up in the room of spirit and time they would all be weaker than they originally were at the end of the cell arc. Yes, they would have trained after the defeat of Cell, but it is safe to say they would not be near their original level during the Buu arc. Unless of course a different threat appears in the meantime giving them a reason to train harder. But because Goku never died he was there to raise Goten and train him up as well. So many possibilities, so little time.

This was a really good story the only thing I'm wondering is like in the anime they were able to beat Androids 19 and 20 but at the same time we're no match for 17 and 18. So having killed the threat still in their pods do you think they would have trained as intensely and would Trunks even be strong enough to fight those two Androids in his timeline
I have an issue with this, I feel like the moment they reach the laboratory goku and vegeta wouldn't let trunks destroy 17 & 18 in the pods. They've spent years waiting and training to fight these androids that could kill them seeing it as a challenge. They would ignore trunks warnings and awaken them, vegeta would even attack trunks to make it happen. I then see it playing out the same as when vegeta and 18 fought, both z fighters would lose to the androids about to die but since gohan is a super saiyan w/ the help of trunks they would escape and eventually lead to the cell games.

A good idea but remember- the bulk of any advanced tech Capsule Corp had would likely have gone into the time machine. At this point future Bulma is dead and Capsule Corp is most likely in ruins. Where is he going to find a ship?

This wouldn’t work for a simple reason. Multiple timelines. Shenron/ Porunga can’t effect an alternate timeline because that is WAY beyond their powers. The God Dragon might be able to do it, but they don’t know the Dragon God even exists. You also forget a simple rule from Super: messing with timelines is forbidden. Your entire idea wouldn’t work in anways

Because of what Future Trunks has been through I'm not so sure it would have played out the same had he remained in the past. He didn't even allow Buu to wake up in his own timeline so I doubt he would dick around with the bad guys the way Goku, Vegeta and Gohan did when that found Babidi's lair.

Honestly if we go by Masako's desciption of time travel being relative to when you leave and come back, there is a very real possibility that Trunks would be going back to a future with Perfect Cell... or a completely empty planet (cause lets face it, Cell will have buggered off :P)
I really think it would be interesting to see where this goes and see what could be done if we continue down this train of thought. I'd love to see him having to come back to the past after nothing is left for him.

Honestly? no need for a time machine malfunction. Just use our current understanding of time travel. That being that you can send something to the past, but there's no known way of sending it forward in time.
The fact that we've only been able to send subatomic particles is mostly a power and calculations issue, but I imagine that Bulma can solve that. They produce capsules that can create pocket universes every time the button is pressed, and reduce them back to nearly nothing the moment they're pressed again. Bulma plays jump rope with quantum physics, no need to limit her arbitrarily or impugne her genius.

KidArk well if you’d know there is the theory of the anti phone. Particles that move faster than the speed of light are actually moving back in time (theoretically). So once you’ve built something faster than light, it’s kind of a time machine.
Our current understanding of time travel is that it is probably impossible (other than into the future, at a rate of one second per second). No one has ever successfully sent anything, even subatomic particles, through time in any other direction or rate.

Alus the Legend This is a very late reply, but I just saw it so I'll answer anyways. I saw this on another video that was talking about how there are 4 cannon timelines, the one that we see in the series, the one that trunks comes from, a different timeline from the future in which trunks successfully kills off the androids too, and another current time where the latter trunks went to in order to help. I believe that the cell we see in the show is from the third timeline I mentioned, the one in which another trunks went back to the past (to the 4th timeline) ended the android threat there and then went back to his own time and killed the androids from his time. When cell saw trunks and the time machine, he promptly killed trunks and reverted to his larva form in order to enter the machine and send himself back to a past that had androids there. How he ended up on a different one than the one trunks went to, I have no idea.
I'll try to explain this as I see it, if there's a need.
So! Yes, we have 4 timelines in DBZ.
1) Original original Timeline, where Trunks dies.
2) Timeline where Future Cell didn't exist.
3) Future Trunks Timeline that we know.
4) Our DBZ-DBS-DBGT Timeline.
1) Trunks goes back to the past, everything goes as per usual, he and team kills androids with the pilot, Trunks goes back to home, kills androids with the pilot, wants to go to the past and tell everyone but he gets killed by Cell who uses time machine.
2) Trunks shows up, everything goes as per usual but without Cell showing up in Pepper Town, Bulma creates a pilot, Trunks and team kills the android, then he goes back to home, and the story continues.
3) Everything goes as per usual, but when Trunks goes back he kills Cell (he's stronger here because of Cell in the past) and you know the rest
4) Nothing to say there
5) Timeline from this what if

1->4->3 (Cell created 4th timeline and Trunks created 3rd because of it)

I love your scenarios. It'll be awesome to have an animator to do custom DBZ animations to give some visuals.
Two problems here:
1) The "capsule corp employee" thing can't work because he's a super saiyan. There are only 2 pure saiyans alive, and one half saiyan. Even Vegeta would find thaf fishy.
2) Trunks didn't train in the Room of Spirit and Time so, even after defeting 17, 18 and Gero, he would still be weaker than the 17 and 18 in his time. So he either asks his "past" mom to build a remote to turn off the androids, or asks 16 to go back to the future with him. 16 is the strongest of the group at this point.
2:50 There's one major problem with this idea: it completely negates the Cell saga. We learn from Cell himself that he got the time machine after Trunks came back to the future in his original timeline, meaning that Trunks needs to have the ability to go forward in time so Cell can steal it in the future.
The only problem I have with this is how Super retconned time travel. It wasn't constant in Z.
Super is messing way too much with continuity... Remember the thirty populated planets in the whole universe?

Don't get me started on the anime (GT would make it even worse if it was cannon). Frieza has a hell of an Empire with less than 25 planets to rule...
Also, Vegeta wanted the DragonBalls to be able to destroy planets for as long as he wanted. That's gonna take a while right, with only a couple more candidates? Not to mention you've got 4 kais and 4 kaioshins (originally) to rule 30 planets? And Beerus casually destroyed half of one on a whim, the universe won't last long at that rate...

Masako I have a what if theory, and it involves our favorite Bio Android Cell, the scenario is, what it the Sub Lab was never discovered, and the Cell in that lab was allowed to live and eventually emerge, only this scenario the Computer tells Cell everything that happened including the bits about his future self, the growth of Son Goku & friends and the current location of 17 & 18
How is Cell there if Trunks couldn't go back to the past? Wouldn't Trunks be facing a Perfect Cell upon finally going home?

Or maybe Cell would've hid in the time machine and changed to an egg before Trunks went in the time machine the first time. Then, when the machine is greatly damaged, Cell had hatched and escaped before the Z Fighters found him.
XlitleoY That is a bit of a stretch. Cell would have had to go to Bulma's bunker, regress himself, get in, and form a basketball sized egg without Bulma and Trunks finding out. Sounds like some Super writing there.

MasakoX how did cell get to this timeline if the time machine breaks down . cell used the time machine trunks used to get back to his own timeline.

Trunks didn't know about the different timelines until he returned to the future to found out that nothing really changed even after the Androids were defeated, he came to the past with hope that he can change the future.
