    I think the longer sustain on the Jolie harp makes it so dreamy and otherworldly. For me, even though the Ogden suits more classical styles, it’s hard to pass up that magical sound so the Jolie wins for me!! I love your harp comparison videos with all your little notes added and the side by side passages of different styles!!!!

      That’s wonderful to hear! I have a great team of editors working with me, so the editing is WAY better than I would do on my own. And I did my best to plan the video based on the best elements about other comparison videos I could find. Glad you liked it! 😄👍🏻
      Question: do you think it would be helpful / interesting to see a comparison between any of my other harps? Some people have been asking me to play the same snippets on all my harps back to back. I could do that, but I’m not sure what it would accomplish apart from being interesting 🤔

    They both sound lovely! It's hard to choose a preference... I do really like the brightness and sustain from the Jolie, but I also love the mellowness from the Ogden. I guess there's only one solution... I need to buy more harps!! :D

    Both harps sound great, and each has its own distinct sound and feel. I prefer the sound of the Ogden, mainly for its warmth and fullness of sound.

    Two very lovely harps! Listening on an iPad speaker doesn’t do sound the justice! So I sent back and relistened with a headset. Now they’re even nicer! To me the Ogden had broader sound for each note, while the Jolie had more crisp notes. Ogden would mesh with an orchestra and Jolie would cut through in a Celtic band. Thanks for doing this comparison!

      @LearningtheHarp  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s a nice summary! 😊 The Jolie also works more easily with contemporary type music in a band setting (like when I play in worship band at church) because of the clarity etc, it’s much easier to mix.

    In currently in market for purchasing a harp (actually, my first harp...) and not gonna lie, it can get a bit overwhelming considering how different each harp is! Even among the same line-up!
    You underlined the differences of these both very well. I thought I would lean in more towards the Ogden, but then the Jolie won me over. I guess it got extra points from the fact that faster passages come way easier on it... I'll have to consider that when deciding on my harp.
    Thank you lots! Maybe in the future you'll be able to perhaps present more harp models? Especially lesser known brands?

      That’s true, some songs sound good with different harps, so it depends on what type of music you’re playing more (and which sound you prefer). I’m enjoying the clear sound of the Jolie Hybrid and the power it gives me to make such a big sound, with slightly less effort 😅 It feels very different to play, and I’m particularly enjoying the feeling of playing the Jolie at the moment 👌🏻

    I love them both. Looking at comparision videos such as yours is really helpfull. I am only one year into studying the harp and about to buy my first one. When I started, I was sure I prefered a mellowed sound as the Ogden, but as I progressed and realised I prefer to play celtic music, I may need a harp with a clearer sound. For the moment, I think I'll go for a harp as the Jolie Hybrid. Or maybe something in between if I can find it.
    Thanks for the video !

      I’ve always preferred mellower sounds (I chose soft and mellow instruments when I bought my violin and piano) which is why I went for the Ogden - and enjoyed it, but for some types of music and in some settings (eg amplified in my church band etc), it really wasn’t helping me. And on top of that it was so difficult to carry around! So I’ve found the Jolie Hybrid such a revolution for me, and I’ve found I really enjoy the sound too 😄

    I really like the sound of the Jolie Hybrid. I do have a small pedal harp, which I love the sound of, but it would be nice to have a smaller, lighter celtic type harp to take out. I have fibromyalgia, so I am unable to take my pedal harp out to play anywhere as it causes me too much pain to move it. Maybe someday I will have the money for one of these harps. Nice to know they sound so good.

    I love the sound of both harps, but chose the Jolie for the brighter tone, plus I felt I had more control over the dynamic range with the nylon and slightly lighter tension. ALSO, I learned that I don’t like the feel of gut strings…small but critical detail!

  • @musicalmarion
    @musicalmarion ปีที่แล้ว

    I so prerfer the warm tone of the gut strings, but as a vegetarian I opted for Nylon strings (I have a Dusty Strings Ravenna 34) and I hear they can last a little longer too. Christy Lyn you're so right though, because the style of the music dictates which is preferable. Lovely to hear both of your beautiful instruments, and they both have a super tone.❤🎵🌼

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes nylon strings definitely break less frequently which is a plus, and the string tension is usually higher on gut string harps, which adds to the phenomenon!
      If you prefer the warmer sound and you want to look for another harp in the future, you will find that there is also a lot of variation in the sound of nylon string harps - some are warmer than others 😊👍🏻

    Both are so lovely! However, "The River Flows In You" really shows how superior the Camac levers are to the L&H Performance levers as far as tone preservation. I notice the same thing between my L&H lever harps (Prelude 40 and Troub V) versus my Dusty Strings Ravenna 34 with Camac levers.

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s very interesting, I hadn’t noticed that! I’m so used to the actual feel of the L&H levers under my fingers when I change a lever up and down that at first I didn’t enjoy the difference, but I’m sure I’ll get used to it! Also the levers on my Jolie Hybrid are a little tight for quick lever changes right now, but apparently they loosen up over time 😊👍🏻

    The wood type will make a difference in how a harp sounds too. While I loved the way a walnut wood harp looked (with that gorgeous dark wood,) I found I preferred the brighter sounds of maple and cherry harps to a morose sounding walnut harp. But if one plays a lot of music in minor keys, maybe a walnut harp would be preferable.

  • @shannonsharpstory

    A great comparison! I like the Jolie for all of the songs except those two faster classical songs. You are right that the longer sustain in the Jolie muddies the song. I'm wondering what would happen if you switched the string type on each harp (if this won't injure the harp). Is the difference the harp or the type of strings? Just wondering... 🤔

    I must appologize I thought you were comparing string gut vs nylon, no wonder why I couldn't hear the difference. I can hear the difference in the richness, mellow or brightness in the harps. You are right about the ogden having a bit muddy sound when there is more than one note played in the bass, it has a beautiful mellow rich sound over all more for classical, I love the mellow and high tension. As far as which harp should or could be used for different music, truthfully I think your Jolie surpasses the Ogden for clear tone, bass resonance and tension and can be used for all music, including jigs. You seem (also) to have less hand strain with the Jolie which would give you a more even strike especially in the upper range. Your Jolie has a better sweet note resonance upper strings which is hard to get on many harps instead of a pling. I'm still a mellow harp kid, but that Jolie has a lot of good in it. Every harp, wood, string, harmonic curve, soundboard even the size of the holes and lengths of the strings all have gifts to bring to the tone of a harp. You played a hard game here. If I was a celtic, Jolie would win. Personally, $$ for $$ and still get great music your Ogden wins, great for beginners, budget and the type of tunes they start with. More advanced who knows how to get a tone from their fingers and to mute sustain, the Jolie would win as a forever harp too. Thinking of it as a woman how it would dress and sound going to a funeral, wedding, gala, compatition, church they both win in elegance of sound but if you putting on the Ritz the Jolie all the way, including a Rodeo. Okay which one did you really like the best and not because your heart if fond of you Ogden.

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s ok! Gut vs Nylon is just a simple way for me to describe the two different harps, since it’s a significant contributor to the differences in tone you hear. But you’re right, there are lots of other things that contribute! 😊👍🏻 At the moment I’m enjoying the Jolie Hybrid more overall.

    Both beautiful, but the Jolie sound appeals to me more, even on the classical pieces. How does the feel of playing compare? Does the lightness of the Jolie effect its stability against your body? Have you found you need to alter your technique or how you sit?

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rebecca! Yes my husband Jonny also prefers the Jolie sound even for classical pieces, and my mom prefers the Ogden for all the pieces so it’s definitely personal taste! The lightness of the Jolie doesn’t affect me that much during playing, I adjusted very quickly. But I have found that when putting up the levers, the harp moves a bit because the levers are a bit tight and the harp is so light. I spoke to Music Makers and they said the levers will loosen up which makes sense because I’ve played other harps with Camac levers and they were much looser, so I’m sure it’ll be fine! Other than that, I have found that I am able to sit a bit lower because the Jolie isn’t as tall as the Ogden, which is convenient because I found that a normal dining chair was too low for sitting at my Ogden. So I’m very happy with that change! One more thing is I have to dampen the bass more often because of the longer sustain 😊👍🏻

      @LearningtheHarp  ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem with a 20 string harp is that there is very little harp music or educational materials written for that size. So I would recommend starting with the Harpsicle and then adding levers later when you have budget for it 😃

  • @sharonpearson340
    @sharonpearson340 ปีที่แล้ว

    I would say that the Jolie wins with most of the songs you played. I could tell that the Jolie is much easier to play with fast tunes.

  • @SongOfMoonchild

    From you review i got that Jolie fits better for songs that played slowly(because of nice beatiful sustain). I also have Jolie, but mine is not hybrid, and i bought it as harp kit. Sounds bright.
    But i am not satisfied with my piezo pickup.Can you please recommend me microphone for home recording?

      @LearningtheHarp  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there! I’ve used a few different microphones successfully - generally I find that a good condenser mic works well. I’ve enjoyed using RodeNT2, but that’s just because it’s a mic that my dad already had so I didn’t have to buy one 😁

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I like to place the mic about 1 meter away from the harp, not too close.

    Its amazing how you make a few minutes feel like an hour! I really like the Ogden. Its warm and the sustain is brief which could be good for a few of the impromptus i do. But the Jolie has a nice brightness that could be good for very slowly healing pieces that are played.

    • @LearningtheHarp
      @LearningtheHarp  ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Nice analysis! I used to highly value the warm mellow sound because I accompanied my singing a lot and I have a gentle warm voice and have always been drawn to warmer sounding instruments, but now I’m playing more with other instruments over speaker systems, and the Jolie works MUCH better for me in those scenarios! It cuts through and is easier to amplify because of the clarity etc. It also sounds nice with my voice, just different 😊

    Between these two harps, I hear the greatest difference is in the lower strings......the lower the note you play, the greater the difference I hear. The one on 'my' right sounds like nylon, and the Ogden sounds like wire-wound strings, but I suspect the quality of the soundbox plays into the difference as a secondary factor, too. My opinion is so strong that I CAN'T believe it's JUST a matter of taste. The Ogden is of a superior sound quality. You just make them both sound so good because of your talent and skill on the instrument, so the difference is less pronounced (how's that for a social recovery?}. :)

  • @rawsonpiano
    @rawsonpiano 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Piano tuners perspective: I think that the Jolie is sonically more pleasing as it has a clearer overtone series. On some harpsichords there is a Buffant setting wherein you pull a lever and it pushes a mute rail against the strings to shorten the sustain. You can test if this would work by temporarily placing some cotton balls between the strings. If this provides the effect you want, then you can glue a set of cotton balls onto a strip of wood to quickly apply or remove the effect on all strings, or just certain sections. Violinists sometimes use a rubber mute on the back side of the bridge.

    As many others have said, they both sound lovely. I'm leaning overall to the sound of the Ogden, but since I play a Triplett Catalina that has a very warm, resonant sound, that's no surprise. What I really enjoyed most about this video was hearing you play portions of so many pieces that highlighted your technique. It's wonderful listening to you play ANY harp! 🎶

    I can definitely hear the difference and can tell how each one would suit a different mood and purpose. They’re both gorgeous! You do a nice job comparing them. It makes me want to get the Jolie Hybrid but I just got the Ogden as my first harp, so no new harp purchases for now.

    Wow! You really showed the difference between the two harps! I think it depends on the piece that is being played. I liked some pieces better on the Ogden, but some better on the Jolie! I have a Salvi Mia so it is fun to think of the comparison. I am still learning so much about harp. Thank you Christy-lyn for all your educational videos! I have learned so much from you!

    • @LearningtheHarp

      Yes I’m enjoying not having to work so hard! But playing on a harp with such high tension has forced me to learn solid technique that can support me, and thankfully I have never had any pain or injury, despite such high tension strings 😅 In my opinion it’s higher tension than my pedal harp!

    You can definitely hear the age of the Ogden compared to Jolie which has a much lighter sound. The Ogden has had more time to settle into itself so it will be interesting to hear how the Jolie slowly changes in sound as it ages.

    Oh. My. Goodness!!!! This answers one of my biggest questions with harp playing!!!! I love your videos as always, thank you so much for taking the time to make such helpful, beautiful and informative content and courses. When I took your Canon in D course and then Fur Elise, I didn’t understand why my Dusty Strings Crescendo 34 was so buzzy and I had a hard time keeping it from sounding “muddy” (plus I’m still working on improving my confidence in placing so I don’t buzz!) but I didn’t realize how different harps have a different amount of sustain!!! My harp has a ton more sustain in the lower register than your lovely Ogden and it sounds so much more like the also lovely Jolie!!! This is so helpful to know. That settles it, I need more than one harp!! 😁 Different voices for different styles. ❤

  • @Maris-W
    @Maris-W ปีที่แล้ว

    That was so interesting. At first I didn't see much of a difference, but as you got into the songs, I began to understand what you were meaning about the sustain, or warm vs. bright. I decided for me, I preferred the Jolie, but it is a hard choice. I do prefer celtic music, which you mentioned was easier to play on the Jolie, thus helped make my final choice.

    What is the impact of the soundboard in each instrument? The string difference is interesting, and the sustain makes a big difference depending on the genre of the song. They each have their purpose, as do my two Tripletts, primarily in portability!
