    Your wonderful explanation at the beginning aside, you've made this very very very clear all along. The show has always been about progression. The wonderful thing about TH-cam is you can go back and watch episodes if youre still at the low budget end. But complaining that a youtube channel doesn't keep making cheap DIY episodes because "you" don't want to progress doesn't mean that the channel has to stay stale. Besides.....who doesn't want to see cool gear??? :)

    I love this type of episode, and kudos to the way you addressed it at the start. I work in post-prod so I never get to play with these production toys, but the Mini especially is starting to be used more and more in both TV shows and features, and so this is great for me to watch and learn where my footage is coming from. Appreciated!

    Long time Film Riot viewer here. I remember watching your show back in the early 2010s where I was lucky enough to pick up two of these anamorphic lenses, which I've loved for years and agree with you completely. Back then, no one was buying them and they were all over youtube. Got two 35mm lenses for around $600. Blows my mind how I'm now watching a FIlm Riot video about them. It really has come full circle! Keep up the great work guys, you have always been who I've recommended people to who are looking to get started.

    I'm a shortfilm maker and shot both of my shorts on the Alexa with Lomo Anamorphic lenses (second one with Alexa mini). I love the look and have positive experiences with this combo. It's expensive but I was incredibly lucky to get sponsorships at a very low price. My DoP is also an Alexa teacher so it felt very comfortable with him and that camera. We shot Log C, ProRes4444XQ and first film was cropped to 2.39:1 and second film will be (still in post) 2:1. My only complaint would be that it's not a good choice if you want a very sharp look, the look is more soft, creamy and cinematic.

    Just the Video for my Anamorphic Lens Playlist. One thing I really noticed about my DIY Anamorphic Lens was the _feeling_ it gave to the Camera, the way the Panning speeds differed due to the squeezing. My Lens Adapter has no issues with close and distant focusing and uses no Diopters.

    • @XXXX1138
      @XXXX1138 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ernst Stavro Blofeld imagine scanning film at a lower bit/resolution. all the flaws are covered up by compression and banding issues. its about being able to have the options to use any method needed to tell your story.

  • @AGuyCommenting
    @AGuyCommenting 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm really loving the image of the Alexa Mini, but there's just something about the anamorphic lenses and their focus that feels off to me. When I'm looking at an image with a shallow depth of field, it looks like the out-of-focus areas appear warped in a circle-like shape. I can definitely see it in the shots with the natural scenery. That could be just the Alexa's de-squeezing feature and I can see that effect being used for dream-like sequences. But overall, not too fond of it if I need shallow focus for scenes that aren't supposed to be dreamy-looking.
    Then again, it depends on the story I want to tell. That's probably it. Thanks, Film Riot!

    I think Film Riot gets too concerned about scaring off DIY fans. What I like about Film Riot is watching the progress from amateur to professional. I've enjoyed the journey from Josh's pimply face in "Teleportation Tourette's Syndrome" to whatever the hell that is in "Create Your Own Snapchat Effects". I hope one day they'll be showing us behind the scenes of a block buster movie made by Triune Films.

    I love the look you get out of arri cameras. I'm very curious as to how much footage you could possibly record to that 128gb cfast card... like 3 minutes? You also didn't say, but does the Arri have slow motion at all? What camera would you recommend to shot match with it if you did need slow motion?

    • @filmriot
      @filmriot  8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Scott Wetzler The Mini can shoot up to 200fps. The 128gb card was read at an hour.

      Does it allow you the ability to undercrank? I'm trying to figure out a way to shoot at 22fps to add punch to my action scenes. Kind of like the old martial arts films.

      Scott Wetzler One 128gb card is about 46-47 minutes of 2K, around 17 minutes in 3.2k, and about 13 minutes in UHD. This is all based on ProRes 4444. XQ will slice those numbers pretty hard.
      Yes, you can undercrank. I think you can set any fps to a few decimals from 0.5-200.

    Rely nice ! I didn't now anamorphic lenses worked that way !
    I think there are filters (like an N/D filter), that help emulated the anamorphic look (at least in the boket). Have you ever try some ? Is it interesting ?

    why do you guys never cover black magic cameras ? like the mini Ursa 4.6k

    • @TheNicoDavis
      @TheNicoDavis 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      In their NAB 2014 episode they had an interview with someone from Blackmagic about the Ursa

      Because they lie and never live up to promises.

    • @mrsilveri
      @mrsilveri 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would guess it's due to BlackMagic being less reliable/consistent than other manufacturers. Don't get me wrong, I'm an Ursa owner (full size, not the mini) but in general things like the FS7, Offerings from Canon's cinema line or Red's are easier to deal with. Then again they've been doing it longer too so maybe in a couple of years BlackMagic will be in the same boat.

    • @joyboylivin
      @joyboylivin 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fully agree with this. For their age Black Magic are doing really well, they could become a problem for the other companies very quickly.

    • @josephbarrett2425
      @josephbarrett2425 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They're doing well for their age but its absolutely inexcusable to promise a camera with global shutter, put it on presale and release it nearly a year after the promised date with NO global shutter and a cyan cast.

    Curious to see those anamorphic lenses on a GH4 since it also g]has in-camera de-squeeze - useful for those of us on lower budgets

    I really wish you guys would do a video about the GH4, I'd really love to hear your thoughts on it, especially since you were considering getting it before you chose the C100.

    Amazing Episode!
    I only have one question.. Did you color grade the footage that you shot with the Alexa Mini? Or that was directly what you got?

    • @ianm551
      @ianm551 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Looked slightly graded, it would still look great though ungraded.

      There aren't a lot of filmmakers out there, creativity takes effort, a big majority aren't willing to do that. A 9 to 5 job pays and is little less effort, so why be creative when you can be technical.

    If Film Riot prepared you to shoot a film with an Alexa Mini, you shouldn't shoot with an Alexa Mini. Professional cameras are for professionals. As a professional television producer, I enjoy hearing about this gear and seeing it demonstrated, but I hire professionals to actually use the gear, and you should, too. DPs and Cam Ops get the big bucks because you can't replace experience with a few TH-cam videos.

    Hey Ryan, the music you used for the demo; is it something we can use that is royalty free? Free or not, what's the name of it, and where would I find it? Thanks~

      +PhotOZ - Quadrocopter-Videos and more I would spend it all on gear and end up not having any budget to pay actors... But I'd have sweet toys to play with !!!!🎞🎞🎞🎞🎞🎥🎥🎥🎥🎥📽📽📽📽📽
