    Now these shots seemed a lot more wide than a typical 2.35:1 shot, instead could you have been using a 2.0x anamorphic lens on a 16:9 image sensor? because a 16:9 sensor should only be subject to 1.33x anamorphic lens and the 4:3 sensors should be the ones with a 2.0x lens. just thought the shots were a little too wide and this might have been the case

    The point is for all the reasons presented in this episode. ;) This method isn't for everyone, not all hollywood films are shot this way either... It is a style, one that you may or may not want/like, but others (like myself) will. Also, I don't think it is like saying to shoot on film at all. This is a very simple technique to get a more filmic image. Shooting on film is extremely complex and costly.

    Ryan, You forgot to tell them about the line you may get from the filter. It you bring the flare into focus you will see the string line split your flare. So keep your flares out of focus.

    Thanks man, glad you ended up digging it in the end. But actually, all the flares in Star Trek are real. Check out the special features, they talk about how they got them. The post-pro flares are great, but nothing beats getting it in camera, in my opinion. There's something to the aesthetic of getting it organically that just doesn't translate through post work. Super 8 had a lot of post flares, and for me it was obvious.

    When using the lenses it does. Since it is stretched, then scaled vertically for the correct aspect ratio, you are using every bit of info in that image. Whereas when you crop it, you lose those pixels.

    It's good to try and match the front size as close as possible. If you go with too large of filter with a smaller front SLR lens, what happens is that the top and bottom of any oval bokeh shapes are slightly cut off. It'll still stretch the bokeh vertically and you'll still get the streaks and flares but the bokeh light points wont always be perfectly oval.
    This also happens with real anamorphic lens combos as well. So its a real characteristic of anamorphics.

    No problem. I've never worked with anamorphic lenses, but I believe it is the same principle as with non-16:9 cameras that record in squeeze mode (like the old DVX100, for example). Basically, the resolution remains the same, but you record a squeezed image meant to be unsqueezed in post, so that the aspect ratio ends up being something like 2:35:1. The pixel aspect ratio is different but I'm not sure roughly what it woud be. However, there definitely is no interpolation.

    Paul Thomas Anderson shoots anamorphic as well. In There Will Be Blood, during the night scene where the oil derrick is on fire you see bright orange vignetting due to the lens he's using. I think it's pretty cool though.

    It increases "effective" pixels. It also increases horizontal FOV. The focal length of a lens not only affects how much you can see (field of view) but also how depth is compressed or exaggerated. Without changing depth compression you get more field of view with anamorphic photography and that, more than flare, more than bokeh, is the significant difference. *THAT* is what gives anamorphic photography its "emotional" impact compared to spherical photography. It's an optical magic trick.

    Very interesting, don't think i will dive into that in the near future, but still a very creative option. The double focusing seems like it would be tough on the fly.

    The question is which anamorphic lens is compatible with your telephoto lens. You need a lens at least 60mm on your T3i to avoid corner vignette. Shop ebay for an anamorphic (e.g. Sankor, Proskar, etc). After you know the front diameter of your camera lens and the back diameter of your newly acquired anamorphic lens (latter connects to former), you ask VidAtlantic or Redstan (look them up) for the right adapter. You may have to buy some step-up or stepdown rings also.

    Magic Lantern (Unified)
    It's a firmware Update for all Canon EOS cameras starting at the T1i.
    The T2i has the best feature set of the update as every other camera already has in-house solutions so some problems the T2i faced.
    But T2i firmware updates ended with 1.09.
    Check out Magic Lantern. You're T2i will be a crop 5D with all the neat gadgets like USB monitor, Kelvin Control, AGC/Audio controls & Visual Bars.
    Focus peaking tools, etc.

    What you ask is irrelevant to anamorphic because the same aspect ratio is obtained by stretching the image in post, or, if your editor limits you to 16:9 you position the top if the footage at 270 pixels from the top and make the height of the footage 540 (instead of 1080). If you have an anamorphic projector, you leave it "squeezed" and it stretches during display. To answer your question, install Magic Lantern firmware and use a cropmark to film, then a similar cropmark template when editing.

    Depends on what you shoot. I bet Ryan's answer would be DSLR's because the can have a very shallow depth of field which in easy terms means that you blur the background out like a mother. It looks waaaay more filmic. Besides, DSLR's have interchangable lens mount so there's waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more possibilities when it comes to lenses. Too many advantages to sum up :)

    It creates anamorphic bokeh morphing and flares/streaks. The cropping isnt even necessary, it's just part of the end look. But the real traits are in the bokeh and flares with this filer.

    According to experts, stretching horizontal doesn't cause a noticeable decrease in footage quality, as long as the vertical pixels remain unaltered, and it makes it look more "cinematic", since that's what cinema's been doing all these years, and that's what we're all used to.

    It's also worth noting that because video compression codecs are subsampled in the horizontal domain for color you get, essentially, free chroma filtering when you vertically un-anamorphose footage so that it looks correct on a standard 16:9 frame. On the 5D this would translate into some "free" anti-moire processing, potentially.

    Find out the filter size in front of your lens, then buy your anamorphic lens on ebay (stay away from the huge ones made for projectors) and then determine which of the 3 or 4 providers of anamorphic lens adapters have the best adapter for you. I have a Proskar 16 in a Redstan adapter (perfect match) which has a 52mm thread (perfect match again) into the front of my Panasonic video camera. I have autofocus and stabilization now, and only use the DSLRs for the "epic" shots on crane/dolly.

    What people don't realize is that the filter is pretty much just a solid oval cut out. It deforms the bokeh, so the only thing that is affected by the filter is out of focus and bright light.
    A good, cheap option is to get a piece of black cardboard and cut an oval out of it. Slap it in front of your lens and there you go - instant oval bokeh. You can also do this with other shapes.
    Like this so people can keep money in their pockets.

    First of all, wow. That's a good length film. I think anything you could do to help it run faster is to uninstall some stuff. There are some really good computer cleaners on the internet (if you feel like trusting them) and they can increase speed by 75%. Bear in mind, however, that many pro filmmakers just wait it out. I've heard some pros talk about 72 hour render times

    Forget that. You want to see beautiful anamorphic you go back and look at films of the 70s and 80s which is the look JJ is influenced by. Close Encounters, Blade Runner and the early films of John Carpenter like Halloween, The Fog and Christine. That's good anamorphic reference right there.

    if all you want is the anamorphic lens flares there are a bunch of ways to do that DIY for under $5. I did it by just getting a regular lens filter for my 35-70mm fd lens at the pawn shop and then I just scratched verticle lines into the filter. TH-cam it.

    There are lenses available that don't make you double-focus and work fine handheld even. Their "gotcha" is you typically need a close-up diopter to sharpen up wide aperture shots. My Century Optics adapter is sharp without a diopter opened up to F2.8 and doesn't vignette unless I'm using a taking lens wider than 18mm on the GH2.

    FYI, if you had two DVX100s you're definitely playing in the prosumer end of the pool. Those are $3500 cameras, two of the best the DV format saw at any price. The Canon 550d is also around the street price of the GH2 I've got. I use mostly inexpensive, vintage Nikkor lenses now for their character coupled with the digital back and my anamorphic was an ebay $650 find, fyi. It can be expensive but doesn't have to be terribly so.

    You can also get a split focus diopter. Old school, and it can be pretty cheesy looking sometimes, but look it up on the google. Interesting look.

    No need to do complex equations to be able to correct your anamorphic shots. I found a diagram online of the different aspect ratios for film. Download the image, place it over your footage, reduce the opacity, and adjust the footage as necessary

    Install magic lantern on your 60D, there's a 2.35:1 frame guide setting. What it does is superimpose the anamorphic bars on the top and bottom of your footage through the Live View screen.

    @Jed Darlington-Roberts I think he shoots with that lens, because it give it more of a "vintage" look. Even though colour gradeing can give that effect too. It might also be the cheapness of that lens, Full Frame Canon lenses are mostly like $700+

    As for converting, if you're just cropping, use the letter box effect on after effects, if you're squishing it, do some math and adjust the vertical scale. On your 60D, you just have to wing it, there's no setting for it.

    Magic Lantern has a feature that gives you cropmarks. You can use the default ones they have, or make your own entirely.

    You can use a 62mm-58mm step-down ring. They cost a few dollars on ebay or in most camera shops.

    Look up Magic Lantern. It's a firmware replacement that provides you with crop marks in camera. I don't know if they have a 60D version yet, but it's available for t2i, t3i, and 5d mkii for sure. I installed it for exactly this functionality, but since then, I have realized that I just couldn't live without all the other features it provides.

    You can download some external firmware called "Magic Lantern", it comes with some 2:35:1 crop marks, and you can make some of your own, then you can crop the footage in post. :)

    I believe all of them would be compatible. Seeing as you're using a clamp to attach the anamorphic lens to your main lens I see really no reason why you'd be unable to use them on a t3i.
    of course you'll have to shoot pretty telephoto (around 50mm and higher on the t3i from what I've heard/read) but still... it's compatible and that's what you asked for.

    HEY YOU!! you can put fishing string over the center of your lens and it will give you a DIY anamorphic effect! I used it all the time when I still used a camcorder! Keep shootin!

    Learning post has far more flexibility than a single lens ever would.
    That was mainly my point. Invest in post? or Invest in a specific use lens.
    I know the pros and cons of its usage. The point is to achieve an effect to evoke a certain emotion or atmosphere.
    You have much more flexibility and variety in post. Regardless of the authenticity of the effect itself.

    I would suggest you to edit every scene in a different sequence, that way everything will be more organized. Also, you can use proxies if you think your pc won't be able to handle the large project.

    With the CineMorph filter you lose about 1 stop since it kind of acts like a closed down iris/aperture on the front of the lens. This can be good to for outdoor daylight filming. With the Flare/Streak filter you lose no light as it doesnt have the bokeh shaping element.

    The fake ones are distracting, definitely. They're contrived by nature. Naturally occurring they can be amazingly beautiful, like in Close Encounters and Blade Runner.

    Hey the 7D is not a full frame sensor. It is a crop sensor. The exact name of the sensor is APS-C. I bet the filter would look really good with the 7D. Being that since some of the image is cropped out with the 7D, you won't run into as many vignetting problems. Get one and let me know how it is! ;)

    That and the distorted stretched bokeh (the blurred part of the image).
    The blur does a lot more for your image then you might think.
