Sounds like most of the people who resent his opinion of the Marvels are filtering their reaction through a largely political prism (ie, "misogynist, "white," etc)
You know that Dan is one of the only authentic and unbiased critics when you have both radical ends of the fandom claiming him as their own and disavowing him at the same time
What % of people do you think are in the middle? Where they just want to watch a good movie rather than wanting it to be horrible for making fun or claiming even a pile of shit is diamond
@@bibek12332 That's really hard to tell, cause the people in the middle more often than not don't care enough to voice their opinions and leave behind a comment. I'd argue most people in the middle won't even bother looking up reviews for the movie at all.
@@bibek12332I think most people are in the middle but what sets dan apart is he also is critical. You’ll get the “nice reviewer” but he just uselessly glosses over stuff & the “negative reviewer” who just lets emotions guide him over actual facts & ironically think he’s nuanced.
@@mopnemthe nice reviewer certainly uses emotions or identity of people involved to brush over criticisms as well. They also frequently demonize the other side as ists and isms even if they're reasoned out like Dan or other "negative" reviewers
@@JohnGoetzGaming Good points, If forced to choose I’d prefer the “nice reviewer” though because he generally hides/lacks the snowflake superiority complex that kinda grates me with the “negative ones”
The best scene in this movie is when Ms. Marvel is trying to save the Skrulls and Captain Marvel tells her to leave them. I want to see whatever movie that scene came from.
I was happy to find out that i didn't think the Marvels was as bad as Dan thought it was. But I'm really sorry to hear the way the internet has treated you because of your review. I appreciate what you do, Dan.
He did say those things and he stands by them which I respect, however he had to know there would be blow back, Dan is not new this and he's handling it with grace as usual.
The first half of the movie was surprisingly fun, and I thought "what's Dan talking about? This isn't that bad"......then it felt like halfway through the movie an entirely different creative and productive team took over...and that new team was recruited from a high school drama class. And great call out on "Spaceballs", I was thinking the same thing. Ha
Dan doesn’t have to soften his tone on the Marvels. It’s his opinion. My opinion is that “I had fun at the theater with my date. We both laughed and enjoyed the movie”. It’s not a masterpiece, but it entertained us for an hour and a half. That’s all we wanted. Everyone else can feel how they like.
I found tje initial review fair. Dan is not a person with an agenda so to speak like a lot of TH-cam critics. I know people like myself (Black, female) who were also like "this is not great. It's been poorly edited and hacked to death"
Yeah, it’s very obvious who is pushing a certain type of agenda, and who actually cares about films and cinema, and Dan is very much the latter. I have been a huge marvel fanboy for years but this and Antman were both pretty disappointing stories.
Same impression I had. It was a Trainwreck of a movie with a couple of funny moments and maybe some good action scenes. But plot wise I was in constant baffled state
Agendas in either direction absolutely are annoying, especially the ones that go after fans or accuse them of all the ists and isms if someone doesn't like something. I know Dan addressed the other side of that coin but MAN the ones he didn't address have cropped up severely the last few years
As someone who LOVED this movie, you did a great job breaking down the pros and cons of the movie. You're a good faith critic and that's what makes me always listen to your takes
Dan is one of my top three movie critics that I trust. I respect his perspective and authenticity. I was surprised at how negative he was with the Marvels but his reasons make total sense. Let’s move on. 😎
Who else do you recommend? Not to advertise them but legitimately interested. Petty much everyone else on TH-cam I’ve grown tired of but wouldn’t mind examples from people with possibly similar sensibilities
He was not fair at all and because most of what he said was opinion it can’t be discounted. One thing he said in non spoiler review was that all of Fury’s lines were jokes he said not downplaying literally. That was 100% not true not even half his lines are jokes and even if it were The character often makes jokes. I don’t think it was intentional but it was not professional and gives oxygen to all the misogynist and bad faith reviewers and fans that are eating it up. And hes telling people to stay away from the film? He’s a problem. It was in no way shape or form as bad as he made it seem igaf. I’m not even gonna watch this for him to double back or double down I don’t care anymore. I’m appalled and can’t take him seriously after that.
Given your track record you are a trustworthy with great integrity. You don't do clickbait, paid reviews, hate women, shill for Disney or any of those wishful thinking things that viewers who disagree with you desperately want to believe as they flail about in their insecure need to be agreed with. Please keep going as you have.
I don't understand people who need, or rather DEMAND, that critics share their exact opinions. No one should get actually angry about movie reviews, especially Marvel movie reviews. I enjoy your content, even when I disagree, keep doing your thing!
Some people can be absolutely bonkers. You made your thoughts on the film perfectly clear, there was no agenda or pretext. Your reviews are very NOT Surface, and that's why we watch your reviews. Or, well, at least, that's why i do. Everyone is entitled to like or dislike any movie they choose, especially Film Critics. Keep up the awesome content Dan..
To quote Loki's Season 2 finale: "It's a scaling problem". The MCU began making 1-2 movies a year and didn't scale up to 3 movies a year until nearly a decade had past. Yet when Disney+ was created, they started with 3 series a year. On top of that, of course, is that TV makes up many more hours than films do. We're not just mad about how disappointing The Marvels was, but rather that disappointment is compounded with the anger about Eternals, Multiverse of Madness, She-Hulk, Quantumania, Secret Invasion etc. I really wonder if Marvel will start taking projects off their calendar (Thunderbolts and Blade are prime contenders)
All these movie are executive-led, not writer-led. That explains all problems: scaling, rushed production, re-shoots, formulaic stories, empty characters, lack of creativity, … The historic movies we love are all passion projects of a writer who *sells* it to executives to get it made.
@@CaulkMongler It’s planned. But the rumour is they’ve gone through 5 scripts, and the actor was close to quitting. That’s the problem… no writer went to Disney saying: “I have an amazing idea for Blade!!” They schedule the movie first, then hire writers and hope they’ll come up with a good idea.
"A scaling problem? That's what Victor told you?! Wow, no, there's no scaling problem. The temporal loom is a failsafe. It deletes everything except the sacred timeline" We are going to see the temporal loom working out in real life when some projects get "deleted" from now on
Dan, spot on. You are one of my trusted critics and I use you as a model critic with my grade 5 students. You are genuine, considerate, thoughtful, and analytical. Bravo, sir!
I was very surprised by the strong negativity of the review, but it also let me set my expectations and enjoy the movie on its own terms. It’s good to have respectful discussions and this channel has always been the place for it.
The movie wasn’t good and the amount of clearly cut scenes was insane. Kamala sentenced Aladna to die where the only reaction to it is Carol saying to not be like her. No moment is allowed to breathe and there could have been a real conversation about Kamala coming to terms with hard decisions.
Just wanted to let you know that your first segment really resonated with me. I also have so many issues with the recent mcu content. But I also hate being lumped in with the manosphere club that use the recent bad films as a convenient scape goat for their obvious sexism. It’s exhausting.
Park Seo Joon was in London for MONTHS filming the Marvels... Dan's theory his storyline got cut tracks. What a terrible way to pander to his fans by marketing him as such an integral part of the film, when he was in a glorified cameo.
Dan is probably the most honest TH-cam critic there is. I thought the movie wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. But I do understand why alot of people wouldn't like the film.
@@Erasureeraser But it's a bad point. He criticised the movie for what he wanted it to be, not for what the movie wanted to be. The movie was stupid on purpose so you don't feel bad for the thousands or even millions of people who die because of the protagonists. It's nearly two hours of humour, slapstick, action and cuteness. It's really good at that. Dan's review is like saying The Godfather isn't a good movie because it doesn't have enough jokes.
@@GothamClive "Was stupid on purpose" That doesn't excuse how messy, jumbled, convoluted, badly paced the movie was. That doesn't excuse how absolutely terrible the villain was. That doesn't excuse how the comedy in this movie falls completely flat. Just because it's stupid on purpose doesn't mean that it's a good movie if the story isn't compelling. I mean, look at Guardians of the Galaxy, it had some comedic moments because the characters started off as douchebag and thieves but James Gunn managed to tell a compelling story so that the audience could take the characters seriously whenever the movie needs to be. You get a lot of fun moments but you also get some emotional scene like when Groot sacrifice himself to save the Guardians from Ronan's ship collapsing and Gunn did the latter perfectly because he fleshed out Groot and Rocket's relationship perfectly. Whereas this movie, you don't care about a single character involved because the previous movies does a poor job setting them up (aside Ms Marvel) and by the time the movie was about to meet it's third act where you have a big fight with the villain, you just don't care because the movie does a poor job handling them with cringe dialogue and an undeveloped villain
Dan there are many knowledgeable reviewers on youtube but what is rare is integrity, which is why I appreciate your viewpoint. What is interesting is the intense feeling on Disney's handling of these IPs, and how sometimes innocents get dragged in.
Really appreciate your thoughts, as someone who is not a critic you often take my feelings and put them into (pretty well-spoken!) words. I enjoyed the movie but I definitely came out of it feeling like there were a LOT of flaws including a lot of the stuff you mentioned - I didn’t particularly care for the Flerken subplot either and was super interested in that moment on the Skrull planet like you were. Looking forward to future videos!
Long story short: don't pay attention to the crazies. The fact that some times one side is pissed at you and some times the other, means that you are doing your job well.
@@malashebad6181 How can standing your own ground while adhering to your principles be considered .. "middleground"???? Are you suggesting he should abandon his principles , pick a side and join the lunacy?
@malashebad6181 the idea of the middle ground fallacy is only useful for highlighting that the middle position is not inherently correct. It doesn't change the fact that extreme positions are usually incorrect as they are by nature the most severe possible interpretation of a given phenomenon or event.
I, too, am a story guy. If the story sucks, the movie sucks. It's like the "spine" of the movie. To say, "the story sucks, but the movie was still okay" is like saying, "your spine is really fucked up, but you should be able to walk normally". 🤣
I'm a story guy too, but occasionally sometimes a movie is just "dumb" fun. I think Black Adam was a bad movie, but I had fun watching it. That being said I haven't watched a 2nd time so there's that. I couldn't get behind the Marvels because I don't think Capt Marvel is a likeable character. Maybe Brie Larson was miscast in the role because she just seems wooden. In this movie it seems they tried to give a personality but it still doesn't work. At no point do I ever feel connected to the character.
Jason X has an absurd story. I’ve watched it at least a dozen times, and I laugh and shake my head and enjoy it every time. By myself and with friends. I understand what you’re saying, I just don’t think it applies every time…for me. 🤷 That being said, I enjoyed the Marvels alongside my date, and we walked out the theater happy.
I think it’s similar to my experience recently watching FNAF: I clearly didn’t really enjoy it as much as a FNAF, I’m not gonna crap on their experience, but I’m a viewer too, and someone who can have an experience watching a movie in a theater. I can appreciate movies from many different aspects, whether it be costuming, character studies, set design, editing choices, “fight montages”, etc. Giving my honest input doesn’t have to mean I can only pick the most extreme of two sides.
People just want to seek out echo chambers these days. No surprise that people with actual independent views will be attacked by both sides. You're one of the cool ones, Dan, don't worry about it.
Brie Larson said: "I don't want a 40 year old white man's opinion...".basically "Dan's opinion" and..when your lead actress says things like this, how can you not expect the "Internet" to take sides. ..if your main actress starts a "war" with a part of the audience, what did you think would happen?...😮
I understand the frustration, but making a five year crusade bc of these comments is pretty sad and a waste of time. Not saying you do that, but other creators on TH-cam definitely do.
Brie Larson said something five years ago about one movie. And it has been made into a crusade that has lated HALF A DECADE. Actual wars have been fought and settled in less time.
@@DanMurrellMovies Yes, that is true, I suppose what prevents this from stopping is that in a war, either... one side wins or both sides sit down to negotiate...I suppose The Marvels failing at the box office would be enough to say "one side lost"...and now we could be at peace...maybe. As a fan I just want to see Marvel make good movies....

I used to be part of a group that consistently committed to the Thursday night showings for every MCU film from Civil War until the pandemic, and we tried to get the band back through this sludge. It faded out and we don't do that anymore. We're checked out on the MCU. Can't bother to watch the D+ shows, have no faith in any of the movies. No Way Home and Guardians 3 are the only things that I believe anybody really cared about seeing after End Game and Far From Home.
LOL, oh I just love the Spaceballs comparison! I didn't even think of that until you JUST said it. lmao Thanks for doing what ya do, Dan. You've always been my favorite reviewer and I appreciate the work you do for us.
There is one thing I’m getting tired of in Marvel movies, the "villain voice." If Dar Benn had been written & played as a real person trying to save her planet it could have been a better film.
It's good that you can express your true feelings and criticisms about the movie, only then Marvel can learn. but I'm glad you always do it in a respectful way, and don't talk about politics or make fun of the actors or the economic failure of this film, it seems that many who call themselves critics or cinephiles have lost their professionalism and objectivity.
I don’t know if Marvel will learn…. I don’t think they follow Dan. But hopefully, the humble box office will prompt them to think things over - from a billion dollar movie to one of the lowest MCU opening.
Don’t let the haters get you down. You have a consistent viewpoint, and I appreciate that. That being said, I did like the movie. I thought the story was basic, but clear enough, so it allowed me to enjoy the fun romp. It will become a regular Friday night relax rewatch movie for me.
I truly enjoyed the film. I saw a few scenes that could have used more fleshing out, but it didn’t bring down the experience for me. This was probably the most “fun” I had in an MCU movie since Shang Chi.
This is the first marvel movie in years that i didn't go to see in theatres (if they weren't closed down). I'm not even one of those crazy anti brie larson people , just that there was nothing that grabbed my attention to go out of my way to see it.
Well I guess you're not a crazy in the other direction either which is good cause some people will go see something just to stick it to the haters or what they think the "haters" are based on Twitter speak lol
It felt like season 2 of Ms. Marvel. But in movie format. Too bad. I actually liked Capt. Marvel in this. Better than the first movie. Brie Larson gets alot of flack. But I thought she was actually good in this. It's the script and the villain. Poorly written. If it was a cartoon/animated movie then it's quite enjoyable. For kids.
@@ErasureeraserI thought she was actually quite good in this. More emotion with her interaction with Monica and Kamala. The story is messy. Forgettable villain.
@@klass_1221 She's not bad, I think a little bit better than the first but I don't think it's like an actual great performance yet. Marvel still has no clear direction what Captain Marvel actually is
Damn brother, discourse around this movie is wild. Regardless of differences of opinion, thanks for sharing your thoughts on the film! I thought it was fun and I had a great time but you're not wrong about a lot of the problems. Either way, keep up the good work and grats on the marriage!
I formed my own opinion about _The Marvels._ Loved the kitty cats, loved Iman Vellani, Brie Larson and Teyonah Parris. I didn't mind the singing and the princess dress, but I didn't really love those things either. It's whatever, that was fine. But the writing...geez Louise. The villain is just dumb as a box of rocks. And the writers apparently think none of the viewers have any understanding of real-world science whatsoever. The air thing, the water thing, those were bad enough, but the _star_ thing? Yeah, when stars run out of fuel, they don't just go wimpy and dark. They blow up. But this movie seems to think that Hala's star is like a big bonfire or something. It just needed to be lit up again, by 'energy'. Ridiculous.
Rule No.1 of Online Discourse you should always remember is that you can never win, so sticking to your guns and being honest is the best path you can rake, regardless of reactions.
I feel so bad for Iman Vellani. Literally the only part of the movie I liked. I didn't even care about the Beast cameo. Ms Marvel had a lot of potential in a time when the MCU wasnt so creatively bankrupt
I would have liked just 20-30 minutes more for an act two scene that had the three of them going in different directions after failing to work together. Going it alone doesn’t work for them, either, but it would heighten the emotional throughline.
Apparently the original cut was going to be 40min longer, but it’s hard to say if all that additional footage would’ve made it better. I’m more positive than negative on the film, and part of the fun is its rapid pace.
Kelsey Grammer's voice really is an amazing match for Beast, but a full cg version standing in front of those ridiculous silver X-Doors has the opposite of it's intended effect on me. I am entirely uninterested in seeing the Fox X-Men come back in any capacity. Marvel can't even navigate these things with it's own baggage, let alone all that would come with trying to bring these versions of the characters back. They're all inferior versions by today's standards anyways.
I disagreed with Dan on his review, as I really liked the movie. Yes, I agree with his issues on the movie, but I forgave some of those issues as I wanted some fun after the serious nature of Guardians, the new direction of Ant-Man and how Thor took it way to far. I even loved the marketing of this movie. And yes, this was not a great movie, by any stretch of my forgiveness. But for anyone to question Dan’s motives or thoughts need to spend some more time here! In Dan we trust. 💪🏽💪🏽
I really appreciate your arguments, Dan, both the positives and the negatives. You shouldn't take the criticism too hard. If the extreme voices from both sides of the argument don't appreciate your opinion, it means it doesn't resonate in any of their echo chambers 😊
I think Marvels big problem right now is that they were able to take B-List heroes like Iron Man and Captain America, important in their respective Universe sure but middiling in ours, and turn them into giants. They believe that they can do that with anyone. Throw Echo on screen and she will become the next Punisher. Maybe if this was 2008 when all eyes weren't on them, Marvel was hungry and the most importantly the stories were there. Now were more connected than we ever were so the second a studio tries to pull the rug over our eyes its called out for what it is. Nobody asked for this and if you're going to do it in this climate of the decline of the Superhero genre, you better come out swinging.
God watching Marvel over the past 2-3 years has been like watching the slowest most telegraphed train wreck ever just get worse and worse. “It didn’t need to be this way”. Somewhere in this is a multiple year-long story of EPIC problems I think. I hope we at least get to know more about it one day.
@@playedout148 I feel if they had executed on the non standard formats Disney + allows with the same innovation and creativity of MCU phase 2 this wouldn’t be the case actually but yes, as it stands, you’re right. It’s such a shame.
Dan, you're a great critic. Whenever I wanted to see a movie, I always relied on your reviews so i don't go wasting my time and money on behalf of Hollywood and Disney's agenda. Keep doing what you're doing man.
It's sad we're living in a world where Dan has to start a video explaining his reasoning for his opinion for 6 minutes due to people blaming him all kinds of stuff for not liking a shitty movie.
the best part of the Panderverse special was when Kyle's mom saw that Cartman was now an adult black woman she didn't react at all, then when asked about it she says "yeah, I'm fine with it" like who cares. makes characters whatever, let's see how it goes. who cares. best line of the whole special.
I think you missed the joke there. She's reacting that way to not get in trouble or seem racist. It's the clowning on people saying they don't notice color
"Put a chick in it and make her lame and gay" basically describes all the movies flopping at the box office in the last 2 or 3 years. They forgot to add "and raceswap here".
Everyone knew it was going to be terrible. Marvel is terrible now. Just accept that people have been saying this for a long time now. Time to accept it.
Your opinion is your opinion and you have every right to speak your mind, that’s why we’re all here in the 1st place. I went to see it and I thought it was cool, some parts kinda took me out of the movie but the highlight was the new character Keep doing your thing man. I enjoy your channel for you opinion.
I liked Captain Marvel, I haven't seen this new one but I think I will like it BUT I cannot wait for Brie to be out of this franchise. She is a wonderful talent and she must be exhausted by the toxicity of the superhero-films fan base. They turn everything into something radioactive, they really ruin the joy of films. Dan expressed his opinion respectfully, he doesn't deserve to be caught in that toxicity either.
I think this is the first time I'm in complete opposition to Dan's take on a movie - I don't think it comes close to being an "unmitigated disaster" as he called out before (and I'm someone who thought Captain Marvel completely fell flat in the third act), but I can understand the points he makes here. Totally agree the villain was pretty one note and just served as a means for the story to move forward, but I thought everything else in the movie was fun enough to not be as terrible as I was expecting it to be. Definitely feel like D+ and the quantity of MCU content is sucking the life out of these projects though, so I really hope we see way less shows in the service of higher quality output.
It’s unfair that people are picking on Dan and assuming that he’s misogynist for not liking this. He made it very clear that his problems were with the story and not Brie and the rest of the cast, who are all very talented actors
Having not seen the movie I find it absolutely hilarious that the villains plan is ripped from space balls 😂😂 like you can’t write this stuff anymore. The jokes write themselves
Yeah it's hilarious. Its either an intentional troll or a function of media illiteracy. If you aren't trolling, don't use the plot from one of the most famous satirical films of all time that is making fun of a big budget space adventure.
I watched it the other day and though I thought the villains plan was totally ridiculous, Spaceballs didn't come to mi mind. How did I not connect the two, being Spaceballs one of my childhood movies? LOL
I love the characters, but the plot makes no sense. It felt like they didn't finish filming it & tried to fix it in editing, but couldn't do the usual post fixes because of the strikes.
Dan during the first five is minutes of the video- describes the internet at large. I’m admitting to the ultimate sin and commenting before I even finish the video: thank you Dan. I have no doubt the in depth breakdown will be insightful and interesting and is the reason I continue to watch your content regardless of whether I agree or disagree with your take.

It made me laugh and nearly made my cry in joy at the end. I know you would be the first to say that’s individual preferences when it comes down to it, yet I am surprised on how different we feel about the film. My God Dan...most of the people who leave negative comments, leave negative comments on a hundred other reviews. That's how they function. And honestly, as a viewer, I wouldn't have known...or cared. I subscribe to YOUR channel because I like what YOU say. Period. Point. Blank.
I’m one of the people who really liked The Marvels. It was fun, funny, I enjoyed the power switching action scenes, Iman did great. Definitely feel you were too harsh, but hey, feel how you want. Your track record shows you’ve always been honest and fair and NEVER hateful towards a specific person or group of people ❤
It's enjoyable that's fair enough. But didn't you feel it all a bit rushed? There is literally no time for conflict or introspection. Everything moves at 9G speed. The villain offers no real challenge actually. The resolution is also so dumb because apparently it took 30 years for Cap. Marv to figure out that she could have just charged a fkin sun which literally takes her a few seconds to accomplish. Absolute garbage from a story standpoint and by garbage I mean that there's no effort in even trying to go through the requirements of a plot. But fun if you're interested in a couple of good fight scenes but Marvel did way better way before
I think the conspiracy theory that people are going to good movies just to pan them because somehow that's profitable is just as ludicrous as the conspiracy theory that people are going to bad movies to praise them because somehow that's profitable. Is that so unreasonable?
@@nathansossai So you think Dan actually likes the movie, but is pretending not to? Or that the people who went to see it and then gave it the lowest Cinemascore in the MCU (tied with Quantumania and Eternals) are pretending?

I highly doubt Brie has any concerns if the film does well. She's ready to retire the character and move on. Her little input is her taking one footstep back and slowly pass over the torch. She made ONE little comment five years ago that still gets online reminders. She said what she meant, and she's does not regret what she said. She's just at a point that she's has moved way beyond from being reminded online what she said freaking 5 years ago. She's has done a million things with herself in the last 5 years. The haters are still sitting on their Twinkie behinds butt hurt about what she said 5 years ago.
You're being fair, it was the culmination of every mistake they've made so far, rolled into one sloppy bore. One of the many problems they need to fix is the silly comics accurate costumes. They never made Hawkeye look like he does in the comics for a good reason. Binary looks absurd.
Thanks for saying that. Binary's costume made me long for the days of black leather in the X-Men films. It might've worked with better lighting but as is it was a train wreck.
I shared your video with a few people because you are generally very fair about movies - you are NOT on the hate train and clearly not a shill. I want a good story and want the characters I love treated with respect, not used as clowns. The MCU used to work for me, now it doesn’t because they left those things behind.
I had a pretty good time even though I felt there was a lot of awkwardness & not in a good way. It didn't live up to the potential these 3 have, The 3 characters deserved better. A more nuanced antagonist, better pacing and removing some unnecessary scenes (like the singing) & the prince) would have made it better.
Totally respect your reviews, criticism & explanations Dan! I know the movie isn’t a masterpiece but I really liked it waaay more than expected! Saw it in IMAX last night and I wouldn’t mind rewatching it whereas I can’t imagine rewatching Quantumania 😂
I liked the movie! I've also been following your reviews so i was quite surprised when you said it was an unmitigated disaster, and did not recommend. Thankfully i watched your reviews after the movie itself, but it didn't make me entrench myself further into the "i liked it and i dont care what you say" camp. I appreciated your perspective. Like many others, i found it enjoyable, especially kamala and her family. I agree that many parts felt hodge podge- it felt to me like they wanted to promote the 3 of them as a team, but there was no real glue to them- carol and monica were from so many movies ago (also, how did monica age from preteen to a full grown adult while carol barely aged 😂), and Kamala's obvious idol worship of carol. I would've appreciated them having more scenes together, (like the training montage) such as the convo you mentioned between kamala and carol about making hard choices, and monica and carol's awkwardness not being resolved too simply. Ultimately if they had made it clearer who was the main hero of the group, and carol's character being fleshed out more, i would've enjoyed the story more. For me the villain was alright, you could tell she was never meant to be a big bad but just "evil minion surviving to now become the evil boss", but i did feel sympathetic towards her. The skrull part and fury felt very detached from secret invasion though. But i did like the action scenes, iman vellani's energy for sure, and ultimately it was a simplistic story with likeable people in it. It doesnt make it great, but i dont think this is the worst mcu film just yet. It follows through on its stakes (unlike quantumania), and there is longer term impact. All that said, i found it amazing (not in a good way) that Dan you had such pushback. Agree to disagree on this film, but you're still one of my favourite channels, and i will still look forward to your reviews!
Dan many critics share your opinion and the ones who liked the film said they also had problems with the story, editing, and pacing. It’s sad people are such dicks and feel they need to project their own insecurities onto someone else. I appreciate all your work, keep being you.
I think people forget that flawed films can be fun and a movie with few flaws isn't always a fun movie. If someone had fun they get mad because the review doesn't gloss over the flaws. Because the internet is so full of people telling you that you aren't allowed to enjoy a movie they see attacks that aren't really there.
People didn't forget that, the problem is that when a movie is having way too much fun, it could ruined some of the emotional scenes when the movie have way too much joke

I enjoyed the movie, Kamala especially drove it for me and is what I'm most looking forward to more of, but during the Flirkin scene there was definitely a moment where I thought "yeah this isn't going to work for everyone." I'm also very much character over story, make me care about the people (other than the villain) and I'm in. I'm surprised you disliked it as much as you did, but it makes sense.
It's interesting to hear your take on this, because I consider myself a story person but also don't understand how it's possible to separate characters from story. Critiques of fiction are a great way to realize how people see the world in different ways.
Watched the movie today. I thought it was reasonably fine. My two narrative issues were these: 1. How was Kamala able to extend her large hand without wearing a bangle? 2. In Captain Marvel, Goose eats the Tesseract and then some Kree. He later vomits up the Tesseract but no Kree (I figure "oh, digestive acid dissolved the people and their clothing but still can't dissolve the cube, makes sense"), but this time around, Goose is able to vomit up Kree and people completely unharmed.
I agree with you, Dan. I thought Marvel did a pretty good job with the previous phases: the stories were interesting and you cared about the characters, culminating in the Avengers movies. They weren't meant to be Citizen Kane, but they were fun and -for the most part- coherent. They did it much better than DC, in my opinion. But this phase is mostly a mess. I wanted to like the Marvels, but it fell short -I felt the same way about Barbie, and it has absolutely nothing to do with strong female leads (all my favorite books have strong female leads), and everything to do eith unsatisfying plots. That said, Barbie eas much better than The Marvels.
Just watched it 2 days ago and posted this in my discord Like the movie isn't great. But I liked the characters. The villain was kind of dumb and how she lost was like... What? Also how Monica's story ended was just stupid and kind of out of nowhere. Like I see what they were trying to do but it just didn't land or make much sense. And unless they plan on giving her a solo movie or tv series (which they don't) I don't see how or why they'd bring her back. (Said this before watching the mid credits scene) Then the stuff with Carol is like yeah nice but like all those people died but I guess they have to end that little storyline but also all those people still died. Also it's like exactly 90 minutes and the pacing is bad. Everything felt rushed but at the same time I found myself thinking there's still so much movie left (there wasn't) cause a normal superhero movie would have another 30 minutes on the run time. I was in this weird place of wanting it to hurry up and end but also thinking everything was happening way too fast. I like Kamala tho. Monica can do all the things I'd let Kamala's mom do to me and more. And Carol is good with them around. Was it a good movie? Not really. But the Marvel's were likeable enough to keep me interested. I mean I actually fell asleep during Thor Love and Thunder so it's definitely not the worst Marvel movie in my opinion. I'm more on the liking it side than hate. Will I ever watch it again? Probably not. But to be fair I don't watch most movies more than once. Like I wouldn't turn it off if it was on USA or TNT in the middle of the day and nothing else was on. I also wouldn't stop for it if I was flipping through the channels tho
Yeah, I just saw it and it we better than I thought the reviews made it out to be. I really liked Ms Marvel and thought for the most part her jokes landed. Her enthusiasm is just great and even if she's not the best dramatic actor, the contrast from seeing her happy makes it work. I liked brie and I thought the lady who played Monica was just sorta... there. Another good thing I'll say is the action was above average and it felt like 4 decent action scenes instead of your typical 3. That's a big plus in a movie that has a bad story lol. It was embarrassingly bad by the end. Halfway through the movie, the character chemistry and action had me mostly liking the movie. Then, over time, it just felt like the lazy writing added up until it was too much. Also, a musical planet is almost like they were trying to torture the viewer. Just seeing these random planets get destroyed by a generic villain and yet not caring at all. As it got a little more dramatic, the dialog never made me care. You could actually watch great actors seeming average because they had nothing to work with. I also thought the final fight felt so rushed that it was kinda comical. She also got beat up pretty easily, which surprised me. Then her whole plan just fell apart like a joke by the end. It made me appreciate that antman at least had the basic structure of a good story even if it hit the mark. I'm a sucker for fanfare though, so the after credit scene was random but cool to me.
Dan is a good movie critic, in this case i agree compleatly but i know there will be movies that i disagree with him, the last spiderman live action for example.
I love your point about Kamala seeing the dying skrulls, and I agree that that (and other ideas) were a little undercooked. I think it would’ve been great to have a Captain Marvel 2, and a Ms. Marvel movie, connected as a direct sequel. As it stands now with The Marvels, moments are introduced, exposition was given, and the characters would resolve them and hug within minutes. Wish the movie would’ve time to breathe. And Dan, thanks for your reviews. I know you’re mindful, respectful, and objective. It’s sad that expressing your opinion creates so much blowback. Having been a fan for years, I know that you too really wanted this movie to be more. Can’t wait to hear your next reviews!
even though I fully disagree with the review never have I thought Dan's integrity as a critic should be questioned. I know this was just his opinion of the movie not some type of bandwagon on the Disney and Brie Larson hate train
I trust Dan's opinion. Doesn't mean I always agree with it completely, but I trust, respect, and value his authenticity and honesty.
My thoughts exactly 💯💯
agree, i seek his opinion on finance and home repair as well like a combo of Tim the Toolman Taylor and Gordon Gekko
Agree, as long as he has a point for what he's saying, I can understand why he disliked or liked a movie
Sounds like most of the people who resent his opinion of the Marvels are filtering their reaction through a largely political prism (ie, "misogynist, "white," etc)
Personally this helped my younger sister fight her coma, come on Dan
You’ll get the “nice reviewer” but he just uselessly glosses over stuff & the “negative reviewer” who just lets emotions guide him over actual facts & ironically think he’s nuanced.

groovy man
The best scene in this movie is when Ms.
Same.
Yeah I still think he was a bit harsh, but his criticisms are all valid. I just enjoyed the good more than I hated the bad.
He 100% deserves it
@@ScreenFavoritesYou’re not a nice person
But plot wise I was in constant baffled state
I agree, Dan has no agenda. He doesn't even own a daily planner
Agendas in either direction absolutely are annoying, especially the ones that go after fans or accuse them of all the ists and isms if someone doesn't like something. I know Dan addressed the other side of that coin but MAN the ones he didn't address have cropped up severely the last few years
I loved it and my husband loved it and my friends loved it. None of us have an ‘’agenda’’. It’s exhausting being told that I or we do.

agreed. I enjoyed the movie, but Dan makes good points and I respect that
Dan is one of my top three movie critics that I trust. I respect his perspective and authenticity. I was surprised at how negative he was with the Marvels but his reasons make total sense. Let’s move on. 😎

Why were you surprised? The movie is dog 💩.

That explains all problems: scaling, rushed production, re-shoots, formulaic stories, empty characters, lack of creativity, …
The historic movies we love are all passion projects of a writer who *sells* it to executives to get it made.
Love & Thunder too.
Is Blade going to be part of the MCU?
@@CaulkMongler It’s planned. But the rumour is they’ve gone through 5 scripts, and the actor was close to quitting.
That’s the problem… no writer went to Disney saying: “I have an amazing idea for Blade!!” They schedule the movie first, then hire writers and hope they’ll come up with a good idea.
"A scaling problem? That's what Victor told you?! Wow, no, there's no scaling problem. The temporal loom is a failsafe. It deletes everything except the sacred timeline"
We are going to see the temporal loom working out in real life when some projects get "deleted" from now on
Dan, spot on.
"Don't ask questions. Consume product and then get excited for next product."
When you get attacked by both sides it means you are the most centered, fair and balanced.
Dan is probably the most honest TH-cam critic there is. I thought the movie wasn't as bad as I expected it to be. But I do understand why alot of people wouldn't like the film.
Dan, Mauler, Littleplatoon, Critical Drinker, RLM, and a few others are quite honest
he's as honest as Abe Lincoln. I wish Dan would run for president from his log cabin
As long as Dan has a point why he didn't like it, that's already fine

@@malashebad6181 How can standing your own ground while adhering to your principles be considered .. "middleground"???? Are you suggesting he should abandon his principles , pick a side and join the lunacy?
@malashebad6181
the idea of the middle ground fallacy is only useful for highlighting that the middle position is not inherently correct.
A story can suck and the movie still be ok!! Thats cos there are other components e.g the sction sequence may be good! So its not a new thing really!!

Ridiculous.

As much as I concur, it's a little hard when ones a teenager who can't fly.
agree, 31 minutes would have been 1 minute too much
Apparently the original cut was going to be 40min longer, but it’s hard to say if all that additional footage would’ve made it better. I’m more positive than negative on the film, and part of the fun is its rapid pace.
The movie didnt really have anything to connect acts 2 and 3, id have liked something there
Kelsey Grammer's voice really is an amazing match for Beast, but a full cg version standing in front of those ridiculous silver X-Doors has the opposite of it's intended effect on me. I am entirely uninterested in seeing the Fox X-Men come back in any capacity. Marvel can't even navigate these things with it's own baggage, let alone all that would come with trying to bring these versions of the characters back. They're all inferior versions by today's standards anyways.

Haters take up so much oxygen. Sigh...

"Put a chick in it and make her lame and gay" basically describes all the movies flopping at the box office in the last 2 or 3 years. They forgot to add "and raceswap here".
@@Finozzi96 Killers of the Flower Moon flopped... how does that fit? You said ALL
Everyone knew it was going to be terrible.
It’s a shame because with better writing it could have been a really good movie. There was a lot of heart and good humour in The Marvels
I love how Kelsey Grammer was definitely like, “Okay, I’ll take the check, but I’m not getting in that damn make-up chair again.”
I highly doubt it they even wanted him to. Being full CGI makes him much more close to the comics than just make-up.
Dan during the first five is minutes of the video- describes the internet at large.
I’m admitting to the ultimate sin and commenting before I even finish the video: thank you Dan. I have no doubt the in depth breakdown will be insightful and interesting and is the reason I continue to watch your content regardless of whether I agree or disagree with your take.
this. ditto.
Everyone is overwhelmed. It's easier to project a motivation onto Dan that allows dismissal than to incorporate criticism and re-evaluate your opinion.
I am so very grateful for you’re great content! We’ve got a lot of similar tastes in movies and I always checkout your recommendations as I highly respect your professional view points on the art of cinema. I really enjoyed the Marvels. It made me laugh and nearly made my cry in joy at the end. I know you would be the first to say that’s individual preferences when it comes down to it, yet I am surprised on how different we feel about the film.
I think I got more out of it because I had low expectations going in to the movie. I have you to thank for that, so we all win because of your great work 🙂
Thank you 🙏 you’re the best!
And congratulations on the wedding too 🎉
My God Dan...most of the people who leave negative comments, leave negative comments on a hundred other reviews. That's how they function. And honestly, as a viewer, I wouldn't have known...or cared. I subscribe to YOUR channel because I like what YOU say. Period. Point. Blank.
Here! Here!
Hate gets a lot more of traction than praise.
@@nathansossai So you think Dan actually likes the movie, but is pretending not to? Or that the people who went to see it and then gave it the lowest Cinemascore in the MCU (tied with Quantumania and Eternals) are pretending?
@@nathansossaibut it doesn't get you interviews, invited to red carpets, early review copies, and no there's a lot of positive criticism just as popular as the negative
Yeah, but that literally is the climate people have created.
Same thing happened to James Gun, and Jimmy Fallon
You're being fair, it was the culmination of every mistake they've made so far, rolled into one sloppy bore. One of the many problems they need to fix is the silly comics accurate costumes. They never made Hawkeye look like he does in the comics for a good reason. Binary looks absurd.
Thanks for saying that. Binary's costume made me long for the days of black leather in the X-Men films. It might've worked with better lighting but as is it was a train wreck.
Very well put! This is why you’re the GOAT Dan
It feels like the movie is at least not as annoying and obnoxious as Love and Thunder - that movie was/is insufferable :/
Totally respect your reviews, criticism & explanations Dan! I know the movie isn’t a masterpiece but I really liked it waaay more than expected! Saw it in IMAX last night and I wouldn’t mind rewatching it whereas I can’t imagine rewatching Quantumania 😂
The movie was bleh, but my daughter loved it and I had a good time taking her to the movies.
Based on his video's comments, Dan has become the Schrödinger's cat of movie reviewers. In reality, Dan is just Dan.
Yea, I liked the chemistry & interaction between the three leads 😊
@@Erasureeraser was it just the right amount of fun or sacrificed something import trying too hard to be fun is always going to be subjective related to why the average ticket buyer went to see the movie.
Anger seems to come from how dare you not validate my enjoyment or how dare you enjoy the movie if I had a bone to pick with it. Pop culture is a weird place of we all have to love it or we all have to hate it.
@@channelsofash You aren't entitled to an echo chamber. Don't watch reviews if doing so would be distressing to you.
@@channelsofash No, it's sacrificing something important trying to hard to be fun. They want the audience to care about the characters when really Captain Marvel is divisive one and hasn't been well recieved yet 🤷
@@arpitakodagu9854 where was I saying I wanted an echo chamber? I think it's weird to be all or nothing on an art form.
Completely disagree with his assement. I went in with no political or brand agenda and loved the film for what it was obviously intended to be: a fun, light-hearted, thrill ride.
Just watched it 2 days ago and posted this in my discord
Like the movie isn't great.
It blows my mind that there was ZERO discussion about the Skrulls they left behind. I am 100% certain they filmed something and cut it out.
Dan, Jeremy Jahns, and Chris Stuckmamn are my Mt. Rushmore of yt movie critics.
Geekin with James Hancock is also a good channel.
Just finish the film, The first 30 min I was like this is not that bad… after that I was laughing for how cringe it was 😂
I love Iman Vellani's energy. She absolutely rules
even though I fully disagree with the review never have I thought Dan's integrity as a critic should be questioned. I know this was just his opinion of the movie not some type of bandwagon on the Disney and Brie Larson hate train
