      You must not be from America, I take it. His "American accent" is just as bad as most American's attempts at an "English accent". First, there are as many regional accents in the US as there are in the UK...maybe not quite as pronounced, but there are there. Second, none of them sound like what Clarkson came up with. It's sort of a hybrid of midwestern American and maybe Northwestern? I've never heard anyone who actually talks like that, even on TV.

    • @anzaca1
      @anzaca1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Actually, hydrogen would give more power, because it burns more aggressively, and it's lighter, so you can carry more of it. Aston Martin recently ran a V8 Vantage on hydrogen, with just a few basic modifications to the engine. They say this could easily be done to any existing car.

      The problem with hydrogen as a fuel is that it has to be created. Albeit it being the most common element, it is very rare on the Earth as free gas. It is not like petrol, which was made by Mother Earth, but it has to be extracted in a "factory" (usually from fossil fuels). So it is like electricity: just a way to transport energy, and as that it is inefficient.
      I doubt hydrogen will ever be efficient enough to be the main power source in most cars. Electric cars are so much more efficient and their major problems of range and charging times are rapidly diminishing. If hydrogen generation can be made efficient enough, it might be used for energy storage with solar and wind power. Also there might be a market for portable hydrogen fuel cell range extenders.

  • @xavierh.5102
    @xavierh.5102 5 ปีที่แล้ว +30

    I REALLY hope hydrogen gets worked out eventually, it's the future IMO, electric cars are just too much of a compromise. they've seemed to have proven themselves to be fairly fragile, and if (or rather when) they do break they're damn near impossible to work on without just bringing it to a professional. plus charging your car is really annoying, even if charge times are reduced they're never gonna be as quick as just pumping gas.
    and finally they pollute more than gas just because of battery production, and even if you ignore batteries they're still effectively running on fossil fuel since 75% of electricity is produced through those means...

    • @deixyis3806
      @deixyis3806 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The problem with hydrogen powered car is that it's hard to actually get usable hydrogen for the car, it costs more and use energy more to get or create that rather than using electric or gasoline, so until we can efficiently produce hydrogen we probably won't get any car that uses hydrogen. Probably the best bet is nuclear powered car like in fallout but maybe that's just what I want

    Just worked out that to buy a £15,000 car, with the cash back ratio of £100 spent : £4 back to spend, only by buying pies, it would take him 3005 years.
    (£100 : £4) (Ratio of 25:1)
    Therefore, 375,000:15,000
    £15000 x 25 = £375000 spent to get £15000 credit, £375000/£2.4 (the amount he said he spent on pies, 2 at £1.20) = 156250 weeks, divided by 52 = 3004.8 years.....I’m bored

    The problem with hydrogen cars isn't making an engine that works on hydrogen, it's making the hydrogen in an environmentally and financially viable manner and storing it. And today the technologies don't exist yet.

      tavi921 hydrolysis is fairly effective and can be carried out with little equipment, theoretically in the filling station. I'd say safety is the biggest problem

    • @Psiberzerker
      @Psiberzerker 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's also energy density. You have to fit an extremely rarified gas that likes to wiggle it's way out of everything, into your car. With plumbing, fill up taps, a tank at the gas station, the entire fuel system all the way to the refinery where you get it has to keep hydrogen gas from escaping. Hydrocarbons, aliphatic chains like, IDK Octane are essentually carriers for hydrogen fuel, but they're Dense, liquids at room temperature. The problem is, they're chained together with Carbons. I'm looking into an Ammonia 2 stage fuel cell. (2 fuel cells, in series) which produces nothing but Nitrogen, Water Vapor, and electric power. Because an Ammonia tank is much easier to fit onboard.

    • @Psiberzerker
      @Psiberzerker 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not "The" problem with HFCCs (Hydrogen Fuel Cell Cars.) It's the technological hurdles, plural, of replacing the entire Energy industry, with anything. Buying A, single HFCC is not going to change the planet, either. It's an atmosphere, not a light switch. (Also, you don't "Make" the hydrogen. Everything else, in the universe, is fused out of Hydrogens. It's the atomic building block of all chemical matter, that we know of. Making hydrogen was never a problem.)

    • @Psiberzerker
      @Psiberzerker 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem with Hydrolysis is where do you get the energy to electrify the water from? If it's a power plant, then the net effect is 0, you have the same amount of carbondioxides going into the atmopshere at the plant, instead of on the road, only you have to build a shitton more Hydrolysis plants, with Disel powered trucks to ship everything there, and run the equipment like buldozers. It's a SYSTEM. Changing the cars aren't going to fix the entire system, in fact cars are a less significant factor than the diesel powered tanker trucks they drive around the oil fields, to fill up the tanks on the pumps, that pull the crude oil out of the ground. We need greener Tractor Trailers. If you want to fix it at the highways, look at them, and everything around you that was shipped to your city, on the back of a Diesel powered lorry.

    I really think they were right about hydrogen fuel cells. For people who drive longer distances, BEVs are a problem because batteries are heavy, take a while to charge, and don’t hold all that much energy. 3 kg of hydrogen can store 100 kWh. To get the same energy from a battery, it’d weigh 625 kg (Tesla Model S P100D). Another issue with batteries is that it’s just not sustainable to produce them. They require a lot lithium and several rare metals. Making a lot of big battery packs is not sustainable. A better option is to have HFCs paired to a small battery (no more than a couple kWh for regenerative braking). One Tesla model S battery could be turned into 50 batteries for an HFC or even 5 PHEV batteries. BEVs have a lot of obstacles to overcome if they want to be viable which is why I’m not betting on them
